School of Nursing and Midwifery

Abstract Introduction Many people with Parkinson’s (PwP) are not given the opportunity or do not have adequate access to participate in clinical research. To address this, we have codeveloped with users an online platform that connects PwP to clinical studies in their local area. It enables site staff to communicate with potential participants and aims to increase the participation of the Parkinson’s community in research. This protocol outlines the mixed methods study protocol for the usability testing of the platform. Methods and analysis We will seek user input to finalise the platform’s design, which will then be deployed in a …

How To … Define Clinical Education Research Terminology: A Glossary, Gabrielle M. Finn, Ben Charmer, Oliver E. Burton, Aqua Asif, Matthew H.V. Byrne, Nicola Brennan, Megan E.L. Brown

Peninsula Medical School

Clinical education research (ClinEdR) utilises diverse terminology, which can lead to confusion. A common language is essential for enhancing impact. An expert panel drawn from various workstreams within the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Incubator for Clinical Education Research was tasked with reviewing an initial list of terms for the development of a glossary of terms in the field of ClinEdR. The glossary was populated with terms, definitions and foundational papers by the authors and peer-reviewed for accuracy. The glossary of terms developed for ClinEdR should enable researchers to use a common language, promoting consistency and improving …

Introduction Functional motor disorder (FMD) is a common cause of disabling neurological symptoms such as weakness and tremor. Physio4FMD is a pragmatic, multicentre single blind randomised controlled trial to evaluate effectiveness and cost effectiveness of specialist physiotherapy for FMD. Like many other studies this trial was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods The planned statistical and health economics analyses for this trial are described, as well as the sensitivity analyses designed to assess the disruption caused by COVID-19. The trial treatment of at least 89 participants (33%) was disrupted due to the pandemic. To account for this, we have extended …

Perceived Value Within An International Hospitality Learning Environment: Antecedents And Outcomes, Abdallah Elshaer, Rong Huang

Plymouth Business School

The number of students attending British universities is rapidly increasing, among them, many are international students. These diverse students pose opportunities and concerns regarding the equitable and efficient delivery of the learning environment. This study examines the perceived value within an international learning environment (ILE) and examines antecedents and outcomes of such value in addressing the students' needs. Structure Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) was used to analyse 323 online survey responses, and thematic analysis and content analysis were used to examine 35 semi-structured interviews. Work-Integrated Learning, Academic Integration, and Scholarship of Teaching and Learning are established as major value practices that …

Assessing The Association Between Overcrowding And Human Physiological Stress Response In Different Urban Contexts: A Case Study In Salzburg, Austria, Zhaoxi Zhang, Kristýna Měchurová, Bernd Resch, Prince Amegbor, Clive E. Sabel

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Overcrowding in densely populated urban areas is increasingly becoming an issue for mental health disorders. Yet, only few studies have examined the association between overcrowding in cities and physiological stress responses. Thus, this study employed wearable sensors (a wearable camera, an Empatica E4 wristband and a smartphone-based GPS) to assess the association between overcrowding and human physiological stress response in four types of urban contexts (green space, transit space, commercial space, and blue space). A case study with 26 participants was conducted in Salzburg, Austria. We used Mask R-CNN to detect elements related to overcrowding such as human crowds, sitting …

Beyond Negation And Excluded Middle: An Exploration To Embrace The Otherness Beyond Classical Logic System And Into Neutrosophic Logic, Florentin Smarandache, Victor Christianto

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

As part of our small contribution in dialogue toward better peace development and reconciliation studies, and following Toffler & Toffler’s War and Antiwar (1993), the present article delves into a realm of logic beyond the traditional confines of negation and the excluded middle principle, exploring the nuances of "Otherness" that transcend classical and Nagatomo logics. Departing from the foundational premises of classical Aristotelian logic systems, this exploration ventures into alternative realms of reasoning, specifically examining Neutrosophic Logic and Klein bottle logic (cf. Smarandache, 2005). The study challenges conventional boundaries and explores the implications of embracing paradoxes and self-reference in logic …

Expanding The Dimensionality Of Team Deviance: An Organizing Framework And Review, Trevor Spoelma, Tamanna Chauhan Jan 2023

Expanding The Dimensionality Of Team Deviance: An Organizing Framework And Review, Trevor Spoelma, Tamanna Chauhan

Faculty and Staff Publications

Although team deviance is known to detract from team functioning, extant literature largely focuses on deviance that is independently enacted and directed internally toward other members. This relatively narrow focus poses limitations to the practical application of strategies to reduce the incidence and negative impact of team deviance. We offer a four-dimensional typology that takes into account features of team deviance that are important yet undertheorized: level of coordination and target membership. We use this typology to summarize current research, highlight the narratives on team deviance that underlie each dimension, and discuss how to advance the research domain.

