The Attachment Repair Hexagon: A Model For Recovery From Infidelity In Evangelical Marriages, Theresa C. Allen, John C. Thomas
The Attachment Repair Hexagon: A Model For Recovery From Infidelity In Evangelical Marriages, Theresa C. Allen, John C. Thomas
Journal of Faith Integration Counseling (JFIC)
Many studies have examined risk factors for infidelity; however, few have investigated how couples recovered from the attachment injury of infidelity. Thus, a grounded theory pilot study was conducted by the lead author to explore the question, “What helps evangelical marriages recover after sexual infidelity by the husband?” Three evangelical couples who were a minimum of two years post-disclosure of infidelity shared their personal accounts of marital recovery. Six major findings emerged from the analysis of the data collected from their semi-structured interviews: 1) developing healthy communication; 2) obtaining support and accountability; 3) maintaining physical separation from the other woman; …
A Disability-Inclusive Theory Of “Ordinary” Care: Redistributing Accommodative Labor In Torts, Rachel Caldwell
A Disability-Inclusive Theory Of “Ordinary” Care: Redistributing Accommodative Labor In Torts, Rachel Caldwell
University of Chicago Law Review
Everyone generally owes each other a duty of ordinary care—but what is “ordinary”? How does one act reasonably to meet this burden? The answer depends on a plaintiff’s disability status. This Comment analyzes the current reasonable per- son standard for disabled plaintiffs and the corresponding duty of “ordinary care” provided by defendants through a critical disability studies lens. The current system burdens disabled plaintiffs with accommodating themselves, rather than requiring defendants to include accessible care in meeting their general duty of ordinary care. To redistribute this inequitable distribution of accommodative labor, this Comment proposes three stackable policies: (1) courts should …
Weighing In: Why Obesity Should Be Considered A Qualifying Disability Under The Americans With Disabilities Act, Anne Marie Hawley
Weighing In: Why Obesity Should Be Considered A Qualifying Disability Under The Americans With Disabilities Act, Anne Marie Hawley
University of Chicago Law Review
Anti-fat bias has been described as the last socially acceptable form of prejudice. Weight discrimination persists even though obesity affects over 100 million adults in the United States and obesity rates have continued climbing over the past few decades. Despite the discrimination that fat people face, there is no federal protection against weight discrimination. One potential solution to the lack of existing legal protections is the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
Claimants challenging weight discrimination under the ADA argue that weight discrimination is a form of disability discrimination—namely, discrimination based on the medical condition of obesity. Although the medical community …

The Algorithm Of Fear: Unpacking Prejudice Against Ai And The Mistrust Of Technology, James Hutson, Daniel Plate
The Algorithm Of Fear: Unpacking Prejudice Against Ai And The Mistrust Of Technology, James Hutson, Daniel Plate
Faculty Scholarship
The mistrust of AI seen in the media, industry and education reflects deep-seated cultural anxieties, often comparable to societal prejudices like racism and sexism. Throughout history, literature and media have portrayed machines as antagonists, amplifying fears of technological obsolescence and identity loss. Despite the recent remarkable advancements in AI—particularly in creative and decision-making capacities—human resistance to its adoption persists, rooted in a combination of technophobia, algorithm aversion, and cultural narratives of dystopia. This review investigates the origins of this prejudice, focusing on the parallels between current attitudes toward AI and historical resistance to new technologies. Drawing on examples from popular …

Because large brains are energetically expensive, they are associated with metabolic traits that facilitate energy availability across vertebrates. However, the biological underpinnings driving these traits are not known. Given its role in regulating host metabolism in disease studies, we hypothesized that the gut microbiome contributes to variation in normal cross-vertebrate species differences in metabolism, including those associated with the brain's energetic requirements. By inoculating germ-free mice with the gut microbiota (GM) of three primate species - two with relatively larger brains and one with a smaller brain - we demonstrated that the GM of larger-brained primates shifts host metabolism towards …

