Black Women's Relational Competencies And Ethical Leadership In The Workplace, S. Alease Ferguson, Toni C. King Jan 2023

Black Women's Relational Competencies And Ethical Leadership In The Workplace, S. Alease Ferguson, Toni C. King

Faculty Publications

Three qualitative case vignettes illustrate Black women leaders’ application of relational competencies to assert culturally informed ethical values in organizational life. Theoretical frameworks of Patricia Hill Collins’ (1994) theory of motherwork and Wilfred Bion’s (1991) psycho-dynamics theory of group development guide the analysis of Black women’s relational competencies. Methodologically, the data derive from the authors’ use of phenomenological review of over three decades of corporate and non-profit consultancies. This methodology entailed uncensored story genera- tion relative to the topic and culling of the story set guided by a rubric to screen for story features that exemplify group and relational competencies …

Survival In Common Snapping Turtles, Chelydra Serpentina (Testudines: Chelydridae), In Western Nebraska, John B. Iverson, Geoffrey R. Smith

Faculty Publications

Annual estimates of survival for Common Snapping Turtles (Chelydra serpentina) in western Nebraska USA were generated from mark-recapture data from nesting females encountered in 2005–2017. Our population models suggested no annual variation in either adult annual survival (0.947 ± 0.017 SE) or annual capture probability (0.294 ± 0.027 SE). However, there was a tendency toward higher survival in larger females. High annual survival (e.g. > 90%) characterises populations of Chelydra from Ontario to Texas.

Evaluating Healthcare Student Learning Performance During The Initial Year Of The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Case Study, Maria D. Garcia-Villarreal Jan 2023

Evaluating Healthcare Student Learning Performance During The Initial Year Of The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Case Study, Maria D. Garcia-Villarreal

Human Resource Development Theses and Dissertations

The COVID-19 pandemic caused a mass interruption to daily life lasting almost an entire academic year. Return to normalcy was hard won and phased over the following academic year. Neither time-period offered “traditional” learning experiences in academic institutions. The extent to which the operational shut-down affected academic institutions and their learners is just now beginning to be elucidated. Human resource development (HRD) is uniquely positioned to apply established and newly developed theories and applications to the study of this phenomenon. One particular case lends itself to observation. A major academic medical center launched a technology-driven state-of-the-art simulation education center mere …

Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Probably The Secret Codes, Jian Micah De Jesus Jan 2023

Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Probably The Secret Codes, Jian Micah De Jesus

SMU Law Review Forum

Roger Rabbit was falsely accused of murdering Marvin Acme, the owner of Toontown, after photos revealed Acme’s alleged affair with Roger’s wife. A few snapshots, while seemingly harmless, brought a 104-minute journey into uncovering the truth and scandal behind the murder and proving Roger’s innocence. And while the camera that took the photos was not necessarily a criminal justice technology that framed Roger Rabbit, there are real-life cases where a DNA software or a breathalyzer has negatively affected many defendants. Despite the proven usefulness of these technologies, it is not a perfect method in accusing and convicting defendants. The criminal …

Richard H. Shryock’S “Empiricism Versus Rationalism In American Medicine, 1650-1950”: A Commentary, Michael A. Flannery Jan 2023

Richard H. Shryock’S “Empiricism Versus Rationalism In American Medicine, 1650-1950”: A Commentary, Michael A. Flannery

Libraries Professional Work

Shryock's analysis of medical progress outlines the transition from crude empiricism and dogmatic rationalism to scientific empiricism. This shift, though non-linear, advanced medicine through controlled experiments, fostering breakthroughs like penicillin. Scientific empiricism improved public health and influenced the return to systemic concepts, particularly through genetic medicine and chronic disease research.

These “real world” projects provide students with problem-based learning opportunities which enable them to address “real world” problems and opportunities. The purpose of this research-in-progress is to determine the key success factors for “real world” projects. The concept of Principal-Agency Theory provides a theoretical lens for understanding these success factors from the viewpoint of students, faculty, and industry sponsors. The SIM academic research team will collect data from project teams across ten universities and for over 250 projects. Having multiple perspectives will contribute to an understanding of how to …

Measurements Of The Binding Energies Of Ions On Plastic Surfaces In Liquid Nitrogen, Ashok Timsina Jan 2023

Measurements Of The Binding Energies Of Ions On Plastic Surfaces In Liquid Nitrogen, Ashok Timsina

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

To improve the present limit of the neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM) from 1.8*10-26 e. cm to ~ 3*10-28 e. cm, the nEDM@SNS experiment plans to increase neutron density by storing ultracold neutrons in superfluid helium-4. In this experiment, the central part of the apparatus consists of two deuterated tetraphenyl butadiene (dTPB) coated poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) cells, which are sandwiched between grounded and high-voltage electrodes. To achieve such precision, the externally applied electric field has to be stable at the 1% level over a time period of about 1000 s. Several sources of ambient ionizing radiation generate charged …

