Exploring Academic Libraries' Core Values, Julia K. Nims
Exploring Academic Libraries' Core Values, Julia K. Nims
Faculty Scholarship 2023
Many academic libraries create mission and vision statements to communicate their purpose, priorities, and aspirations to both internal and external stakeholders. Core values, which express a library’s guiding principles or behaviors, are often included as part of these foundational documents. However, while there is already a significant and growing body of literature examining academic library mission and vision statements, such as their inclusion of specific library roles or functions, far less attention has been paid to libraries’ core values. To better understand these public declarations of convictions, the core values from 24 academic libraries in Michigan and Ohio were collected …

Cornerstone: Journal of Archaeological Sites (حجر الزاوية)
The large-scale salvage excavation at Yavne unearthed the industrial area of the site, including seven winepresses, most of them of the complex type. Near the winepresses, a system of storerooms and access roads was revealed. The industrial area dates from the beginning of the Byzantine period to the beginning of the Early Islamic period (fourth–eighth centuries CE), reaching a peak in the sixth century CE. This article presents the elements comprising the winepresses, their uniqueness and stages of development. Based on the architectural elements of the winepresses, and their good state of preservation, new insights regarding wine production processes and …

The site of Rahat, located on the northern fringes of the Be’er Sheva‘ Valley, yielded a wealth of findings, including walls, floors, mosaics, tunnels, retaining walls and agricultural and subterranean facilities. This report aims at describing the geotechnical properties of the bedrock and soil units at the site and the region, used in the construction of the large variety of buildings and infrastructure. The report also considers the possible water sources that supported the agricultural facilities. The sediments in the area of Rahat point to a loess-based stratigraphy, including anthrosols, powdery sandy loess units and carbonate loess. The site’s stratigraphy …

ولادة الديانة المسيحية وانهيارها في شمال النقب / The Rise And Fall Of Christianity In The Northern Negev, Noe David Michael, Oren Shmueli, Elena Kogan-Zehavi
Cornerstone: Journal of Archaeological Sites (حجر الزاوية)
Over a period of approximately 1000 years, from the Hellenistic to the Early Islamic period, the northern Negev underwent many changes. During the Byzantine period, the population of the northern Negev reached its peak in terms of number of inhabitants and settlements. By the mid-fifth century CE, the majority of the local population was Christian; however, at no point in time was only one religion practiced in this region, as classical and other forms of paganism, Judaism, Christianity and Islam, and different combinations thereof, were practiced simultaneously. This paper considers the change in the religion of the local population, focusing …

Cornerstone: Journal of Archaeological Sites (حجر الزاوية)
Recently, Rahat has undergone significant development in anticipation of the expansion of the city, including the establishment of new residential neighborhoods, industrial and commercial areas, and educational institutions. As a result, dozens of previously unknown archaeological sites were discovered, revealing the magnificent and fascinating past of this city. The many archaeological excavations conducted in and around Rahat, on behalf of the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA), revealed sites dating from the Roman, Byzantine and Early Islamic periods, including farmhouses, monasteries, churches, mosques, estates, an industrial area and cemeteries. The excavation at Rahat (South) unearthed special findings from the Early Islamic period, …
قضاء بئر السبع وشبكة العلاقات بين قرى الجنوب والساحل الفلسطيني رهط المدينة العربية وكنوزها الأثرية / Bir Al-Saba’ And Its Networking With Southern Palestine And The Coastal Villages: The Arab City Of Rahat And Its Archaeological Treasures, Mansour Nasasra
Cornerstone: Journal of Archaeological Sites (حجر الزاوية)
This article addresses historical and social issues concerning the Arabs of the Neqab and the Bir al-Saba’ district since 1900, through the Ottoman and British periods and the post-Nakba period, until the establishment of the city of Rahat in 1972. It also sheds light on the historical relationship between the districts of Bir al-Saba’ and Gaza while relating to social, economic and geopolitical connections. The data presented is based on central themes published in the book “The Naqab Bedouin: A Century of Politics and Resistance” (Columbia University Press, New York), including archival materials from Istanbul, Jerusalem, London and Oxford, and …
المساجد المبكرة والمزرعة من رهط وأسلمة المناطق الريفية / Early Mosques And A Farmhouse In Rahat And The Islamization Of The Countryside, Jon Seligman
Cornerstone: Journal of Archaeological Sites (حجر الزاوية)
The excavation of small hamlets and farmhouses at Rahat, in the northern Negev, uncovered two modest mosques, each measuring around 6 × 5 m and including a prayer niche (miḥrab) that protrudes from their southern wall toward Mecca. Dating to the Umayyad and early Abbasid periods, the structures constitute the first rural mosques in the northern Negev. While mosques were a familiar feature in contemporary cities, they scarcely appear in the countryside, where Islam spread out in a gradual, drawn-out process. The discovery of the Rahat mosques indicates that Islam reached this part of the countryside rather early. The question …
تغلغل الإسلام في الأراضي المقدسة النائية - منظر أثري من النقب / The Penetration Of Islam To The Remote Holy Land: An Archaeological View From The Negev, Gideon Avni
Cornerstone: Journal of Archaeological Sites (حجر الزاوية)
Several mosques were recently associated with the widespread settlement network that existed in the Negev Highlands from the sixth to the eighth century CE. These include mosques that were built in urban settlements or adjacent to rural ones, and mosques that served the Negev Highlands’ nomadic populations. The chronological framework of the early mosques, their connection to dated settlements, and the formal relations between the earlier sites and the mosques, seem to point to a gradual penetration of Islam into southern Palestine rather than a swift adoption of canonical Islam in the wake of a single wave of conquest.

