Enhancing Cultural Competence In Counselor Education Through Sociolinguistic Awareness, Jessica Haas, Diane D. Walsh, Marisa Marroquin

Teaching and Supervision in Counseling

Language plays a central role in building a therapeutic working alliance. Language is essential in building trust, conveying empathy, and creating shared meaning between counselors and clients. Nevertheless, language can equally harm the working alliance if used insensitively or without awareness of cultural and social differences. Sociolinguistic awareness emphasizes the interpretational nature of language and how it can unintentionally perpetuate discrimination against marginalized identities. Counselor educators can utilize sociolinguistic principles to model and teach the significance of language in counseling and its relationship to multicultural competency and cultural humility. The article highlights how clients' language may connect to their social …

The Spatial Dynamics Of The Securities And Commodities Industry: An Analysis Of Growth Share For States And Msa Counties, 1977-1997, Darren Maher, Jay D. Gatrell

The Geographical Bulletin

This paper investigates the spatial dynamics and characteristics of the securities and commodities industry. The study investigates the observed geography of the securities and commodities industry sector at the metropolitan statistical area (MSA) county scale. The research provides a descriptive analysis of observed growth and identifies high-performing states and MSA counties. Additionally, we examine if the diffusion pattern of securities and commodities activities has followed the general spatial dynamics of the product cycle model at the state scale. At the MSA county scale, the paper considers whether the diffusion pattern of the industry is consistent with Scott’s (1988) OutwardDownward-Across model …

Martial Spirits And Marital Rites: Assessing Rousseau's Critique Of Commerce's Devaluation Of The Military And The Family, Jacob A. Harvey Oct 2024

Martial Spirits And Marital Rites: Assessing Rousseau's Critique Of Commerce's Devaluation Of The Military And The Family, Jacob A. Harvey

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation will investigate Rousseau’s critique of how commercial society devalues soldiers and families and the responses provided by defenders of commerce. I will examine Rousseau’s corpus to demonstrate how Rousseau viewed commerce as a threat to both the responsibilities that men in a political community must be willing to fight and die for their country, as commercial societies intensify the hedonistic risk-averse calculations within members of the community. I will also show how Rousseau’s concerns towards commerce extended to the family, inhibiting the joys that can come with being part of a family and inhibiting citizens' willingness to have …

Factors Associated With The Implementation Of The Protocols For Native American Archival Materials: An Exploratory Study, Kimberly D. Anderson (Kliewer)

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

This study examines motivations for adopting the Protocols for Native American Archival Materials (PNAAM), the factors that might impact implementation of PNAAM in practice, and an exploration of how and why new ethical standards are accepted or rejected. The researcher conducted a survey in 2023 of archivists and/or memory workers working at non-Tribal institutions that have some materials about Indigenous people. The study was designed around the respondent’s perceptions of authority, skills, knowledge, relationships, and resources both as individuals and within their repositories. The study also incorporated Albert Bandura’s framework for moral disengagement hypothetically as a mechanism for assessing ethical …

Case Study: Creativity And Innovation In Graphic Design, Arberesha Hoxha

UBT International Conference

Design communicates thoughts, ideas, emotions, and narratives in a universal language. Cultural differences, however, have a big impact on how people view and understand design. Storytelling, usability, aesthetics, and symbolism are all impacted by the intricate relationships between culture and design. In a world growing more interconnected by the day, it is critical to recognize and comprehend the impact of cultural subtleties on design. Through the lens of cultural aesthetics, design is assessed. These aesthetics consist of fashion trends, color palettes, and design elements that are representative of specific civilizations. Aspects of design frequently have rich cultural meaning and symbolism. …

Radio At The Crossroads Of A Networked Society: What Is Going Wrong With The Radio In Kosovo?, Gjylije Rexha Oct 2024

Radio At The Crossroads Of A Networked Society: What Is Going Wrong With The Radio In Kosovo?, Gjylije Rexha

