Policing Veterans: What The Veterans Affairs Police Can Illustrate About The Policing Of Disability In America, Zachary R.M. Outzen Jan 2023

Policing Veterans: What The Veterans Affairs Police Can Illustrate About The Policing Of Disability In America, Zachary R.M. Outzen

Faculty Publications

The Department of Veterans Affairs Police (“VA Police”), a federal law enforcement agency tasked with law enforcement on Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) properties, has a shocking record of misconduct and brutality against veterans. Because the VA is the largest integrated healthcare system in the United States, the VA Police are primarily responsible for policing VA medical facilities. While issues facing the veteran community have largely been analyzed as separate from those facing the American public at large, VA medical facilities replicate broader socioeconomic trends in policing of vulnerable populations. Veterans receiving VA healthcare services are disproportionately likely to be …

Episodic Magma Hammers For The 15 January 2022 Cataclysmic Eruption Of Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai, Yingcai Zheng, Hao Hu, Frank J. Spera, Melissa Scruggs, Glenn Thompson, Yuesu Jin, Tom Lapen, Stephen R. Mcnutt, Kyle Mandli, Zhigang Peng, Dave A. Yuen Jan 2023

Episodic Magma Hammers For The 15 January 2022 Cataclysmic Eruption Of Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai, Yingcai Zheng, Hao Hu, Frank J. Spera, Melissa Scruggs, Glenn Thompson, Yuesu Jin, Tom Lapen, Stephen R. Mcnutt, Kyle Mandli, Zhigang Peng, Dave A. Yuen

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Understanding the forces and magma system dynamics on timescales of seconds to minutes remains challenging. In the January 2022 phreatoplinian Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai eruption, four remarkably similar seismic subevents within a 5-min interval occurred during the intensifying early eruptive phase. The subevents are similar in waveforms and durations (∼25 s each). Each subevent begins with an unusual negative P-wave polarity which is inferred, using full-wave seismic modeling, to be caused by an upward single-force mechanism at the volcano created by a magma hammer likely in response to magma flow blockage/constriction during the early part of the eruption as discharge rapidly …

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Many headwater wetlands are integrated into flowpath networks and can serve as sources of streamflow for downgradient waters. We demonstrate this with five years of data in vernal pool, swale, and headwater stream complexes in the Central Valley, California. Long-term United States Geological Survey data suggest that the mean flow duration from the smallest watersheds in this region, including those with vernal pool, swale, and headwater stream complexes, is ~ 85 days per year. Our data concur, indicating that the annual days of flow per year from our vernal pool, swale, and headwater stream complexes ranges from ~ 20–200, but …

Taxes, Administrative Law, And Agency Expertise: Questioning The Orthodoxy, Scott Schumacher Jan 2023

Taxes, Administrative Law, And Agency Expertise: Questioning The Orthodoxy, Scott Schumacher

Articles

One of the foundations of administrative law is that federal agencies and their employees are experts in their respective fields. In addition, the many judgments and decisions made by these experts are based on a thorough record after extensive factfinding. As a result, so the theory goes, courts, particularly courts of general jurisdiction like the United States District Courts, should give deference to the determinations made by these experts. But what if the facts underpinning this foundation are not true in all cases? Should courts nevertheless provide deference to decisions by agencies when it is evident that an agency's determinations …

Due Process Deportations, Angelica Chazaro Jan 2023

Due Process Deportations, Angelica Chazaro

Articles

Should pro-immigrant advocates pursue federally funded counsel for all immigrants facing deportation? For most pro-immigrant advocates and scholars, the answer is self-evident: More lawyers for immigrants would mean more justice for immigrants, and thus, the federal government should fund such lawyers. Moreover, the argument goes, federally funded counsel for immigrants would improve due process and fairness, as well as make immigration enforcement more efficient. This Article argues the opposite: Federally funded counsel is the wrong goal. The majority of expulsions of immigrants now happen outside immigration courts— and thus are impervious to immigration lawyering. Even for those who make it …

