Fan Works And The Elusive Border Between Derivative And Transformative Uses, Aaron Schwabach
Fan Works And The Elusive Border Between Derivative And Transformative Uses, Aaron Schwabach
Faculty Scholarship
When Professor Schwabach began writing about fanfic and other fan works over a decade ago it was a niche topic, mostly of interest to fellow fans. It has since generated dozens of articles and a small but steadily increasing amount of litigation. In addition to several previous articles on the topic, Professor Schwabach has contributed a book (Fan Fiction and Copyright) and some book chapters to this ongoing discourse.
When this subject was new each article had to begin with a lengthy explanation of what fanfic is, why fictional characters are or are not protected by copyright, how parody and …

Fan Works And The Elusive Border Between Derivative And Transformative Uses: A Fanfic Law Retrospective And An Optimistic Look Forward, Aaron Schwabach
Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review
The scholarly discourse on fanfic and other fan works emerged over a decade ago as a niche topic mostly of interest to fans. It has since generated dozens of articles and a small but steadily increasing amount of litigation. When the subject was new, each article had to begin with an explanation of what fan works are, why fictional characters are or are not protected by copyright, and how parody and fair use are related. This Article seeks to place a capstone on the author’s work during that early era of fanfic scholarship and to move the discourse forward by …

Synaptotagmin-9 (Syt9) is a Ca2+ sensor mediating fast synaptic release expressed in various parts of the brain. The presence and role of Syt9 in retina is unknown. We found evidence for Syt9 expression throughout the retina and created mice to conditionally eliminate Syt9 in a cre-dependent manner. We crossed Syt9fl/fl mice with Rho-iCre, HRGP-Cre, and CMV-Cre mice to generate mice in which Syt9 was eliminated from rods (rodSyt9CKO), cones (coneSyt9CKO), or whole animals (CMVSyt9). CMVSyt9 mice showed an increase in scotopic electroretinogram (ERG) b-waves evoked by bright flashes with no change in a-waves. Cone-driven photopic ERG b-waves were not significantly …
Nanofiber-Hydrogel Composite Scaffold Fabrication Methods For Peripheral Nerve Regeneration, Jacob Lee Carter
Nanofiber-Hydrogel Composite Scaffold Fabrication Methods For Peripheral Nerve Regeneration, Jacob Lee Carter
Theses and Dissertations
Nerve graft conduits (NGCs) are a rapidly advancing field for treating peripheral nerve injuries that aim to guide the growth of regenerating axons across damaged gaps. A more effective NGC can be manufactured by combining the use of nanofibers to act as guidewires within a 3-D hydrogel that imitates the extracellular matrix of nerve tissue. Several methods have been developed to embed aligned nanofibers in an ordered architecture within a hydrogel matrix. The first method involves layer-by-layer additive manufacturing to create NGCs with rows of polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofibers surrounded by a gelatin methacrylate (GelMe) hydrogel in a 3-D structure. A …

Aging Drives Cd8 T Cells To Functional Extremes: From Non-Specific Cytotoxicity To Tissue-Mediated Exhaustion, Irina Shchukina
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
CD8 T cells are a crucial component of the immune system, primarily responsible for executing the effector response against viral infections and cancer. Aging significantly impacts most immune cell types, with particularly dramatic changes observed in CD8 T cells. One major age-related difference is the marked decline in thymus activity, which leads to a substantial reduction in naive CD8 T cells and an increased abundance of memory CD8 T cells. Furthermore, recent work from our lab demonstrated that while young memory CD8 T cells are relatively homogeneous, memory CD8 T cells diverge into two subpopulations: PD1- memory CD8 T cells …

INTRODUCTION: Children in low socioeconomic status (SES) communities are at higher risk of exposure to lead (Pb) and potentially more severe adverse outcomes from Pb exposures. While the factors encompassing SES are complex, low SES households often have less enriching home environments and parent-child interactions. This study investigated the extent to which environmental/behavioral factors (quality of maternal care and richness of the postnatal environment) may modify adverse effects from Pb exposure.
METHODS: Long-Evans female rats were randomly assigned to Control (no Pb), Early Postnatal (EPN: birth through weaning), or Perinatal (PERI: 14 days pre-mating through weaning) Pb exposure groups. From …