To gain insight into how researchers of aging perceive the process they study, we conducted a survey among experts in the field. While highlighting some common features of aging, the survey exposed broad disagreement on the foundational issues. What is aging? What causes it? When does it begin? What constitutes rejuvenation? Not only was there no consensus on these and other core questions, but none of the questions received a majority opinion-even regarding the need for consensus itself. Despite many researchers believing they understand aging, their understanding diverges considerably. Importantly, as different processes are labeled as "aging" by researchers, different …

Modeling Pricing And Profit Testing Of Chronic Disease's Insurance Policies Using Prostate Cancer Data In Kenya, Cynthia Mwau, Howard Omukami
Institute for Educational Development, East Africa
Chronic diseases have been on the rise globally and more so in the African continent. Treatment of chronic diseases requires lots of finances hence posing a challenge even to those people who are considered financially stable. Chronic diseases are expected to rise even further due to the rapid lifestyle change. In an attempt to mitigate the challenge of accessing treatment for chronic diseases, we develop a model for pricing and profit testing chronic disease insurance policy using the modified equivalence principle. We use the Kenyan mortality tables for the computation as they reflect the true mortality rate of the population …
Breaking Barriers: Bridging The Gap In Financial Literacy And Representation, Triniti Boson
Breaking Barriers: Bridging The Gap In Financial Literacy And Representation, Triniti Boson
Honor’s College Freeman Research Journal
This thesis explores the connection between the lack of financial literacy in Black communities, the underrepresentation of women in financial leadership, and the significance of building generational wealth. Many Black families have historically avoided financial conversations, often overshadowed by pressing economic challenges and a legacy of systemic exclusion, from redlining to discriminatory banking practices. These barriers prevented access to essential financial tools and knowledge, creating distrust in institutions and limiting opportunities for wealth accumulation across generations. Addressing these issues is essential for community empowerment. Financial literacy provides the knowledge to manage resources, build savings, and plan for the future. Generational …

Dual-Channel Side Channel Attack: Improved Aes Key Decryption By Combining Power And Electromagnetic Side Channels With Convolutional Neural Networks, Sean P. O'Neill
Theses and Dissertations
This research introduces a novel DL approach for SCA that combines power consumption and EM signals to enhance encryption key deduction by leveraging a dual-channel CNN architecture. A new dataset, consisting of simultaneous power and EM signal collections during 128-bitAES encryption, was developed to train and evaluate the model’s effectiveness. The combined approach achieved an 88% reduction in traces needed, from 50 traces to 6, for encryption key classification, outperforming traditional methods such as random forest, DPA, DEMA,and individual side channel CNN models. These findings highlight the potential of integrating multiple side channels in SCA to improve performance without the …
Mitigating Code Reuse Attacks On Risc-V Binaries: Minimizing Gadget Availability Using The Compressed Extension, Heitor Vieira
Mitigating Code Reuse Attacks On Risc-V Binaries: Minimizing Gadget Availability Using The Compressed Extension, Heitor Vieira
Theses and Dissertations
Embedded systems are vital in civilian and military applications, requiring high performance and security. The open RISC-V Instruction Set Architecture (ISA) offers significant advantages, including security through community review and strategic independence in microchip supplies. Brazil’s recent partnership with RISC-V highlights its potential for national technological sovereignty. However, RISC-V is not inherently resistant to code reuse attacks (CRAs), highlighting the need to integrate security measures early in development. The RISC-V Compressed extension, while beneficial for optimizing performance and code flexibility, introduces security trade-offs. As RISC-V adoption grows, particularly in critical systems, addressing these security challenges from the start is crucial …
Reconceptualizing Property Law's Background Principles In Takings Law, Timothy M. Mulvaney
Reconceptualizing Property Law's Background Principles In Takings Law, Timothy M. Mulvaney

