Ultrasound-Guided Percutaneous Intercostal Cryoneurolysis For Acute-On-Chronic Pain In Cloves Syndrome, Sudipta Sen, Johanna B De Haan, Mariam Mehrafza, Nadia Hernandez

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Cryoneurolysis is an analgesic method that has been shown to provide extended pain relief in postoperative patients. However, to date, this method has not been described in nonsurgical inpatients with chronic pain experiencing an acute exacerbation. This analgesic modality has the potential to provide pain relief for patients whose expected duration of severe acute pain would outlast that of other regional anesthetic techniques while avoiding opioid escalation and facilitating discharge. We present a patient with acute exacerbation of chronic pain from breast ulcerations caused by congenital lipomatous overgrowth, vascular malformations, epidermal nevis, spinal/skeletal anomalies/scoliosis (CLOVES) syndrome that was successfully treated …

The human brain contributes 2% of the body weight yet receives 15% of cardiac output and demands a constant supply of oxygen (O 2) and nutrients to meet its metabolic needs. Cerebral autoregulation is responsible for maintaining a constant cerebral blood flow that provides the supply of oxygen and maintains the energy storage capacity. We selected oxygen administration-related studies published between 1975-2021 that included meta-analysis, original research, commentaries, editorial, and review articles. In the present narrative review, several important aspects of the oxygen effects on brain tissues and cerebral autoregulation are discussed, as well the role of exogenous O 2 …

INTRODUCTION: Invasion of the central nervous system (CNS) is the most serious consequence of

METHODS: To further address this issue, we implanted a cranial window on the cortex of B6.129P2(Cg)-

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: We uncovered an early involvement of microglia that precedes invasion of the CNS by the parasite. We accomplished a detailed characterization of the progressive sequence of events that correlates with microglial morphological changes and microgliosis. Our findings unveiled a heterogeneous microglial response in places of initial homeostatic disruption near brain barriers and pointed out an exceptional capability of microglia to hamper parasite proliferation inside the brain. We …

Acetaminophen (APAP) overdose is a leading cause of acute liver injury in the USA. The chitinase 3-like-1 (Chi3l1) protein contributes to APAP-induced liver injury (AILI) by promoting hepatic platelet recruitment. Here, we report the development of a Chi3l1-targeting antibody as a potential therapy for AILI. By immunizing a rabbit successively with the human and mouse Chi3l1 proteins, we isolated cross-reactive monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) from single memory B cells. One of the human and mouse Chi3l1 cross-reactive mAbs was humanized and characterized in both

Protamines (PRM1 and PRM2) are small, arginine-rich, nuclear proteins that replace histones in the final stages of spermiogenesis, ensuring chromatin compaction and nuclear remodeling. Defects in protamination lead to increased DNA fragmentation and reduced male fertility. Since efficient sperm production requires the translocation of protamines from the cytoplasm to the nucleus, we investigated whether SPAG17, a protein crucial for intracellular protein trafficking during spermiogenesis, participates in protamine transport. Initially, we assessed the protein-protein interaction between SPAG17 and protamines using proximity ligation assays, revealing a significant interaction originating in the cytoplasm and persisting within the nucleus. Subsequently, immunoprecipitation and mass spectrometry …

Abstract. Space Interface is a collaboration between artist‐architect Mathew Emmett and the legendary Eberhard Kranemann, a German neo‐Fluxus artist and founding member of electronic music pioneers Kraftwerk. Here, Emmett describes how, through mixed‐reality performance and audiovisual installation, their work transforms architectural settings by using video and electronic improvisation to evoke extended levels of architectural reality. They consider buildings as psychological prostheses, and their experiments attempt to invert and extend what might constitute architecture.

