A Case Study Of The Perceived Pedagogical Strategies Used To Increase Student Motivation And Effective Technology Use In The Secondary Classroom, Adam Herring
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this single-instrument case study is to understand the strategies that educators perceive to be effective in successfully increasing student motivation when using personal technology in the high school classroom at River Valley High School in the Southeast United States. The theory guiding this study is Ryan and Deci’s theory on self-determination as it examines the relationship between motivation and academic achievement. The central research question in this study, that is, how can relatedness, competency, and autonomy support the use of personal technology in the secondary education classroom, explores how personal technology could influence the perceived motivation of …
Equipping Church Leadership Through Team Ministry: A Dissertation-In-Praxis Model, Judith Aarian Hawkins
Equipping Church Leadership Through Team Ministry: A Dissertation-In-Praxis Model, Judith Aarian Hawkins
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Using teams in the workplace has become an efficient means to employ workers' creativity, productivity, and effectiveness (Ross et al., 2008). Likewise, ministry through teams offers the Church these same outcomes to meet its charge of the Great Commission (King James Bible, 1769/2017, Matthew 28:16-20). This research was implemented with BOLD Deliverance Ministries Incorporated (BOLD), a non-denomination church in Temple Hills, Maryland. The church’s theme of “Where together we equip the saints to serve all people” indicates an existing ideology of collaboration. This project aimed to build on this collaborative mindset by applying team leadership theory within a team ministry …
Behavioral And Neural Mechanisms Of Face-Specific Attention During Goal-Directed Visual Search, Jie Zhang, Xiaocang Zhu, Huihui Zhou, Shuo Wang
Behavioral And Neural Mechanisms Of Face-Specific Attention During Goal-Directed Visual Search, Jie Zhang, Xiaocang Zhu, Huihui Zhou, Shuo Wang
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Goal-directed visual attention is a fundamental cognitive process that enables animals to selectively focus on specific regions of the visual field while filtering out irrelevant information. However, given the domain specificity of social behaviors, it remains unclear whether attention to faces versus nonfaces recruits different neurocognitive processes. In this study, we simultaneously recorded activity from temporal and frontal nodes of the attention network while macaques performed a goal-directed visual search task. V4 and inferotemporal (IT) visual category-selective units, selected during cue presentation, discriminated fixations on targets and distractors during the search but were differentially engaged by face and house targets. …
The Cold War Never Ended, Paul Mitura
The Cold War Never Ended, Paul Mitura
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The two countries that played the largest role in defeating Nazi Germany were allies at one moment and enemies the next without any form of an attack or hostile military action. The unusual phenomenon of two world superpowers opposing each other for several decades without firing a shot in a worldwide ideological war was unique and confined only to this period of world history. This was a polarizing global event that was believed to have been titled such by Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and it remains unknown who coined the phrase "There have been three world wars; two hot, and …
The Nature Of Self-Evident Equality In The Declaration Of Independence And Its Implications For Jeffersonian Federalism, Thomas T. Cook
The Nature Of Self-Evident Equality In The Declaration Of Independence And Its Implications For Jeffersonian Federalism, Thomas T. Cook
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The foundation for human equality is central to the question of political discourse, and the basis for self-government, consent, and consensus. On what basis can two people enter into contract or agree to be governed if they are not equal? The Declaration of Independence with its appeal to Nature’s God and its establishment of “rights” as coming from that God firmly establishes human equality in a metaphysical reality outside of human decision to change that reality. The lack of human acknowledgement of that reality, historically, does not change that reality. Philosophers and political theorists might reason that it is based …

The aim of this study was to compare the microbial loads of patients with diabetic foot infections treated with negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) with and without irrigation with polyhexamethylene biguanide (NPWTi-P). This is a post hoc analysis of combined data of two randomized clinical trials. We evaluated people with diabetes treated with moderate and severe diabetic foot infections that required surgery. Tissue specimens were obtained after the initial surgery and following a second planned return to the operating room after 48-72 h of NPWT or NPWTi-P, prior to the second surgery. We used quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) to …
The Complex Relationship Between Tuberculosis And Hyperglycemia, Michelle Byers, Elizabeth Guy
The Complex Relationship Between Tuberculosis And Hyperglycemia, Michelle Byers, Elizabeth Guy
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
Hyperglycemia and tuberculosis are dual global pandemics. Each has a propulsive and amplifying effect on the other, and, because of this, we must consider hyperglycemia and tuberculosis together. Hyperglycemia is immunosuppressive and increases the risk of tuberculosis by threefold. It also leads to a more advanced presentation of pulmonary tuberculosis, thus increasing the likelihood of being smear positive and having cavitating lesions, and it impacts the duration and outcomes of treatment, with an increased one year mortality seen in patients with tuberculosis and diabetes. Additionally, any degree of hyperglycemia can have an impact on susceptibility to tuberculosis, and this effect …

