The Integration Of Nouns From English And Kiswahili Into The Grammar Of Datooga Language Spoken In Tanzania, Kuria Mdoe Michael

Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

This article shows both the contact of English and Kiswahili with Datooga and how noun loans from the two languages are nativized in Datooga. Through elicitation, extraction from oral narrations and reviewing existing documents, English and Kiswahili noun loans were identified in Datooga. The article shows that, regardless of their source, loanwords from the two languages are all integrated into the Datooga noun structure in a uniform way. Phonologically, the loanwords are nativized through replacement of foreign sound with a native sound that has almost similar features in the recipient language, voicing of foreign sounds, vowel heightening and the change …

Reporting From The Angle Of Reality: A Comparative Analysis Of Sukuma Proverbs And The Social Construction Of Power Relations In Traditional Leadership, Esther Masele

Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

The Sukuma comprise one of many ethnic groups which respect their traditional leadership. Even after the introduction of new authority by the independent Tanzanian government, they still exercise their traditional leadership of chiefs (Ntemi), which is purely patriarchal. However, there are more evidences from the literature, which suggest that proverbs are useful in articulating power relations in groups as what persist in the Sukuma society. Following this reason, this paper, highlights power relations resulting from the comparative analysis of traditional leadership history and Sukuma proverbs. Specifically, the paper is designed to answer two questions: How does the Sukuma traditional leadership …

Intricacies Of Translating Children’S Books In Tanzania, Mpale Silkiluwasha

Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

This paper interrogates the complexities that come with translating picture books in Tanzania between 2001 and 2012. A sample of four tittles written in both Kiswahili and English that are available in bookstores were selected for study. It was important that the study should involve books available in bookstores in Tanzania to ensure that these books are functional, hence making the study useful and applicable. The polysystem theory is employed to build the framework for analysing the peripheral position that Tanzanian children literature may occupy at both the national and global systems, while the Hermeneutics methodology aid in the study …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Tropical marine ecosystems provide a wide range of provisioning, regulating, supporting and cultural services to millions of people. They also largely contribute to blue carbon sequestration. Mangroves, seaweeds, and seagrass habitats are important because they store large amounts of organic carbon while fish play a fundamental role in the carbon transport to deep waters. Protecting and restoring tropical marine ecosystems is of great value to society because their decline impairs the vital services they provide, such as coastal protection and seafood supplies. In this marine policy paper, we present options for enhancing blue carbon sequestration in tropical coastal areas. In …

Although entrepreneurship training programs are designed to help necessity entrepreneurs acquire skills and capabilities to take entrepreneurial action, participants in these programs often fail to do so. In partnership with a local government agency, we conducted a randomized field experiment involving 165 entrepreneurs in rural Tanzania where in addition to providing technical-skills training, approximately half of the participants also received ‘growth mindset’ psychological training. Those who received the growth mindset training displayed more entrepreneurial action in their business than those in the control group. Importantly, higher levels of entrepreneurial self efficacy mediated the positive impact on entrepreneurial action displayed by …

Why Democracies And Autocracies Go To War: Comparing The Cases Of Iraq And Ukraine, Ketevan Chincharadze Jun 2023

Why Democracies And Autocracies Go To War: Comparing The Cases Of Iraq And Ukraine, Ketevan Chincharadze

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

History shows that both democratic and nondemocratic countries wage wars to advance their strategic interests. This study has comparatively analyzed two conflicts – the 2003-2011 U.S. invasion of Iraq and Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine – to identify the trends that motivate both democratic and autocratic leaders to behave similarly by launching an invasion. The interpretive research of various memoirs, books, interviews, academic articles, news reports, and speeches, has uncovered that personal biases, particularly confirmation biases, play a significant role in motivating leaders to start a war. Leaders’ confirmation biases are often shaped by three prominent factors – historical memory, …

Background: Baseline stroke severity is probably partly responsible for poor stroke outcomes in sub-Saharan Africa. However, there is a paucity of information on determinants of stroke severity among indigenous Africans. We sought to identify the factors associated with stroke severity among West Africans in the SIREN (Stroke Investigative Research and Educational Networks) study.

Methods and Results: Stroke was diagnosed clinically and confirmed with brain neuroimaging. Severe stroke was defined as a Stroke Levity Scale score of ≤5. A multivariate logistic regression model was constructed to identify factors associated with stroke severity at 95% CI and a nominal cutoff of 5% …

Agricultural Shocks On Household Stability: A Case Study Of Tanzania Maize Farmers, Zimmi Silonda Ndlovu

Master's Theses

As the global populations grow, the need for stronger agricultural resilience in areas with high food insecurity like Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is a must. Crop failure due to climate related events has increased substantially over the past decade, raising the risks to vulnerable groups like subsistence farmers. Understanding the effects of climate variability on farmers and their crops is a pivotal step towards increasing resilience and productivity. In this paper I approach this question using a Linear Probability Fixed-effects Model on Tanzanian Panel Survey data with monthly temperature and precipitation for years 2008 to 2013. Identification And Quantification Of Allelochemicals Associated With Weed Suppression In Sweetpotato, Varsha Varsha May 2023

Identification And Quantification Of Allelochemicals Associated With Weed Suppression In Sweetpotato, Varsha Varsha