Community-Based Nonprofit Approach To Period Poverty Among Women And Girls In Shelby County, Tennessee, Rosalind Stevenson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Period (menstruation) poverty affects women and girls in United States. In some U.S. cities, feminine hygiene items are becoming inaccessible and unaffordable to women and girls due to unequal taxation of feminine hygiene products. This case study involved exploring experiences of a Shelby County, Tennessee nonprofit’s female volunteers and recipients who receive free feminine hygiene products. Using a convenience sample of seven female participants, the feminine mystique theory was used to guide thematic interpretations via semistructured interviews involving gender-based pricing or pink taxes and effects of feminine hygiene affordability for women and girls. Resulting major themes included: free feminine hygiene …

Adequate dosing of antimicrobials is paramount for treating infections in critically ill patients undergoing kidney replacement therapy; however, little is known about antimicrobial removal by sustained low-efficiency dialysis (SLED). The objective was to quantify the removal of cefepime, daptomycin, meropenem, piperacillin–tazobactam, and vancomycin in patients undergoing SLED. Adult patients ≥18 years with acute kidney injury (AKI) or end-stage kidney disease receiving one of the select antimicrobials and requiring SLED were included. Blood and dialysate flow rates were maintained at 250 and 100 mL/min, respectively. Simultaneous arterial and venous blood samples for the analysis of antibiotic concentrations were collected hourly for …

Making choices about whether and when to engage cognitive effort are a common feature of everyday experience, with important consequences for academic, career, and health outcomes. Yet, despite their hypothesized importance, very little is understood about the underlying mechanisms that support this form of human cost-benefit decision-making. To investigate these mechanisms, we used the Cognitive Effort Discounting Paradigm (Cog-ED) during fMRI scanning to precisely quantify the neural encoding of varying cognitive effort demands relative to reward outcomes, within two distinct cognitive domains (working memory, speech comprehension). The findings provide strong evidence that the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) plays a …

Fairy Tales In Service Of Political Projects: “Hansel And Gretel” In Changing Political Regimes, Polona Tratnik
Fairy Tales In Service Of Political Projects: “Hansel And Gretel” In Changing Political Regimes, Polona Tratnik
Marvels & Tales
The production of fairy tales depends on political interests. The tales’ regimes of production and anticipated reception condition their inscribed ideological inclinations and erasures. I examine how Kinder- und Hausmärchen by the brothers Grimm contributed to nation-building and, focusing on “Hansel and Gretel,” how the changing regimes of production required omissions in the translations of the Grimms’ tales into Slovenian. I argue that the sui generis appropriation of the tale titled “Janko and Metka” by the writer France Bevk helped build a socialist nation. Finally, the article comments on some issues in capitalist regimes of fairy-tale production.

Ganoderma lucidum is a mushroom forming fungus that has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for over 2,000 years. G. lucidum, also known as lingzhi or reishi, is consumed in several Asian cultures to promote health and longevity. Bioactive molecules with anticancer properties have been isolated and characterized primarily from the species Ganoderma lucidum, and the cytotoxic potential of other species in the genus Ganoderma remains relatively unclear. Bioactive molecules isolated from mushroom fruiting bodies are demonstrated to have cytotoxicity against different cancer cell lines. Triterpenes and polysaccharides are the two major groups of compounds that exhibit antitumor and anti-inflammatory …

Skull morphogenesis is a complex, dynamic process involving two different germ layers and progressing to the coordinated, directional growth of individual bones. The mechanisms underlying directional growth toward the apex are not completely understood. Here, a microfluidic chip-based approach is utilized to test whether calvarial osteoblast progenitors undergo haptotaxis on a gradient of Fibronectin1 (FN1) via lamellipodia. Mimicking the embryonic cranial mesenchyme's FN1 pattern, FN1 gradients is established in the chip using computer modeling and fluorescent labeling. Primary mouse calvarial osteoblast progenitors are plated in the chip along an array of segmented gradients of adsorbed FN1. The study performs single-cell …
