Improved Eye Tracking With Hardware-Generated Multi-Polarized Images, Jamyuen Ko, Gordon Wan
Defensive Publications Series
Eye tracking is performed in augmented reality, virtual reality, or extended reality (AR/VR/XR) applications to determine the gaze direction of the user. However, eye tracking based on a captured image of the eye can be inaccurate when the image contains saturated pixels due to high reflection from the user’s eye. This disclosure describes techniques to generate multi-polarized images (images with different polarization angles) simultaneously. A metalens is provided in the imaging apparatus to generate multiple images with different polarization. The images are partitioned on the same sensor. The image that is relatively free of saturation can be used to perform …

Improving Intimate Partner Violence Screening In A Women’S Health Practice Through Implementation Of An Evidence-Based Screening Tool, Jasmine Weber
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects: College of Nursing
The purpose of this quality improvement project was to implement intimate partner violence screening in an outpatient women’s health clinic with no prior screening process in place. Current recommendations are to screen all reproductive age women for intimate partner violence 6 . During a three-month period 170 patients out of 260 eligible patients were screened using the HARK screening tool, 7 of those patients screened positive and were offered referrals to social work. While universal IPV screening was not achieved, a screening rate of 64% is a remarkable improvement from an apparent absence of screening prior to project implementation.

The enhancement of historical document images is critical for improving the quality and legibility of scanned or captured document images. Convolutional-based techniques previously generated competitive results for document image binarization, however, due to their inherent locality, these models are often limited in explicitly expressing long-range dependency. Transformers (ViT) have evolved as an alternative design with a global self-attention mechanism to tackle this issue, however, they can result in restricted localization capabilities due to a lack of low-level details. To address this problem, we propose TransDocUNet, a CNN-Transformer hybrid UNet architecture for document image binarization that merits both attention and convolution …

Abstract
Background: Healthcare personnel (HCP) are at high risk of stress, burnout, and compassion fatigue (CF). Up to 50% of physicians and 33% of nurses experience burnout in the United States. Higher rates of burnout were noted during the recent SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic due to the increased need for mental health services among patients and HCP.
Problem: Stress, burnout, and CF are associated with increased medical errors, poor patient safety, and higher staff turnover rates. One-third of nurses report they intend to leave the profession because of burnout which contributes to financial burden for hospitals. A higher nurse turnover rate …

Perhaps Russia’s most notorious disinformation campaign to date was Operation INFEKTION, an activemeasures campaign designed to persuade the world that the United States was responsible for the creation of the AIDS virus (Boghardt, 2009; Selvage & Nehring, 2019). The effort, perhaps more properly referred to by its Russian codename, Operation Denver, began in 1983 with the planting of a fictious letter to the editor in The Patriot, an Indian newspaper created some years earlier by the KGB for the purposes of spreading pro-Soviet propaganda. The letter, entitled “AIDS may Invade India,” was purported to be written by a respected American …

Heparin Induced Thrombocytopenia (Hit), Tanya Yatskiv, Lauren Myers, Erica Barber, Kristy Asbell
Doctor of Medical Science (DMSc)
Introduction:
Heparin was first discovered in 1915 and is still widely used to this day.1 In 1958 however, it was noted that a small percentage of recipients of heparin develop antibodies to the drug which cause a mild to moderate thrombocytopenia and can progress the patient into a severe prothrombotic state.2 The prothrombotic state can be detrimental due to venous and arterial thromboembolisms that lead to life and limb-threatening manifestations. The mechanism of the thrombocytopenia and immune reaction was not identified until 1973.2 The adverse drug effect is induced by platelet-activating antibodies against platelet factor 4 (PF4) and heparin.3 These …

UNLABELLED: Current treatment approaches for renal cell carcinoma (RCC) face challenges in achieving durable tumor responses due to tumor heterogeneity and drug resistance. Combination therapies that leverage tumor molecular profiles could offer an avenue for enhancing treatment efficacy and addressing the limitations of current therapies. To identify effective strategies for treating RCC, we selected ten drugs guided by tumor biology to test in six RCC patient-derived xenograft (PDX) models. The multitargeted tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) cabozantinib and mTORC1/2 inhibitor sapanisertib emerged as the most effective drugs, particularly when combined. The combination demonstrated favorable tolerability and inhibited tumor growth or induced …
