Resonance Raman Spectra And Excited State Properties Of Methyl Viologen And Its Radical Cation From Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory, Umut Ozuguzel, Adelia J.A. Aquino, Reed Nieman, Shelley D. Minteer, Carol Korzeniewski

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) was applied to gain insights into the electronic and vibrational spectroscopic properties of an important electron transport mediator, methyl viologen (MV2+). an organic dication, MV2+ has numerous applications in electrochemistry that include energy conversion and storage, environmental remediation, and chemical sensing and electrosynthesis. MV2+ is easily reduced by a single electron transfer to form a radical cation species (MV•+), which has an intense UV–visible absorption near 600 nm. the redox properties of the MV2+/MV•+ couple and light-sensitivity of MV•+ have made the system appealing for photo-electrochemical energy conversion (e.g., solar hydrogen generation from water) and …

Abstract Statement of the Problem: This study aimed to understand the impact of exposure to ACEs in childhood on college attainment in adulthood and if safe, stable, and nurturing relationships (SSNRs) in childhood mitigate the risks of exposure to trauma through a contextual lens by exploring results by race/ethnicity and gender. Research: Exposure to adverse and traumatic experiences in childhood can adversely impact learning, behavior, and health outcomes throughout the lifespan (Shonkoff et al., 2012). Supportive adults that provide SSNRs can buffer adverse childhood events and help foster children’s resiliency by buffering or eliminating risk factors. Research has been limited …

Bach's Chaconne, Bwv 1004: A Guide To Historically Informed Performance, Christina Volz-Stomackin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

In this dissertation I have decided to explore, from a historical perspective, a piece of music that is well-known to many violinists: J.S. Bach’s masterpiece, the Chaconne from Partita no. 2 in D minor. My goal is for this to be an informative and accessible resource for modern performers who may be interested in experimenting with historical performance practices in their approach to Bach and to Baroque music in general. I have chosen to focus my discussion on Bach’s Chaconne because of the wide-ranging scope of the movement, which affords opportunities for variety and depth in the topics I wish …

Experimental Investigation Of Temperature Polarisation By Capturing The Temperature Profile Development Over Dcmd Membranes, Hiras Ahamed Hijaz, Masoumeh Zargar, Abdellah Shafieian, Amir Razmjou, Mehdi Khiadani

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Temperature polarisation (TP) is a major drawback limiting the global acceptance of membrane distillation (MD) technology. TP is typically quantified using a dimensionless index known as Temperature Polarisation Coefficient (TPC). TPC has significant limitations, whereby it cannot be used to compare different MD configurations or design conditions, nor to analyse the TP phenomenon along the membrane. In this research, the temperature profile over and along a lengthy DCMD membrane has been measured under various operational conditions, where its impact on TP has been explored for the first time. A specialised DCMD membrane cell was manufactured to capture temperature profiles, both …

Deep Learning-Enabled Breast Cancer Endocrine Response Determination From H&E Staining Based On Esr1 Signaling Activity, Chun Wai Ng, Kwong-Kwok Wong

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Estrogen receptor (ER) positivity by immunohistochemistry has long been a main selection criterium for breast cancer patients to be treated with endocrine therapy. However, ER positivity might not directly correlate with activated ER signaling activity, which is a better predictor for endocrine therapy responsiveness. In this study, we investigated if a deep learning method using whole-slide H&E-stained images could predict ER signaling activity. First, ER signaling activity score was determined using RNAseq data available from each of the 1082 breast cancer samples in the TCGA Pan-Cancer dataset based on the Hallmark Estrogen Response Early gene set from the Molecular Signature …

Art399 Portfolio, Thomas Townsend Jr

Professional Practices (ART 399)

When I was young I wasn't much into art. I liked doing my owns thing and looking at cool images and colors that grabbed my attention, now really understanding that I actually liked art. The way I really knew how to communicate my feelings was to draw them out since I struggled verbally expressing them. I really didn't know exactly what I was doing but I was drawing or doing other creative ways to express the way I was feeling at the moment to others. Sometimes to this day I still do that but I'm at lot better at expressing …

Professional Practices (ART 399)

Aside from the aesthetics of cartoons and video games that I was attracted to in childhood; other influences that often guide where works would go are personal experiences, our connection with nature and others, the development of the imagination, and the human eye. The pieces made from that influence contain something tied back to others, whether it is the use of various warm/cool hues, the use of nature and flowers, colorful clothing on figures, or hands and legs being slightly longer than the rest of a figure’s proportions. Artists like Yayoi Kusama, Bonnie Seeman, and Hayao Miyazaki have also impacted …

Professional Practices (ART 399)

A plethora of my artwork is based on imaginary animals and their role in reality or fantasy. I utilize pencil and charcoal to add depth and feeling to the piece whether it is colored or monochromatic. To make the drawings, I first gather some ideas from creatures from mythology or the virtual landscape and add some features of my own design. This passion for capturing creatures, real or fictional, can utilize their unusual adaptations from a scientific point of view as a way to merge two of my interests. I have always been fascinated by animals, especially mythical ones or …

Professional Practices (ART 399)

Since a young age, my art has been a proper channel in which it allows me to express my own lived experiences by visually processing the thoughts and emotions that are made through everyday living. The process in which art is made deepens the understanding of oneself. Why I bring into existence art is why I exist. One of the most important influences to the creation of my works is the fact that I am transgender. The way in which I exist in the world as well as the relationships created are also influenced by this aspect. As I continue …

Amber Ryan Final Portfolio, Amber E. Ryan

Professional Practices (ART 399)

My personal journey and the lived experience of women in society inspire my work. I speak to my own experiences and thoughts as a woman. I force people into a place of discomfort, causing them to think deeply about how society speaks to women and what is taught to us from birth, leaving them with thoughts that linger long after they have walked away. This gives them a window into my intrusive thoughts, traumas, and emotions. The Tulip Field speaks to the manner in which society deals with the sex industry and sex workers today as opposed to how they …

Teacher, Gatekeeper, Or Team Member: Supervisor Positioning In Programmatic Assessment, Janica Jamieson, Simone Gibson, Margaret Hay, Claire Palermo

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Competency-based assessment is undergoing an evolution with the popularisation of programmatic assessment. Fundamental to programmatic assessment are the attributes and buy-in of the people participating in the system. Our previous research revealed unspoken, yet influential, cultural and relationship dynamics that interact with programmatic assessment to influence success. Pulling at this thread, we conducted secondary analysis of focus groups and interviews (n = 44 supervisors) using the critical lens of Positioning Theory to explore how workplace supervisors experienced and perceived their positioning within programmatic assessment. We found that supervisors positioned themselves in two of three ways. First, supervisors universally positioned themselves …

Alarm With Care-A De-Implementation Strategy To Reduce Fall Prevention Alarm Use In Us Hospitals: A Study Protocol For A Hybrid 2 Effectiveness-Implementation Trial., Kea Turner, Molly Mcnett, Catima Potter, Emily Cramer, Mona Al Taweel, Ronald I. Shorr, Lorraine C. Mion

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

BACKGROUND: Fall prevention alarms are commonly used among US hospitals as a fall prevention strategy despite limited evidence of effectiveness. Further, fall prevention alarms are harmful to healthcare staff (e.g., alarm fatigue) and patients (e.g., sleep disturbance, mobility restriction). There is a need for research to develop and test strategies for reducing use of fall prevention alarms in US hospitals.

METHODS: To address this gap, we propose testing the effectiveness and implementation of Alarm with Care, a de-implementation strategy to reduce fall prevention alarm use using a stepped-wedge randomized controlled trial among 30 adult medical or medical surgical units from …
