Constitutive Rhetoric And Partisan Polarization In The 2016 Presidential Primary Debates, Joel Reed, Mitchell S. Mckinney
Constitutive Rhetoric And Partisan Polarization In The 2016 Presidential Primary Debates, Joel Reed, Mitchell S. Mckinney
Speaker & Gavel
For decades political scientists and communication scholars have grappled with the connection between political primaries and rising polarization. Despite significant scholarly attention to the connection between primaries and polarization, little attention has been afforded to the rhetoric of polarization in primary campaigns. Through the lens of constitutive rhetoric, we investigate the intersection of primary campaigns and polarization from a rhetorical perspective. We analyze the rhetoric of the 2016 presidential primary debates to understand how candidates drew on traditional and innovative strategies of rhetorical polarization in constituting party identity. We find that establishment candidates depended on in-group affirmation and out-group subversion …
Power Grid Politics: Winter Storm Uri And Texas Governor Greg Abbott's Image Repair Discourse, Matthew Gerber, Breann Bates, Chloe Caballero, Adán De La Garza, Erica Kolson
Power Grid Politics: Winter Storm Uri And Texas Governor Greg Abbott's Image Repair Discourse, Matthew Gerber, Breann Bates, Chloe Caballero, Adán De La Garza, Erica Kolson
Speaker & Gavel
Winter storm Uri hit the state of Texas on February 14, 2021. Bringing record amounts of snow, ice, and prolonged sub-zero temperatures, the storm caused widespread power outages which led to hundreds of deaths, and created a complex rhetorical situation for Governor Greg Abbott. This article examines the image repair discourse engaged in by Abbott, and ultimately concludes that his use of blame-shifting, corrective action, and defeasibility strategies were ultimately effective, but to varying degrees based on each respective strategy. We argue herein that Abbott’s strategy of shifting the blame for the debacle to ERCOT was his most effective tactic, …
At The Intersection Of Ableism Entelechy, And Policy Debate, Alex Mcvey, Matthew Gerber
At The Intersection Of Ableism Entelechy, And Policy Debate, Alex Mcvey, Matthew Gerber
Speaker & Gavel
This article investigates the causes of ableism and inaccessibility in policy debate, and also envisions alternatives to the current conception of debate that could open doors to more participants at all levels of ability. We argue that the rhetorical theories of Kenneth Burke help to illuminate symbolic practices in debate which function to exclude disabled voices. We also forward the argument that the competitive nature of policy debate, along with its dominant discursive practices and speech codes, constitutes an example of what Kenneth Burke calls ‘entelechy’. We further argue that the entelechial nature of policy debate is at the root …
Mentorship As An Evolving Practice: Emma And Justin's Excellent Adventure, Justin G. Foote, Emma Murdock
Mentorship As An Evolving Practice: Emma And Justin's Excellent Adventure, Justin G. Foote, Emma Murdock
Speaker & Gavel
This paper provides a semi-autoethnographic exploration of the evolving practice of mentorship within forensic debate. Ultimately, this paper is situated within previous literature, such as Buell's (2004) understanding of mentorship models, but expands on the need for an evolving mentorship model within student-professor mentorship, especially as the student role changes from undergraduate student to graduate student. The researchers' arguments in this paper are around how mentorship in student-professor relationships needs to adapt as the student's role changes from novice to experienced competitor and eventually from student to coach. The goal of the mentor-mentee relationship is long-term success for both parties …

Echoes Of The Spanish Civil War In Tolkien’S Legendarium, Alexander Retakh
Echoes Of The Spanish Civil War In Tolkien’S Legendarium, Alexander Retakh
Journal of Tolkien Research
The Spanish Civil War had a profound effect on the literature of the 1930s and 40s; however, it has been almost neglected in Tolkien studies. This article examines both Tolkien's potential views of the Civil War and their effect on his writings of the late 1930s such as the emerging story of Numenor. The dearth of primary sources can be rectified by studying the position on the War taken by other British Catholic intellectuals. Very likely Tolkien viewed the Civil War primarily as a religious conflict and was shaken by the highly publicized cases of anti-clerical violence. The combination of …

