Journal of Bioresource Management

Cholestasis is characterized by the obstruction of bile flow from hepatocytes to the intestine. It results in accumulation of bile acids in the liver, which cause oxidative stress, inflammation, apoptosis, fibrosis, and cirrhosis. Till now, the treatment options against cholestasis are limited. Therefore, there is an utmost requirement to develop and evaluate the drugs with potential anti-cholestatic effects. In the current study, the drug-induced cholestasis mouse models were generated via oral administration of α-naphthylisothiocyanate (ANIT). The mice were placed into three groups of six animals each. Group I was the control group and was given saline. The cholestasis model Group …

Chimera Baryon Spectrum In The Sp(4) Completion Of Composite Higgs Models, Ho Hsiao, Ed Bennett, Deog Ki Hong, Jong-Wan Lee, C.-J. David Lin, Biagio Lucini, Maurizio Piai, Davide Vadacchino

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

In strongly coupled gauge theories that serve as completions of composite Higgs models, thefermionic bound states formed by fermions (hyperquarks) transforming in different representations, called chimera baryons, could serve as top partners, by embedding of the Standard Modelappropriately. We report our results on the spectrum of chimera baryons in the (4) gauge theorywith hyperquarks transforming in fundamental and two-index antisymmetric representations. Forthis study, we adopt the quenched approximation. We investigate the mass hierarchy between thelightest chimera baryons with different quantum numbers, as a function of the lattice parameters.Inspired by baryon chiral effective field theory, and the Akaike Information Criterion, …

The Deconfinement Phase Transition In $Sp(2n)$ Gauge Theories And The Density Of States Method, David Mason, Biagio Lucini, Maurizio Piai, Enrico Rinaldi, Davide Vadacchino

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

First-order phase transitions in the early universe might produce a detectable background ofgravitational waves. As these phase transitions can be generated by new physics, it is importantto quantify these effects. Many pure Yang-Mills gauge theories are known to undergo first-orderdeconfinement phase transitions, with properties that can be studied with lattice simulations.Despite the recent surge of interest in (2) gauge theories as a candidate for models of physicsbeyond the standard model, studies of these theories at finite temperature are still very limited. Inthis contribution we will present preliminary results of an ongoing numerical investigation of thethermodynamic properties of the deconfinement phase …

Recent studies have shown that the noncoding genome can produce unannotated proteins as antigens that induce immune response. One major source of this activity is the aberrant epigenetic reactivation of transposable elements (TEs). In tumors, TEs often provide cryptic or alternate promoters, which can generate transcripts that encode tumor-specific unannotated proteins. Thus, TE-derived transcripts (TE transcripts) have the potential to produce tumor-specific, but recurrent, antigens shared among many tumors. Identification of TE-derived tumor antigens holds the promise to improve cancer immunotherapy approaches; however, current genomics and computational tools are not optimized for their detection. Here we combined CAGE technology with …

An Ensemble Dnn Model For Automatic Detection Of Covid-19 From Cxr Scans, Hagar Hesham Eldawoudy, Mohamed Abdelazim Mohamed, Eman Abdelhalim

Mansoura Engineering Journal

The new coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has been destructive to human life and has resulted in a significant number of deaths globally. Detecting COVID-19 as early as possible is a critical way to prohibit the virus from quickly passing among people. RT-PCR is a method used for COVID-19 detection, but it is very expensive and isn’t an accurate method due to its sensitivity of 60–70%. For these reasons, deep learning and imaging techniques are combined by doctors, scientific experts, and professionals for accurate and rapid COVID-19 detection. In this work, we propose a stacked ensemble model based on Linear Regression …

Aesthetics After The Ontological Turn: An Ecological Approach To Artificial Creativity, Miguel Carvalhais, Diniz C. Ribeiro Dec 2023

Aesthetics After The Ontological Turn: An Ecological Approach To Artificial Creativity, Miguel Carvalhais, Diniz C. Ribeiro

