Improved Image Recognition Via Synthetic Plants Using 3d Modelling With Stochastic Variations, Chris C. Napier, David M. Cook, Leisa Armstrong, Dean Diepeveen
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This research extends previous plant modelling using L-systems by means of a novel arrangement comprising synthetic plants and a refined global wheat dataset in combination with a synthetic inference application. The study demonstrates an application with direct recognition of real plant stereotypes, and augmentation via a plant-wide stochastic growth variation structure. The study showed that the automatic annotation and counting of wheat heads using the Global Wheat dataset images provides a time and cost saving over traditional manual approaches and neural networks. This study introduces a novel synthetic inference application using a plant-wide stochastic variation system, resulting in improved structural …

Possessing neither purse nor sword, the unelected US Supreme Court relies on sustained public confidence in its institutional credibility to give force to its decisions. Previous research shows that Supreme Court justices are increasingly making public appearances to engage in a course of institutional maintenance to preserve its legitimacy. Amid a potential legitimacy crisis, justices seek to shore up the Court’s public support in these public appearances by emphasizing the apolitical nature of the Court and its decision making. The question for a growing body of literature is whether these attempts at institutional maintenance do, in fact, lead to higher …

Department of Surgery Faculty Papers
Slipping rib syndrome (SRS) is a disorder that occurs when one or more of the eighth through tenth ribs become abnormally mobile. SRS is a poorly understood condition leading to a significant delay in diagnosis and therapeutic management. History and a physical exam are usually sufficient for a diagnosis of SRS. The utility of dynamic ultrasounds has also been studied as a useful diagnostic tool. Multiple surgical techniques for SRS have been described within the literature. Cartilage rib excision (CRE) has been the most common technique utilized. However, the literature has shown a high rate of recurrence and associated risks …
Racialized Masculinities In Professional Basketball: Utilizing Mixedness To Challenge Commonplace Black/White Media Discourses About Nba Players, Anthony C. Peavy
Racialized Masculinities In Professional Basketball: Utilizing Mixedness To Challenge Commonplace Black/White Media Discourses About Nba Players, Anthony C. Peavy
Communication ETDs
In this dissertation project, I utilize a Critical Mixed Race Studies (CMRS) lens to examine how mixed-race Black/White players in the National Basketball Association (NBA) are represented, discussed, racialized, and gendered by major sports media platforms. More specifically, I utilize this project to elucidate how media centered on professional basketball continue to partake in hegemonic and essentialist rhetoric surrounding Black and White masculinity—that which has been used to discuss Black and White men in basketball throughout the entire history of the sport—to homogenize mixed-race Black/White men in the NBA and present them in a way that diminishes the potentially deconstructive …
Plant Material Selection And Seed Enhancement Technologies Improve Seed-Based Restoration In Dryland Systems, Travis G. Sowards
Plant Material Selection And Seed Enhancement Technologies Improve Seed-Based Restoration In Dryland Systems, Travis G. Sowards
Theses and Dissertations
The restoration of large-scale heterogeneous landscapes is typically approached using seed-based restoration as a cost-effective means to achieve project goals and objectives. However, seeding is often met with low survival rates primarily driven by low seedling emergence and establishment. This dissertation investigates opportunities to enhance restoration focusing on 1) seed treatments, 2) plant materials, and 3) a synthesis of seeding strategies. • Fungal pathogenesis can cause high seedling mortality. Fungicide seed coatings used in the agriculture industry are novel to wildland restoration. We assess the effect a fungicide seed coating has on the recruitment of Pseudoroegneria spicata seedlings across a …
Effects Of Adaptive Learning Technologies On Mathematics Achievement In Low Ses Settings, William Roberts
Effects Of Adaptive Learning Technologies On Mathematics Achievement In Low Ses Settings, William Roberts
Doctor of Education in Secondary and Middle Grades Education Dissertations
Low socioeconomic status is linked to poor mathematical achievement (NCES, 2019 & Barr, 2015). Furthermore, students in rural settings exhibit mathematical incompetencies (Harmon & Wilborn, 2016). One possible remedy is adaptive learning technology (AT). These are computer programs that determine what a student already knows about mathematics (or other content areas) and then identify areas for growth to increase a student’s knowledge about a topic such as Geometry or Algebra 2. Although not necessarily taking a teacher’s place, an AT can aid the teacher by allowing multiple students to be in multiple different places all within the same classroom. This …

