Erosion: Landscape Reveals Us, John Alexander Mcbride Jan 2023

Erosion: Landscape Reveals Us, John Alexander Mcbride

Dance (MFA) Theses

This thesis explores the connective tissue between the land on which we stand and the body we inhabit. Through the lens of climate change and erosion, this research unveils the lasting effects of severe and traumatic weather patterns on the psychology and physiology of those who continue to endure them. How bodies (capitalistic bodies, collective bodies, and our personal bodies) treat the land and each other affects us all—we are all part of the eroding ecosystem, linked together by the soil beneath our feet. The soil that has been scorched and stolen, mined and massacred. The soil that is fertile …

Queering Empathy, Robert Wesner Jan 2023

Queering Empathy, Robert Wesner

Dance (MFA) Theses

This research is an exploration of personal utopia by locating oneself within the worlds of dance and dance studies, deconstructing past lived experiences where queer futurity presents itself, and connecting them with present and future realities. The critical research manifests within a practice of reconstructing a non-linear understanding of one’s personhood. Creating artwork and sculpture, songwriting, editing dance and dance on film, and exploring the self as a partner of each medium reveals a greater sense of physical, emotional, and social structures that allow, inhibit, or deny one their place historically. Investigating one’s agency and personal autonomy, and the lack …

The Disabled Lens: Viewing Gender Performance, Dorian Marr Jan 2023

The Disabled Lens: Viewing Gender Performance, Dorian Marr

Dean James E. McLeod Freshman Writing Prize

Black Metal, Trauma, Subjectivity and Sound: Screaming the Abyss is Jasmine Shadrack’s performance autoethnography—in this, she explains her experiences and the sociocultural phenomena that shaped them through the lens of her black metal career. She focuses on her role as guitarist and frontwoman of black metal band Denigrata. Shadrack’s onstage persona is Denigrata Herself, which allows her to experiment with her gender presentation and portray aspects of her trauma and disabilities in a way she is comfortable with. As the pain from her complex post-traumatic stress disorder (C-PTSD) and fibromyalgia increased, Shadrack eventually had to leave Denigrata. Due to her …

Pict-Dpa: A Quality-Compliance Data Processing Architecture To Improve The Performance Of Integrated Emergency Care Clinical Decision Support System, Ruizhi Yu Jan 2023

Pict-Dpa: A Quality-Compliance Data Processing Architecture To Improve The Performance Of Integrated Emergency Care Clinical Decision Support System, Ruizhi Yu

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Emergency Care System (ECS) is a critical component of health care systems by providing acute resuscitation and life-saving care. As a time-sensitive care operation system, any delay and mistake in the decision-making of these EC functions can create additional risks of adverse events and clinical incidents. The Emergency Care Clinical Decision Support System (EC-CDSS) has proven to improve the quality of the aforementioned EC functions. However, the literature is scarce on how to implement and evaluate the EC-CDSS with regard to the improvement of PHOs, which is the ultimate goal of ECS. The reasons are twofold: 1) lack of clear …

Effectiveness Of Ondansetron Prior To Spinal Anesthesia In Obese Parturients Undergoing Caesarean Delivery, Peter O. Lind Jan 2023

Effectiveness Of Ondansetron Prior To Spinal Anesthesia In Obese Parturients Undergoing Caesarean Delivery, Peter O. Lind

Nurse Anesthesia MSNA Student Capstones

Spinal anesthesia is the preferred route of anesthesia for parturients undergoing casesarean section (Hawkins et al., 2011). Parturients with obesity undergo caesarean delivery and have higher rates of initial intrathecal failure comparatively to non-obese (Hood, et al, 2015). Obesity is on the rise leading to a reconsideration as to the dosing of spinal anesthetic type (Dennis, 2017). Historically, the utilization of ondansetron, as a selective 5-HT3 antagonist, has been utilized prior to spinal administration to prevent the sympathectomy that can occur (Sahoo et al., 2012). This has decreased the utilization of vasopressors which can be detrimental to the fetus during …

Can You See Me Now?: A Critical Examination Of The Progression, Reception, And Impact Of Performances Of The Body As A Mechanism For Critiquing & Transcending Social Constructs In The West, Lauren Spencer Jan 2023

Can You See Me Now?: A Critical Examination Of The Progression, Reception, And Impact Of Performances Of The Body As A Mechanism For Critiquing & Transcending Social Constructs In The West, Lauren Spencer