Parental Effects Of Social Density On Mating Behaviour, Reproductive Success, And Longevity, Shaun Rowlands Jan 2023

Parental Effects Of Social Density On Mating Behaviour, Reproductive Success, And Longevity, Shaun Rowlands

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Organisms can adapt to changing environments, changing their investment strategies to increase their lifetime reproductive success. Contemporary evolutionary theory would suggest that organisms have evolved mechanisms which allow them to assess competition and acquire phenotypic responses that accurately responds to the environment, allowing for rapid changes in response to the social context. Selection would favour organisms which can make nongenetic parental effects, with parents evolving an ability pass on plasticity responses that optimize offspring fitness related traits to suit ecological challenges. In this thesis , I investigate how the social density affects the mating behaviour and offspring production of the …

Ecological And Oceanographic Interactions Of An Offshore Longline Mussel Farm, Llucia Mascorda-Cabre Jan 2023

Ecological And Oceanographic Interactions Of An Offshore Longline Mussel Farm, Llucia Mascorda-Cabre

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

A growing human population coupled with the need to protect marine ecosystems, requires sources of sustainable protein. Finfish aquaculture can produce a wide range of environmental impacts while shellfish aquaculture reports fewer negative effects, being classed a sustainable protein source. Mussels are ecosystem engineers and farms can mitigate the consequences of eutrophication while providing ecosystem services. The development of mussel farming has been limited by competition for coastal space, intensification of the industry causing environmental impacts due to bioaccumulation around farms, negative public perception and lack of research. Offshore aquaculture has the potential to overcome such issues but knowledge on …

The Criticality Of Teacher Educator Wellbeing: Reflecting Through Arts-Based Methods, Kristina Turner, Georgina M. Barton Dr, Susanne Garvis, Ellen Larsen

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Teacher educators face many challenges related to workload and government-mandated reforms in Initial Teacher Education programs. Evidence suggests that COVID-19 has exacerbated these challenges as universities must become more cost-effective and improve research outcomes and impact, often resulting in heavier workloads. While these challenges may be faced in other disciplines, teacher educator wellbeing, stress and burnout is an under-researched field, and little is known about if and how teacher educators maintain their wellbeing during times of uncertainty. This collaborative autoethnographic study applied an arts-based research method to explore the wellbeing challenges faced by four Australian teacher educators through the lens …

How Are Preservice Teachers Discursively Positioned During Microteaching? The Views Of Student Teachers In Hong Kong, John Trent Jan 2023

How Are Preservice Teachers Discursively Positioned During Microteaching? The Views Of Student Teachers In Hong Kong, John Trent

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

This paper reports the results of a qualitative study that used in-depth interviews to understand the experiences and perceptions of six pre-service teachers as they engaged in microteaching at a tertiary institution in Hong Kong. Using a framework grounded in dialogism and positioning theory, the study describes the ways in which different discourses offer, as well as deny, positions to the pre-service teachers as they planned and implemented microlessons. The results suggest that competition between these discourses to position pre-service teachers can result in microteaching being associated with negative emotional experiences, such as disappointment, isolation, and frustration. This emotional dissonance …

Exploring Challenges Faced By Early Career Primary School Teachers: A Qualitative Study, Deborah Black, Gregory Hine, Shane Lavery

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

This study explored the challenges faced by 23 primary early career teachers (ECTs) in their second, third or fourth years of teaching. Qualitative data were collected through an online semi-structured interview. Three themes were evident: parents, workload and behaviour management. These results were also reflected in the review of the literature. All three themes have been linked to increased ECT stress and have been found to undermine ECTs’ self-confidence. The results suggest that some challenges are potentially aligned to the stage of ECTs’ career development and that ECTs face different challenges as their teaching experience levels increase. A range of …

Supporting Learners Through Effective Communication: Student Teachers’ Communication Strategies To Address Learner Behaviour, Jirina Karasova, Gabriela Kleckova Jan 2023

Supporting Learners Through Effective Communication: Student Teachers’ Communication Strategies To Address Learner Behaviour, Jirina Karasova, Gabriela Kleckova