UBT International Conference

With a young population and widespread internet access, Kosovo presents a favorable media landscape for the development of 21st-century radio. However, most radio stations have not aligned their development with the concept that the future of radio is the internet, not on the internet. Through personal observation and in depth semi structured interviews, this paper analyzes the period when radio in Kosovo is searching for its new identity, transitioning from a major media platform for large audiences to a communicative medium in a networked society. The paper argues that the main issue for radio stations in Kosovo is the failure …

How A.I. Will Change The Entire Structure Of Civilisation: The Need For A New Design Of Education, Roy J. Andersen Oct 2024

How A.I. Will Change The Entire Structure Of Civilisation: The Need For A New Design Of Education, Roy J. Andersen

UBT International Conference

The rapid rise of A.I. is expected to replace up to 90% of jobs by the end of the century, leading to widespread unemployment and profound social challenges. This paper explores the societal impacts of A.I.-driven unemployment, including increased crime, depression, and diminished personal freedoms due to heightened surveillance. It argues for a shift in education, moving away from job-oriented curricula toward a focus on behavioral development, ethics, and social responsibility, to prepare future generations for life in an A.I.-dominated world.

The Role Of Entrepreneurial Marketing In Driving Startup Success: A Case Study Of Kosovo, Tringa Dança Hoti, Yllka Poteri

UBT International Conference

Start-ups are essential to a thriving economy, significantly contributing to economic growth and job creation. As a result, laws that encourage entrepreneurship and the founding of new companies are essential to the economic growth of a nation. However, for there to be more economic opportunities in the end, a significant number of start-ups must survive and thrive in the market (Claes M. Hultman, 2010). Entrepreneurial marketing in start-ups acknowledges the unique business environments these firms operate in, along with the innovative, proactive, and opportunistic mindset of entrepreneurs. Marketing practices in start-ups tend to be more creative, instinctive, informal, and unstructured, …

The Role Of Digital Media In The Promotion Of Cultural Heritage And Art, Arben Arifi Oct 2024

The Role Of Digital Media In The Promotion Of Cultural Heritage And Art, Arben Arifi

UBT International Conference

The goal of this paper is to provide an overview of how digital media are creating new conceptual and operational landscapes. On one hand, digital media are altering expectations regarding digital tools for both individuals and institutions. On the other hand, they are giving artists new opportunities to explore and innovate in their creative expressions. The question arises: Is culture merely our past, our roots, ancient artifacts, or historical art? Culture encompasses all the elements that shape our identity and influence how we behave and interact in various aspects of our lives—both personal and public. It includes practices we choose …

Children's Theater, Fatlume Bunjaku

UBT International Conference

When we imagine an evening at the theater, you probably see a fun night spent relaxing and watching a story unfold, taking you away from reality for a few hours. What you can often forget is that theater is more than entertainment. Theater is a very unique and permanent experience that directly affects the education of each individual. In this case, the early exposure of children to the theater and their direct engagement in theatrical activities greatly affects their development and helps to discover their talents. On the other hand, a growing number of communities are realizing how important theater …

The Potential Impact Of Charter Section 28 On Quebec's Controversial Secularism Law And The Pursuit Of Gender-Equality In Canadian Courts, Nywani Albert Oct 2024

The Potential Impact Of Charter Section 28 On Quebec's Controversial Secularism Law And The Pursuit Of Gender-Equality In Canadian Courts, Nywani Albert

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

The Western liberal democratic order, anchored in respect for individual rights and constitutional norms, faces a critical challenge as Quebec follows the pattern of several European nations in enacting laws restricting religious attire. While the Quebec Law 21, “An Act Respecting the Laicity of the State,” is ostensibly neutral, it particularly restricts Muslim women's rights. This paper explores an ongoing, novel legal strategy challenging Quebec's secularism law, focusing on Section 28 of Canada's Charter of Rights and Freedoms. While Section 28 mandates gender equality in Charter implementation, its potential remains largely unexplored in the decades since Charter enactment. Drawing …

Prescription Practices, Anti-Psychotics, And Covid-19: An Intersectional Examination Of The Long-Term Care Home Setting In Canada, Olivia Ramos Oct 2024

Prescription Practices, Anti-Psychotics, And Covid-19: An Intersectional Examination Of The Long-Term Care Home Setting In Canada, Olivia Ramos

