Investigating Telomere Lengths In Chestnut-Crowned Babblers, Gabriella Rose Beberg
Investigating Telomere Lengths In Chestnut-Crowned Babblers, Gabriella Rose Beberg
Honors Thesis
Telomeres are chromosomal elements that protect and maintain genes as DNA replicates in many organisms. As individuals age and DNA replicates, telomeres often shorten; thus, telomere length often corresponds with an individual’s lifespan, and early-life decreases in telomere length can be predictive of longevity. Here, I investigated the relationship between telomere length and developmental environment in a cooperatively breeding species, the chestnut-crowned babbler (Pomatostomus ruficeps; CCB). Cooperative species are unique, as some individuals give up their own breeding opportunities to help rear the offspring of others; further, cooperative breeding systems generate considerably more variation in adult carers, which …
Residential Indoor Air Quality Study – Assessment And Mitigation, Giovanni Cerrato
Residential Indoor Air Quality Study – Assessment And Mitigation, Giovanni Cerrato
Mechanical Engineering Theses
An increased awareness in residential indoor air quality (IAQ) has led to an increase in technologies that assist in improving IAQ. Two such technologies include Electro-static (ES) air cleaners and Photocatalytic Oxidizing (PCO) air cleaners. ES air cleaners remove particulate matter from indoor air, but are known to emit ozone, a contaminant, as a by-product. PCO air cleaners abate gaseous pollutants (i.e., Volatile Organic Compounds, VOCs); however, a lack of testing standards creates confusion about their effectiveness in improving IAQ in a real residential home. On the other hand, environmental variables such as temperature and humidity were found to affect …

Us State Vaccine Mandates Did Not Influence Covid-19 Vaccination Rates But Reduced Uptake Of Covid-19 Boosters And Flu Vaccines Compared To Bans On Vaccine Restrictions, Stephen A. Rains, Adam S. Richards
Us State Vaccine Mandates Did Not Influence Covid-19 Vaccination Rates But Reduced Uptake Of Covid-19 Boosters And Flu Vaccines Compared To Bans On Vaccine Restrictions, Stephen A. Rains, Adam S. Richards
Open Access Fund Publications
During the COVID-19 pandemic, some US states mandated vaccination for certain citizens. We used state-level data from the CDC to test whether vaccine mandates predicted changes in COVID-19 vaccine uptake, as well as related voluntary behaviors involving COVID-19 boosters and seasonal influenza vaccines. Results showed that COVID-19 vaccine adoption did not significantly change in the weeks before and after states implemented vaccine mandates, suggesting that mandates did not directly impact COVID-19 vaccination. Compared to states that banned vaccine restrictions, however, states with mandates had lower levels of COVID-19 booster adoption as well as adult and child flu vaccination, especially when …

Finding Ideal Parameters For Recycled Material Fused Particle Fabrication-Based 3d Printing Using An Open Source Software Implementation Of Particle Swarm Optimization, Shane Oberloier, Nicholas G. Whisman, Joshua M. Pearce
Michigan Tech Publications
As additive manufacturing rapidly expands the number of materials including waste plastics and composites, there is an urgent need to reduce the experimental time needed to identify optimized printing parameters for novel materials. Computational intelligence (CI) in general and particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithms in particular have been shown to accelerate finding optimal printing parameters. Unfortunately, the implementation of CI has been prohibitively complex for noncomputer scientists. To overcome these limitations, this article develops, tests, and validates PSO Experimenter, an easy-to-use open-source platform based around the PSO algorithm and applies it to optimizing recycled materials. Specifically, PSO Experimenter is used …

More U.S. Women Of Childbearing Age, But Fewer Have Given Birth, Kenneth M. Johnson
Carsey Publications
In this brief, Senior Demographer Kenneth Johnson reports that, in 2022, there were 21.9 million women aged 20–39 who had not given birth in the United States. This is 4.7 million more childless women of prime child-bearing age than would have been expected given fertility patterns prior to the Great Recession. In 2022, there were 9 percent more women 20 to 39 than in 2006, but the share who had never had a child was up by 37 percent.
The cumulative result of fewer women having children and diminishing fertility levels was 9.6 million fewer U.S. births between 2008 and …

Engaging Stakeholders To Achieve The Sdgs: The Case Of The Province Of Bataan, Sherilyn F. Valdecañas, Maria Assunta C. Cuyegkeng
Journal of Management for Global Sustainability
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (2030 ASD) was designed to address global problems like poverty, conservation of the planet, and peace and prosperity. Successfully pursuing it, however, will be highly dependent on how local and regional governments implement the agenda—the rapid realization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) would involve various actors ranging from civil society organizations to the academe, the corporate sector, and many private individuals. This paper presents a case study on stakeholder engagement undertaken at the local level to achieve the SDGs, specifically in the Philippine province of Bataan. The selection of Bataan Province stems from …