Both libertarians and progressives celebrated the result in Tyler v. Hennepin County. This Article asserts that this unified celebration has overshadowed the extent to which the Supreme Court’s reasoning calls into question even our most foundational assumptions about the meaning of property and the takings protections the constitution affords to it. Followed to its literal end, Tyler remarkably suggests that owners may well need to ground their expectations in the property laws endorsed by a majority of states rather than in the laws of their own state.
Suspicious that the Court intended such a revolutionary upheaval of the state variations …
Shaping Preferences With Pigouvian Taxes, Gary M. Lucas Jr.
Shaping Preferences With Pigouvian Taxes, Gary M. Lucas Jr.
Faculty Scholarship
A Pigouvian tax is a tax that is imposed to correct an externality, which arises when a person engages in behavior that harms others without their consent. Pigouvian taxes are popular among academics—with prominent economists and legal scholars arguing for their imposition on myriad goods and activities that harm third parties, like carbon emissions and alcohol. Policymakers have recently been receptive to at least some of these arguments as evidenced by taxes imposed on or proposed for a variety of externality-generating goods, including guns, plastic bags, and sugary drinks.
The conventional economic rationale for Pigouvian taxes assumes that they affect …
Intellectual Property, Global Inequality, And Subnational Policy Variations, Peter K. Yu
Intellectual Property, Global Inequality, And Subnational Policy Variations, Peter K. Yu
Faculty Scholarship
This chapter criticizes the oversimplification of the binary North–South debate on intellectual property, innovation, and global inequality and highlights the wide geographic, sectoral, and income inequalities within middle-income countries. It begins by explaining why the arrival of these countries has called into question the North–South debate. The chapter then moves from the widely studied subject of global inequality to the underexplored topic of national inequality. Focusing on the intellectual property context, the discussion highlights the considerable subnational variations in the economic and technological conditions of middle-income countries. To combat national inequality, this chapter concludes by recommending interventions in three areas: …

The Supreme Court’s jurisprudence pursuant to the Federal Arbitration Act (FAA) has successfully encouraged the use of arbitration to resolve disputes of all types, including those arising out of contracts of adhesion. Meanwhile, with one very limited exception, neither Congress nor the Supreme Court has done anything to assure those bound by adhesive contracts that the required arbitration process will be fair, impartial, and consistent with due process principles. The FAA does not even include a definition of arbitration to guide arbitration providers and individual arbitrators. This chapter proposes the addition of a definition of arbitration to the FAA to …
Characterization Of Sediment-Flow Interactions In Tidally Driven Salt Marsh Environments, Elijah Rousseau
Characterization Of Sediment-Flow Interactions In Tidally Driven Salt Marsh Environments, Elijah Rousseau
Master's Theses and Capstones
Salt marshes are effective sediment traps and under static sea levels are known to increase in elevation over time. However, current sedimentation rates are insufficiently high to keep up with the estimated sea level rise. Strategies such as the mud motor, which proposes the injection of dredged sediment into incoming flood tides, require a deeper understanding of how tidal flows evolve in complex estuarine systems and how suspended sediment is dispersed and deposited in vegetated environments. Two field deployments occurred in the summer of 2023 to study the mechanisms of sediment transport and accretion along a horizontal marsh transect in …
Extracting Permittivity And Permeability Using The Position-Insensitive And Calibration-Independent Method On A Rectangular Waveguide, James Conrad Denemark
Extracting Permittivity And Permeability Using The Position-Insensitive And Calibration-Independent Method On A Rectangular Waveguide, James Conrad Denemark
Theses and Dissertations
Classic methods for extracting material characteristics require known measurements to accurately calibrate the network analyzer. Previous work demonstrated a position-insensitive and calibration-independent (PiCi) transmission/reflection method to extract a material’s permittivity. This thesis proposes a method with the same function, manipulated to use one empty measurement and then two samples of different thicknesses. The PiCi method is first adopted for rectangular waveguide which resulted in inaccurate permittivity data when compared to the calibrated solution. Once detector mismatch corrections were applied, the PiCi method produced accurate results. Using a 2-D numerical root search, permittivity and permeability material characteristics are now successfully extracted …

My objective with my thesis is to argue for and reinforce a type of anthropocentrism that is both environmentally conscious and consumable for an audience that is not necessarily well versed in philosophical literature. In the first chapter I go over philosophical frameworks, such as Anthropocentrism and Biocentrism, and why I believe they do not meet both of those criteria listed. After that I discuss New Anthropocentrism, coined by Clive Hamilton, and why I believe that a slightly modified version possesses qualities that I believe are needed for the crisis at hand. In chapter 2 I use that framework and …
