A low-cost, small-scale pyrolysis kiln comprised of a cylindrical tank, gas circulating pipes, a kiln stand, and a manual drum lever was constructed and used to produce biochar from coconut shells in this study. The air intake and holding times for the biochar production process were varied. The biochar yield was 30.67% to 36.22%, or 4.6 kg to 5.4 kg per day per unit. The biochar porosity and fixed carbon content increased as the air intake and holding times were increased. …

Iron oxide scale generally forms on low-carbon steel surfaces during the hot rolling processes and produces as solid waste more than 100 thousand tons per year. The utilization of the iron oxide scale is one possible way to reduce the production cost for steel plants and promote environmental protection. Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrol-Copolymer (ABS) is widely used as engineering plastic for automotive parts because of its high strength and wear resistance. The recycling of iron oxide waste as reinforcement particles for enhancing the tensile strength of ABS composite was studied. The iron oxides were recycled by carbon powder at a high temperature between …

The thickness loss due to corrosion was inspected with eddy current testing (ET) and compared with the measurement from the coordinate measurement machine (CMM). The results showed that the thickness …

Fabrication And Characterizations Of High Density Si3 N4 - Zro2 Ceramics, Kamol Traipanya, Thanakorn Wasanapiarnpong, Charusporn Mongkolkachit

Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals

Silicon nitride and zirconia were mixed with SiO2, MgO, Y2O3 as sintering additives and pressureless sintered at 1650℃ in N2 atmosphere for 2 h. The XRD results showed a-Si3N4 was partially transformed to b-Si3N4 with 3:3:5 weight ratio of SiO2 : MgO : Y2O3. However, at 5 wt% of ZrO2 addition promoted phase transformation of a-Si3N4 to b-Si3N4 while 35 wt% of ZrO2 completely transformed to b-Si3N4 phase. Si3N4 has a lower density than ZrO2, bulk density of samples increases in correlation with the amount of ZrO2. Because there was no difference in hardness and flexural strength between sintered Si3N4 …

Enhancing The Color Shade And Depth Of Linen Fabrics Dyed With Caesalpinia Sappan L. Wood Extract Using Metallic Salt Mordants, Thanika Hutakamol, Penwisa Pisitsak, Sarida Thongmee, Sinuntorn Srijanand, Thankamol Somrus

Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals

This study demonstrated natural dyeing of linen with a dye extracted from sappan wood (Caesalpinia sappan L.). Four metallic salt mordants, namely (NH4)2Fe(SO4)2, CuSO4, SnCl2, and AlK(SO4)2, referred to as Fe, Cu, Sn, and Al, respectively, were used to improve the dyeing properties. The influences of the pH, dye concentration, mordant type and concentration, and mordanting technique on the dyeing properties were investigated. Dyeing without mordants resulted in a reddish-brown fabric; however, different mordants produced a variety of color shades. In general, the mordant containing Fe yielded the highest color strength, generating a dark gray color very close to black. …

Synthesis Of Sic Nanowires On Biochar Surfaces By A Simple Direct Method, Wasana Khongwong, Chumphol Busabok, Piyalak Ngernchuklin

Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals

Demand for air filters is crucially required due to PM 2.5. So, SiC nanowire networks are directly grown on biochar surfaces that serve strength and filtering purposes. The nanowires were prepared by spraying silicon powder on Lesser bulrush and Grey sedge biochars which acted as carbon sources and heating up to 1300℃ to 1500℃ for 1 h in Ar atmosphere. As a result, silicon powder evaporated and diffused on biochar surfaces. Meanwhile, CO vapor was generated from biochar reacted with O2 in the chamber. The evaporated silicon reacted with both C(s) and CO(g) to form cubic SiC nanowires. At the …

Quantum-Based First-Principles Study Of Gas Molecules (O2 , Co2 , No2 ) Interaction On Monolayer Germanene, Arief Hermanto, Harmon Prayogi, Ari Dwi Nugraheni, Juliasih Partini, Sholihun Sholihun

Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals

We perform calculations of the adsorption energy of O2, CO2, and NO2 molecules on germanene by using the density functional theory (DFT). We find two favorable configurations for O2, the U-site and V-site configurations with similar adsorption energies of -4.10 and -4.32 eV. As for NO2, we find two favorable configurations, the T-site and DB-site configurations. The T-site configuration is 0.98 eV more stable than the IB-site one, and both configurations are chemically adsorbed by germanene. On the contrary for CO2, we find a T-site configuration with adsorption energy of 0.42 eV and the configuration physically adsorbed by germanene.

Effect Of Calcination Frequency On The Thermoelectric Properties Of Ti Doped Cucro By Solid State Method, Doli Bonardo, Nono Darsono, Syahrul Humaidi, Agung Imaduddin, Noni Surtiana Silalahi

Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals

In this study, the influence of titanium oxide (TiO2) dopants and varying calcination processes on the thermoelectric properties of CuCrO2 was systematically explored. It was emphasized that these factors were not only affecting dislocation density but also exerting a profound influence on thermoelectric performance through the modulation of Seebeck coefficient and resistivity. The findings highlighted CrT-2, which incorporated TiO2 and underwent a two-time calcination process, as the top-performing sample in terms of power factor values, underscoring the significance of TiO2 as a dopant for enhancing thermoelectric efficiency. Conversely, Cr-4, exposed to four calcination cycles, exhibited slightly lower power factor values …

Molybdenum Disulfide-Zirconium Dioxide Composite With Enhance Supercapacitance Performance, Razan Nadhim Shaker, Sami Mohammed, Yousra Ali Abdulsayed

Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals

As a supercapacitor active material, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) layer offers good conductivity, large surface area, and electrochemical stability. In practice, however, its capacitance is low in comparison to other materials. This work synthesized MoS2-zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) composite in a simple, high-throughput way to test it as a supercapacitor active layer. During the tests, the composite shows a gravimetric capacitance of 500.0 F⸳g-1, while MoS2 and ZrO2 have capacitances of 265.12 and 152.43, respectively. The increase in capacitance of composite stems from the synergistic effect between ZrO2's pseudocapacitor behavior and MoS2's electric double layer capacitance (EDLC). Moreover, the composite has a …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Abiotic and biotic factors influence seagrass resilience, but the strength and relative importance of the effects are rarely assessed over the complete lifecycle. This study examined the effects of abiotic (salinity, temperature, water depth) and biotic (grazing by black swans) factors on Ruppia spp. over the complete lifecycle. Structures were set up in two estuaries ( – 33.637020, 115.412608) that prevented and allowed natural swan grazing of the seagrasses in May 2019, before the start of the growing season. The density of life stage(s) was measured from June 2019 when germination commenced through to January 2020 when most of the …
