All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
At the beginning of the twentieth century, the feminist movement in England was making significant progress, effectively influencing the leading artists and scholars of the time to consider the nature of female oppression and to do their part to invoke change. Among these figures, D.H. Lawrence emerged as a provocative voice on gender and sexuality. To this day, his work remains a source of significant contention, often due to the controversial representation of gender and sexuality in his novels. For decades, feminist critics have debated Lawrence’s characterization of women, some accusing his work of misogyny, with others praising his careful …

The Relationship Between Salvinia Molesta Infestation And The Microbial Ecology Of Wetlands At Caddo Lake, Tx, Usa, Martin Hadsell
The Relationship Between Salvinia Molesta Infestation And The Microbial Ecology Of Wetlands At Caddo Lake, Tx, Usa, Martin Hadsell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Wetlands are known to host many beneficial geochemical processes such as nutrient cycling and carbon sequestration. These processes are primarily driven by the microbial communities within a wetland. The establishment of non-native invasive species within wetlands has the potential to alter the once beneficial functionality of wetland microbial communities due to the sensitivity microbes have towards environmental changes. Because of this, several metagenomic studies have been conducted to assess microbial community response to aquatic plant invasion; however, there haven’t been any studies researching the influence of Salvinia molesta (D.S. Mitch.), commonly known as Giant Salvinia, on microbial communities. The goal …

Comparative Analysis Of Inference Performance Of Pretrained Deep Learning Models In Analog Accelerators, Mafizur Rahman
All Theses
Resistive crossbars using non-volatile memory devices have become promising components for implementing Deep Neural Network (DNN) in hardware. However, crossbar-based computations encounter a notable challenge due to device and circuit-level non-idealities. In this study, we explored three recent crossbar simulation tools, namely, AIHWKIT, CrossSim, and MemTorch, and evaluated four pre-trained DNNs for image classification on CIFAR-100 dataset using these tools. All three tools had strong analog simulation functionalities that effectively mimicked the actual hardware environment. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study using all three simulation tools of analog accelerators, representing three distinctive hardware settings, to …

The Indonesian Journal of Socio-Legal Studies
Slum areas in Indonesia present a significant challenge, with government programs such as the National Slum Upgrading Program (NSUP) aiming to address urban poverty and improve living conditions. Despite the implementation of formal policies, the interplay between legal frameworks and local practices often determines the success of such initiatives. Drawing on Keebet von Benda-Beckmann’s theory of legal pluralism, this research examines the transformation of slums into productive and sustainable zones, focusing on Kampung Jodipan, Kampung Heritage Kajoetangan, and Kampung Kreatif Dago Pojok. These case studies reveal how formal legal systems interact with informal norms and community-driven practices in achieving urban …
How International Students Affect Domestic Students' Achievement: Evidence From The Opt Stem-Extension, Town Oh
School of Business and Leadership Working Papers
In this paper, I investigate the effects of international student enrollment on the academic performances of domestic students in U.S. higher education. I leverage the large and rapid increase in international student enrollment after 2008, driven by an extension of the OPT duration that incentivized more international students to pursue U.S. college degrees. Using administrative data linked to first-year salaries, I find that a 10-percentage-point increase in the share of international students in STEM courses reduces domestic students' grades by 0.06 points on a 4-point scale.
Kinship Verification Based On Intelligent Techniques: Survey, Muna Ghazi Abdulsahib
Kinship Verification Based On Intelligent Techniques: Survey, Muna Ghazi Abdulsahib
Iraqi Journal of Computers, Communications, Control and Systems Engineering
Kinship verification is the process of using observable characteristics, including facial features or other biometric data, to ascertain whether two people are familial related. Current approaches to kinship verification encounter multiple challenges, despite their significance in fields such as biometric security, family reunification, and forensic investigations. The most accurate way to confirm kinship is by DNA analysis, which is expensive, time-consuming, and invasive; in contrast, the traditional methods using manual comparison and facial recognition are more prone to human mistake. Visual verification of kinship among family members can be difficult to reliably rely on due to genetic variability, aging, and …

