Elizabeth Robins Portrays Working Women In Suffragette Literature: A Reflection Through The Lens Of The 2015 Film, Suffragette, Joanne E. Gates Jan 2023

Elizabeth Robins Portrays Working Women In Suffragette Literature: A Reflection Through The Lens Of The 2015 Film, Suffragette, Joanne E. Gates

Presentations, Proceedings & Performances

I place the 2015-released film Suffragette within a context of the efforts Elizabeth Robins made to document and, by witnessing, to advocate, the early phases of the British Women’s Suffrage Movement in England. Robins wrote and participated across margins. An expatriate American living in England, she had no personal advantage to gain with a franchise. In her late forties and in ill health, she took perhaps only "safe" opportunities to thrust herself into the fray. But as Jane Marcus points out, with her research on the play that became Votes for Women, she took efforts to experience how working-class …

Facets Of Feminist Biography, Joanne E. Gates

Presentations, Proceedings & Performances

This is a brief overview of how I continue to be engaged with research on Elizabeth Robins in the context of other women writers, post-retirement. The presentation's subtitle might be phrased as "From my study of the one-woman show in graduate school to creative and poetic approaches as emerita researcher." I maintain the Elizabeth Robins Web at JSU and have presented two papers (virtually at recent SAMLA conferences) since leaving the classroom. I outline several of my creative approaches to women's biography through my academic career. I am particularly interested in the format of several poetry collections that piece together …

An Excerpt From The Play, 1000 Ways A Black Woman Dies: Stories From The Waiting Room, Britney Mallebranche Jan 2023

An Excerpt From The Play, 1000 Ways A Black Woman Dies: Stories From The Waiting Room, Britney Mallebranche

Undergraduate Review

1000 Ways a Black Woman Dies: Stories from the Waiting Room is a play based on real stories of discriminatory events that Black women have undergone in the United States. I am a firm believer that art can take the shape of the silenced and give them a voice. This play intends to reflect the voices of those we unfortunately never got to hear.

Cultivating Institutional Change: Infusing Principles Of Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion Into Everyday Honors College Practices, Tara Tuttle, Julie Stewart, Kayla Powell Jan 2023

Cultivating Institutional Change: Infusing Principles Of Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion Into Everyday Honors College Practices, Tara Tuttle, Julie Stewart, Kayla Powell

National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs: Chapters

Envisioning and implementing strategic changes around diversity, equity, and inclusion in honors can be paradoxical. While honors colleges are traditionally regarded as tight-knit communities that serve as centers of curricular and pedagogical innovation, they have also been sites of exclusion because of outdated definitions of excellence based on inequitable presuppositions inherent to the university admissions process. Because many honors programs endeavor to produce publicly engaged graduates, creating a diverse, inclusive, and equitable learning environment is a moral imperative. Not only does it provide a safe and welcoming environment for learners, but it also models the type of behavior we want …

Positioning Honors Colleges To Lead Diversity And Inclusion Efforts At Predominantly White Institutions, Susan Dinan, Jason T. Hilton, Jennifer Willford Jan 2023

Positioning Honors Colleges To Lead Diversity And Inclusion Efforts At Predominantly White Institutions, Susan Dinan, Jason T. Hilton, Jennifer Willford

National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs: Chapters

Honors Colleges are well positioned to be leaders in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives on the campuses of Predominantly White Institutions (PWIs) by embracing motivated and engaged students from a broad range of backgrounds. Stretching the missions of honors education beyond narrowly defined academic excellence to embrace intellectually curious and creative students and not just those with stellar standardized test scores and GPAs will yield more dynamic and inclusive communities. Embracing holistic admissions practices allows honors colleges to build cohorts of students whose experiences may or may not include being recognized as the smartest in the class in their …

Re-Dress As Redress: Shakespeare’S Comedy Of Errors, Jane Foster Woodruff Jan 2023

Re-Dress As Redress: Shakespeare’S Comedy Of Errors, Jane Foster Woodruff

Quidditas

DELNO C. WEST AWARD WINNER

Writing near the end of a century-long ‘explosion’ of Tudor theatre, Shakespeare benefitted from a variety of influences, both sacral and secular. Among his literary influences were the works of classical dramatists (Sophocles, Seneca, Plautus, and the like), who had used their plays to editorialize on contemporary societal issues. To this same end, in his early historical play Richard III Shakespeare chose to address a multiplicity of problematic themes, the most obvious being that, although Richard’s ambition and his lethality had been sufficient to win him a crown, they were insufficient to preserve it: power …

