Playing Proverbs With Madame De Genlis, Rebecca Cypess Dec 2024

Playing Proverbs With Madame De Genlis, Rebecca Cypess

ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830

The theatrical genre known as the proverbe dramatique, which flourished as a pastime of French high society during the late eighteenth century, has often been understood through the written exemplars left by the author and artist Louis Carrogis, known as Carmontelle. Yet Carmontelle’s literary contributions to the genre have obscured the vast range of activities known as jouer des proverbes (playing proverbs)—activities associated especially with women—which included conversational games, pantomime, poetry, dance, and music making. Attending to the many descriptions of jouer des proverbes left by Stéphanie Félicité Ducrest de Saint-Aubin, the Comtesse de Genlis, reveals that the literary …

Enfilade And Variations: Interpreting Salon Music Through Residential Architecture In Eighteenth-Century Paris, Nicole Vilkner Dec 2024

Enfilade And Variations: Interpreting Salon Music Through Residential Architecture In Eighteenth-Century Paris, Nicole Vilkner

ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830

In eighteenth-century Parisian salons, theme and variations on popular melodies proliferated. Elaine Sisman’s seminal study of variation form provides a foundational approach for understanding variations as rhetorical exercises that persuade through differences in syntax and expression. In this vein, scholars have comprehensively affirmed the ways that salon music reflects the dialogic and sociable practices of Enlightenment receptions (Hanning, Sutcliffe, and Zohn). I suggest that theme and variation form is not only connected to the rhetoric of the salon, but that the concept of sequential elaboration is a principle that was also prized in residential architecture.

Drawing from theoretical writings of …

Simulating An Eighteenth-Century Enlightenment Salon: Embodied Experience And Scholarly Investigation, Jennifer M. Jones Dec 2024

Simulating An Eighteenth-Century Enlightenment Salon: Embodied Experience And Scholarly Investigation, Jennifer M. Jones

ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830

This paper reflects on my experience simulating an 18th-century French salon for an academic conference and in an undergraduate classroom. I argue that simulating a salon is heuristically as well as pedagogically useful and allows historians to test hypotheses about the nature of the salon and the role of the salonnière proposed by scholars such as Dena Goodman and Antoine Lilti. The essay also engages with some of the important insights gained from feminist and performance theory regarding historical reenactment. Thus I caution against naive attempts to reenact the past and instead suggest practices that foster open-ended conversations about the …

Toxic Varnishes: Perfumes, Stench, And Glow In Eighteenth-Century French Salons, Érika Wicky Dec 2024

Toxic Varnishes: Perfumes, Stench, And Glow In Eighteenth-Century French Salons, Érika Wicky

ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830

As several historians, including Alain Corbin, have noted, a new sensitivity to odors emerged in the 18th century that increased people’s negative responses to strong smells and heightened the demand for fragrances that were not only pleasant but also light and subtle. Some scholars see this period as a true “olfactory revolution.” How was this expressed in the salon, perceived both as a luxurious space and a site of elite sociability? This focus on the smell of varnish aims to illustrate how the scent of materials intertwined with the pleasures of decorative arts, both in the entire space of …

Exploring Predictors Of Purchase Intention Toward Plant-Based Meat, Kristiana Ginelle D. Monares, Ken Sean D. Roque, Melissa A. Santos, Sofia Marianne S. So, Catherine A. Valentin, Alvin Patrick M. Valentin

Journal of Management for Global Sustainability

Plant-based meat (PBM) presents itself as a sustainable alternative to meat production systems that have adversely impacted consumers’ health and the environment at large. In the Philippine context, however, there are only a few PBM manufacturers to date even though production has been emerging with expanded options for consumers to consider. Moreover, while PBM’s potential allows it to be a prospective working food system in the country through the promotion of healthier food chains, the literature on PBM in the Philippines is scant. This study thus contributes to this literature by exploring predictors of purchase intention toward PBM. The researchers …