In 2022, a salvage excavation conducted south of the city of Rahat, prior to the establishment of a new neighborhood, uncovered remains dating from the Byzantine (fifth–seventh centuries CE) and Early Islamic (eighth–ninth centuries CE) periods. Several farmhouses dating to the late Byzantine period were uncovered, including a nearby church. At the end of the Byzantine period, the farmhouses were abandoned, the area of the church was reduced, and a winepress was built within it, until it too was finally abandoned. At the beginning of the Umayyad period, the area was resettled: agricultural estates were built and inhabited by an …

In the archaeological excavations near Rahat, several building complexes were uncovered, including monasteries, churches, settlement remains and agricultural farms dating from the Byzantine period, as well as mosques, dwellings and agricultural installations from the Early Islamic period. Five of these complexes were singled out as being of particular interest to the public and having the potential of becoming a touristic heritage site: a monastery, a church, two mosques, a palace and a mansion. The conservation plan aimed at the development of a recreational area, while preserving the archaeological remains within the residential neighborhoods, maintaining a connection between the local community …

Cornerstone: Journal of Archaeological Sites (حجر الزاوية)
A wealth of ancient runoff-agriculture (ARA) installations was documented in southern Israel. The viability of ancient runoff farming across different climatic regions and geological settings suggests an efficient exploitation of the local surrounding substrates (e.g., loess soil, rocky slopes). The present study considers new data, as well as previously published materials, from two desert sites: Shivṭa, in the Negev Highlands, and Rahat, in the Be’er Sheva‘ Valley. The Comparison between these two regions allows a better understanding of the distribution of ancient agricultural installations in relation to different geological constraints over different climatic regions. Applying geo-archaeological field surveys, supported by …

In 2022, a s salvage excavation was carried out in the south of the city of Rahat prior to the construction of a new neighborhood. Six sites were uncovered ( about 200 dunams in area) that join other similar sites in the northern Negev, which attest to the rural character of the region at the end of the Byzantine period. Monasteries, churches and agricultural farmhouses were built in the region, indicating that the area was inhabited by Christians starting at the early Byzantine period. The picture that emerges from the excavations at Rahat is of a continuous settlement that spanned …

