Student-Led Health Promotion Toolkit: A Practice Development Project, R Reynolds, S Neill Jan 2023

Student-Led Health Promotion Toolkit: A Practice Development Project, R Reynolds, S Neill

School of Nursing and Midwifery

Student nurses are uniquely placed to contribute to health promotion during their undergraduate programmes. The aim of this practice development project was to co-develop a toolkit to facilitate student nurse led health promotion practice. The project used an emancipatory methodology to explore health promotion practice opportunities for one university cohort of student nurses in partnership with the local practice area. A person-centred framework was used to engage with students and nurses to benchmark current student practice, scope for student-led activity and develop a shared vision for the toolkit resources. The student questionnaire revealed greater confidence in health promotion knowledge than …

This study aims to describe end-of-life (EOL) care in older patients with cancer and investigate the association between geriatric assessment (GA) results and specialized palliative care (SPC) use. Older patients with a new cancer diagnosis (2009–2015) originally included in a previous multicentric study were selected if they died before the end of follow-up (2019). At the time of cancer diagnosis, patients underwent geriatric screening with Geriatric 8 (G8) followed by GA in case of a G8 score ≤14/17. These data were linked to the cancer registry and healthcare reimbursement data for follow-up. EOL care was assessed in the last three …

The Influence Of An English Mediating Translation In Translating The Malayalam Novel Chemmeen Into French, Thomas Shyla Jan 2023

The Influence Of An English Mediating Translation In Translating The Malayalam Novel Chemmeen Into French, Thomas Shyla

Student Works (2020-2029)

The classic Malayalam novel Chemmeen written by Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai in 1956 was a best seller of its period and hence was translated into about 25 different languages. Its English translation was done by Narayana Menon (1962) during the post-colonial period and a French translation, Un amour indien (1965) was produced based on the English version. Menon’s English version which was not a close translation of the original thus served as the mediating text (MT) for the French translation. The French version therefore reveals a range of pragmatic differences in comparison with the original novel in Malayalam. The first objective …

This thesis investigates the impact of financial integration on the capital structure of the firms operating in 22 emerging countries listed in the MSCI Index. The main objective of this study is to determine the level of integration that has the strongest influence on the financing decisions of the firms and their maturity. For this purpose, we examine a large sample of unbalanced data of firm-level and country-level integrating variables for 9563 firms over the period of twenty-six years i.e. 1990 – 2015. The study also uses some institutional factors like the law and level of corruption that affects the …

The Effect Of Self-Perineal Care Education On Knowledge, Episiotomy Pain And Wound Healing Among Primipara Mothers, G.P Lazarus Lilly Mary

Student Works (2020-2029)

A nurse-midwife ensures all mothers receive the best care to be safe and healthy throughout pregnancy and childbirth. However, it is challenging for midwives to provide holistic nursing care as postpartum mothers spend only a brief period in the postnatal ward due to the high demand for the facilities there. The primary objective of this study was to investigate the effect of self-perineal care education (SPC education) on knowledge, episiotomy pain, and wound healing outcomes among primipara mothers and explore their opinions regarding self-perineal care education and their challenges and practices at home. Mixed-methods research using the embedded design was …

Student Works (2020-2029)

This thesis aims to study the phase change characteristic of Ge2Sb2Se4Te1 (GSST) using 1550 nm pulsed laser as excitation source, and to explore its potential in multilevel nonvolatile photonic memory application. Firstly, the amorphous to crystalline state phase transition of GSST using 1550 nm pulsed laser as optical excitation source is investigated. The threshold laser pulse duration to achieve crystallization are 190 ns, 140 ns, 100 ns and 70 ns for laser intensities of 0.46 GW/cm2, 0.61 GW/cm2, 0.76 GW/cm2 and 0.85 GW/cm2, respectively. However, it is found that the phase change tolerance of GSST is very stringent (phase transition …

Low-Fidelity Design Optimization And Parameter Sensitivity Analysis Of Tilt-Rotor Evtol Electric Propulsion Systems, Tyler Critchfield, Andrew Ning Jan 2023

Low-Fidelity Design Optimization And Parameter Sensitivity Analysis Of Tilt-Rotor Evtol Electric Propulsion Systems, Tyler Critchfield, Andrew Ning

Faculty Publications

Urban air mobility requires a multidisciplinary approach to tackle the important chal- lenges facing the design of these aircraft. This work uses low-to-mid fidelity tools to model rotor aerodynamics, blade structures, vehicle aerodynamics, and electric propulsion for a tilt-rotor electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. We use gradient-based design optimization and extensive parameter sensitivity analysis to explore the design space and complex tradeoffs of tilt-rotor distributed electric propulsion systems.

Aerostructural Predictions Combining Fenics And A Viscous Vortex Particle Method, Ryan Anderson, Andrew Ning, Ru Xiang, Sebastiaan P. C. Van Schie, Mark Sperry, Darshan Sarojini, David Kamensky, John T. Hwang

Faculty Publications

Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft experience complex, unsteady aerodynamic interactions between rotors, wings, and fuselage that can make design difficult. We introduce a new framework for predicting aerostructural interactions. Specifically, we demonstrate the coupling of a finite element solver with Reissner-Mindlin shell theory for computing deflections and a viscous vortex particle for capturing wakes. We perform convergence studies of the aerodynamics and the coupled aerostructural model. Finally, we share some preliminary results of the dynamic aeroelastic response of Uber’s eCRM-002 main wing, and share some qualitative observations.

Isogeometric Boundary-Conforming Body-In-White Crash Model Construction, Analysis, And Comparison With Fem Model, Kendrick M. Shepherd Jan 2023

Isogeometric Boundary-Conforming Body-In-White Crash Model Construction, Analysis, And Comparison With Fem Model, Kendrick M. Shepherd

Faculty Publications

In this paper, we discuss model generation to rebuild the body-in-white of a 1996 Dodge Neon finite element model into a isogeometric conforming analysis-suitable crash model. We then perform the first known boundary-fit isogeometric body-in-white crash analysis of the vehicle and compare results achieved by traditional finite element methods. Results indicate the value and potential of high-order meshes in analysis.

For centuries, humans occupying arid regions of North America have maintained an intricate relationship with Agave (Agavoideae, Asparagaceae). Today Agave cultivation, primarily for beverage production, provides an economic engine for rural communities throughout Mexico. Among known dryland-farming methods, the use of rock piles and cattle-grazed areas stand out as promising approaches for Agave cultivation. Identifying new cultivation areas to apply these approaches in Arizona, USA and Sonora, Mexico warrants a geographic assessment of areas outside the known ranges of rock piles and grasslands. The objective of this study was to predict areas for dryland-farming of Agave and develop models to …

Genomic Data From Paquimé: Understanding The Cultural And Genetic Ties Of The Site, Meradeth Snow, Michael Seary, Jakob Sedig, Jose Luis Punzo-Diaz

Faculty Publications

Paquimé, located in the Casas Grandes region of Northern Mexico, presents a rich cultural tradition with ties to populations to the South and North. Ancient mitochondrial DNA from Paquime’s occupants has not provided evidence of large-scale in-migration that led to the fluorescence of the site, as some scholars have hypothesized. This paper focuses on nuclear genomes that have been sequenced for 20+ Paquimé individuals, further demonstrating the complexity of the region and of the city. The emerging data (collected with approval from the Mexican Consejo de Arqueología) presents a clearer view both of the population’s genetic relationships with those to …