Digitization And Digital Preservation Of P.Herc. 817, Marissa Anne Bischoff
Theses and Dissertations
The large cache of scrolls from Herculaneum were opened to scholars in spite of and because of the destruction of the volcano and damaging unfurling techniques. The fragments inherited have been studied closely by scholars. Digitization and technological work on the Herculaneum papyri, including the important infrared imaging completed by BYU in the early 2000s, and the 3-D imaging and inchoate virtual unwrapping technology by EduceLab, have amplified and aided scholarship on the scrolls and will continue to do so. P.Herc. 817 is a unique Latin text within the collection that has been heavily studied by scholars due to its …
Is This My Thing, Or Your Thing?: Differentiation Of Self As A Moderator Between Pornography Use And Marital Outcomes, Naomi Mcallister Noorda
Is This My Thing, Or Your Thing?: Differentiation Of Self As A Moderator Between Pornography Use And Marital Outcomes, Naomi Mcallister Noorda
Theses and Dissertations
Pornography use is fairly common in today's society, which suggests that one or even both partners of many couple relationships may use pornography. Persons with high or low levels of differentiation of self may experience relationship attachment and sexual satisfaction differently depending on their partner's pornography use. On one hand, those with high differentiation may view a partner's pornography use as the partner's issue. On the other hand, those with low differentiation may view their partner's pornography use as something they are responsible for or need to change. Using data from 1,665 couples across the United States from Wave 6 …
Characterizing The Evaporating Droplets Over Heterogeneous Wettability Surfaces, Xi Li
Characterizing The Evaporating Droplets Over Heterogeneous Wettability Surfaces, Xi Li
Theses
This work investigates deposition patterns left by evaporating particle-laden droplets on heterogeneous surfaces with spatially varying wettability. Spatial differences in receding contact angles give rise to scalloped-shaped contact lines. During evaporation, the contact line recedes in one location and remains pinned in another. This non-uniform contact line recession results in particle self-assembly above areas where the contact line remains pinned, but not where it recedes. This behavior is fairly robust across a variety of particle sizes, concentrations, and device geometries. We hypothesize that particle self-assembly in these cases is due to the competition between particle diffusion and the evaporative-driven advective …

Resting-State Eeg Power Differences In Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Weisi Siong Neo, Dan Foti, Brandon Keehn, Bridgette Kelleher
Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund
Narrative reviews have described various resting-state EEG power differences in autism across all five canonical frequency bands, with increased power for low and high frequencies and reduced power for middle frequencies. However, these differences have yet to be quantified using effect sizes and probed robustly for consistency, which are critical next steps for clinical translation. Following PRISMA guidelines, we conducted a systematic review of published and gray literature on resting-state EEG power in autism. We performed 10 meta-analyses to synthesize and quantify differences in absolute and relative resting-state delta, theta, alpha, beta, and gamma EEG power in autism. We also …

Vapor-Phase Synthesis Of Electrocatalytic Covalent Organic Frameworks, Syed Ibrahim Gnani Peer Mohamed, Shahriar Namvar, Tan Zhang, Hessam Shahbazi, Zhen Jiang, Andrew M. Rappe, Amin Salehi-Khojin, Siamak Nejati
Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Faculty Publications
The inability to process many covalent organic frameworks (COFs) as thin films plagues their widespread utilization. Herein, a vapor-phase pathway for the bottom-up synthesis of a class of porphyrin-based COFs is presented. This approach allows integrating electrocatalysts made of metal-ion-containing COFs into the electrodes’ architectures in a single-step synthesis and deposition. By precisely controlling the metal sites at the atomic level, remarkable electrocatalytic performance is achieved, resulting in unprecedentedly high mass activity values. How the choice of metal atoms, i.e., cobalt and copper, can determine the catalytic activities of POR-COFs is demonstrated. The theoretical data proves that the Cu site …

Implementation Of Positive Behavior Interventions And Supports (Pbis) And Its Impact On Middle School Students’ Academic Success And Problem Behaviors, Brittanie Watson
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) has been implemented across the United States in the effort to help diminish problem behaviors and increase academic success. Schools across the country are reporting an increase in numbers and intensity of problem behaviors. In addition, academic success after the COVID-19 pandemic has decreased in some school districts across the United States. Therefore, districts are looking for an intervention to help increase academics and decrease problem behaviors. With school districts already implementing PBIS, research studies and analyses are needed to ensure that the outcomes expected of PBIS are occurring. In addition, with the little …

Navigating Repatriation: Factors Influencing Turnover Intentions Of Self-Initiated Repatriates In Emerging Economies, Nga T. T. Ho, Hung T. Hoang, Pi Shen Seet, Janice Jones
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Purpose: The repatriation process often involves challenging and unexpected readjustment issues, leading to high turnover amongst repatriates. However, research has focussed on the re-entry decisions and experiences of company-assigned (CA) repatriates, whilst studies on self-initiated expatriates (SIEs) that repatriate back to their home countries (i.e. self-initiated repatriates (SIRs)) are limited, particularly in emerging transition economies. This study develops and tests a model to explain the factors influencing professional SIRs' turnover intentions and how repatriation readjustment affects their intentions in Vietnam. Design/methodology/approach: The data was collected from 445 Vietnamese professional SIRs who worked and/or studied for extended periods overseas and subsequently …
Critical Online Library Instruction: Opportunities And Challenges, Tessa Withorn
Critical Online Library Instruction: Opportunities And Challenges, Tessa Withorn
Communications in Information Literacy
Although critical information literacy, critical pedagogy, and online library instruction are commonly discussed in the library and information science literature, they are rarely discussed together. This qualitative interview study with academic librarians conducted in 2022 identifies opportunities and challenges of teaching critical information literacy online. Findings suggest that critical information literacy and critical pedagogy can be integrated into online library instruction through online workshops, digital learning objects, and online credit-bearing courses. However, librarians face challenges implementing critical pedagogy online related to the lack of dialogue and co-creation of knowledge between students and instructors, limitations of the one-shot model of library …