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

Public discourse and concern over the state of long-term care homes in Canada has been ongoing over the last two decades. One of the main sources of these concerns is the off-label prescription of anti-psychotic medications to long-term care home residents. Off-label use of pharmaceuticals is common and can be beneficial in certain contexts, however, there is a risk of anti-psychotics being used as an inappropriate means of managing patients chemically in the long-term care home setting. This paper engages in three lines of inquiry: first, the regulatory landscape of on and off-label prescription in Canada; second, the off-label use …

Embodiment And Ritual Clothing: Dressing The Israelite High Priest, Ally Huffmire Oct 2024

Embodiment And Ritual Clothing: Dressing The Israelite High Priest, Ally Huffmire

Studia Antiqua

Exodus 28 and 39 contain a detailed description of the clothing God instructed to be made and worn by Israelite priests. In this essay, sacred clothing will be understood through the lens of ritual studies, characterizing clothing with a sense of liminality that defines and endows the human wearer with identity and power. The social meanings and implications of the high priest’s dress will be reconstructed by engaging in sensory criticism, drawing upon insights from the greater eastern Mediterranean world. Given the ancient world’s unique conception of a permeable body, ritual clothing had the ability to imbue the wearer with …

Mitochondrial Memory: Transgenerational Trauma, Functional Medicine, And Quantum Physics, Rosalynn A. Vega

Anthropology Faculty Publications

Building from Karen Barad’s “diffractive methodological approach” (2007, 71), this article combines Mariella Pandolfi’s notion of the female body as a transgenerational “physiological memoir” (1990, 255) with functional medicine perspectives on mitochondria and advances in quantum physics around “entanglement” to explore a new concept—“mitochondrial memory.” Recent findings in biological research depict a communicating collective of mitochondria distributed across different “human” organs and describe how this collective controls many aspects of human health through epigenetic mechanisms. Since exact copies of mitochondria are inherited through the maternal line, I draw from anthropological theory, functional medicine research, and recent discoveries in physics to …

INTRODUCTION: We examined the perceptions of the Master of Public Health (MPH) degree graduates regarding their personal competencies, job performance and professional development using a mixed method, explanatory sequential design.

METHODS: A cross-sectional, self-administered questionnaire of the Haifa School of Public Health alumni who graduated between 2005 and 2022 was disseminated to 849 graduates between March and June 2022, from which 127 responded (response rate: 14.90%). This was followed by 24 in-depth interviews with alumni from the same sample (conducted between November 2022 and March 2023).

RESULTS: The sample included 74.8% of females with a mean age of 40.7 years, …

ESI Publications

Subjective well-being (SWB) is often described as being U-shaped over adulthood, declining to a midlife slump and then improving thereafter. Improved SWB in later adulthood has been considered a paradox given age-related declines in health and social losses. While SWB has mostly been studied in high-income countries, it remains largely unexplored in rural subsistence populations lacking formal institutions that reliably promote social welfare. Here, we evaluate the age profile of SWB among three small-scale subsistence societies (n = 468; study 1), forest users from 23 low-income countries (n = 6987; study 2), and Tsimane’ horticulturalists (n = …

Understanding The “L” In Cslp Within The Literacy Conundrum, Julia Lynch, Andrea Perrone Oct 2024

Understanding The “L” In Cslp Within The Literacy Conundrum, Julia Lynch, Andrea Perrone

Michigan Reading Journal

Rooted in culturally relevant pedagogy, culturally sustaining literacy practices (CSLP) focus on equity in education (Gay, 2000; Ladson-Billings, 1995; Paris, 2012). Our view of CSLP emphasizes integrating the arts into literacy instruction to leverage students' cultural assets, stimulating their cognitive processes and recognizing literacy's interdisciplinary role in learning. As we align literacy practices with state standards, high-stakes testing, and research-based methods, it's crucial for educators and society to embrace them. Traditionally, literacy instruction has prioritized written language, creating hierarchical structures that lead to learning gaps and inequitable opportunities. An arts-based CSLP framework addresses these issues by ensuring literacy includes diverse …
