Every generation has a different way of engaging in congregational worship, sometimes at odds with another generation. The current challenge for pastors and worship leaders of churches with multiple generations is planning worship services that consider the congregation's complex make-up and remain faithful to the principles of biblical worship. The purpose of this qualitative research project is to provide a worship model that facilitates the worship styles and preferences of multiple generations within a church congregation. An atmosphere of worship is desired for all persons attending weekly worship services whose hearts and minds are receptive to the move of God …

How Successful Middle School Band Directors Display Supplemental Illustrations, Instructions, And Reference Material In Their Classrooms, Christopher Ryan Kristich Dec 2023

How Successful Middle School Band Directors Display Supplemental Illustrations, Instructions, And Reference Material In Their Classrooms, Christopher Ryan Kristich

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Although presenting visual information is commonplace in a learning environment, many music educators could do this more effectively. This grounded theory project aimed to determine how successful middle school band directors display supplemental illustrations, instructions, and reference material in their classrooms. School administrators often require teachers to exhibit material related to the curriculum. Music educators are typically permitted autonomy with their wall displays if they maintain the educational parameters. Despite the potential benefits of displaying quality visual information, not all middle school band directors ensure that the auxiliary material presented in their room is relevant and constructive. Available resources that …

Correlation Between Purposeful Patient Medication Education And Patient Experience Scores, Paula Shredl

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) is a national grading system that is used by payors to determine patients’ perception of their hospital stay. This public benchmarking system is tied to reimbursements and encompasses several domain areas. The medication and nursing domain questions revolve around how the nursing staff explained the purpose and possible side effects of patient medication. This project targeted a medical-surgical unit in a suburban faith-based hospital that was not meeting the national benchmarks in the nursing domain. The purpose of this evidence-based practice project, which was conducted using the Iowa Model of …

A Quantitative Study On The Impact Of Covid-19 On Drug Treatment Courts, Derek J. Kingsbury Dec 2023

A Quantitative Study On The Impact Of Covid-19 On Drug Treatment Courts, Derek J. Kingsbury

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this research study was to investigate how the COVID-19 pandemic impacted drug treatment courts (DTCs) in Pennsylvania. DTCs were created as an alternative to the traditional court system by allowing those convicted of a drug offense to receive treatment. Just as these DTCs were dealing with the opioid crisis, a new obstacle occurred in the form of the COVID-19 pandemic, forcing DTCs to adapt to the quickly evolving and changing mandates and policies implemented by the federal and local governments. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on these essential DTCs was examined using a therapeutic jurisprudence perspective. …

Intimate Partner Violence And Spirituality: A Healing Process, Sheila Diane Lundquist Dec 2023

Intimate Partner Violence And Spirituality: A Healing Process, Sheila Diane Lundquist

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study is to understand how intimate partner violence (IPV) survivors, from the Atlanta area, use spirituality to heal from the abuse. The theory guiding this study is Maslow’s (1954) Hierarchy of Needs as it shows how spirituality helped these women meet the needs on the hierarchy after having many of the needs ripped from them by the perpetrator(s). Intimate partner violence is a fundamental problem in the United States, especially during these times of COVID-19 and the stay-at home orders. Intimate partner violence takes a toll on the family unit, the community, and the …

Forgiveness In Education: A Qualitative Analysis Of The Forgiveness Experience For Educators, Corinne D. Denhartog Dec 2023

Forgiveness In Education: A Qualitative Analysis Of The Forgiveness Experience For Educators, Corinne D. Denhartog

The purpose of this integrative review is to evaluate if mindfulness is effective in decreasing nursing burnout. Nursing burnout has negatively affected the nursing profession for many years, and since the COVID-19 pandemic, it appears to be worse. Mindfulness is a practice that has been used for decades, however, it is gaining more attention in the nursing realm. Mindfulness consists of being present in a moment without judgment. It can consist of individual exercises that are completed using an instructor in person, in an application on a smartphone or computer, or yoga-based mindful activities. A preliminary literature review was completed …

Toward An Analysis Of The Abductive Moral Argument For God’S Existence: Assessing The Evidential Quality Of Moral Phenomena And The Evidential Virtuosity Of Christian Theological Models, David Ochabski Dec 2023

Toward An Analysis Of The Abductive Moral Argument For God’S Existence: Assessing The Evidential Quality Of Moral Phenomena And The Evidential Virtuosity Of Christian Theological Models, David Ochabski

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The moral argument for God’s existence is perhaps the oldest and most salient of the arguments from natural theology. In contemporary literature, there has been a focus on the abductive version of the moral argument. Although the mode of reasoning, abduction, has been articulated, there has not been a robust articulation of the individual components of the argument. Such an articulation would include the data quality of moral phenomena, the theoretical virtuosity of theological models that explain the moral phenomena, and how both contribute to the likelihood of moral arguments. The goal of this paper is to provide such an …