Center for Translational Medicine Faculty Papers
Asthma is a chronic inflammatory airway disease characterized by airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR), inflammation, and goblet cell hyperplasia. Multiple cytokines, including IFNγ, IL-4, and IL-13 are associated with asthma; however, the mechanisms underlying the effects of these cytokines remain unclear. Here, we report a significant increase in the expression of IL-31RA, but not its cognate ligand IL-31, in mouse models of allergic asthma. In support of this, IFNγ, IL-4, and IL-13 upregulated IL-31RA but not IL-31 in both human and mice primary airway smooth muscle cells (ASMC) isolated from the airways of murine and human lungs. Importantly, the loss of IL-31RA …

Evaluation Of Various Turbulence Models For Turbulent Separated Flow Over A Model Two-Dimensional Bump, Xuehui Qian
Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Independent Study
In this paper, performance of several turbulence models is evaluated by computing the turbulent separated flow over a 2D bump using the RANS equations. The turbulence models considered are the Spalart-Allmaras (SA), SST k-ω, and Wray-Agarwal (WA) models. The geometry of the 2D bump is the centerline geometry of the NASA/Virginia Tech (VT) 3D BeVERLI hill bump. Since the experimental data is available only for the 3D bump, the goal of this paper is to compare the numerical solutions using the three turbulence models on a series of grids from coarse to fine. The experimental data of the 3D bump …

Social media is a powerful communication tool and a reflection of our digital environment. Social media acted as an augmenter and influencer during and after COVID-19. Many of the people sharing social media posts were not actually aware of their mental health status. This situation warrants to automate the detection of mental disorders. This paper presents a methodology for the detection of mental disorders using micro facial expressions. Micro-expressions are momentary, involuntary facial expressions that can be indicative of deeper feelings and mental states. Nevertheless, manually detecting and interpreting micro-expressions can be rather challenging. A deep learning HybridMicroNet model, based …
The Representation Of Third-Party Helping Interactions In Infancy, Laura Schlingloff-Nemecz, Denis Tatone, Gergely Csibra
The Representation Of Third-Party Helping Interactions In Infancy, Laura Schlingloff-Nemecz, Denis Tatone, Gergely Csibra
School of Psychology
Despite numerous findings on the sophisticated inferences that human infants draw from observing third-party helping interactions, currently there is no theoretical account of how infants come to understand such events in the first place. After reviewing the available evidence in infants, we describe an account of how human adults understand helping actions. According to this mature concept, helping is a second-order, goal-directed action aiming to increase the utility of another agent (the Helpee) via reducing the cost, or increasing the reward, of the Helpee's own goal-directed action. We then identify the cognitive prerequisites for conceiving helping in this way and …
Drawing About Writing: Exploring Egyptian Middle School Students’ Writing Motivation And Perceptions, Maryam Elbayady
Drawing About Writing: Exploring Egyptian Middle School Students’ Writing Motivation And Perceptions, Maryam Elbayady
Theses and Dissertations
The principal aim of this study is to explore Egyptian middle school students’ perceptions of their writing experiences using artistic expression, specifically drawings. It also aims to understand their levels of writing motivation using the Self-Beliefs, Writing-Beliefs, and Attitude Survey (SWAS) (Wright et al., 2019). Finally, it examines the relationships among participants’ perceptions, motivation, and their narrative writing performance. The view that students’ voices are valuable to research geared towards school improvement has largely propelled this study (Bland, 2018; Zumbrunn et al., 2017). In addition, due to the limited literature about middle school students enrolled at private Egyptian schools, this …

This study aims to investigate the role of the private sector in advancing women’s economic empowerment and gender-based violence prevention with a focus on post-conflict countries. It explores challenges facing them, and opportunities to be seized by governments and other stakeholders in this regard. The study also sheds light on the gap in the private sector’s awareness and commitment to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and to implement the UN Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda in post-conflict countries. It explores the different possible engagements of the private sector in response to the research question. The thesis also …
Acid Attack: How Escherichia Coli Strains Resist Acid Stress, Lindsey Miller
Acid Attack: How Escherichia Coli Strains Resist Acid Stress, Lindsey Miller
Honors Theses
The systems used by Escherichia coli to combat heightened levels of acidity within their environment are varied and complex. Four distinct systems used by E. coli to resist acid-induced stress were identified in 2004 by Foster (1), though six now are known today. These systems include the glucose-repressed, glutamate-dependent, arginine-dependent, lysine-dependent, ornithine-dependent, and serine-dependent acid resistance systems. Each system is also known by its corresponding abbreviation, AR1-AR6. What is known about each system varies due to identification date, complexity of the pathway, and amount of research completed. Within this paper, each system will be identified and the pathway defined, combining …
