Prior to 2009 the geoarcheological landscape of the lower Rio Grande valley was virtually a tabula rasa within the scholarship of archeology and geology. To rectify this shortcoming the Community Historical Archeology Project with Schools (CHAPS) Program was created from an interdisciplinary team of scholars with research interests in the Rio Grande valley while working initially with undergraduate and graduate students conducting in-depth studies of family farms and working with collectors to identify archeological sites. Through time the CHAPS Program created forums for locally focused K-12 education while developing community engagement initiatives to encourage public heritage tourism. One, the Ancient …

All Student Theses and Dissertations
The 2020 Major League Baseball season was shortened by a few months due to travel restrictions implemented in response to Coronavirus pandemic. When baseball began in mid-July, the schedule had been changed so that teams were mostly playing against division opponents. This left some fans wondering how different the 2020 season would have looked if the original schedule of 162 games were played. A website called Strat-O-Matic used the Monte Carlo method to simulate a full 2020 season. This paper proposes and explores other possible models for predicting the outcome of the season. The first model we present is a …

All Student Theses and Dissertations
The increased implementation of digitalization which has come to rise has also raised concerns in terms of privacy and security of the data. Data leaks and stealing of privacy are some of the common practices which have grown over the years. Social engineering majorly depends on the normal human instincts for trusting in stealing personal as well as corporate information which can be implemented for committing the cybercrimes further. The attackers can use social engineering for convincing an employee for divulging the passwords of the company. Hence, there is a need to understand the fact of how social engineering can …

Flawed Feminism: An Exploration Of Femininity In Contemporary Domestic Noir, Tyler Miller
Flawed Feminism: An Exploration Of Femininity In Contemporary Domestic Noir, Tyler Miller
All Student Theses and Dissertations
Crime fiction is a genre whose female characters are often misunderstood, weak, powerless victims. Domestic noir, a subgenre of crime fiction, does the opposite. Authors of domestic noir fiction dig into the female experiences, seeking to understand and write women characters who represent feminism and femininity despite any shortcomings they have. In Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty, I argue that reading this novel through the Critical Feminist Theory changes the interpretation of the female experience. Instead of reading the book for entertainment, digging into the larger scale issues in this book sheds light on the women’s experiences. Gone Girl …

Autodocking Studies Of Oxygenated Fullerenes As Inhibitors Of The Hiv Protease, Michael Kaminski
All Student Theses and Dissertations
In a previous study, several oxygenated fullerene compounds were produced by ozonation of C60 (Buckminsterfullerene) and were identified by elemental analysis and by SALI (surface analysis by laser ionization). Some of these compounds, especially a batch, SK-5, a mixture of C60O1-8, were shown to inhibit activities of HIV-Protease with IC50 (concentration for 50% inhibition) of 1 mg/mol in the in-vitro studies. The oxygenated fullerenes were shown to have epoxide, ketones, and hydroxyl functionalities. As expected, C60 interacted with ozone with alkene functionality and not as an aromatic compound. It was postulated that C60O had epoxide functionality, as a product of …

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications
This chapter discusses the implicit and explicit strategies the authors, four Black women graduate students, use to mentor each other. They use an iterative storytelling process, guided by a framework uncovered from data collected through Sista Circle Methodology, to discuss how their cohort itself is a conscious being with a mind, heart, body, and soul; that contributes to political and social change at our historically white institution. Their implications are for both graduate students and stakeholders in institutions of higher education – including faculty, staff, and administrators.

Synthesizing Energy Transitions, Danielle Stokes, Nadia Ahmad, Uma Outka, Hannah Wiseman
Law Faculty Publications
This Article assesses the growing and cross-disciplinary literature on energy transitions to explore how it can guide law and policy reforms for the energy sector. The modern conception of energy transition centers primarily on clean energy—a shift away from fossil energy dependence. It also, however, incorporates equity as a core principle, as an increasing emphasis on energy justice and just transition seeks to create guiding norms for the energy sector’s current state of change. The concept of energy transition is critical for describing and giving meaning to a fundamental societal shift at the local, regional, national, and global scales, aligned …

Shirley Anita St. Hill Chisholm is an American hero, one whose legacy and likeness have achieved iconic status within popular political culture, particularly as women have increasingly sought elected office. In 2019 in her home state of New York, Governor Andrew Cuomo created a state park in her honor. Several months earlier, New York City mayor Bill de Blasio’s administration had announced the creation of a monument in Chisholm’s honor in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park. Both sites incorporate and rely on both the visual depictions of Chisholm that have become political iconography—the Congresswoman’s dark brown face and glasses centered by a …
The Haunting Of Wealth Law, Allison Anna Tait
The Haunting Of Wealth Law, Allison Anna Tait
Law Faculty Publications
Wealth law is full of ghosts, ghosts everywhere all at once. As a form of both preservation and disruption, a form of continuance as well as a form of interruption, ghosts are reminders of the past in its multiple forms. But they are also figures that prompt consideration of the present as well as speculation about the future. Jacques Derrida, who suggested the idea of “hauntology,” posited haunting and the ghostly as being “time out of joint,” a reference to Hamlet’s confused cry upon seeing his father’s ghost that Derrida analyzes extensively. In this sense, ghosts are akin to inheritance, …

Understanding the evolutionary origins and factors maintaining alternative life history strategies (ALHS) within species is a major goal of evolutionary research. While alternative alleles causing discrete ALHS are expected to purge or fix over time, one-third of the ~90 species of Colias butterflies are polymorphic for a female-limited ALHS called Alba. Whether Alba arose once, evolved in parallel, or has been exchanged among taxa is currently unknown. Using comparative genome-wide association study (GWAS) and population genomic analyses, we placed the genetic basis of Alba in time-calibrated phylogenomic framework, revealing that Alba evolved once near the base of the genus and …

Plaintiffs’ lawyers in the United States play a key role in combating corporate fraud. Shareholders who lose money as a result of fraud can file securities class actions to recover their losses, but most shareholders do not have enough money at stake to justify overseeing the cases filed on their behalf. As a result, plaintiffs’ lawyers control these cases, deciding which cases to file and how to litigate them. Recognizing the agency costs inherent in this model, the legal system relies on lead plaintiffs and judges to monitor these lawyers and protect the best interests of absent class members. Yet …

Two observations about the operation of the criminal legal system are so widely accepted that they are seem undeniable: First, it is a system of pleas, not trials. Second, the system is too punitive and must be reformed. One could easily think, therefore, that the Rules of Evidence, which apply intentionally and explicitly only to the adjudicatory phase of criminal procedure, have nothing to do with the solution. And legal scholarship focusing on decarceration largely reflects this assumption: while many have explored reforms that target front end system actors and processes that lead people into the system (e.g. police, prosecutors, …
