Nursing Interventions To Decrease Depressive And Anxious Symptoms In Hispanic-American Youth, Vanessa C. Hernandez Jan 2023

Nursing Interventions To Decrease Depressive And Anxious Symptoms In Hispanic-American Youth, Vanessa C. Hernandez

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Introduction: Hispanic-American youth are less likely to receive mental health services despite being at increased risk for depression and anxiety. Having depression and anxiety at a young age can have detrimental long-term effects such as sexual risk behavior, delinquency, and suicide. Various kinds of nurses interact with this age group which can be a missed opportunity to intervene for the welfare of these youth. Interventions exist for depression and anxiety; however, they are not specific to nurses who care for young Hispanic-American patients. Methods: An integrative literature review was performed to identify nursing interventions for Hispanic American youth with depression …

An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis Of Lived Experiences Of Graduate-Level Peace Educators: Voices For Sustained Peace, Kwasi David Ansong Jan 2023

An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis Of Lived Experiences Of Graduate-Level Peace Educators: Voices For Sustained Peace, Kwasi David Ansong

Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations

Peace education is arguably one of the underappreciated areas of study within the social sciences. Many lifelong, dedicated peace education professionals often feel undervalued by the military-industrial complex apparatus. Influential individuals and corporations that thrive in chaotic and conflicting environments every so often underestimate the relevance of peace educators. Educators find among academic and professional students an intensified urgency to learn the skills necessary to address real-world conflict; however, these courageous individuals are seemingly battling powerful forces with wealth and power. Although such happenings can be demoralizing, it is slowly galvanizing dedicated peace educators to evolve by altering their skill …

On The Way To Maturity, Mikhail Ilyin Jan 2023

On The Way To Maturity, Mikhail Ilyin

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

My experience as a dance maker is rooted in the following: use of space, interpersonal relationships, efforts in dynamics, psychology, and personal memory, all of which inform my thesis project. This thesis project specifically investigates the stages of psychosocial development as seen through the theories of psychologist Erik Erikson. It explores the emotional effect of these psychosocial stages on people, including conflicts and positive impacts. I demonstrate how these developmental stages can define a person's identity and how audience members, choreographers, and artists from various fields might be influenced by them. Weaving together my research and personal experiences in fine …

Etsu Today - Winter 2023, University Marketing And Communication, East Tennessee State University

ETSU Today [magazine]

This past semester, I had the pleasure of delivering one of the most exciting State of the University addresses of my tenure at East Tennessee State University. Despite a global health crisis, we recorded our highest graduation rate in the university’s history. We outpaced most public universities in Tennessee in enrollment growth and welcomed the most diverse class in the institution’s history this fall. Even as we struggled against burnout from the pandemic, we recorded our highest levels of employee satisfaction and surpassed national …

Just Extracurriculars?, Emily Gold Waldman Jan 2023

Just Extracurriculars?, Emily Gold Waldman

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

Extracurricular activities have been the battleground for a striking number of Supreme Court cases set at public schools, from cases involving speech to religion to drug testing. Indeed, the two most recent Supreme Court cases involving constitutional rights at public schools—Kennedy v. Bremerton School District (2022) and Mahanoy Area School District v. B.L. (2021)—both arose in the extracurricular context of school sports. Even so, the Supreme Court has never fully clarified the status of extracurricular activities themselves. Once a school offers an extracurricular activity, is participation merely a privilege? Does the fact that extracurricular activities are voluntary for students affect …

Matter, Nature, Cosmos: The Scientific Art Of The Early Modern English Stage, Jean Feerick Jan 2023

Matter, Nature, Cosmos: The Scientific Art Of The Early Modern English Stage, Jean Feerick

2023 Faculty Bibliography

How does our understanding of early modern performance, culture and identity change when we decentre Shakespeare? And how might a more inclusive approach to early modern drama help enable students to discuss a range of issues, including race and gender, in more productive ways?
Underpinned by these questions, this collection offers a wide-ranging, authoritative guide to research on drama in Shakespeare's England, mapping the variety of approaches to the context and work of Shakespeare and his contemporaries. By paying attention to repertory, performance in and beyond playhouses, modes of performance, and lost and less-studied plays, the handbook reshapes our critical …