Modeling Of Functional Gene Regulation Through Machine Learning And Deep Learning Methods, Yuhao Chen Dec 2023

Modeling Of Functional Gene Regulation Through Machine Learning And Deep Learning Methods, Yuhao Chen

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Genes are specific sequences of nucleotides within the genome that undergo transcription to generate products that can diffuse throughout the cell. These gene products can take the form of either proteins or RNAs and play crucial roles in virtually all cellular functions, encompassing structural support, enzymatic activities, and signaling functions. An essential focus of contemporary biological research revolves around unraveling the functions of genes and their resulting products across different organisms. One primary means to conduct this research is through the regulation of gene expression. MicroRNAs (miRNAs), short single-stranded non-coding RNAs, play vital roles in gene expression regulation. Both computational …

A Quantitative Analysis Of Preschoolers’ English Consonant Spellings: Teasing Apart The Influences Of Frequencies, Phonetics, And Children’S Own Names, Jayde Elizabeth Homer Dec 2023

A Quantitative Analysis Of Preschoolers’ English Consonant Spellings: Teasing Apart The Influences Of Frequencies, Phonetics, And Children’S Own Names, Jayde Elizabeth Homer

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Before children are formally taught how to use letters to symbolize speech sounds, they know quite a bit about both. In three studies, I explored competing predictors of the quality of preschoolers’ spellings of the first phoneme of words—the first phoneme of a word being the most likely phoneme that a 3-, 4-, or 5-year-old attempts to spell. Frequency-based predictors included how common a word is or how often caregivers talk about certain letters. Phonetic-based predictors included segmenting the phonemes within a consonant cluster, how long a word is, the extent to which a letter name gives clues to the …

Following The Paper Trail: An Ethnoecology Of Hand Papermaking Traditions, James Ojascastro Dec 2023

Following The Paper Trail: An Ethnoecology Of Hand Papermaking Traditions, James Ojascastro

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Plants and their fibers have served as simple yet incredibly versatile raw materials for innovation for as long as humans have been on the planet. As the principal structural building blocks of plant cell walls, these hollow, cellulosic fibers have been co-opted by cultures around the world to meet diverse structural, absorptive, motile, and thermoregulatory needs—especially as textiles and paper. Despite (or because of!) this versatility, fibers vary considerably in physiology, and ethnographic records show that very few plant species have been chosen by tradition for use in fiber products. Surprisingly, no fiber ethnobotany study to date has attempted to …

Landau-Khalatnikov-Fradkin Gauge Transformations For The Propagator And Vertex In Qed And Qed2, James Edwards Dec 2023

Landau-Khalatnikov-Fradkin Gauge Transformations For The Propagator And Vertex In Qed And Qed2, James Edwards

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

The non-perturbative Landau-Khalatnikov-Fradkin (LKF) transformations describe how Green functions in quantum field theory transform under a change in the photon field's linear covariant gauge parameter (denoted ξ). The transformations are framed most simply in coordinate space where they are multiplicative. They imply that information on gauge-dependent contributions from higher order diagrams in the perturbative series is contained in lower order contributions, which is useful in multi-loop calculations. We study the LKF transformations for the propagator and the vertex in both scalar and spinor QED, in some particular dimensions. A novelty of our work is to derive momentum-space integral representations of …

Multiple cancers exhibit aberrant protein arginine methylation by both type I arginine methyltransferases, predominately protein arginine methyltransferase 1 (PRMT1) and to a lesser extent PRMT4, and by type II PRMTs, predominately PRMT5. Here, we perform targeted proteomics following inhibition of PRMT1, PRMT4, and PRMT5 across 12 cancer cell lines. We find that inhibition of type I and II PRMTs suppresses phosphorylated and total ATR in cancer cells. Loss of ATR from PRMT inhibition results in defective DNA replication stress response activation, including from PARP inhibitors. Inhibition of type I and II PRMTs is synergistic with PARP inhibition regardless of homologous …

In this issue of the Journal of Bacteriology, N. J. Bonde, E. A. Wood, K. S. Myers, M. Place, J. L. Keck, and M. M. Cox (J Bacteriol 205:e00184-23, 2023, https://doi.org/10.1128/jb.00184-23) used an unbiased transposon-sequencing (Tn-seq) screen to identify proteins required for life when cells lose the RecG branched-DNA helicase (synthetic lethality). The proteins’ identities indicate pathways that prevent endogenous DNA damage, pathways that prevent its homology-directed repair (HDR) “strand-exchange” intermediates between sister chromosomes, and pathways that resolve those intermediates. All avoid intermediate pile-up, which blocks chromosome segregation, causing “death-by-recombination.” DNA damage is managed to regulate crucial but …

