Examining The Potential Of Vitamin C Supplementation In Tissue-Engineered Equine Superficial Digital Flexor Tendon Constructs, Michael J Mienaltowski, Mitchell Callahan, Nicole L Gonzales, Angelique Wong

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Because equine tendinopathies are slow to heal and often recur, therapeutic strategies are being considered that aid tendon repair. Given the success of utilizing vitamin C to promote tenogenesis in other species, we hypothesized that vitamin C supplementation would produce dose-dependent improvements in the tenogenic properties of tendon proper (TP) and peritenon (PERI) cells of the equine superficial digital flexor tendon (SDFT). Equine TP- and PERI-progenitor-cell-seeded fibrin three-dimensional constructs were supplemented with four concentrations of vitamin C. The gene expression profiles of the constructs were assessed with 3'-Tag-Seq and real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR); collagen content and fibril ultrastructure …

Manifestly Unlawful: Why Russian Military Commanders Must Disobey A Nuclear Launch Order Against Ukraine, Christopher J. Hart Dec 2023

Manifestly Unlawful: Why Russian Military Commanders Must Disobey A Nuclear Launch Order Against Ukraine, Christopher J. Hart

International Law Studies

Applying the international legal framework governing the use of nuclear weapons to the facts of the war in Ukraine leads to a clear answer to the question of whether the use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine by Russia would be legal. While the 1996 International Court of Justice Advisory Opinion on the Threat or Use of Nuclear Weapons did not conclusively decide whether the use of nuclear weapons was per se illegal, by applying the legal framework articulated by the International Court of Justice to the facts of Russia’s war against Ukraine it is clear that any conceivable use of …

University Business Students As Charity Trustees: A Win-Win For All?, Carl Evans, Nigel Jackson Dec 2023

University Business Students As Charity Trustees: A Win-Win For All?, Carl Evans, Nigel Jackson

Plymouth Business School

Charities are facing a crisis in recruiting board trustees. Additionally, boards have been criticised for lacking diversity and being unrepresentative of society. The purpose of this paper is to propose a solution to the problem of trustee recruitment, by considering university business students as trustees. Through an analysis of advertised trustee jobs, the proposal is evaluated against degree subject benchmark statements. The findings identify some key person characteristics specified by charities when recruiting trustees. The generic criteria could be met by most students and many of the personal skills are developed by students while at university. However, to address some …

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications

Transport issues aim to determine the number of units that will be transferred from the production centers to consumption areas so that the cost of transportation is as low as possible, taking into account the conditions of supply and demand. Due to the great importance of these issues and to obtain more accurate results that take into account all circumstances, we conducted two research studies. In the first research, we presented a formulation of neutrosophic transport issues, and in the second research, we presented some ways to find a preliminary solution to these issues, but we do not know whether …

Prevalence, Faunal Composition, And Vertical Distribution Of Bioluminescence In The Pelagic Gulf Of Mexico: Fishes, Crustaceans, Cephalopods And Gelatinous Megaplankton, Devynne M. Brown

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

Bioluminescence is the phenomenon of light emission by living organisms. It occurs through a chemical reaction within an organism and serves various purposes. The diversity of bioluminescent capabilities and occurrence in unrelated taxa suggest that bioluminescence has evolved independently numerous times amongst taxa thriving in certain environments. One such environment is the deep ocean, where little to no sunlight penetrates the water column, specifically in the mesopelagic (200-1000 m depth) and bathypelagic (> 1000 m) zones. The mesopelagic and bathypelagic zones have been extensively sampled and well documented in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM), one of the few places globally …

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of The Internal Transcribed Sequences (Its) As Dna Barcodes To Estimate Fungal Diversity, Jailisa Linares Dec 2023

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of The Internal Transcribed Sequences (Its) As Dna Barcodes To Estimate Fungal Diversity, Jailisa Linares