Probabilistic Solutions Of Fractional Differential And Partial Differential Equations And Their Monte Carlo Simulations, Tamer Oraby, Erwin Suazo, Harrinson Arrubla Jan 2023

Probabilistic Solutions Of Fractional Differential And Partial Differential Equations And Their Monte Carlo Simulations, Tamer Oraby, Erwin Suazo, Harrinson Arrubla

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

The work in this paper is four-fold. Firstly, we introduce an alternative approach to solve fractional ordinary differential equations as an expected value of a random time process. Using the latter, we present an interesting numerical approach based on Monte Carlo integration to simulate solutions of fractional ordinary and partial differential equations. Thirdly, we show that this approach allows us to find the fundamental solutions for fractional partial differential equations (PDEs), in which the fractional derivative in time is in the Caputo sense and the fractional in space one is in the Riesz–Feller sense. Lastly, using Riccati equation, we …

Let ν be a Borel probability measure on a d-dimensional Euclidean space Rd, d≥1, with a compact support, and let (p0,p1,p2,…,pN) be a probability vector with pj>0 for 1≤j≤N. Let {Sj:1≤j≤N} be a set of contractive mappings on Rd. Then, a Borel probability measure μ on Rd such that μ=∑Nj=1pjμ∘S−1j+p0ν is called an inhomogeneous measure, also known as a condensation measure on Rd. For a given r∈(0,+∞), the quantization dimension of order r, if it exists, denoted by Dr(μ), of a Borel probability measure μ on Rd represents the speed at which the nth quantization error of order r …

Classification On Boundary-Equilibria And Singular Continuums Of Continuous Piecewise Linear Systems, Hebai Chen, Zhaosheng Feng, Hao Yang, Linfeng Zhou

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

In this paper, we show that any switching hypersurface of n -dimensional continuous piecewise linear systems is an (n−1) -dimensional hyperplane. For two-dimensional continuous piecewise linear systems, we present local phase portraits and indices near the boundary equilibria (i.e. equilibria at the switching line) and singular continuum (i.e. continuum of nonisolated equilibria) between two parallel switching lines. The index of singular continuum is defined. Then we show that boundary-equilibria and singular continuums can appear with many parallel switching lines.

Note On Illuminating Constant Width Bodies, Alexey Glazyrin

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

Recently, Arman, Bondarenko, and Prymak constructed a constant width body in R n whose illumination number is exponential in n. In this note, we improve their bound by generalizing the construction. In particular, we construct a constant width body in R n whose illumination number is at least (τ + o(1))n, where τ ≈ 1.047.

Constrained Quantization For Probability Distributions, Megha Pandey, Mrinal Kanti Roychowdhury Jan 2023

Constrained Quantization For Probability Distributions, Megha Pandey, Mrinal Kanti Roychowdhury

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

In this paper, for a Borel probability measure P on a Euclidean space Rk, we extend the definitions of nth unconstrained quantization error, unconstrained quantization dimension, and unconstrained quantization coefficient, which traditionally in the literature known as nth quantization error, quantization dimension, and quantization coefficient, to the definitions of nth constrained quantization error, constrained quantization dimension, and constrained quantization coefficient. The work in this paper extends the theory of quantization and opens a new area of research. In unconstrained quantization, the elements in an optimal set are the conditional expectations in their own Voronoi regions, and it is not true …

Equity In Focus : Investigating Gender Disparities In Glioblastoma Via Propensity Score Matching, Solomon Eshun Jan 2023

Equity In Focus : Investigating Gender Disparities In Glioblastoma Via Propensity Score Matching, Solomon Eshun

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

Gender disparities in health outcomes have garnered significant attention, prompting investigations into their underlying causes. Glioblastoma (GBM), a devastating and highly aggressive form of brain tumor, serves as a case for such inquiries. Despite the mounting evidence on gender disparities in GBM outcomes, investigations specific at the molecular level remain scarce and often limited by confounding biases in observational studies. In this study, I aimed to investigate the gender-related differences in GBM outcomes using propensity score matching (PSM) to control for potential confounding variables. The data used was accessed from the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), encompassing factors such as gender, …