Theatre As An Individual And Collective Art, Chin Wai Wong Jan 2023

Theatre As An Individual And Collective Art, Chin Wai Wong

Theatre Student Work

Art can be as tangible as objects. Art can also be as intangible as ideas. Art exists in multiple forms, such as painting, music, literatures, dancing, acting, and so on, which at the same time defines the form of theatre art. The multi-dimensional nature of theatre art is complex and requires a lot from people, including time, money, and effort. Such effort is not singular but rather diverse and multi-layered. It not only requires people to have contributive skills but also the ability to bind together the skills that different people have. Theatre is collaborative by nature, so communication is …

Directing Stupid Fucking Bird: An Exploration Of Theatrical Performance’S Ability To Build Community And Develop Empathy Through Collaborative Creation And Shared Space, K. C. Casey Jan 2023

Directing Stupid Fucking Bird: An Exploration Of Theatrical Performance’S Ability To Build Community And Develop Empathy Through Collaborative Creation And Shared Space, K. C. Casey

Theses & ETDs

I have produced and written this thesis as a culmination of my directing-focused educational path at New College of Florida. Within the generalist program of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies, I sought out various opportunities over the past three and a half years to expand my knowledge of stage direction both practically, theoretically, and artistically. My goal since my third semester here, determined through conversations with my advisor Dr. Villada, was to direct a main-stage show at New College. This goal eventually became my thesis project: to direct Aaron Posner’s Stupid Fucking Bird and present it to an audience as …

Donald Trump, Social Media, And January 6th: An Analysis Of The "Save America" Speech And Usage Of Social Media In Connection With The January 6th Insurrection, Kp Powell Jan 2023

Donald Trump, Social Media, And January 6th: An Analysis Of The "Save America" Speech And Usage Of Social Media In Connection With The January 6th Insurrection, Kp Powell

Theses & ETDs

This study lies at the intersection between politics and performance. I argue that social media is a political communicator and contributed to the January 6th insurrection through Donald Trump’s social media usage. He used his social media platforms to manipulate with misinformation and conspiracy theories. I examine the Save America speech Donald Trump gave on the morning of January 6, 2021, hours before the insurrection at the United States Capitol, as a performance piece and then analyze the words he said to connect his speech to misinformation and conspiracy theories. Along with this, Donald Trump urged his supporters to fight …

Scars On An Hourglass, Oceanna Krasny Jan 2023

Scars On An Hourglass, Oceanna Krasny

Theses & ETDs

This collection of experimental lyric poetry titled Scars on an Hourglass and its accompanying Artist’s Statement follow an unnamed female narrator in the aftermath of a fictionalized sexual assault. The structure takes the shape of an hourglass and foregrounds the seasons winter and spring. This collection, inspired by the process of travel, the creation of notebooks featuring collage art and handwritten excerpts, and my experiences within rape culture, is divided into two sections. “Winter,” with short experimental poems uses language to highlight harsh, blue-tinged imagery that conveys themes of identity, assault, and loss. “Spring” places emphasis on images of rebirth …

Applications Of Newton's Laws To Variable Mass Systems, Micah Kienzle Jan 2023

Applications Of Newton's Laws To Variable Mass Systems, Micah Kienzle

Theses & ETDs

We develop a pedagogical framework for treating variable mass systems in classical mechanics with the aim of explaining the difference between two rope systems: a rope sliding off a table versus falling from a coil. We have seen that energy is conserved in the former, but not the latter, and we explore this difference in several ways. We explicitly solve for the dynamics of both systems using energy conservation and momentum analysis before employing the Cauchy continuum equation to explore discontinuities in tension profiles as a source of inelasticity, leading us to explicitly compute the energy loss in the second …

Paradise Lost And Found And Lost And Found: Staging A Possible Future Through Workshop Facilitation, Nicole Silvera Jan 2023

Paradise Lost And Found And Lost And Found: Staging A Possible Future Through Workshop Facilitation, Nicole Silvera

Theses & ETDs

New College of Florida’s 58th Street Campus Development Plan has been in development since 2020. The plan has been deemed a “high-priority project” in the New College Master Plan as it will complete the College Drive loop by creating a two-lane paved road connecting 58th Street and College Drive. The road would pave through an underutilized greenspace and cost the school over $.600,000. There are multiple species of trees and animals that live in the greenspace, and it is a prime outdoor space suitable for students, faculty, staff, and guests to connect with the Earth and with each other. This …