Abstract
MotivationThe scale and scope of comparative trait data are expanding at unprecedented rates, and recent advances in evolutionary modeling and simulation sometimes struggle to match this pace. Well-organized and flexible applications for conducting large-scale simulations of evolution hold promise in this context for understanding models and more so our ability to confidently estimate them with real trait data sampled from nature. Results
We introduce TraitTrainR, an R package designed to facilitate efficient, large-scale simulations under complex models of continuous trait evolution. TraitTrainR employs several output formats, supports popular trait data transformations, accommodates multi-trait evolution, and exhibits flexibility …
Linking Human Resource Management Strategy To Organizational Performance: A Better Understanding Of High-Performance Work Practices In Higher Education, Laure Pou
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
A model of Human Resource Management (HRM) was presented by Guest (1987) as a new approach to management of personnel matters in which HRM strategy informs HRM practices, and both result in beneficial Human Resources (HR) outcomes, such as employee engagement. The notion underlying this model is that strategic HRM and related practices influence behavioral outcomes that positively impact performance outcomes for an organization. However, research to date has been inconclusive regarding how HRM systems or specific HRM practices are contributing to organizational performance (Paauwe, 2009). The intent of this study was to further examine the relationship between HRM practices …

Lost At The South China Sea: A Legal Rationale For Joining Unclos, Dean Feinman
Fordham Law Review
Rising tensions in the South China Sea are a tired front of great power competition. Since President Barack Obama’s “pivot to Asia,” there has been renewed attention on growing Chinese naval power and influence, which stands to challenge the U.S. status as the world’s preeminent naval force. Despite a clear and obvious interest in maintaining a favorable global oceans regime, the United States has not ratified the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), the principal international instrument governing the use of the oceans. Instead, the United States argues that ratification is unnecessary because UNCLOS “embodies” customary …

Drivers Of Variability In Surf Zone Habitat Use By Sandy Beach Fish: Unwitting Citizen Scientists Reveal Detailed Spatiotemporal Patterns, Ryan Hepburn, Tim Scott, Sam Prodger, Benjamin J. Ciotti
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Surf zones of sandy beaches are among the most heavily impacted aquatic ecosystems, yet are of criticalecological importance for inshore fish and fisheries. Knowledge of the drivers of fish habitat use in surf zones isneeded across broad scales to advise conservation and fisheries management, but sampling capabilities can belimited in spatio-temporal extent and resolution. The lesser weever Echiichthys vipera is a small, benthic, venomous fish that dominates surf zone fish assemblages in Northwest Europe and inflicts painful stings onbeachgoers. This study capitalises on an extensive record of E. vipera sting incidents to characterise variations insurf zone habitat use in relation to …

Seagrasses are marine flowering plants that form extensive meadows from the inter-tidal zone up to ~50 m depth. As biological and ecological Essential Biodiversity Variables, seagrass cover and composition provide a wide range of ecosystem services. Inter-tidal seagrass meadows provide services to many ecosystems, so monitoring their occurrence, extent, condition and diversity can be used to indicate the biodiversity and health of local ecosystems. Current global estimates of seagrass extent and recent reviews either do not mention inter-tidal seagrasses and their seasonal variation, or combine them with sub-tidal seagrasses. Here, using high-spatial and high-temporal resolution satellite data (Sentinel-2), we demonstrate …

Automatic Speech Recognition Models For Pathological Speech: Challenges And Insights, Kesego Mokgosi, Cathy Ennis, Robert Ross
Conference papers
Conversational avatars provide innovative platforms for enhancing therapist-patient interactions in speech therapy by offering real-time feedback. However, the performance of Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) models on disordered speech, such as dysarthria and stuttering, remains underexplored. The effectiveness of these systems hinges on the accuracy and processing speed of ASR models when transcribing pathological speech, particularly in real-time scenarios. This study evaluates several pre-trained ASR models, including Whisper-large- v3-turbo, Canary, DistilWhisper, and NVIDIA’s stt-en-fastconformer-ctc-large across three datasets: Common Voice (standard speech), TORGO (dysarthric speech), and UCLASS (stuttered speech). We assess the models using Word Error Rate (WER), Real-Time Factor (RTF), and …