Critical Humanities

The development of chatbots and other generative systems powered by AI, particularly the latest version of ChatGPT, rekindled many discussions on topics such as intelligence and creativity, even leading some to suggest that we may be undergoing a “fourth narcissistic wound”. Starting from Margaret Boden’s approach to creativity, we will argue that if computational systems have always excelled at combinatorial creativity, current AI systems stand out at exploratory creativity but are perceived as still falling flat regarding transformational creativity. This paper explores some of the reasons for this, including how, despite the immensity of the conceptual space that results from …

Guilty Machines: On Ab-Sens In The Age Of Ai, Dylan Lackey, Katherine Weinschenk Dec 2023

Guilty Machines: On Ab-Sens In The Age Of Ai, Dylan Lackey, Katherine Weinschenk

Critical Humanities

For Lacan, guilt arises in the sublimation of ab-sens (non-sense) into the symbolic comprehension of sen-absexe (sense without sex, sense in the deficiency of sexual relation), or in the maturation of language to sensibility through the effacement of sex. Though, as Slavoj Žižek himself points out in a recent article regarding ChatGPT, the split subject always misapprehends the true reason for guilt’s manifestation, such guilt at best provides a sort of evidence for the inclusion of the subject in the order of language, acting as a necessary, even enjoyable mark of the subject’s coherence (or, more importantly, the subject’s separation …

On Chatgpt And The Forces And Relations Of Production, Matthew Rellihan Dec 2023

On Chatgpt And The Forces And Relations Of Production, Matthew Rellihan

Critical Humanities

ChatGPT and artificial intelligence more generally are transformative technologies capable of liberating humanity from the necessity of burdensome toil. Recent discussions have neglected this possibility because they suffer from the sorts of cognitive distortions catalogued by Marx and the Marxist tradition. Technology fetishism, understood on the model of commodity fetishism, occurs when the use and development allowed by a certain mode of production appear as intrinsic features of the technology itself. Naturalistic mystification occurs when the socially contingent use and development of these technologies is made to appear natural and therefore inevitable. To those suffering from either distortion, it will …

Llms And Crisis Epistemology: The Business Of Making Old Crises Seem New, Mich Ciurria Dec 2023

Llms And Crisis Epistemology: The Business Of Making Old Crises Seem New, Mich Ciurria

Critical Humanities

Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT have set in motion a series of crises. These include disruptions to the labor force, education, and democracy. Some people believe that rich technocratic ‘saviors’ should solve these crises. Naomi Klein, however, argues that this is a neoliberal fantasy. Tech CEOs will not solve AI-related crises because they have a vested interest in perpetuating disaster capitalism and the social inequalities that keep wages low. Who, then, can solve the AI crisis? I submit that the answer is: oppressed groups with experiential and intergenerational knowledge of crises. To oppressed folks, technological crises are not new, …

Massive Upper Gi Bleeding From Duodenal Invasion Of Hepatocellular Carcinoma Successfully Treated With Embolization And Hemospray®, Patrick Twohig, Erin Walsh, Amy Calderon

Graduate Medical Education Research Journal

Direct invasion of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) into the duodenum is a unique and life-threatening complication of HCC that has been rarely reported. A 60-year-old male with known HCC and cirrhosis presented with melena. Computed tomography of the abdomen and pelvis showed a 7cm hepatic mass abutting the duodenum. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy demonstrated a large, actively oozing mass in the duodenum treated with Hemospray® followed by transarterial embolization (TAE). Active upper gastrointestinal bleeding due to duodenal invasion of HCC can be successfully treated with Hemospray® Endoscopic Hemostat and TAE.

Prostatic Utricle Presenting As A Midline Scrotal Mass, Kaitlyn E. Schultis, Bryant Van Leeuwen, John Makari

Graduate Medical Education Research Journal

The prostatic utricle is a remnant of the Müllerian duct located within the verumontanum. An enlarged, clinically significant prostatic utricle has classically been associated with hypospadias. Prostatic utricles often present with persistent lower urinary tract symptoms, recurrent infections, and urinary incontinence. We present a prostatic utricle that presented as a scrotal mass concerning for rhabdomyosarcoma in a male with normal external genitalia.