Museums And Placemaking: Community Museums As Catalysts For Urban Transformation, Lauren David Jan 2023

Museums And Placemaking: Community Museums As Catalysts For Urban Transformation, Lauren David

Theses & ETDs

Using the Anacostia Community Museum in Washington, D.C., the Wing Luke Museum in Seattle, Washington, and the Tenement Museum in New York City, this thesis investigates the potential of community museums as catalysts for social and environmental transformation. This thesis does not examine the physical and economic development of place in relation to museums; rather, it focuses on the socio-environmental benefits of community museums, highlighting the current social and environmental challenges museums face, and proposing a potential framework for standard placemaking in the museum world, provided by the Project for Public Spaces.

The “Thing” About Bodies: Accessing The Grotesque Body Through Carnival Puppets, Kyle Miller Jan 2023

The “Thing” About Bodies: Accessing The Grotesque Body Through Carnival Puppets, Kyle Miller

Theses & ETDs

This thesis proposes the carnivalesque as potentially subversive when placed outside of the time and space of the carnival due to the unrestrained body’s status in society as perverse and potentially dangerous. The first chapter discusses Mikhail Bakhtin’s “grotesque body” in the carnival in conversation with both the Russian Carnival puppet Petrushka as it existed prior to and during the Russian revolutions in 1905 and 1917 against Tsar Nicholas II as well as Alfred Jarry’s Ubu Roi (or King Ubu), conceptualizing similarities between the puppet and the body under the contexts of subversive entertainment. Jarry’s Ubu Roi is placed within …

Amalgam: Queering And Decolonizing Genre And Music Practice, Ash Hoffman Jan 2023

Amalgam: Queering And Decolonizing Genre And Music Practice, Ash Hoffman

Theses & ETDs

This project examines why and how, musically, and in creative praxis, I began my journey towards a decolonized, genre-less approach to creation through the process of writing, recording, and producing my first studio album. AMALGAM, the paper, and the accompanying album, aims to assess the intricate relationships and challenges that exist intersectionally between music, creativity, and the world's many oppressive social systems which come as a result of our colonized conditionings. The goal of the praxis and messages explored in this work is to engage in a queering process of our relationships to genre and music as they have been …

“Your Man, The Queer, The Queen Of Dunleary”: Queerness And Irishness As Presented In Selected Plays From Thomas Kilroy, Corinna Ni'cearbhaill Jan 2023

“Your Man, The Queer, The Queen Of Dunleary”: Queerness And Irishness As Presented In Selected Plays From Thomas Kilroy, Corinna Ni'cearbhaill

Theses & ETDs

This thesis is a three part analysis of three different plays from Thomas Kilroy: The Death and Resurrection of Mr. Roche (1968), The Secret Fall of Constance Wilde (1997), and My Scandalous Life (2004). Chapter 1 examines Mr. Roche through a textual lens, utilizing Jeffery Jerome Cohen’s monster theory to read how Irish men in the mid-20th century react to threats of masculinity. Chapter 2 looks at three different stage performances, two stagings of The Secret Fall of Constance Wilde and one of My Scandalous Life. These two plays are sequential to each other and build off of the same …

El Refugio De La Imagen Chamánica En El Mundo Malagana, Sonia Blanco, Catalina Simmonds Caldas Jan 2023

El Refugio De La Imagen Chamánica En El Mundo Malagana, Sonia Blanco, Catalina Simmonds Caldas

Segundo congreso internacional de iconografía precolombina. Barcelona, 2023. Actas.

Indecent Bodies In Early Modern Visual Culture: An Introduction, Fabian Jonietz, Mandy Richter, Alison Stewart Jan 2023

Indecent Bodies In Early Modern Visual Culture: An Introduction, Fabian Jonietz, Mandy Richter, Alison Stewart

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Faculty Publications and Creative Activity

Indecency ‒ the polar opposite of propriety, appropriateness, respectability, decorum ‒ has played a central role in our understanding of Early Modern cultural norms since the beginning of art history as an academic field in the nineteenth century. Accordingly, the concept of indecency was fundamental to historical and contemporary discourses that attempted to balance social limits on indecorous behaviour and images. At the same time, the appeal of such visual imagery, the attraction of graphic depictions of bodies and their actions, resulted in conflicting responses on the part of viewers. Historically, decency and indecency played defining roles in both the …