Cornerstone: Journal of Archaeological Sites (حجر الزاوية)
Thousands of photographs scattered in archives across the globe depict the countryside landscapes of Syria-Palestine since the mid-nineteenth century. In addition, aerial photography in the Near East, much developed since World War I, became a useful tool for archaeologists, providing new angles for evaluating the location and distribution of ancient sites and their surrounding agricultural or steppe landscapes. These landscapes were usually understood by early travellers and explorers to reflect the authentic biblical or New Testament sceneries. Modern scholarship has occasionally adopted this approach, linking between the traditional agricultural landscapes of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and the remains …
آثار رهط مشروع تعليمي يعتمد نموذج التعلم المكاني وهو ملائم للمجتمع العربي وطلاب مدينة رهط / The “Antiquities Of Rahat” Educational Project: An Informal Learning Model For The Arab Society And Local School Students, Racheli Dagan
Cornerstone: Journal of Archaeological Sites (حجر الزاوية)
In January–August 2022, a salvage excavation was conducted in the city of Rahat, exposing remains dating from the Late Roman, Byzantine, Early Islamic and late Ottoman periods. The excavation results shed light on the first years of Islamic rule in the south of the country. The excavations at Rahat (South) aroused great curiosity among the local residents of Rahat and its vicinity, mainly following the discovery of a mansion dating from about 1200 years ago, the first of its kind in the Negev to date to the Early Islamic period, and a local mosque, one of the oldest in the …

Cornerstone: Journal of Archaeological Sites (حجر الزاوية)
Within the settlement of Giv‘ot Bar, north of Be’er Sheva‘, two excavation seasons were conducted, revealing a monastery (Area A) and a farmhouse (Area B) dated to the Byzantine period. The monastery (33 ׳ 38 m) comprised a central building, service rooms, a winepress and an open courtyard. The central building was entered from the south through the courtyard. The opening, which was blocked by a rounded stone, led to the refectory (dining room; R5), the ceiling of which was supported by four pillars that in-turn supported arches. The roof of the refectory was made of tiles. Beneath the refectory …

Cornerstone: Journal of Archaeological Sites (حجر الزاوية)
Some 30 glass finds in a fragmentary and corroded state of preservation were recovered from the site of Giv‘ot Bar, on the southwestern bank of Naḥal Peḥar. They were unearthed in debris upon the floors of a Byzantine-period monastery (Area A). The glass vessels, mostly including juglets and lamps, date to the late Byzantine period, the late sixth–seventh centuries CE; none of them could be distinctly dated to the Umayyad period, the eighth century CE. The monastery had been illuminated by three types of glass lamps, which were discovered in several of the monastery’s units. Furthermore, the windows in the …

In March–May 2022 and February–July 2023, archaeological excavations were carried out on the fringes of Ḥorbat Ma’aravim, located northwest of the city of Rahat, about 1.5 km east of Tel Ma’aravim. Within the site were uncovered the remains of buildings, floors, various installations, garbage pits, as well as stone, pottery and glass artifacts, attesting to a continuous settlement from the Roman until the Mamluk period. In the new excavation, the remains of a pottery workshop were uncovered (Areas B and D), about 100 m northwest of the modern cemetery of Rahat. Buildings that formed part of the pottery workshop were …

Two items bearing Arabic inscriptions were unearthed in the 2022 large-scale excavations on the outskirts of the city of Rahat, in the northern Negev; both objects were found within a large farmhouse. One object is an ostracon densely inscribed in Arabic, al-ṭirriyam min al naḥl al-u[lah], which translates as “The honey from the first bee/bees”—the word “honey” is written using a rare word. The other object is a stamped jar handle bearing an Arabic inscription written in two sizes of letters within a round feature, reading: Bara / kah/ Zaydī or Raydī, which translates as “Blessing [to] a man named …

ثلاثة نقوش يونانية من دير چڤعات بار / Three Greek Inscriptions From Giv‘Ot Bar, Leah Di Segni Di Segni
Cornerstone: Journal of Archaeological Sites (حجر الزاوية)
Three Greek inscriptions were discovered in the excavation of a small coenobium at Giv‘ot Bar (Area A). Inscription 1 was set in the mosaic pavement of the chapel, in front of the passage giving access to the easternmost room, which functioned as chancel (presbyterium). The inscription reads: “(cross) Selamon deacon (cross) and administrator and Fidus and Selmon and Zanios apocrisiarius. May the Lord bless the coenobium of Betomorsy. Amen”. Two other inscriptions were painted on building blocks found in the debris at the foot of the northeastern pillar in Room 5, near the entrance of the chapel. Inscription 2 reads: …

بناء المنجل الصواني وصيانته في جنوب بلاد الشام خلال الألفي السادس والخامس قبل الميلاد / Keeping The Razor Sharp: Hafting And Maintenance Of Sickles In The Southern Levant During The Sixth And Fifth Millennia Bce, Jacob Vardi, Isaac Gilead
Cornerstone: Journal of Archaeological Sites (حجر الزاوية)
The paper focuses on the major factors that determine the shape of the sickle inserts (i.e., sickle blades): the hafting and the maintenance of working edges procedures. Changes in morphological and metric traits of inserts between the Pottery Neolithic and the Chalcolithic periods reflect standardization in the fabrication of sickles and a rise in the level of specialization of cereal production in the Southern Levant in the fifth millennium BCE.