The prognosis of childhood medulloblastoma (MB) is often poor, and it usually requires aggressive therapy that adversely affects quality of life. microRNA-211 (miR-211) was previously identified as an important regulator of cells that descend from neural cells. Since medulloblastomas primarily affect cells with similar ontogeny, we investigated the role and mechanism of miR-211 in MB. Here we showed that miR-211 expression was highly downregulated in cell lines, PDXs, and clinical samples of different MB subgroups (SHH, Group 3, and Group 4) compared to normal cerebellum. miR-211 gene was ectopically expressed in transgenic cells from MB subgroups, and they were subjected …

Gastroenteritis is among the leading causes of mortality globally in infants and young children, with rotavirus (RV) causing ~258 million episodes of diarrhea and ~128,000 deaths annually in infants and children. RV-induced mechanisms that result in diarrhea are not completely understood, but malabsorption is a contributing factor. RV alters cellular lipid metabolism by inducing lipid droplet (LD) formation as a platform for replication factories named viroplasms. A link between LD formation and gastroenteritis has not been identified. We found that diacylglycerol O-acyltransferase 1 (DGAT1), the terminal step in triacylglycerol synthesis required for LD biogenesis, is degraded in RV-infected cells by …

“I Remember Feeling Pretty Darn Lucky”: Crafting Family Resilience In Response To A Medical Emergency, Sophie Downing Dec 2023

“I Remember Feeling Pretty Darn Lucky”: Crafting Family Resilience In Response To A Medical Emergency, Sophie Downing

Communication: Faculty Scholarship

Through a combination of autoethnographic reflections and oral history interviews with my parents, I explore the ways in which we enacted resilience throughout my father’s unexpected hospitalization, rehabilitation, and his subsequent years of recovery, both individually and communally. Using communication theory of resilience (CTR) as a framework, I identify the ways in which we engaged in the five processes outlined by Buzzanell (2010): crafting normalcy, emphasizing action while backgrounding negative feelings, affirming identity anchors, relying on communication networks, and employing alternative logics. I then propose three additional processes of enacting resilience that emerged from my family’s insights: enacting performative resilience, …

Most neutralizing anti-SARS-CoV-2 monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) target the receptor binding domain (RBD) of the spike (S) protein. Here, we characterize a panel of mAbs targeting the N-terminal domain (NTD) or other non-RBD epitopes of S. A subset of NTD mAbs inhibits SARS-CoV-2 entry at a post-attachment step and avidly binds the surface of infected cells. One neutralizing NTD mAb, SARS2-57, protects K18-hACE2 mice against SARS-CoV-2 infection in an Fc-dependent manner. Structural analysis demonstrates that SARS2-57 engages an antigenic supersite that is remodeled by deletions common to emerging variants. In neutralization escape studies with SARS2-57, this NTD site accumulates mutations, including …

BACKGROUND: "Brain-predicted age" estimates biological age from complex, nonlinear features in neuroimaging scans. The brain age gap (BAG) between predicted and chronological age is elevated in sporadic Alzheimer disease (AD), but is underexplored in autosomal dominant AD (ADAD), in which AD progression is highly predictable with minimal confounding age-related co-pathology.

METHODS: We modeled BAG in 257 deeply-phenotyped ADAD mutation-carriers and 179 non-carriers from the Dominantly Inherited Alzheimer Network using minimally-processed structural MRI scans. We then tested whether BAG differed as a function of mutation and cognitive status, or estimated years until symptom onset, and whether it was associated with established …

Monte Carlo Generation Of Localized Particle Trajectories, Ivan Ahumada, James P. Edwards Dec 2023

Monte Carlo Generation Of Localized Particle Trajectories, Ivan Ahumada, James P. Edwards

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

We introduce modifications to Monte Carlo simulations of the Feynman path integral that improve sampling of localized interactions. The algorithms generate trajectories in simple background potentials designed to concentrate them around the interaction region, reminiscent of importance sampling. This improves statistical sampling of the system and overcomes a long-time undersampling problem caused by the spatial diffusion inherent in Brownian motion. We prove the validity of our approach using previous analytic work on the distribution of values of the Wilson line over path integral trajectories and illustrate the improvements on some simple quantum mechanical systems.

Device Name Personalization Using Generative Artificial Intelligence, Mike Digman

Defensive Publications Series

When multiple devices within a household or other location have same or similar names, it can be difficult for users to identify devices uniquely, e.g., for transferring files, or other device-to-device actions. Further, while users can include their name in the device name, some users may prefer to not disclose their names or may have multiple devices where such naming does not address the device identification problem. This disclosure describes the use of a large language model (LLM) or other type of generative artificial intelligence (gen AI) to automatically generate device names. The user of a device can provide input, …