Spectral Differencing Of Glories Reflects Cloud Droplet Size Distribution, Ilan Koren, Alex Kostinski, Uri Wollner Dec 2024

Spectral Differencing Of Glories Reflects Cloud Droplet Size Distribution, Ilan Koren, Alex Kostinski, Uri Wollner

Michigan Tech Publications

The glory, a striking optical phenomenon seen from space in unpolarized satellite images can be mapped onto the cloud's droplet sizes with a characteristic scale of 10 (Formula presented.). Such a mapping allows us to infer the mean and variance of the cloud droplets' radius, an important property that has remained elusive and inaccessible to passive unpolarized satellite sensing. Here, we propose a simple and robust polarization-like differential approach to map the glory's spectral properties to the desired moments of the droplet size distribution. By taking the differences between two spectrally close channels, we reduce multiple scattering contributions and amplify …

Background/Objectives: The MTHFR677C>T gene variant results in a thermolabile MTHFR enzyme associated with elevated plasma homocysteine in TT individuals. Health risks associated with the TT genotype may be modified by dietary and supplemental folate intake. Supplementation with methyltetrahydrofolate (methylTHF) may be preferable to folic acid because it is the MTHFR product, and does not require reduction by DHFR to enter one-carbon folate metabolism. In the Mthfr677C>T mouse model for this variant, female 677TT (TT) mice have an increased incidence of hepatic steatosis. The objective of this study was to compare the effects of methylTHF and folic acid supplementation …

The Effect Of Temperature On Power Output From A Hydroelectric Penstock, Taylor Hartell, Carson Running

Mechanical Engineering Student Publications

Hydroelectric power is a form of renewable energy that uses the power from water to generate electricity. One of the ways this is done is by diverting water from a river with a penstock leading to a turbine. Hydroelectric systems rely on water as the source of power, and the viscosity of water varies with temperature. When temperatures are low, viscosity is high, and when temperatures are high, viscosity is low. Other works have studied the optimal dimensions of penstocks for power generation and the effect of hydroelectric power on river temperatures. In this research, the effect of temperature on …

This paper deals with the preferable order of adjectives as one of the open classes in English grammar where various adjectives describe a following noun or pronoun. It also tends to identify the students' perception of the placement of patterns of adjectives. The problem of this study lies precisely in the sense that this subject may cause difficulty for Iraqi students in ordering multiple successful adjectives in a spoken or written form of the language. For this reason, it accounts for the causes of the dominant errors made by the undergraduates and their sources. To evaluate the student's strengths and …

Federal Rule Of Evidence 702: A History And Guide To The 2023 Amendments Governing Expert Evidence, Mark A. Behrens, Andrew J. Trask

Texas A&M Law Review

Federal Rule of Evidence 702 was amended effective December 1, 2023. The Rule was amended to clarify and emphasize that expert testimony may not be admitted unless the proponent demonstrates to the court by a preponderance of the evidence that the proffered testimony meets all of the Rule’s admissibility requirements. The amendment was necessitated by decisions by many federal courts incorrectly applying the reliability requirements set forth in Rule 702(b) and (d) and declaring that expert testimony is presumed to be admissible. Rule 702 was also amended to prevent “overstatement” by experts. Rule 702(d) now emphasizes that an expert’s opinion …

Capital Trifurcation, William W. Berry Iii Dec 2024

Capital Trifurcation, William W. Berry Iii

Texas A&M Law Review

The death penalty is disappearing in the United States. Annual executions remain under 25 per year, and new capital sentences per year have not exceeded 75 in over a decade.

Over the past two decades, however, a new kind of death sentence has emerged—life without parole (“LWOP”). In practice, LWOP and death sentences are functionally equivalent, as most death row inmates die of natural causes in prison, not execution. For both economic and moral reasons, most states are not actively executing prisoners.

Therefore, capital sentencing proceedings that focus on life versus death neglect the more consequential question—life without parole versus …