Representing Alterity through Puppetry and Performing Objects

This article examines two “closeted” puppeteers, Forman Brown and Ralph Chessé, who demonstrate alterity’s ability to disrupt itself. Queer Void: Autoethnographic Notes On Queer Melancholy And Transgender Shame, Lake Davis Jan 2023

Queer Void: Autoethnographic Notes On Queer Melancholy And Transgender Shame, Lake Davis

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Despite the affective turn in critical and cultural communication research, there is little scholarship on the interplay of affect, identity, and self-perception among transgender and non-binary individuals as they live within and chafe against dominant cisheteronormative discourses. With the understanding that affective sensations are products of acculturation and often reflect the demands of broader society, this thesis focuses on the sensation of shame within transgender bodies as a product of the imposition of categorical identifications onto individuals whose bodies, minds, and desires are rendered incoherent within the dominant cisheteronormative frame. Through qualitative autoethnography grounded in feminist, critical, and Queer theories, …

Dispatches From The Home Front: Violet Hunt As War Writer And Reluctant Modernist, Heather M. Robinson, Melissa Dinsman Jan 2023

Dispatches From The Home Front: Violet Hunt As War Writer And Reluctant Modernist, Heather M. Robinson, Melissa Dinsman

Publications and Research

The life and work of Violet Hunt showcases the tension between modernism’s challenges to Victorian and Edwardian literary and social traditions, and the conservatism, particularly with regard to gender norms, of many of the modernist canon’s key figures: institutions, writers and critics alike. Although her work was well regarded during her lifetime, and she was a central figure in London’s literary scene in the early-twentieth century, Hunt is now best known for her long, and ultimately disastrous, relationship with Ford Madox Ford. Her copious literary oeuvre, comprising seventeen novels, three collections of short stories, and several works of biography, translation …

Every Tree Fixed With A Purpose: Contesting Value In Olmsted’S Parks, Eric S. Godoy Jan 2023

Every Tree Fixed With A Purpose: Contesting Value In Olmsted’S Parks, Eric S. Godoy

Faculty Publications - Philosophy

Olmsted was an influential landscape architect whose works include many parks, recreation grounds and more. Inspired by Romantic and transcendentalist thinkers, he developed ‘pastoral transcendentalism’, a style of designing parks that mimicked natural spaces to reproduce their values within cities. Although environmental justice scholars have pointed out how these designs limit access to parks, I argue that environmental philosophers have not adequately discussed Olmsted, particularly his axiology of nature. Reflecting on it reveals how environmental injustice consists not only of restricting access to nature to protect its essential value – for Olmsted, scenery that could induce a contemplative mindset – …

Treatment Of The Differently Abled: Representations Of Disability From Victorian Periodicals To Contemporary Graphic Narratives, Rachelle Echevarria Jan 2023

Treatment Of The Differently Abled: Representations Of Disability From Victorian Periodicals To Contemporary Graphic Narratives, Rachelle Echevarria

Honors Undergraduate Theses

In recent years, a number of efforts have been made to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in academic institutions, the workplace, and to examine and analyze representations of marginalized populations in a variety of literary and cultural contexts. These efforts usually acknowledge past mistakes, emphasizing the idea that history shall not and should not repeat itself. While analyzing the representations of disability is important in its own right, it's also important to understand why these perceptions exist. This thesis suggests that when the representations of disabilities from different mediums and from different time periods are examined in relationship, readers may …

The Viking Age As A Themed Experience: Representing Hitorical Narrative Through Research Based Design, Edward D. Macpherson Jan 2023

The Viking Age As A Themed Experience: Representing Hitorical Narrative Through Research Based Design, Edward D. Macpherson

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024

I intend to design an interactive educational experience that teaches guests about the culture, society, and beliefs of Scandinavian peoples during the Viking age. The concepts are illustrated through a dynamic narrative designed to be experienced through exploration of a themed environment. Immersion into the narrative is intended to instill a sense of active participation with the culture itself. This interaction is intended to inspire guests to further investigate the culture and history outside the limits of the experience. These qualities, unique to an immersive environmental themed experience, capture the lasting attention of an audience such as other mediums may …
