Functionality Of Takeover Regimes In Asia, Abhishek Dadoo Mr., Shruti Kunisetty Ms.
National Law School Business Law Review
Takeover laws play a critical role in regulating the market for corporate control and therefore directly impact public M&A in a country. While the last few decades have seen a rapid evolution in the takeover deal space, the takeover regimes in certain developing countries, like India, are at a nascent stage. There is abundant scholarship surrounding the developed takeover regimes, like that of the United Kingdom and the United States. In this article, the authors seek to investigate the local peculiarities of the developing countries to which the Anglo-American takeovers regimes have been imported and the ways in which they …

Bounded By Place: Rural Students, College Knowledge, Educational Motivation, And College Going, Sarah Rutt Williams, Frimpomaa Ampaw, Skylar R. Duke, Anne M. Hornak
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
Rural students face inequitable access to educational opportunities when compared to their suburban and urban counterparts (Koricich et al., 2018; Ovink et al., 2018), and their postsecondary experiences and outcomes remain understudied. Research on the role of college knowledge in the persistence of this educational inequity is particularly scarce. Using a non-experimental survey design, the present study seeks to understand the effect of rural students’ college knowledge on their postsecondary intentions. We use surveys completed by rural high school seniors and logistic regression to analyze the relationship between students’ college knowledge, their motivation, and their postsecondary plans. Our findings show …

Contextual Conversational Advertisements In Agents, Oded Elyada, Ilia Labzovsky, Danny Karmon
Defensive Publications Series
The technology described in this paper relates to identifying relevant advertisements (“ads”) based on a textual conversation, e.g., chat, between a user and an agent and generating a text-based natural language advertisement that fits the context of the conversation. A natural language query is generated based on the conversation between the user and the agent to identify relevant ads. The query is transmitted to an advertising system that can identify the relevant ads based on the context of the conversation and/or additional signals. An artificial intelligence (“AI”) model, such as a large language model (“LLM”), converts the relevant ad into …

The Context Of Mahan's 'Debatable Zone', William D. Walters, Jr.
The Geographical Bulletin
At the turn of the 19th century American naval historian Alfred Thayer Mahan (1840- 1914) developed a concept which he called the "Debatable Zone". This was a wide arc stretching from Turkey to China which Mahan argued was the key to future world development. Mahan's Debatable Zone has become the best known American contribution to early geopolitical thinking, and is often seen as one of the roots of Mackinder's heartland theory. However, Mahan's ideas can be better understood in the context of popular writing on Asia at the time. Although he had the ear of key American political figures, they …
The Relationship Between Politics And Public Drinking Water In The District Of Columbia, William James Smith, Jr.
The Relationship Between Politics And Public Drinking Water In The District Of Columbia, William James Smith, Jr.
The Geographical Bulletin
The nature ofthe relationship between politics and public drinking water in the District of Columbia is examined. Thecase study of the nexus between water resource management, public health, public relations, and politics sheds light on issues that may affect quality and quantity of drinking water in the United States. The country has a complex set of laws and policies that effectively split responsibility for individual aspects of drinking water management among a variety of governmental and non-governmental agencies. Attimes, this shared responsibility breeds conflict that occurs at the expense of the general public. By examining the root cause of political …

“What The Heck Am I Looking At?”: A User-Based Examination Of The Metadata Associated With Digital Archival Objects, Donald Force
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
Digital archival collections are invaluable resources for many different types of users. These collections, and the digital objects within them, allow users to remotely access primary and secondary sources that are often too difficult to view in person due to time and cost. These resources, however, are not without their limitations. One of the most significant challenges that users face in using these collections is understanding the original context of the object. Ideally, the metadata that accompanies most digital surrogates should serve as a bridge between the digital object and its physical counterpart. The project discussed in this paper examines …

Flowchart Orchestration For Complex Task Performance Using A Large Language Model, Na
Defensive Publications Series
While large language models (LLMs) can be used to perform complex tasks, e.g., rating search results, training and maintaining LLMs runs into several challenges. These include the significant expense to obtain training data, difficulty in identifying weaknesses, lack of explainability, and the lack of transferability to new foundation models or versions. This disclosure describes the use of flowcharts for orchestration of large language models (LLMs) to perform complex tasks. A complex task is broken down into a predefined set of simpler tasks. These simpler tasks are represented in a traditional flowchart format. The LLM is prompted to make the individual …