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

Universal phylogenetic markers such as the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed sequences (ITS), specifically ITS1 and ITS2, are routinely used to estimate fungal diversity in environmental samples. However, numerous studies report differences in the performance and efficacy of ITS1 and ITS2 in documenting fungal diversity. To better understand the implications of using ITS1 versus ITS2, a comprehensive representation of the diverse fungal taxa was necessary to conduct a meta-analysis of their use across multiple fungal taxa. In order to address this, a thorough literature review was conducted to compare and contrast the use of ITS1 and ITS2 as effective DNA barcodes. …

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

The ability to resolve the dynamics of matter on its native temporal and spatial scales constitutes a key challenge and convergent theme across chemistry, biology, and materials science. The last couple of decades have witnessed ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) emerge as one of the forefront techniques with the sensitivity to resolve atomic motions. Increasingly sophisticated UED instruments are being developed that are aimed at increasing the beam brightness in order to observe structural signatures, but so far they have been limited to low average current beams. Here, we present the technical design and capabilities of the HiRES (High Repetition-rate Electron …

Traffic Monitoring System, Elizabeth Suda Dec 2023

Traffic Monitoring System, Elizabeth Suda

Honors Projects

The Traffic Monitoring System (TMS) was implemented at the Bowling Green Flight Center as a pre-planning traffic volume tool for flight instructors to utilize when deciding on a safe location for a training event. The TMS allows the instructor to pre-determine a location during the preflight planning stage that provides the best traffic separation, rather than finding out once airborne that an designated flight training area is overcrowded leading to greater collision hazards. The Traffic Management System has provided Bowling Green Flight Center pilots and instructors with greater situational awareness of traffic and increased safety margins in flight training.

Microwave-Photonic Vernier Effect Enabled High-Sensitivity Fiber Bragg Grating Sensors For Point-Wise And Quasi-Distributed Sensing, Chen Zhu, Osamah Alsalman, Jie Huang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper reports a sensitivity-improved fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor system based on microwave-photonic interferometry and the Vernier effect. an incoherent microwave photonics system based on a broadband light source is employed to interrogate the FBG sensor using the wavelength-to-delay mapping technique combined with interferometry. Specifically, the sensing FBG together with a reference FBG is used to construct a microwave photonics Michelson interferometer (MI). Changes in the Bragg wavelength of the sensing FBG subject to external perturbations are encoded into the spectral shifts of the microwave interferogram of the MI. a virtual interferometer is then generated from the sensing MI …

Structural Basis Of Gating In Msl Channels, Jingying Zhang Dec 2023

Structural Basis Of Gating In Msl Channels, Jingying Zhang

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

All living organisms experience exogenous and endogenous mechanical stress that are fundamental to their growth, survival, and development. A prominent strategy to manage these stresses and ensure efficient physiological responses is through mechanosensitive (MS) ion channels by transforming mechanical forces into electrochemical signaling. However, given their structural diversity and the inherent challenges of applying membrane tension during structural study, how MS channels sense mechanical force and transit into different functional states remain unclear. MSL channels in plants, members of the mechanosensitive ion channel of small conductance (MscS) superfamily, provide a compelling avenue for studying the structural basis for gating of …

This study surveyed the effect …

Bridge Deck Surface Damage Assessment Using Point Cloud Data, Issa Al Shaini, Adriana Trias Blanco Dec 2023

Bridge Deck Surface Damage Assessment Using Point Cloud Data, Issa Al Shaini, Adriana Trias Blanco

Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research

Bridge deck condition assessments are typically conducted through visual inspections and by incorporating traditional contact sensors for Non-Destructive Evaluation techniques such as hammer sounding and chain dragging, which require the keen expertise of trained inspectors. The accuracy of these inspections is proportional to the level of deterioration of the bridge deck, as the ability of the inspectors is correlated to the apparent level of damage. This study aims to improve the accuracy of bridge deck inspection processes by utilizing non-destructive evaluation techniques, including analyzing point cloud data gathered via Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) as a geometry-capturing tool for identifying …
