Rupturing Tradition: Theorizing Black Women’S Place In The Discipline Through The Disruptive Rhetoric Of Sanctuary, Celnisha Leta Dangerfield

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Black women need refuge from physical, mental, emotional and rhetorical violence. However, refuge that does not foster liberation can never offer the full protection of sanctuary. Black women uniquely understand that the only way to ensure full access to sanctuary is by circumventing place. Yet, people and scholarly disciplines overlook their valuable, experiential awareness of place. This dissertation takes an intersectional approach to place by analyzing Black women’s contributions to the rich rhetorical tradition. When we look to the past for guidance, it is easy to see Black women’s struggles are not bound by place or time. An analysis of …

Since the discovery of gigantic magnetoresistance and the advent of spintronics, magnetic materials have become ubiquitous in modern technology. As such, a wide range of research areas within this field are being continuously explored for potential means to improve device scaling, decrease energy consumption, or increase speed, as well as to understand the fundamental physics governing spin order at the micro- and nanoscale. One of the avenues under current investigation involves the use of the spin-orbit interaction in systems with broken inversion symmetry through the introduction of interfaces or compositional variations. I will introduce the theory of micromagnetism and demonstrate …

"Sometimes Human Places Create Inhuman Monsters': An Examination Of The Monstrous And The Abject In American Literature, Carol Wardell Dec 2023

"Sometimes Human Places Create Inhuman Monsters': An Examination Of The Monstrous And The Abject In American Literature, Carol Wardell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

“‘Sometimes Human Places Create Inhuman Monsters’: An Examination of the Monstrous and the Abject in American Gothic Literature” defines “characters” in select texts as monstrous beings. These identified beings engage Julia Kristeva’s abject and differ from a grotesque. Whereas a grotesque character is often supportive in relation to the development of the story, the characters I have identified are crucial to the text. Without these characters and the abjection these monstrous beings evoke, the story would not develop in the same manner, have the same repercussions, nor have the same representation of cultural anxieties. In order to develop a definition …

Managing Soil Ph For Crop Production In Calcareous-Alkaline Soil, Cody Zesiger, Jody Gale, Matt Yost, Grant Cardon

All Current Publications

In semiarid soils of the Western U.S., altering soil pH is not easily accomplished nor straightforward. Utah’s soil pH range can be 1,000 times more acidic or alkaline than neutral (7.0) pH soils. In semiarid regions, typical high-pH soils are also calcareous, meaning there is a large amount of solid calcium carbonate (lime) in the soil. When soil-acidifying amendments are added to these soils, the lime dissolves and counteracts any of the applied soil-acidifying amendments. This fact sheet explains how to identify whether crop symptoms are related to soil pH, how to perform an in-field test for soil pH buffering …

Employment Leave For Early Pregnancy Endings: A Biopolitical Reproductive Governance Analysis In England And Wales, Al Middlemiss, I Boncori, J Brewis, J Davies, Vl Newton

School of Nursing and Midwifery

When a pregnancy ends in England and Wales, statutory time away from paid employment is limited to circumstances where there is a live birth or stillbirth. Forms of leave, such as Maternity Leave or Paternity Leave, depend on parental status derived from the civil registration of a new person or a post-viability stillbirth. Other early pregnancy endings, such as miscarriage or abortion, do not provide specific time off work after pregnancy. This paper uses the concept of reproductive governance to analyze current and shifting biopolitical truth discourses, strategies of intervention, and modes of subjectification around post-pregnancy leaves. It shows how …

Antibody Binding Captures High Energy State Of An Antigen: The Case Of Nsp1 Sars-Cov-2 As Revealed By Hydrogen-Deuterium Exchange Mass Spectrometry, Ravi Kant, Nawneet Mishra, Michael L Gross

2020-Current year OA Pubs

We describe an investigation using structural mass spectrometry (MS) of the impact of two antibodies, 15497 and 15498, binding the highly flexible SARS-CoV-2 Nsp1 protein. We determined the epitopes and paratopes involved in the antibody-protein interactions by using hydrogen-deuterium exchange MS (HDX-MS). Notably, the Fab (Fragment antigen binding) for antibody 15498 captured a high energy form of the antigen exhibiting significant conformational changes that added flexibility over most of the Nsp1 protein. The Fab for antibody 15497, however, showed usual antigen binding behavior, revealing local changes presumably including the binding site. These findings illustrate an unusual antibody effect on an …

Advanced Diffusion Mri Technique And Applications In Placenta And Brain, Zhexian Sun

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Among a series of contrasts of MRI, diffusion MRI (dMRI) is different from conventional MRI by its ability to capture information about the random movement of water molecules and their interaction with local tissue microstructures. This capability holds the potential to reveal intricate subvoxel microstructural information linked to pathological changes, offering potential imaging biomarkers. A higher-order diffusion analysis model helps to yield more accurate and specific parameters but requires more extensive parameter tuning and higher image quality. In this study, we firstly fine-tuned the previously developed diffusion basis spectrum imaging (DBSI) method to strike a balance between efficiency and accuracy …

Interleukin-1 Induces Cfos Expression In Astrocytes In The Hippocampus Of Mice, Christopher Vargas Dec 2023

Interleukin-1 Induces Cfos Expression In Astrocytes In The Hippocampus Of Mice, Christopher Vargas

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2020 - Present

The Interleukin-1 (IL-1) cytokine is responsible for various processes within the central nervous system (CNS) relating to immune responses, sleep, and memory consolidation, however the interaction between different IL-1 responding cell types is still largely unknown. cFOS is an immediate early gene (IEG) which is typically used as a cellular activity marker. IL-1’s role in modulating neuronal activity in the CNS is still under debate. Targeted Recombination in Active Populations (TRAP) is a genetic technique to identify cell activity. This is done through a tamoxifen-inducible, Cre recombinase using the Fos promoter which reports cell activity via cFOS expression in the …

High-Fidelity Large-Diversity Monoclonal Mammalian Cell Libraries By Cell Cycle Arrested Recombinase-Mediated Cassette Exchange, Chuan Chen, Zening Wang, Minhyo Kang, Ki Baek Lee, Xin Ge

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Mammalian cells carrying defined genetic variations have shown great potentials in both fundamental research and therapeutic development. However, their full use was limited by lack of a robust method to construct large monoclonal high-quality combinatorial libraries. This study developed cell cycle arrested recombinase-mediated cassette exchange (aRMCE), able to provide monoclonality, precise genomic integration and uniform transgene expression. Via optimized nocodazole-mediated mitotic arrest, 20% target gene replacement efficiency was achieved without antibiotic selection, and the improved aRMCE efficiency was applicable to a variety of tested cell clones, transgene targets and transfection methods. As a demonstration of this versatile method, we performed …

Immunoproximity Biotinylation Reveals The Axon Initial Segment Proteome, Wei Zhang, Yu Fu, Luxin Peng, Yuki Ogawa, Xiaoyun Ding, Anne Rasband, Xinyue Zhou, Maya Shelly, Matthew N Rasband, Peng Zou

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

The axon initial segment (AIS) is a specialized neuronal compartment required for action potential generation and neuronal polarity. However, understanding the mechanisms regulating AIS structure and function has been hindered by an incomplete knowledge of its molecular composition. Here, using immuno-proximity biotinylation we further define the AIS proteome and its dynamic changes during neuronal maturation. Among the many AIS proteins identified, we show that SCRIB is highly enriched in the AIS both in vitro and in vivo, and exhibits a periodic architecture like the axonal spectrin-based cytoskeleton. We find that ankyrinG interacts with and recruits SCRIB to the AIS. However, …