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Teachers’ communication skills are integral to classroom management skills. If teachers implement effective communication skills and appropriate communication strategies, they are more likely to support learner autonomy, engagement, self-concept, well-being, or responsibility and succeed in behaviour management. This study examines student teachers’ awareness and use of communication strategies to address common disruptive learner behaviours. Although the participants showed limited ability to support learners through communication, they were more likely to identify effective communication responses than to produce them themselves. The study unveils that student teachers in the last year of a graduate program cannot respond to disruptive behaviour without communication …

The Impact Of Theatre Pedagogy On Student Teachers’ Development Of Beliefs About Good Teaching And Their Pedagogical Ethos: An Exploratory Case Study, Angela Hadjipanteli

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

The development of student teachers’ beliefs about good teaching needs to be integral to their education programmes. This study attempts to scrutinise the contribution of a theatre education course to the conceptualisation of a group of eight student primary teachers’ notion of good teaching and a teacher’s ethos. The findings reveal that, within the coursework, student teachers’ learning experiences are interwoven with the ethics of the beautiful, the ethics of the dialogue and the ethics of the will. This nexus of learning experiences enabled them to identify three internal goods of good teaching: the awakening of learners’ positive emotions; …

Teachers' Views On The Nature Of Science: An Epistemological Analysis, Rafael Amador Rodríguez, Natalia Ospina Quintero, Agustín Adúriz Bravo

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

This article presents results of research analysing the views on the nature of science (NOS) among primary and secondary teachers working in state schools in two different cities in Colombia. Previous studies have reported that science teachers maintain ‘eclectic’ epistemological perspectives on science; in this article, we test if such hypothesis holds when teachers’ ideas are ‘anchored’ in specific periods and topics of the philosophy of science. Thirty-five teachers attending a postgraduate teaching course with emphasis on the natural sciences at the Universidad del Norte (Barranquilla, Colombia) were assessed with the use of quantitative, descriptive and parametric research methods. The …

Teachers’ Experiences That Challenge Their Decision To Continue: What Teachers Really Need, Elizabeth Allotta

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Increasing global teacher attrition rates and the difficulty of filling teacher positions in Australian schools have led to rising concerns about teacher supply and demand. While attrition factors and rates have been known for over thirty years, little has changed or improved. This raises the question, ‘how and why do some teachers continue while others leave?’ A postqualitative ethnographic study into the experiences that have challenged teachers’ decision to continue highlights the complexity of the issues underlying teacher attrition with known attrition factors, in particular workplace and time, being compounded by unspoken and silenced challenges that contribute to teachers leaving. …

Arguing For The Subjectification Of Graduate Teachers, Karen Maras, Geraldine Townend, Tony Loughland, Hoa Nguyen, Dennis Alonzo, Marie Mcgregor, Andy Gao, Tanya Kwee

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

The quality of graduate teachers is a significant concern for teacher educators, policymakers and the public. Initiatives regarding the quality assurance of initial teacher education (ITE) programs require critical examination to ensure that ITE programs develop proficient graduate teachers to meet the demands of modern classrooms. In this paper, we draw on Biesta’s (2015, 2019, 2020) theoretical framing of purpose in education (i.e., qualification, socialisation and subjectification) to analyse the policy texts related to graduate teaching performance assessment from institutions involved in the creation and implementation of the Teaching Performance Assessment (TPA) in ITE in Australia. Researchers used document analysis …

Scaffolding Methods And The Long Shadow Of Ramist Formalism: A Call For Correction In Teacher Education, Brian R. Moon Jan 2023

Scaffolding Methods And The Long Shadow Of Ramist Formalism: A Call For Correction In Teacher Education, Brian R. Moon

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Modern Anglophone pedagogy is characterised by some distinctive approaches to teaching and learning that set it apart from earlier instructional traditions. Among these are certain forms of scaffolding that emphasise students’ construction of knowledge. Such methods are consistent with a trend toward visible activity and display in pedagogical practice, in place of dialogue and inner contemplation. In ITE courses, scaffolding strategies are promoted to beginning teachers as novel and effective products of modern cognitive psychology and constructivist theories of learning. Here I offer a historical correction to that view, demonstrating that today’s popular scaffolding strategies have a much longer history, …
