One of the most frequent problems in biocomposites is the physical/chemical incompatibility between natural lignocellulosic fibers (NLF) and the matrix. Physical and/or chemical treatments are the most common approach to improve interface properties. Seeking for environmentally friendly treatments, lignosulfonates (LSs) have been considered for surface modification of NLF due to their amphiphilic properties. Thus, the objective of the present work is to evaluate the influence of sodium LS (SLS) treatment protocols in the properties and mechanical behavior of fique (Furcraea Andina) fibers. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetric (TGA) and spectroscopic (FTIR) analyzes were performed, as well as optical microscopy, …

Many problems such as the increase in the world population, global drought, and greenhouse gases have caused materials used in industries to be reconsidered. This is how the concept of green composite material emerged. Using natural fibers to obtain such materials is important in terms of sustainability. This study is aimed to use hemp fiber and banana fiber as natural fiber additives in the gypsum composite to produce green bio-composite. Natural fibers are chemically modified with 5% NaOH solution. In this way, a good fiber/matrix interface interaction is provided. The composite hardness test result of 5 wt% HB fiber added …

This article addresses applying a tensile test with a CCD camera to assess scale adhesion on hot-rolled steel as a function of hot-rolled coil position. The scale adhesion in this study was shown in the value of the strain initiating the first scale spallation. The result of strain initiating the first scale spallation was confirmed with an acoustic emission (AE) method. The as-received hot-rolled coil was studied at the head, middle, and tail positions. A scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to examine the scale morphology and phase identification respectively. The results show that the oxide …

Cadmium oxide doped zinc oxide nanoparticles were synthesized by solution combustion technique. CdO-ZnO nanoparticles were reinforced into epoxy by ultrasonication technique. CdO-ZnO nano-particles are well known semiconducting materials which are found to exhibit excellent semiconducting behavior even at high frequencies. Hence it was introduced into epoxy to study the semiconducting nature of CdO-ZnO/epoxy composites. The polymer composites exhibited interesting phenomenon such as minimum heat losses at high frequencies indicating semi-conducting behaviour of the composites. The polymer composite was also analysed for its structural, thermal, optical and mechanical properties. The enhanced interaction of CdO-ZnO nanoparticles with epoxy has resulted in superior …

Zinc-dust waste from a hot-dip galvanizing plant in the metal plating industry was successfully used as the starting material to synthesize zinc oxide (ZnO) nanopowder via a hydrothermal method. Effects of acid types in zinc-dust dissolving process and concentration of NaOH for precipitation on physical characteristics and photocatalytic activity of the synthesized ZnO were investigated. Elemental composition, phase and crystallite size, morphology with chemical composition, and specific surface area of the ZnO nanostructures were characterized by X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), and gas adsorption-desorption analysis, respectively. The photocatalytic performance …