Dwindling Appeals And Nonexistent En Banc Review In The Tenth Circuit, Wiley Kersh, Michael A. Kilbourn, Justin Marceau
Denver Law Review
Recently, the Denver Law Review published an Article by two Tenth Circuit Judges and a former clerk. The Article offers lawyers advice for best practices when seeking en banc review in the Tenth Circuit. This Response to that Article is not a critique of the sensible suggestions the authors offer. We regard the suggestions as solid advice for litigants attempting to present the strongest petition possible to the court. And we certainly do not seek to diminish the expertise and good intentions of the authors. But we do question the practicality of giving guidance on seeking en banc review in …

Public Health Emergencies And The Second Amendment, Amy Swearer, Paul J. Larkin
Denver Law Review
For many decades, gun control advocates, hoping to shift the terms of the debate to more favorable terrain, have argued that gun violence should be viewed primarily through the lens of public health. In September 2023, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham and New Mexico Secretary of Health Patrick Allen pushed that rationale to its extreme and beyond. Under the auspices of the state’s public health emergency laws, they issued an executive order and agency directive that effectively eliminated the right of ordinary citizens to bear arms in public in the state’s most populous county. That attempt to circumvent the …
The Tenth Circuit's Nuanced Approach To Administrative Exhaustion Of Constitutional Claims, Yonatan Gelblum
The Tenth Circuit's Nuanced Approach To Administrative Exhaustion Of Constitutional Claims, Yonatan Gelblum
Denver Law Review
The Tenth Circuit is typically more reluctant than most other courts of appeals to treat constitutional claims differently from nonconstitutional claims for purposes of administrative exhaustion. Consequently, the Tenth Circuit is less likely to exempt constitutional claims from exhaustion mandates. The Tenth Circuit usually requires litigants to raise these claims before a responsible agency prior to seeking relief in court, absent a particularized showing of undue burden or futility. Notably, despite the Supreme Court’s recent disparagement of administrative exhaustion of constitutional challenges to agency structure in Axon v. FTC and Carr v. Saul, the Tenth Circuit recently reaffirmed the continuing …

Victim Impact Statements In Mass Tort Bankruptcy Cases: Balancing Chapter 11'S Proceduralism With Tort Law's Commitment To Nonmonetary Recovery, Julia Boccagno
Denver Law Review
Bankruptcy has evolved into tortfeasors’ choice of law for resolving mass tort litigation. The United States Bankruptcy Code is equipped with procedural devices designed to maximize litigants’ financial recovery and enhance judicial efficiency. Although bankruptcy procedures aim to resolve widespread liability and open the courthouse doors to litigants who may not otherwise recover, they simultaneously overlook the nonmonetary and dignitary objectives underlying tort law. This Note uses the Supreme Court’s recent decision in Harrington v. Purdue Pharma—a high-profile example of mass tort litigation resolved through bankruptcy—to examine the extent to which bankruptcy procedures are unable to fulfill the nonmonetary objectives …

Causality Analysis For Neural Network Security, Bing Sun
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
While neural networks are demonstrating excellent performance in a wide range of applications, there has been a growing concern on their reliability and dependability.Similar to traditional decision-making programs, neural networks inevitably have defects that need to be identified and mitigated at times. Neural networks are usually inherently black-boxes and do not provide explanations on how and why decisions are made. As a result, these defects are more ``hidden" and more challenging to eliminate. It is thus crucial to develop systematic approaches to identify and mitigate defects in a neural network in a rigorous way.
In this dissertation, we focus on …

Robust Learning With Probabilistic Relaxation Using Hypothesis-Test-Based Sampling, Zilin Wang
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
In recent years, deep learning has been a vital tool in various tasks. The performance of a neural network is usually evaluated by empirical risk minimization. However, robustness issues have gained great concern which can be fatal in safety-critical applications. Adversarial training can mitigate the issue by minimizing the loss of worst-case perturbations of data. It is effective in improving the robustness of the model, but it is too conservative, and the plain performance of the model can be unsatisfying. Probabilistic Robust Learning (PRL) empirically balances the average- and worst-case performance while the robustness of the model is not provable …