CMC Senior Theses

Beginning with Adolf Loos’s famous “Ornament and Crime” essay, I examine the progression, reception and impact of performances of the body using Amelia Jones’ framework for distinguishing body art from performance art. As Primitivist Modernism became popular in the West, racialized bodies garnered new attention as subjects of both inspiration and criticism. Through a critical exploration of Black artists, I determine that the use of bodily performances aided in the subversion of the gender, sexual, and racial discrimination perpetuated by Primitivist Modernism and continued into the 21st century. Starting with French icon Josephine Baker and concluding with American legend Janet …

The Ilm Industrial Complex: Star Wars And Vfx In The Digital Age, Jane Baldwin Jan 2023

The Ilm Industrial Complex: Star Wars And Vfx In The Digital Age, Jane Baldwin

CMC Senior Theses

This paper proposes an expansion of Tom Gunning’s seminal theory of the “cinema of attractions.” Advancements in visual effects (VFX) technologies—such as the rise of George Lucas’ Industrial Light and Magic (ILM) and the advent of the digital age, among others—necessitate a more rigorous, updated understanding of effects as objects of media study. Using the Star Wars franchise as an analytical center, I aim to bring the subfield of effects study closer to compatibility with the ever-evolving VFX landscape.

Movement As Medicine: Dance/Movement Therapy For Individuals With Autism, Parkinson’S Disease, And Cancer, Alessia Zanobini Jan 2023

Movement As Medicine: Dance/Movement Therapy For Individuals With Autism, Parkinson’S Disease, And Cancer, Alessia Zanobini

CMC Senior Theses

Dance/movement therapy (D/MT) is the psychotherapeutic use of expressive, creative movement to support holistic well-being. D/MT views the human being as a single body-mind unit and movement as a manifestation of life experiences. While typically practiced as a mental health intervention, D/MT can be adapted for a variety of populations. This thesis evaluates scientific data for the non-traditional use of D/MT for three conditions: autism, Parkinson’s disease, and cancer. For individuals on the autism spectrum, D/MT can strengthen attunement skills, provide creative communication outlets, and relieve harmful physical manifestations of autism. For individuals with Parkinson’s disease, D/MT can simultaneously ease …

A Mixed Method Comparison: Instruction In Undergraduate Beginning, Intermediate, And Advanced Contemporary Dance Classes, Aditi Bheda Jan 2023

A Mixed Method Comparison: Instruction In Undergraduate Beginning, Intermediate, And Advanced Contemporary Dance Classes, Aditi Bheda

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

This study aimed to identify the nature of instructional differences between beginning, intermediate and advanced contemporary dance classes. The study involved interviewing two dance instructors and observing their classes, as well as conducting focus group discussions to gain insight from students. Despite difficulties in comparing across three levels given that no single instructor was observed teaching all three levels, the mixed method comparison yielded some common themes at each dance level. Given that students at higher levels were more aware of and comfortable with their bodies, instructors moved through the class at a quicker pace. Students at each level were …

Renewing Educational Autonomy, Johanna Kalb Jan 2023

Renewing Educational Autonomy, Johanna Kalb

SMU Law Review

American colleges and universities are facing an unprecedented wave of state legislative actions calling into question the freedom that these institutions have long enjoyed, as well as their ability to serve increasingly diverse student populations. Current constitutional protections for academic freedom under the First Amendment are proving an inadequate defense from these types of incursions. This Article argues for a reexamination and reinvigoration of a constitutional theory of educational autonomy protected by substantive due process, drawing on both the pre-colonial models that informed the creation of American colleges, as well as the earliest cases involving state efforts to control them. …

Individual Home-Work Assignments For State Taxes, Hayes R. Holderness Jan 2023

Individual Home-Work Assignments For State Taxes, Hayes R. Holderness

Law Faculty Publications

The surge in work-from-home arrangements brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic threatens serious disruptions to state tax systems. Billions of dollars are at stake at this pivotal moment as states grapple with where to assign income earned through these remote work arrangements for tax purposes: the worker’s home or the employer’s location? States intent on modernizing their income tax laws by assigning such income to the employer’s location have faced persistent challenges on both constitutional and policy grounds.