Rediscovering Publicly Available Single-Cell Data With The Disco Platform, Jinmiao Chen
Singapore Open Research Conference 2024
Since its inception in 2009, single-cell RNA-seq techniques have evolved, increasing throughput and reducing costs. With a growing number of published studies, efficient data retrieval is crucial. DISCO was created as a comprehensive database of single-cell RNA-seq data, enabling exploration of cell types and gene expressions in various tissues. Now, DISCO hosts over 100 million single-cell profiles from 16,734 samples, reflecting a fivefold increase since its first version. We have curated metadata, categorized samples, and refined cell type annotations using a harmonized reference. DISCO platform provides online tools for data integration, cell type annotation, projecting query dataset to atlases, and …
Vitamin D Clinical Relevance In The Recovery From Traumatic Brain Injury Among The Military Population, Yuisa Mariceli Colón
Vitamin D Clinical Relevance In The Recovery From Traumatic Brain Injury Among The Military Population, Yuisa Mariceli Colón
Theses
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) still remains a difficult disorder to treat. TBI has been associated to chronic neuroinflammation and a high risk for neurodegenerative disorders. Since 2001 between ten to twenty percent of all deployed military members have suffered a combat-related TBI. Nearly twenty to thirty percent of those will experience chronic cognitive, behavioral and somatic symptoms after suffering a TBI. This review found compelling evidence to support that the pathology of TBI is closely associated with neuroprotective mechanisms of vitamin D.
The Feasibility And Acceptability Of A Randomized Controlled Trial Comparing A Companion Dog-Walking Intervention To An Attention Control Education Intervention On Depression, Anxiety, Serum Cortisol, And Quality Of Life In Adult Intensive Care Unit Survivors, Lindsey Nelson
Sigma Foundation for Nursing Research Grant Reports
ICU survivors are at risk for persistent anxiety and depression after hospital discharge. Quality evidence supporting innovative home and community-based interventions that improve psychological health in ICU survivors is needed. The use of companion dogs to improve health and wellbeing is an innovative strategy not previously explored in the ICU survivor population. The purpose of this RCT was to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of a companion dog walking intervention compared to an attention control education intervention for adult ICU survivors and to compare exploratory outcome trends related to depression, anxiety, serum cortisol, and quality of life.
Chaucerian Echoes: Chivalric Tradition And Gender Construction In George Eliot's Middlemarch, Gillian Guy
Chaucerian Echoes: Chivalric Tradition And Gender Construction In George Eliot's Middlemarch, Gillian Guy
James Madison Undergraduate Research Journal (JMURJ)
George Eliot’s Middlemarch critiques Victorian social and gender norms through characters' relationships with each other and with horseback riding. This paper argues that Geoffrey Chaucer’s Troilus and Criseyde informs the symbolism and literary tropes Eliot uses in crafting her narrative. Analysis of Chaucerian tropes of courtly love and medieval codes of chivalry reveals how characters either maintain or undermine traditional Victorian conventions of masculinity and femininity; these dynamics are primarily seen through horse ownership and horseback riding. One protagonist in particular, Will Ladislaw, is examined in this paper as representing ideas of androgyny through his unconventional relationships with horses and …

Teaching Writing: Fostering Joy In Writing Through “Commentarying”, Ellin Kim
New Jersey English Journal
For over 15 years, the author taught at an after-school English Language Arts center. Initially emphasizing perfection, enthusiasm waned. A graduate course changed the author's views on writing, stressing personal reflections. Implementing this, students' perceptions shifted, using "commentarying" to foster understanding and engagement in discussions on topics such as racism.

Using Chatgpt For The Acquisition Of Computational Thinking Skills: A Case Of African Indigenous Games, Dick Ng’Ambi, Mohamed A. Mitwally, Mwewa Peter, Oluwaseun Oyekola
The African Journal of Information Systems
This paper proposes using a ChatGPT-generated algorithm for an indigenous game to mediate the acquisition of computational thinking skills. The paper seeks to answer the question: How can the ChatGPT-mediated algorithm for indigenous games foster the acquisition of computational thinking skills? Using a Participatory Action Research approach, 19 collaborators from 11 African countries gathered 185 indigenous games. The paper focuses on one of those games that is played in all 11 countries. The paper concludes that involving collaborators, who are indigenous members of their communities and have experiential knowledge of the game, led to their acquisition of computational thinking skills.

Otolith organs in the inner ear and neuromasts in the fish lateral-line harbor two popu- lations of hair cells oriented to detect stimuli in opposing directions. The underlying mechanism is highly conserved: the transcription factor EMX2 is regionally expressed in just one hair cell popu- lation and acts through the receptor GPR156 to reverse cell orientation relative to the other popu- lation. In mouse and zebrafish, loss of Emx2 results in sensory organs that harbor only one hair cell orientation and are not innervated properly. In zebrafish, Emx2 also confers hair cells with reduced mechanosensory properties. Here, we leverage mouse …

Antitrust policy in the United States has always had special rules for dominant firms. As Justice Scalia once observed:
Where a defendant maintains substantial market power, his activities are examined through a special lens: Behavior that might otherwise not be of concern to the antitrust laws—or that might even be viewed as procompetitive—can take on exclusionary connotations when practiced by a monopolist.

Abstract
This study is a reflective analysis of the discursive construction of the social studies and the teaching of history from medieval scholasticism, through Enlightenment humanism, and into our posthumanist landscape. As an exploration of the foundations of Western thought, with an emphasis on humanism as it has historically affected construction of the social studies, this investigation focuses on theorists, praxis, curriculum development, and teacher identity. My research examined the pedagogical and curriculum choices for the teaching of history along with the intersection of the humanities and humanism from the Enlightenment through the criticalities of the 20th century, and into …

The term “offshore” with regards to aquaculture has hitherto encompassed various perspectives, including technology, geographic location, legal jurisdiction, and more. To resolve the ambiguity in this term and understand its implications for current and future aquaculture development, “offshore” should be resolved into two separate metrics: distance from shore and energy exposure. The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) distinguishes between internal waters, territorial sea, contiguous zone, exclusive economic zone (EEZ), and the high seas, but currently has no precise definition for “offshore” in its provisions, and therefore no applicable laws pertaining to “offshore” aquaculture. Regulating a …