Perceptions Of Healthcare Professionals’ Psychological Wellbeing At Work And The Link To Patients’ Experiences Of Care: A Scoping Review, Kathryn Bamforth, Pamela Rae, Jill Maben, Helen Lloyd, Susie Pearce

More Faculty of Health Research

Background: Healthcare professionals’ psychological wellbeing at work affects patients’ experiences of care. However, the literature tends to focus on negative aspects of psychological wellbeing, such as stress and burnout, and interventions to support healthcare professionals’ wellbeing have limited effectiveness. The growing global concern over the psychological wellbeing of healthcare professionals has escalated following the COVID-19 pandemic. There is an urgent need to review the recent literature on healthcare professionals' psychological wellbeing to identify gaps in our knowledge. This scoping review will help focus the future research to improve the psychological wellbeing of healthcare staff and thereby patients’ care experiences. Aim: …

Analysis Of Fibroblast Growth Factor 14 (Fgf14) Structural Variants Reveals The Genetic Basis Of The Early Onset Nystagmus Locus Nys4 And Variable Ataxia, F Ceroni, D Osborne, S Clokie, Da Bax, Ej Cassidy, Mj Dunn, Cm Harris, Je Self, Nk Ragge

School of Psychology

AbstractNystagmus (involuntary, rhythmical eye movements) can arise due to sensory eye defects, in association with neurological disorders or as an isolated condition. We identified a family with early onset nystagmus and additional neurological features carrying a partial duplication of FGF14, a gene associated with spinocerebellar ataxia type 27 (SCA27) and episodic ataxia. Detailed eye movement analysis revealed oculomotor anomalies strikingly similar to those reported in a previously described four-generation family with early onset nystagmus and linkage to a region on chromosome 13q31.3-q33.1 (NYS4). Since FGF14 lies within NYS4, we revisited the original pedigree using whole genome sequencing, identifying a 161 …

From The Devine Gift To The Devil's Bargains: Asian Americans In The Ideology Of White Supremacy, Vinay Harpalani

Faculty Scholarship

White supremacy is complex, evolving, and ever nuanced in all of its aspects, including its positioning of Asian Americans. Through different lenses, Stacy Hawkins, Robert Chang, Matthew Shaw, and Shakira Pleasant challenge me to interrogate this positioning even further. My reply can only begin to do so, but this colloquy will also inspire my future writings. In delineating my thoughts, I also draw inspiration from my mentor, the late Derrick Bell, whose insights have consistently informed my work.

Neo‐Fluxus: Multimedia Performance Art And Architecture, Mathew Emmett

School of Art, Design and Architecture

Abstract. Space Interface is a collaboration between artist‐architect Mathew Emmett and the legendary Eberhard Kranemann, a German neo‐Fluxus artist and founding member of electronic music pioneers Kraftwerk. Here, Emmett describes how, through mixed‐reality performance and audiovisual installation, their work transforms architectural settings by using video and electronic improvisation to evoke extended levels of architectural reality. They consider buildings as psychological prostheses, and their experiments attempt to invert and extend what might constitute architecture.

Two Of A Kind Or Distant Relatives?, Willibald Ruch, Valentina Vylobkova, Sonja Heintz Jan 2023

Two Of A Kind Or Distant Relatives?, Willibald Ruch, Valentina Vylobkova, Sonja Heintz

School of Psychology

Abstract: Allport’s distinction of personality devaluated (personality) and personality evaluated (character) raised the question of whether the character is redundant with personality, which still remains open today. The present study hence compares the Five-Factor Model of personality and the VIA-classification (Values in Action) of character strengths across two methods (self- and peer-reports) and two levels of abstraction (domains/factors and scales/facets). A sample of 152 participants and 152 peer-raters completed the NEO-Personality Inventory-Revised and the VIA Inventory of Strengths (VIA-IS). Personality and character assessed with these inventories were found to strongly overlap, yet the different operationalizations were rarely redundant (except for …

Efficacy And Acceptability Of Mobilisation And Stretches Of The Foot And Ankle In People With Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy, Vasileios Lepesis Jan 2023

Efficacy And Acceptability Of Mobilisation And Stretches Of The Foot And Ankle In People With Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy, Vasileios Lepesis

School of Health Professions Theses

People with diabetic peripheral neuropathy and limited joint mobility syndrome (LJMS) can experience increased forefoot peak plantar pressures (PPPs). Elevated PPPs are a risk factor for diabetic neuropathic foot ulceration. Diabetic peripheral neuropathy can also affect balance and increase the risk of falling. This thesis investigated the efficacy and acceptability of foot and ankle mobilisations combined with home stretches in people living at risk of neuropathic diabetic foot ulceration and falling. A systematic review and meta-analysis examined the effects of foot and ankle physical therapy modalities for the management of foot and ankle joint mobility, PPPs, and balance. The review …

ARRESTING ASSEMBLY: AN ARGUMENT AGAINST EXPANDING
CRIMINALLY PUNISHABLE PROTEST
ALLISON M. FREEDMAN

ABSTRACT

In recent years, public protests have shed light on societal inequities that had previously gone unheard. Yet instead of responding to protesters’ concerns, many state legislators are attempting to silence disenfranchised groups by introducing hundreds of “anti-protest” bills. This is a recent phenomenon and one that is accelerating—the largest wave of “anti-protest” bills was introduced on the heels of the most robust protest movement in recent history, Black Lives Matter during the summer of 2020.

Although it is clear that legislators are attempting to tamp down public …

The Need For An Asian American Supreme Court Justice, Vinay Harpalani

Faculty Scholarship

In her insightful Comment on Students for Fair Admissions, Inc. v. President & Fellows of Harvard College and Students for Fair Admissions, Inc. v. University of North Carolina (hereinafter SFFA cases), Dean Angela Onwuachi-Willig critiques Chief Justice Roberts’s majority opinion for its “simplistic understanding of race and racism.” She interrogates the “doxa” — the “unexamined cultural beliefs” that structure the majority’s narrative on racial experiences. Onwuachi- Willig elucidates how Chief Justice Roberts accepts whiteness as a tacit norm and ignores the marginalization of people of color. She contrasts this with the “fuller” history of American racism brought forth by Justices …