Theses and Dissertations

Mississippi ranks among the leading states in sweetpotato production in the US. However, managing weeds in sweetpotato fields presents a significant challenge, and the limited availability of herbicides labeled for use in sweetpotato makes it even more challenging. The widespread and repeated use of herbicides has led to the development of weed resistance. In addition, herbicides are incompatible with the organic production system. Finding sustainable weed management strategies to provide weed control options for organic cultivation and detain the development of herbicide-resistant weeds under conventional crop production is imperative. The natural chemicals released by the plants, also called allelochemicals, can …

Integrated Neutrosophic Best-Worst Method For Comprehensive Analysis And Ranking Of Flood Risks: A Case Study Approach From Aswan, Egypt, Safa Al-Saeed, Nabil M. Abdelaziz

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications

This paper presents a comprehensive framework for the analysis and ranking of flood risks with respect to regional variations and data uncertainties under a Neutrosophic environment. The research introduces a novel approach to flood risk mitigation and management, bringing together the scientifically robust Best-Worst Method (BWM) and single-valued Neutrosophic set for the first time. The unique application of a single-valued Neutrosophic set allows us to better illustrate and manage uncertainty, imprecision, and vagueness in data. Additionally, we employ BWM, a multi-factor decision-making method, for discerning and ranking the most influential flood risk factors. Together, the integrated methodologies provide a balanced, …

The Intercultural Communicative Meaning Of The Life Of Igbo Diaspora, Judith I. Udechukwu May 2023

The Intercultural Communicative Meaning Of The Life Of Igbo Diaspora, Judith I. Udechukwu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In his novel, Heart of Darkness, Joseph Conrad describes the African continent as “the heart of darkness” and frames African cultural heritage as barbaric, uncivilized, outlandish and backwards.[1] Unfortunately, this view represents the position of many European scholars who consider these cultures as inimical to civilization. However, in the contemporary era, intercultural communication, postcolonial studies, globalization, and decolonization of methodology have proved the negative western portrayal of Africa and its traditions as wrong and can no longer adequately address the complexities of African culture. Thus, the postcolonial African studies from the perspective of Chinua Achebe challenges the colonial narrative …

Determinants Of The Decision To Adopt Climate Change Adaptation Strategies Among Smallholder Upland Farmers In Southeast Asia, Leila D. Landicho, Nam Le Van, Agusthino Ximenes May 2023

Determinants Of The Decision To Adopt Climate Change Adaptation Strategies Among Smallholder Upland Farmers In Southeast Asia, Leila D. Landicho, Nam Le Van, Agusthino Ximenes

Forest and Society

This article argues that local adaptive capacity of the smallholder farmers determines their decision to adopt climate change adaptation strategies in the upland farming communities in the Philippines. This argument is based on the research conducted in the selected upland farming communities in the Philippines, Vietnam and Timor-Leste in 2017-2018 using the Local Adaptive Capacity (LAC) framework as the theoretical foundation. The study involved a survey of 637 upland farmers who were selected using simple random sampling; focus group discussion; key informant interviews; and, farm visits. Results revealed that the smallholder farmers across the three countries had low level of …

School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa

The growing demand for donated whole blood and blood products to save lives has both health benefits and health risks for blood recipients at the same time. Dengue virus, a re-emerging viral disease poses a threat to blood safety, and it has spread to over 128 countries in the world. Several studies have documented transfusion-transmitted (TT) dengue, with the first cases being reported in China in 2002 and Singapore in 2008. To understand the magnitude and broader picture of the dengue virus and blood safety, we conducted a mini-review of published literature from the Scopus database. The review focused on …

Maternal Health In The Context Of Social, Political, And Economic Change Among Hadzabe Foragers Of Tanzania, Kristen Herlosky May 2023

Maternal Health In The Context Of Social, Political, And Economic Change Among Hadzabe Foragers Of Tanzania, Kristen Herlosky

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Many low and middle-income countries have implemented new national policy measures aimed at reducing maternal morbidity and mortality due to globalized efforts to improve women’s maternal health. One of the main goals is to move childbirth into hospital facilities and improve health access and education outreach. For Indigenous communities around the world, these measures have fallen short of their goals. Indigenous women suffer from greater social, political, and economic disparities and inequalities, have poorer health indicators overall, and worse maternal health outcomes compared to their non-Indigenous counterparts. For small-scale communities, we have limited data on reproductive health among women, specifically …

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

The primary goal of this two-part project is to answer the rhetorical question of which strokes should be taught first, and which later (Langendorfer, 2013, Stallman, 2014a). As you have seen in Part One, we emphasize (as have many others) the need for a firm foundation before any stroke is introduced. When the learner is ready for propulsive motor competencies, there is no stroke which suits all as their first. In Part One we explored the “beginning strokes” all of which are candidates for any given learner’s first stroke. We also argued that after mastering their very first stroke the …

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

The aim of this article is to address the familiar question “Which swimming stroke should be taught first?” The discussion is usually focused on breaststroke versus crawl. Provoked by these naïve discussions of which stroke should be taught first (as if stroking equals swimming, which it emphatically does NOT), the question was answered metaphorically in an earlier article “No Stroke First – All Strokes First” (Stallman, 2008a). Here in Part I we identify and describe six strokes, all of which might be a candidate for any learners ‘very first’ stroke. We describe them as beginning strokes. Having identified and learned …