Mechanical And Morphological Characterization Of Energy Materials By Nanoindentation And Scanning Probe Microscopy, Jacob Hempel Jan 2023

Mechanical And Morphological Characterization Of Energy Materials By Nanoindentation And Scanning Probe Microscopy, Jacob Hempel

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

The demand for robust materials in energy-based applications such as solid electrolytes for batteries, piezoelectric composites for mechanical energy harvesting, or new polymer materials for polymer binders in composite electrodes is on the rise. Mechanical degradation is the most common way for devices to fail in operation, thus a thorough understanding of a material’s mechanical properties is essential for application purposes.

In this dissertation, the mechanical characterization of novel boron cluster solid electrolytes is presented. Therein, we determine the elastic modulus and hardness of these compounds using instrumented indentation. A comparison is made against other solid electrolytes. It is found …

Design Of The Highly Uniform Magnetic Field And Spin-Transport Magnetic Field Coils For The Los Alamos National Lab Neutron Electric Dipole Moment Experiment, Jared Brewington Jan 2023

Design Of The Highly Uniform Magnetic Field And Spin-Transport Magnetic Field Coils For The Los Alamos National Lab Neutron Electric Dipole Moment Experiment, Jared Brewington

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

Charge-Parity (CP) violation is one of Sakharov's three conditions which serve as guidelines for the generation of a matter-antimatter asymmetry in the early universe. The Standard Model (SM) of particle physics contains sources of CP violation which can be used to predict the baryon asymmetry. The observed baryon asymmetry is not predicted from SM calculations, meaning there must be additional sources of CP violation beyond the Standard Model (BSM) to generate the asymmetry. Permanent electric dipole moments (EDMs), which are inherently parity- and time reversal- violating, present a promising avenue for the discovery of new sources of CP violation to …

Social Transformation During The Middle - Late Preclassic (1,000 Bce - 150 Bce) At Ucí, Yucatan Mexico, Daniel Vallejo-Cáliz Jan 2023

Social Transformation During The Middle - Late Preclassic (1,000 Bce - 150 Bce) At Ucí, Yucatan Mexico, Daniel Vallejo-Cáliz

Theses and Dissertations--Anthropology

The focus of this project is to track the social change developments in Ucí, Yucatan, Mexico, during the Middle (1,000 – 400 BCE) and Late Preclassic (400 – 150 BCE) that served as foundations to institutionalized hierarchy. This research is geared towards understanding if there were any expressions of social differentiation in the earliest, detectable moments in the history of Ucí, and what were the mechanisms used to eventually make distinctions permanent. Applying an agency approach, I argue that social actors may cause structural change, both consciously and inadvertently, through the application of several strategies aimed to enhancing their role …

The Foxo1 Inhibitor As1842856 Triggers Apoptosis In Glioblastoma Multiforme And Basal-Like Breast Cancer Cells, David Flores, Alma Lopez, Shreya Udawant, Bonnie Gunn, Megan Keniry Jan 2023

The Foxo1 Inhibitor As1842856 Triggers Apoptosis In Glioblastoma Multiforme And Basal-Like Breast Cancer Cells, David Flores, Alma Lopez, Shreya Udawant, Bonnie Gunn, Megan Keniry

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)

Basal-like breast cancer (BBC) and glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) are poor-prognosis cancers that lack effective targeted therapies and harbor embryonic stem gene expression signatures. Recently, our group and others found that forkhead box transcription factor FOXO1 promotes stem gene expression in BBC and GBM cell lines. Given the critical role of cancer stem cells in promoting cancer progression, we examined the impact of FOXO1 inhibition with AS1842856 (a cell-permeable small molecule that directly binds to unphosphorylated FOXO1 protein to block transcriptional regulation) on BBC and GBM cell viability. We treated a set of BBC and GBM cancer cell lines with increasing …

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)

Nilgai antelope, Boselaphus tragocamelus and white-tailed deer (WTD), Odocoileus virginianus are hosts of cattle fever ticks, Rhipicephalus (=Boophilus) microplus, in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of South Texas. Daily use of water troughs and ponds were observed to determine if these locations could be used for field treatment methods for cattle fever ticks using remotely operated field sprayers. Game cameras (n=16) were deployed between June 2020 and September 2022 at two private ranches in Cameron County, TX. Both nilgai and WTD visited water troughs equipped with motion detecting sprayers in similar numbers to ponds, but numbers of animal visits were …