This Article provides a vigorous defense against such challenges. The Supreme Court has long interpreted the Constitution to be deferential to state …

The Effect Of Different Warm-Up Durations On Subjective And Objective Measures Of Singing In Choral Singers Over The Age Of 55, Jeremy A. Chesman Jan 2023

The Effect Of Different Warm-Up Durations On Subjective And Objective Measures Of Singing In Choral Singers Over The Age Of 55, Jeremy A. Chesman

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Choral singing is a popular activity in the United States. Choral singers are often encouraged to warm up vocally before they sing. Considering voice conditions, like presbyphonia, that can develop shortly after retirement, more research about vocal warm-ups is needed for those over the age of 55. This study assesses the effects of various durations of vocal warm-ups on subjective and objective measures of the singing voice using a within-groups design with randomized condition order. Nine participants performed vocal warm-ups for 0, 5, 10, and 15 minutes. A song sample was then recorded and sent to two expert raters who …

Student Perspectives Of Music Courses In A Southwest Missouri School District: An Exploratory Case Study, Mary Elisa Wren Jan 2023

Student Perspectives Of Music Courses In A Southwest Missouri School District: An Exploratory Case Study, Mary Elisa Wren

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate student personal perspectives (grades 8-12) of music courses, their value, and what music courses they might choose or recommend. Numerous researchers and educators have debated and researched how music course offerings and instructional approaches used are central to the relevance, inclusiveness, accessibility, and equity in music education (Abramo, 2011; Clauhs & Cremata, 2020; Cooper, 2013; Green, 2006; Kelly & Heath, 2015). However, few researchers have investigated how students think about the motivations and barriers to different types of music courses. A semi-structured interview was used to explore secondary music students’ (a) perceptions, …

Winston, The World's Fastest Turtle: Puppet As Audience Surrogate, Gage Schlueter Jan 2023

Winston, The World's Fastest Turtle: Puppet As Audience Surrogate, Gage Schlueter

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Puppetry is a special effect- media magic that enhances the flavor of a fictional world. My dream is to harness that magic in order to teach preschoolers about their physical world. Puppets have a unique ability to provide an analogue that children can relate to, which makes them an incredibly effective and engaging vehicle for educational entertainment. My Senior Honors Creative Project is the culmination of studies in childrens’ theatre, media production, and early childhood education at Eastern Michigan University. The goal of this project was to create an original puppet design that could act as surrogate to my future …

Stereotype Threat Within The Lgbtq+ Community, Chloe Laporte Jan 2023

Stereotype Threat Within The Lgbtq+ Community, Chloe Laporte

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

This study examined stereotype threat for students from the LGBTQ+ community. Stereotype threat can cause negative effects regarding performance and can influence the expression of social behaviors. This project observed differences between LGBTQ+ and non-LGBTQ+ identifying groups who believe the study tests performance stereotypes for LGBTQ+ students (or not), on a quantitative test, as well as for responses about social behaviors. I postulated that LGBTQ+ individuals under threat will perform more poorly on the test, and exhibit more problematic social behaviors. In the current study, some participants were assigned to a control condition and were given a diagnostic test, while …

Through a combination of case studies discussing creative vision, character development, and costume design, alongside concept analyses, this …

The Rhetorical Use Of The Other: An Analysis Of Symbolic Disability In Contemporary Horror Films, Seth Hadley Jan 2023

The Rhetorical Use Of The Other: An Analysis Of Symbolic Disability In Contemporary Horror Films, Seth Hadley

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

In this research, I examine the concept of the Other in horror films. I use Kenneth Burke’s identification, Jean-Francois Lyotard’s metanarrative concept, and Lennard Davis’s bell curve of normalcy to describe the Other and how otherness relates to disability. First, I discuss how horror films have portrayed the Other historically in a negative context and slowly transition to the virtuous Other, the final girl. Next, I discuss the trend of portraying disability or otherness as an asset or tool in contemporary films like A Quiet Place, Birdbox, and Don’t Breathe. Then, I examine how current horror films explore the implications …

Understanding And Application Of Systems Thinking To Diversity Challenges At Higher Education Institutions, Odell Jones Jan 2023

Understanding And Application Of Systems Thinking To Diversity Challenges At Higher Education Institutions, Odell Jones

Full-Text Theses & Dissertations

This research argues that establishing and sustaining leadership diversity within Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) is a complex-systems challenge and that those responsible for leading efforts to establish and sustain diversity, referred to as DEI leaders, should adopt a mindset of systems thinking and apply problem-solving methods and tools informed by systems thinking. Semi-structured interviews with DEI Leaders at HEIs were conducted regarding background and perceptions of their work, and how they thought about and made choices concerning diversity challenges. Interview questions were designed to gain an understanding of the degree to which these leaders think about DEI and if they …
