Informasi

At present, most students in the world, as well as Indonesia, especially senior high school students, have used the Internet for various purposes. Internet content presented on different platforms can now be accessed easily. Consciously or not, this media content influences their behavior. There is a lot of freely submitted content, which is worth knowing the impact. The question related to this study is which internet content is often used and affects high school students’ behavior. Qualitative methods with phenomenology have informants from the western, central, and eastern parts of Indonesia. Data were collected using observation, Google Forms, and interviews …

Shading The Future: A Gis-Based Approach To Optimal Tree Planting For Urban Heat Mitigation At Northern Michigan University, Mary Kelly

Conspectus Borealis

Increasing tree canopy cover is a powerful tool for mitigating the effects of urban heat on the natural and built environment, specifically the effects of ecosystem stress and air quality. Heat can also place stress on human health. Northern Michigan University (NMU) is proposing to build a new tree nursery on campus, which would help alleviate urban heat in Marquette. Finding suitable areas at NMU to plant new trees from this nursery is an essential component of this effort. A goal of my project was to provide this helpful information. Using GIS and remote sensing techniques in ArcGIS Pro and …

What The World Has Learned About Their Governments During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Olga Shvetsova Dec 2023

What The World Has Learned About Their Governments During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Olga Shvetsova

Political Science Faculty Scholarship

As we take stock of all aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic history, one important lesson to be learned concerns government behavior. While defense by immunity was in the works in vaccine research labs, defense by government action took the front seat, and political incumbents in every country and locale became "doctors to the public.” Did some governments perform better than others? Were there any predictable or explainable shortcomings in their crisis responses? Will governments and countries that underperformed in this crisis fall short in other crises where responsible leadership might be required? The contributors to this volume compare and contrast …

Commonalities And Differences In Governments’ Covid-19 Public Health Responses Around The World, Olga Shvetsova, Andrei Zhirnov Dec 2023

Commonalities And Differences In Governments’ Covid-19 Public Health Responses Around The World, Olga Shvetsova, Andrei Zhirnov

Political Science Faculty Scholarship

As the world enters the era of increased frequency of global health crises and natural disasters, with climate change looming as an ever-present threat, how we govern ourselves matters for the ways in which we will live through these difficult times. The authors in this volume provide observations backed by mixed methods of analysis on the many ways in which government organization and political realities affect crisis response and crisis management. In this chapter, we further strengthen the validity of their findings with large N global sample analyses where the timing and stringency of the adoption of public health policies …

The Benefits Of Drama Therapy With Children And Adolescents, Rebecca Gallant

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Drama therapy, as defined by the North American Drama Therapy Association is “the intentional use of drama and/or theater processes to achieve therapeutic goals…an embodied practice that is active and experiential. This approach can provide the context for participants to tell their stories, set goals and solve problems, express feelings, or achieve catharsis” (NADTA 2021). NADTA was established in 1979 as an organization to advocate for drama therapy and to ensure that drama therapists are upholding the proper qualifications to practice. As noted by the organization, drama therapy can be used in a variety of different settings, including classrooms, nursing …

Evaluating Militant Decision-Making With Information Science: The Irish Republican Movement During The "Troubles", Joshua C. Eastin, Emily Kalah Gade, Michael Gabbay Dec 2023

Evaluating Militant Decision-Making With Information Science: The Irish Republican Movement During The "Troubles", Joshua C. Eastin, Emily Kalah Gade, Michael Gabbay

Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Why do militant groups decide to escalate or deescalate their use of violence in conflict? Examining the case of the “Troubles” in Northern Ireland, we analyze groups that adopt violence as a political strategy and evaluate factors that influence its application. To do so, we adopt a novel empirical approach to the study of militant groups. Drawn from information science, this approach enables estimation of variable influence and uncertainty within structured case studies, and is thus ideal for topics such as militant decision-making where systematic data collection is difficult.