Pharmacy Faculty Publications and Presentations

The pathogen Ophidiomyces ophidiicola, widely known as the primary cause of snake fungal disease (SFD), has been detected in Texas’s naïve snakes. Our team set out to characterize O. ophidiicola’s spread in eastern Texas. From December 2018 until November 2021, we sampled and screened with ultraviolet (UV) light 176 snakes across eastern Texas and detected 27. O. ophidiicola’s positive snakes using qPCR and one snake in which SFD was confirmed via additional histological examination. Upon finding the ribbon snake with a clear clinical display, we isolated and cultured what we believe to be the first culture from Texas. This cultured …

Interrelationships In Inventory Turnover Performance Between Supplier And Customer Firms, Joseph J. Henry, Peter Christensen, James C. Brau Jan 2023

Interrelationships In Inventory Turnover Performance Between Supplier And Customer Firms, Joseph J. Henry, Peter Christensen, James C. Brau

Faculty Publications

Using inventory turnover to measure the efficiency of corporate inventory management, we perform econometric analyses to verify whether the inventory efficiency of a firm’s supply chain partners is a statistically significant driver of the firm’s own inventory efficiency. We test two mutually exclusive hypotheses. First, suppliers hold inventory on behalf of customers, effectively displacing inventory up the supply chain and resulting in a negative correlation between supplier and customer inventory turnover. Alternatively, inventory efficiency is integrated along the supply chain, resulting in a positive correlation between supplier and customer inventory turnover. Our bivariate and multivariate analyses of both firm- and …

Qualitative Oral-Presentation Feedback: Comparisons From Business Professionals, Instructors, And Student Peers, Matt Baker, William H. Baker Jan 2023

Qualitative Oral-Presentation Feedback: Comparisons From Business Professionals, Instructors, And Student Peers, Matt Baker, William H. Baker

Faculty Publications

Previous studies compare quantitative feedback ratings of student peers and instructors, but new presentation-feedback technologies enable qualitative-feedback comparison. This study extends previous research by comparing qualitative feedback and business professionals’ feedback. Compared to the professionals, the instructors provided similar feedback types and sentiment; students, however, de-emphasized message delivery and made fewer suggestions for improvement. The results suggest that students may need additional practice in critiquing message delivery and in suggesting needed improvements in their peers’ oral presentations. The study also provides a methodology using the new technologies for instructors to calibrate their own and their students’ feedback with professionals’ feedback.

Theming, Service Performance, And Downstream Effects Of Subjective Leisure Experiences, Brian J. Hill, Patti Freeman, Gary Ellis, Emily Catalan

Faculty Publications

We examined determinants (i.e., theming and service performance) and results (proclivity to recommend, enjoyment, perceived value of time spent) of structured leisure experiences. Structured leisure experiences were measured in terms of intensity of engagement (focus on unfolding narrative), absorption (focus on sensory stimuli), and immersion (focus on performance) during participation. Experience measures (n=310) reported by 168 young adults upon exiting a variety of leisure, recreation, and hospitality venues supported the research hypotheses.

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Arts and Humanities

This monograph titled Audiences and new forms of broadcast: linear, on-demand, streaming and/or social has five articles that represent the complexity of the phenomenon of audiences across fields and from different perspectives: Traditional television consumption, viewing of Netflix, the social audience of video platforms, the new tastes of viewers for vertical formats driven by mobile phones, and the relationship of influencers with their audiences. This number raises the problem of audience measurement, quantification, and comparison in the new digital age. The measurement of audiovisual audiences faces the problem of the lack of a measurement system accepted in all regions and …

Toxic Timescapes: Examining Toxicity Across Time And Space, Simone M. Müller, May-Brith Ohman Nielsen Jan 2023

Toxic Timescapes: Examining Toxicity Across Time And Space, Simone M. Müller, May-Brith Ohman Nielsen

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

An interdisciplinary environmental humanities volume that explores human-environment relationships on our permanently polluted planet.