Forecasting Of Seasonal And Cyclical Variations Of Fish Catch From Egyptian Mediterranean Fisheries, Zainab M. Abd El–Khalek, Nabil E. Hassan, Ola M. El – Sonbaty, Shaimaa M. Haggag, Rania I. Younis, Mohamed Toubar
Blue Economy
The fishing sector of Egypt in the Mediterranean Sea is characterized by an extensive economic resources. however magnitude of catch and the productivity of its resources is low and of decreasing trend over time, expressed in Catch Per Unit Effort (CPUE).
The Time Series package used to analyze secular trend, cyclic, seasonal changes and forecasting future trends. Bio/economic models (Schaefer, 1954 & Fox, 1970) are analyzed. To estimate maximum effort (Fmax) and maximum yield (Ymax) to maintain fish stocks biological, social and economic sustainability. Primary data about catch and efforts is scarce and un-detailed in aggregated form especially gear – …

Service Id Management System And Method Thereof, Sahil Arora
Defensive Publications Series
The method (300) outlines a systematic approach for the efficient deployment and management of a Hadoop environment. The method emphasizes the use of a script to generate unique Service IDs, incorporating a buffer to preemptively generate IDs and mitigate the risk of system downtime during high demand. The integration of Service IDs with the Name Node avoids locking or blocking essential Hadoop operations and implementing batch processes strategically. Continuous monitoring of both the Service ID and the Hadoop cluster is done for immediate alerts related to discrepancies, failures, or performance issues. Version management is underscored to ensure atomic changes and …

COMMUNITY AND CULTURAL-CENTERED MUSIC THERAPY WITH THE BOYS & GIRLS CLUB: A QUALITATIVE CASE STUDY
Abstract
Music therapy with The Boys & Girls Club of a rural area of middle Georgia would create a positive outlet for the youth to delve into an experience that would create worthwhile opportunities for them outside of their everyday routine, while implementing coping mechanisms, self-actualizing habits, and social benefits. With the implementation of music therapy used in The Boys & Girls Club of The Big Bend, this population would be exposed to not only a therapy that they are not accustomed to, but they …
A Randomised Non-Descent Method For Global Optimisation, Dmitry A. Pasechnyuk, Alexander Gornov
A Randomised Non-Descent Method For Global Optimisation, Dmitry A. Pasechnyuk, Alexander Gornov
Machine Learning Faculty Publications
This paper proposes novel algorithm for non-convex multimodal constrained optimisation problems. It is based on sequential solving restrictions of problem to sections of feasible set by random subspaces (in general, manifolds) of low dimensionality. This approach varies in a way to draw subspaces, dimensionality of subspaces, and method to solve restricted problems. We provide empirical study of algorithm on convex, unimodal and multimodal optimisation problems and compare it with efficient algorithms intended for each class of problems.

Exploring The Microbial Diversity And Characterization Of Cellulase And Hemicellulase Genes In Goat Rumen: A Metagenomic Approach, Santosh Thapa, Suping Zhou, Joshua O’Hair, Kamal Al Nasr, Alexander Ropelewski, Hui Li
Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research
Background
Goat rumen microbial communities are perceived as one of the most potential biochemical reservoirs of multi-functional enzymes, which are applicable to enhance wide array of bioprocesses such as the hydrolysis of cellulose and hemi-cellulose into fermentable sugar for biofuel and other value-added biochemical production. Even though, the limited understanding of rumen microbial genetic diversity and the absence of effective screening culture methods have impeded the full utilization of these potential enzymes. In this study, we applied culture independent metagenomics sequencing approach to isolate, and identify microbial communities in goat rumen, meanwhile, clone and functionally characterize novel cellulase and xylanase …

Supervaluation Of Pregnant Women Is Reductive Of Women, Jennifer Parks, Timothy F. Murphy
Supervaluation Of Pregnant Women Is Reductive Of Women, Jennifer Parks, Timothy F. Murphy
Philosophy: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Heloise Robinson argues that by certain threshold criteria pregnant women qualify for a higher moral status by reason of their pregnancies. While her intention is to make this a status upgrade for women we worry that it may result in a status downgrade for women as a class, by presupposing and reinforcing women’s value in relation to their reproductive labor. Historically central to feminist analysis is resistance to reductive accounts of women in relation to their reproductivity. For example, Simone de Beauvoir addressed men’s transcendence and contrasted it with women’s immanence, a status distinction possible because women are mired in …