We report the discovery of two TESS sub-Neptunes orbiting the early M dwarf TOI-904 (TIC 261257684). Both exoplanets, TOI-904 b and c, were initially observed in TESS Sector 12 with twin sizes of 2.426 (+0.163)/(-0.157) and 2.167 (+0.130)/(-0.118) R⊕, respectively. Through observations in five additional sectors in the TESS primary mission and the first and second extended missions, the orbital periods of the planets were measured to be 10.887 ± 0.001 and 83.999 ± 0.001 days, respectively. Reconnaissance radial velocity measurements (taken with EULER/CORALIE and SMARTS/CHIRON) and high-resolution speckle imaging with adaptive optics (obtained from SOAR/HRCAM and Gemini …

Sounding Ethics: Musical Signification Of Moral Choices In Video Games, Hayden Mesnick Dec 2023

Sounding Ethics: Musical Signification Of Moral Choices In Video Games, Hayden Mesnick

Honors Projects

Interactivity is what distinguishes video games as a medium. In “moral choice video games,” or games in which the moral alignment of player choices affects plot and gameplay, the music often reflects the branching storylines. While scholarship exists that explores musical signifiers in video games, and scholarship alike exists that investigates moral choice video games, a gap in literature exists at the juncture of these two topics. This paper explores two moral choice video games—Undertale (Toby Fox, 2015) and Red Dead Redemption 2 (Rockstar Games, 2018)—in order to identify musical signifiers used by each game’s composer to represent these levels …

Reassessment Of Amblyscirtes Hegon (Hesperiidae) As A Complex Of Four Distinct Species Revealed By Genomic Analysis, Harry Pavulaan, Ricky Patterson, Nick V. Grishin Dec 2023

Reassessment Of Amblyscirtes Hegon (Hesperiidae) As A Complex Of Four Distinct Species Revealed By Genomic Analysis, Harry Pavulaan, Ricky Patterson, Nick V. Grishin

The Taxonomic Report of the International Lepidoptera Survey

After the discovery of a unique phenotype in the southern United States with a different ventral ground color than nominotypical Amblyscirtes hegon (Scudder, 1863), which occurs in the northeastern United States, genomic analysis revealed that A. hegon is a species complex. Phenotypic, genitalic, and genomic differences of the complex are presented here. Four species are identified: A. hegon; A. nemoris (W. H. Edwards, 1864), stat. rest.; A. matheri Patterson, Pavulaan & Grishin, sp. n. (TL: USA, Mississippi, Warren County); and A. gelidus Grishin, Patterson & Pavulaan, sp. n. (TL: USA, Michigan, Van Buren County).

Examining Steam Education Programs Within Art Museums: “A” Is For Art Museums, Kylie B. Corkern

Art 895 Research Papers

This case study considers the role that art museums can serve while using science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) education. Through a qualitative inquiry, cases from literature are examined and opportunities are shared for best practices that art museums can use with STEAM education. This study not only advocates for art museums to include STEAM opportunities but also the collaboration between schools and art museums to be able to create these possibilities. Finding these concepts and ideas will show the unique position that art museums can play in STEAM education. This study will also share the influence in expanding …

“An Exile They Gladly Embrace”: Queer Ecology In E.M. Forster’S Maurice, Bridget Medo Dec 2023

“An Exile They Gladly Embrace”: Queer Ecology In E.M. Forster’S Maurice, Bridget Medo

Theses

E.M. Forster’s novel Maurice, first written from 1913 to 1914 and published posthumously in 1971, is often noted for being the only one of Forster’s novels to feature an explicitly gay protagonist. This, as well as the fact that the novel has a happy ending, is what kept Forster from publishing it until after his death (Forster 250). According to Forster, Maurice “was the direct result of a visit to Edward Carpenter at Milthorpe [sic]” where Carpenter’s partner, George Merrill, touched Forster on the backside and apparently made a strong enough impression that Forster began writing Maurice right away (Forster …

Vía Cruising: Queerizando El Escándalo De La Cruz, Hugo Cordova Quero, Anderson Fabián Santos Meza, David De Jesús De Pascual, Cruz Edgardo Torres Dec 2023

Vía Cruising: Queerizando El Escándalo De La Cruz, Hugo Cordova Quero, Anderson Fabián Santos Meza, David De Jesús De Pascual, Cruz Edgardo Torres

Conexión Queer: Revista Latinoamericana y Caribeña de Teologías Queer

The article addresses the queer experience of the «via crucis» in contrast to the traditional narrative. It does so by exploring how gender identity and sexual orientation influence imposed crossings and social exclusion. Through the phenomenon of cruising, the examination of the stations of the cross reveal the segregation and the search for connection in the queer community. Thus, it challenged conformity and advocates for queer redemption while reinterpreting the meaning of the cross in a contemporary context. The entire (re)examination of the «via crucis» proposes a reflection on the politics of crucifixions and suggests alternatives to transform cis-heteropatriarchal oppression …