Shame, Loneliness, Regret: Analyzing Theeffectiveness Of Anti-Alcohol Marketing Campaigns On Consumers, Zakary Bradbury
Honors Projects in Marketing
The alcohol market has been growing exponentially worldwide over the past decade with no trends of stopping in the near future. With this growth comes an increase in marketing efforts from both pro-alcohol companies and anti-alcohol agencies. While pro-alcohol companies have not had any trouble regarding marketing, anti-alcohol agencies have lagged behind in terms of social and digital marketing efforts. The goal of this research was to uncover how various anti-alcohol stimuli affect consumer attitudes and beliefs. To conduct research, we ran a Qualtrics survey consisting of 279 college students. The results showed that 1) when participants viewed an anti-alcohol …

Police Officer Perceptions Of Mental Wellbeing Needs: A Multi-Methods Study, Suzanne Hakeos
Police Officer Perceptions Of Mental Wellbeing Needs: A Multi-Methods Study, Suzanne Hakeos
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Police officers are exposed to repeated traumatic exposures (e.g., deaths, abuse, threats to personal and community member safety) and organizational stressors (e.g., poor leadership and support, low job control) throughout their careers. These job-related exposures and stressors have been shown to increase the officers’ risk for developing physical (e.g., cardiovascular disease, sleep deprivation) and mental health issues (e.g., depression, anxiety, hypervigilance, post-traumatic stress disorder, hopelessness, substance abuse, self-isolation, suicidal ideations). Outside of their work environment and duties, factors and stressors related to the officer (e.g., beliefs, values, coping strategies, personality, life experiences), interpersonal relationship dynamics (e.g., work-family demands, conflict, support), …

Perceptions And Attitudes Of Western Michigan University Students On Antibiotic Medications, Emily Boask
Perceptions And Attitudes Of Western Michigan University Students On Antibiotic Medications, Emily Boask
Honors Theses
On a global scale, antibiotic resistance is a threat to public health. The causes of antibiotic resistance are multifaceted, including healthcare providers overprescribing antibiotics, antibiotic overuse in farming and food production, and antibiotic misuse or malpractices. The public recognizes antibiotic resistance as a significant problem but there are serious knowledge gaps regarding antibiotic resistance and antibiotic stewardship.
University students are a particularly important subpopulation of the public to understand appropriate antibiotic use because many of these individuals are navigating their health concerns on their own for the first time. Many individuals believe that antibiotics can improve cold symptoms, upper respiratory …

The Vision Of The Inklings: Mythopoeia And Modern Christian Literature, Emmalene Sotomayor
Senior Honors Theses
The Inklings wrote with the intention to convey truth through myth. C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien and their friends developed stories to point readers to something greater—very often God. Christian creators now can look to their example while writing their own works of art. Currently, Christian fiction is in a sad state, known for mediocre romance novels that hardly portray faith in a moving or truthful manner. Believers can use the wisdom of Tolkien and Lewis to develop their own excellent works. Lewis and Tolkien’s beliefs in myth pointing to God, hope against adversity, and good resisting …

Parenting Practices And Attachment Levels In Relation To Externalizing Behaviors In Children Raised By Nonparental Caregivers, Kourtney Mia Barfield
Parenting Practices And Attachment Levels In Relation To Externalizing Behaviors In Children Raised By Nonparental Caregivers, Kourtney Mia Barfield
Honors Theses
Current literature supports parenting practices and the quality of child-caregiver attachments are correlated with child externalizing behavior. However, these results typically come from samples of biological parents and their children. It is unknown if parenting practices (i.e. poor supervision, inconsistent discipline, and positive parenting) predict attachment and externalizing behavior among children of grandparents and foster parents. Previous studies have also found
that attachment mediates the relation between parenting practices and externalizing behavior among children raised by biological parents. This study aims to determine if similar relations will be found among grandchildren and foster children and if the level of attachment …

Comparative Analysis Of Artificial Intelligence And Statistical Models For Li-Ion Battery Cells State Estimation In Electric Vehicles, Rasha H.A. Tabasha
Theses
This graduate paper presents a comparative study of statistical modeling and Artificial Intelligence (AI) approaches for estimating essential parameters of lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries in electric vehicles (EVs). The key parameters estimated in this study are voltage, current, and temperature of Li-ion battery cells in EVs. A precise state estimation is required to ensure safety operation, to optimize the Battery Management System (BMS), and to enhance the battery life. Variations in EVs batteries parameters may occur due to different reasons such as sensor faults or attacks. As a result, obtaining an accurate estimation is essential to maintain EV battery efficiency. Using …