While toxicity and pollution are ever present in modern daily life, politicians, juridical systems, media outlets, scholars, and the public alike show great difficulty in detecting, defining, monitoring, or generally coming to terms with them. This volume’s contributors argue that the source of this difficulty lies in the struggle to make sense of the intersecting temporal and spatial scales working on the human and more-than-human body, while continuing to acknowledge race, class, and gender in terms of global environmental justice and social inequality.

The term toxic …

Robustness Of Image-Based Malware Classification Models Trained With Generative Adversarial Networks, Ciaran Reilly, Stephen O Shaughnessy, Christina Thorpe

Conference papers

As malware continues to evolve, deep learning models are increasingly used for malware detection and classification, including image based classification. However, adversarial attacks can be used to perturb images so as to evade detection by these models. This study investigates the effectiveness of training deep learning models with Generative Adversarial Network-generated data to improve their robustness against such attacks. Two image conversion methods, byte plot and space-filling curves, were used to represent the malware samples, and a ResNet-50 architecture was used to train models on the image datasets. The models were then tested against a projected gradient descent attack. It …

Bilstm−Bigru: A Fusion Deep Neural Network For Predicting Air Pollutant Concentration, Prasanjit Dey, Soumyabrata Dev, Bianca Schoen-Phelan Jan 2023

Bilstm−Bigru: A Fusion Deep Neural Network For Predicting Air Pollutant Concentration, Prasanjit Dey, Soumyabrata Dev, Bianca Schoen-Phelan

Conference papers

Predicting air pollutant concentrations is an efficient way to prevent incidents by providing early warnings of harmful air pollutants. A precise prediction of air pollutant concentrations is an important factor in controlling and preventing air pollution. In this paper, we develop a bidirectional long-short-term memory and a bidirectional gated recurrent unit (BiLSTM−BiGRU) to predict PM 2.5 concentrations in a target city for different lead times. The BiLSTM extracts preliminary features, and the BiGRU further extracts deep features from air pollutant and meteorological data. The fully connected (FC) layer receives the output and makes an accurate prediction of the PM 2.5 …

Combinedeepnet: A Deep Network For Multistep Prediction Of Near-Surface Pm2.5 Concentration, Prasanjit Dey, Soumyabrata Dev, Bianca Schoen-Phelan

Conference papers

PM2.5 is a type of air pollutant that can cause respiratory and cardiovascular problems. Precise PM2.5 ( μg/m3 ) concentration prediction may help reduce health concerns and provide early warnings. To better understand air pollution, a number of approaches have been presented for predicting PM2.5 concentrations. Previous research used deep learning models for hourly predictions of air pollutants due to their success in pattern recognition, however, these models were unsuitable for multisite, long-term predictions, particularly in regard to the correlation between pollutants and meteorological data. This article proposes the combine deep network (CombineDeepNet), which combines multiple deep networks, including a …

Actor-Centric Spatio-Temporal Feature Extraction For Action Recognition, Anil Kunchala, Bianca Schoen-Phelan, Mélanie Bouroche Jan 2023

Actor-Centric Spatio-Temporal Feature Extraction For Action Recognition, Anil Kunchala, Bianca Schoen-Phelan, Mélanie Bouroche

Conference papers

Action understanding involves the recognition and detection of specific actions within videos. This crucial task in computer vision gained significant attention due to its multitude of applications across various domains. The current action detection models, inspired by 2D object detection methods, employ two-stage architectures. The first stage is to extract actor-centric video sub-clips, i.e. tubelets of individuals, and the second stage is to classify these tubelets using action recognition networks. The majority of these recognition models utilize a frame-level pre-trained 3D Convolutional Neural Networks (3D CNN) to extract spatio-temporal features of a given tubelet. This, however, results in suboptimal spatio-temporal …