The Discursive Fallacies Surrounding «Gender Ideology», Maricel Mena-López, Fidel Mauricio Ramírez Aristizábal

Conexión Queer: Revista Latinoamericana y Caribeña de Teologías Queer

Discourses surrounding «Gender Ideology» in Latin America display regional nuances, infiltrating various social strata. In Colombia, misinformation taints the narrative, exacerbated by the absence of a robust counter-movement to untangle the intricate discourse. This article traces the concept’s evolution, examining its impact on Colombian and broader Latin American religious fundamentalism. By exposing prevalent discursive fallacies, the objective is to contribute academically to the debate on a potent strategy that —in recent years — has aimed to hinder progress and erode the rights of women and the LGBTIQ+ community. The analysis illuminates a significant challenge impeding societal advancement.

«Escándalo, Es Un Escándalo»: Encarnación, Liberación Y Evangelio Desde Una Perspectiva Teológica Queer/Cuir, Hugo Cordova Quero, Cristian Mor, Anderson Fabián Santos Meza, Saúl Serna Segura

Conexión Queer: Revista Latinoamericana y Caribeña de Teologías Queer

This article explores the inherent scandal within theological discourse, particularly regarding the portrayal of Jesus as both human and divine and the necessity to acknowledge his humanity alongside his divinity. Throughout Western history, individuals of diverse gender and sexual identities have been marginalized within Christianity, underscoring the need for theological discourse to evolve alongside social dynamics and policies. In the Global South, Latin America and the Caribe emerge as a locus of diverse theological perspectives challenging hegemonic narratives, notably cis-heteropatriarchal and Eurocentric theologies. Queer theologies from this context aim to dismantle oppressive power structures and advocate for inclusivity and dignity …

Hacia Una Teología Vih Positiva: Una Lectura Hermenéutica Queer Del Libro De Job, Cruz Edgardo Torres, Hugo Cordova Quero

Conexión Queer: Revista Latinoamericana y Caribeña de Teologías Queer

This article aims to trace the history of hiv/aids in Central America, with particular emphasis on El Salvador. Its first section presents a periodization detailing the evolution of the region's response and understanding of hiv/aids in the social context. The second section focuses on a detailed periodization of how faith communities reacted to the presence of hiv/aids, especially highlighting their responses to those affected. The third section of the article provides a biblical, theological, and pastoral perspective from the earliest times to the current response of faith communities to hiv/aids.

Habitar La Adamacidad: Contribuciones Desde Una Teología Feminista Queer, Mercy Aguilar Contreras Dec 2023

Habitar La Adamacidad: Contribuciones Desde Una Teología Feminista Queer, Mercy Aguilar Contreras

Conexión Queer: Revista Latinoamericana y Caribeña de Teologías Queer

Queer feminist theology emerges as a hybridization of corporeal experiences subjected to diverse mechanisms of control over life, body, and sexuality. This process of theologization questions the approach traditionally centered on cis- heteropatriarchal values, evidencing that classical theologies participate in the bio-technologies of reproduction of the body, gender, and sexuality. It highlights the historical influence of all theology in the construction of cis-heterocentered, patriarchalized and racialized bodies. The article proposes to (re)consider «adamacy» in order to rescue the difference of gender and sexuality present in sacred texts, thus liberating bodies from cis-heteronormative closets.

Sociedad Disciplinaria, Poder Pastoral Y Marginalidad: Una Lectura Hermenéutica Queer De La Perícopa De Marcos 3.20-35, Mario Antonio Luna Rivas Dec 2023

Sociedad Disciplinaria, Poder Pastoral Y Marginalidad: Una Lectura Hermenéutica Queer De La Perícopa De Marcos 3.20-35, Mario Antonio Luna Rivas

Conexión Queer: Revista Latinoamericana y Caribeña de Teologías Queer

This article proposes constructing the socio-analytical mediation of Mark 3.20-21, using the concepts of disciplinary society, pastoral power, and marginality to recreate its context. From a queer perspective, the system of home and family, places determined by the cis-heteropatriarchal system, is critiqued. It highlights that Jesus —challenging power dynamics— proposes a family and lifestyle from marginality. Although labeled as «queer» —in the sense of «odd» or «deviant»— I affirm that Jesus —with alternative masculinity— subverts the cis-heteropatriarchal project of domination. The analysis contributes to a deeper understanding of Mark 3.20-21 from a queer hermeneutical lens.