Cornerstone: Journal of Archaeological Sites (حجر الزاوية)
The Yavne excavation project was undertaken in an area of approximately 3466 dunams in advance of the construction of a vast new neighborhood adjacent to the existing railroad to respond to local population growth. This included, inter alia, the paving of new access roads to the neighborhood and the implementation of large-scale infrastructure, both of which would greatly affect the original landscape. The Yavne area is known to be dotted with archaeological remains, entailing excavation and documentation, and thus, the planning authorities were confronted with questions of sustainability and preservation of ancient cultures. The Yavne excavation was termed ‘mega-project’ as …

Tel Yavne is located in the inner part of the southern coastal plain, on the northern edge of the kurkar ridge (sandstone with carbonate aeolianite), east and north of Naḥal Soreq. The Naḥal Soreq valley was filled with sediments, some of which developed into grumusol-type soils. Today, Naḥal Soreq is a perennial stream, but it is likely that its riverbed, located some 250 m north of Tel Yavne, had conveyed a steady flow of water when the site was inhabited, serving as a source of water for the settlement and the industrial area at its foothill. The salvage excavations at …

Cornerstone: Journal of Archaeological Sites (حجر الزاوية)
In 2019, the Israel Antiquities Authority, in cooperation with the Municipality of Yavne and funded by the Israel Land Authority, initiated an extensive excavation at the foot of Tel Yavne. The excavation was conducted by two succeeding expeditions: the first, between 2019–2021, was headed by Dr. Elie Haddad, Liat Nadav Ziv and Dr. Jon Seligman, and the second, which began in 2021 and still ongoing, is headed by Pablo Betzer and Dr. Daniel Varga. Excavations at the site uncovered findings from the Chalcolithic period till the days of the British Mandate. The layout of the remains, their nature and intensity, …

Cornerstone: Journal of Archaeological Sites (حجر الزاوية)
This article reviews the history of two central ancient settlements located on the southern coastal plain: the city of Yavne and the port city of Yavne-Yam, from the Persian period until after the Crusader conquest (fifth century BCE–twelfth century CE), as they are reflected in the written sources and mainly, in the archaeological record. The settlements of Yavne and Yavne-Yam maintained a reciprocal relationship, as well as a relationship of dependence, probably based on their geographical proximity: Yavne served as an administrative and economic center, commanding the major crossroads, while Yavne-Yam served as a natural anchorage, offering convenient access to …

Cornerstone: Journal of Archaeological Sites (حجر الزاوية)
In the excavations conducted to the east of Tel Yavne, remains from several periods were uncovered, including, for the first time, Chalcolithic-period remains. Based on the trial sections and excavations, it is possible to estimate the size of the Chalcolithic site at 18 dunams. The archaeological layers dating to this period were reached at a depth of 2–3 m below the surface, in the trough between the kurkar ridges, next to the ancient riverbed of Naḥal Soreq; the course of this stream was identified in the excavation. So far, three small sections belonging to the Chalcolithic settlement were unearthed (Areas …

In 2002, a repository pit (Favissa/Geniza) was discovered in the Giv‘at Rishonim neighborhood in Yavne. The pit was full of “goodies”—objects that people had brought or donated to the temple—which were eventually buried by the temple authorities. Due to their sacredness (a Philistine sacredness from the ninth century BCE!), the objects were deliberately broken, either before or while throwing them into the pit. The excavation of the pit was challenging, as it contained thousands of broken bowls and chalices exhibiting soot remains, probably of incense; fragments of small incense-altars made of stone and clay; dozens of broken pottery censers—bowl-like vessels that …