Information Literacy In English-Language Higher Education Teaching Journals: A Review, Jennifer Masunaga, Lanyi Peng, Tiffanie Ford-Baxter, Kendall Faulkner
Communications in Information Literacy
Wider visibility of information literacy (IL) outside of the library and information science (LIS) field is important to the success of IL instruction, learning, and research. The development and major updates of several information literacy documents in the past decade evidence the changing landscape of IL research, but how these changes have impacted other disciplines remains to be seen. To aid in this discussion, this article examines a wide range of higher education teaching journals to expand on Badke's (2011) work, “Why Information Literacy is Invisible.” Specifically, this study examines articles published in 30 general higher education and 32 …

Truth Or Consequences: Academic Instruction Librarians As Information Literacy And Critical Thinking Activists, Laureen P. Cantwell-Jurkovic, Heather F. Ball
Communications in Information Literacy
The graphic edition of Snyder’s On Tyranny (2021) states "truth dies in four modes," which is a contemporary synthesis connected to Klemperer's Language of the Third Reich (1957). The researchers connected these four modes to information literacy (IL) instruction—but would others? The researchers surveyed academic librarians engaged in IL instruction on whether they felt they addressed any of the modes in their work. The researchers also asked whether they believe the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education works to circumvent any of the four modes. Nearly 150 librarians responded and, while most respondents were unfamiliar with the two …
Investigating Faculty Perceptions Of Information Literacy And Instructional Collaboration, Angie Cox, Amandajean Nolte, Angela L. Pratesi
Investigating Faculty Perceptions Of Information Literacy And Instructional Collaboration, Angie Cox, Amandajean Nolte, Angela L. Pratesi
Communications in Information Literacy
This exploratory mixed-methods study investigates faculty perceptions of information literacy (IL), its instruction, and librarian collaboration teaching IL since the adoption of the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education at the authors’ institution. Many previous studies examining these questions were completed when the ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education was the guiding document for the profession. Like earlier studies, findings from this study clearly demonstrate that faculty value IL and that collaborations occur in differing and inconsistent forms. However, at the authors’ institution, there is a misalignment between faculty and librarians in what IL is and …

Librarians within a newly combined, multi-campus research and instruction department undertook a large-scale peer review of their online instruction program and materials. This collaborative assessment project sought to unite three library departments with a cohesive vision for self-guided online library instruction while establishing consistent quality standards and building a shared sense of ownership and accomplishment. These goals were achieved through a collaborative assessment of online instructional modules that included the development of a novel rubric based on the Quality Matters Course Design Standards. This article reports on that ongoing journey, as well as the goals, challenges, and outcomes of the …
Working Conditions Are Learning Conditions: Understanding Information Literacy Instruction Through Neoliberal Capitalism, Romel Espinel, Eamon Tewell
Working Conditions Are Learning Conditions: Understanding Information Literacy Instruction Through Neoliberal Capitalism, Romel Espinel, Eamon Tewell
Communications in Information Literacy
Neoliberal capitalism’s demands for efficiency and innovation have greatly impacted North American academic libraries and the work conducted in them, including information literacy instruction. The divisive forces of neoliberalism must be met with resistance, and libraries hold the potential for generating an information literacy praxis where learners engage information with a critical consciousness instead of a consumerist one. Using library labor conditions and the contradictions between innovation and student learning as focal points, we argue that academic library workers should seek to center attention to inequities and injustices in the information economy and scholarly information systems in their instruction, identify …

Catastrophic natural disasters have an impact on millions of individuals each year, whether directly or indirectly. A successful rescue operation can save a great deal of lives in the post-disaster phase, but researchers are still facing difficulties in carrying this out. Even while they are in peril, today's people frequently post updates about their whereabouts on well-known social media platforms, sometimes even asking for help. A prompt and appropriate response to these catastrophic events depends on developing an efficient and automated approach capable of retrieving real-time data from impacted locations and extracting essential elements. The research focuses on predicting flood …

Many adolescent students have been shown to fall behind gradually as they reach
secondary grade levels. This has been researched as the effect of socioeconomic factors,
lack of immersive vocabulary backgrounds, and gaps in elementary years. Extensive
research has shown the benefits of morphology instruction in secondary students in
bridging vocabulary gaps, yet many schools have yet to provide them with the support to
comprehend difficult texts across content areas. This project explores the possible benefits
of offering adolescents the extra support and resources that can leverage reading
comprehension across content areas within secondary education. Through the use of
implementing …
