Barriers, Motivation, And Interventions For Women With Substance Use Disorders During Pregnancy, Sarah Novinska
Barriers, Motivation, And Interventions For Women With Substance Use Disorders During Pregnancy, Sarah Novinska
Counselor Education Capstones
Pregnant women with a substance use disorder have many barriers to treatment, including stigma, fear of disclosing use, the potential for having their children taken away, gender and race disparities, mental health, public policy, and the lengthy process to get into treatment. Ways to overcome these barriers, including gender-specific treatment, decreasing stigma associated with substance use disorders, increasing trauma informed care, providers assessing their own biases, and changing public policy are discussed. In addition, the importance of learning how to overcome barriers to protect the health of mothers, babies, their families, and communities, along with several interventions including screening and …
The Constitution's Blind Spots: A Discourse Analysis Of Marginalization Within The United States Constitution, Ellie Martel
The Constitution's Blind Spots: A Discourse Analysis Of Marginalization Within The United States Constitution, Ellie Martel
Honors Program Theses and Projects
The United States Constitution begins with the words "We the People,” yet several groups of people were overlooked as it was being crafted. The alienated populace felt that the governing constitution should reflect people of all sexes, genders, races, and nationalities, given the diversity of this nation. Although it took time and effort, the abolitionist and women's rights movements contributed to the formulation of the amendments that would extend constitutional rights to underrepresented groups. The purpose of this thesis is to look deeper at the phrases used in texts to uncover feelings and common themes that presented themselves in speeches …

The Inevitability Of Sin, Kevin Timpe
The Inevitability Of Sin, Kevin Timpe
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
Part of the traditional Christian doctrine of sin is the claim that, due to the effects of original sin, acts of sin are inevitable. Of course, our reflection on sinful actions is shaped by how we think about human freedom and divine providence more broadly. Some have argued that libertarians have a difficult time accounting for the inevitability of sin. This paper uses David Lewis’s work on counterfactuals and possible worlds to give an account of how the inevitability of sin can be understood. It then shows how both theological determinism and Molinism can give an account of sin’s inevitability …

Romancing The University: Bipoc Scholars In Romance Novels In The 1980s And Now, Jayashree Kamble
Publications and Research
English-language mass-market romance novels written by BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) writers and starring BIPOC protagonists are a small but important group. This article is a comparative analysis of how recent representations of diversity in this sub-set of the genre, specifically the character of the Black academic and the language of racial justice, compare with the first group of BIPOC novels that were published in 1984 (Sandra Kitt’s Adam and Eva and All Good Things as well as Barbara Stephens’s A Toast to Love). In Adrianna Herrera’s American Love Story (2019), Katrina Jackson’s Office Hours (2020), and …
Technology Justice: Taxation Of Our Collective And Cumulative Cognitive Inheritance, Hilary G. Escajeda
Technology Justice: Taxation Of Our Collective And Cumulative Cognitive Inheritance, Hilary G. Escajeda
Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review
As artificial intelligence and robotic technologies accelerate economic transformation, outdated property and tax laws will increasingly fail American workers with ordinary skills that perform routine job functions. Because technology may render millions of workers redundant, U.S. policymakers must make significant social, economic, and legal structural changes to (1) improve the lives of average workers, (2) support the economy, and (3) maintain political stability.
Inspired by Thomas Paine’s Agrarian Justice, this twenty-first century Article argues that “Technology Justice” requires that humans benefit from the cognitive endowment created by our ancestors’ minds. Specifically, it asserts that our collective and cumulative cognitive …

Peer Mentoring Program For Psychology Major Students: A Promising Prospect, Nadia Calderon
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Many first-year and second-year undergraduate students face challenges and abundance of college resources they may not know how to use. Learning about campus resources and dealing with these challenges could help students thrive academically and personally in the college environment. We gathered survey data from 87 students from seven sections of the Bridgewater State University Orientation to the Psychology Major (OPM) course. In one of these sections, we implemented a Peer Mentoring Program (PMP). We also hosted psychology-focused events in which 48 psychology major students attended and filled out feedback questionnaires. In this study we aimed to analyze the effectiveness …
Computing An Image Of Objects Hiding Behind A Black Hole, Shannon Harding
Computing An Image Of Objects Hiding Behind A Black Hole, Shannon Harding
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Gravitational lensing is the bending of light rays around a black hole. The goal of this project was to produce a computer code that would model light rays coming from a grid of objects set behind a rotating black hole. Using these light rays, we produced an image illustrating how this background of objects would appear to an observer on Earth. This was done by creating a MATLAB code to model the paths of multiple light rays at a time. This code was then used to help check and correct a C++ code that produced an image. Over the semester, …

Significant conceptual and empirical evidence has been found through qualitative research about the benefits, limitations, and uses of individual interviews. However, there is scant research illustrating how researchers use specific techniques that center participants’ intersecting identities to build rapport, trust, and authentic connections during individual interviews, and especially during interviews with Black women. We illustrate how we used eight empirically grounded techniques in our qualitative individual interviews with Black women. Through our analysis of the interviews, the concept of safety emerged. “This person is safe” reflects the combined stories the women reported regarding their experiences engaging in individual interviews. In …

Difference Of Facial Achromatic Numbers Between Two Triangular Embeddings Of A Graph, Kengo Enami, Yumiko Ohno
Difference Of Facial Achromatic Numbers Between Two Triangular Embeddings Of A Graph, Kengo Enami, Yumiko Ohno
Theory & Applications of Graphs
A facial $3$-complete $k$-coloring of a triangulation $G$ on a surface is a vertex $k$-coloring such that every triple of $k$-colors appears on the boundary of some face of $G$. The facial $3$-achromatic number $\psi_3(G)$ of $G$ is the maximum integer $k$ such that $G$ has a facial $3$-complete $k$-coloring. This notion is an expansion of the complete coloring, that is, a proper vertex coloring of a graph such that every pair of colors appears on the ends of some edge.
For two triangulations $G$ and $G'$ on a surface, $\psi_3(G)$ may not be equal to $\psi_3(G')$ even if $G$ …

Given the increasing frequency and sophistication of methods and strategies employed in cyberattacks, cyber resilience has become a basic notion of cyber risk management. To be cyber-resilient against cyber risks, shipping companies must be proactive in establishing and implementing actions, constructing effective strategies, and adopting mitigation methods to strengthen their assets. However, shipping companies have only lately tended to fully recognize the necessity for a cybersecurity perspective to enable effective cyber risk management and mitigation of increasing cyberattacks. Aside from deficiencies in system design, integration, or maintenance, human factors are the prime weakness that potentially jeopardizes the ship's cybersecurity by …

Promoting Community Identity Through Repurposing Vacant Land: City Park Design In Downtown Arlington, Dasom Phoebe Mun
Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive
As urbanization progressed rapidly in the mid-nineteenth century, people moved to cities for many reasons, and as a consequence, the volume of green spaces in the cities was reduced. Lands have been developed or redeveloped as urbanization developed. In this process, leftover spaces and vacant lands have been created. Urban vacant lands could be a problem for many cities. They might have aesthetic issues such as disordered or cluttered appearances, safety issues due to lack of maintenance, economic issues for it being wasted and so on (Kim et al., 2023). However, vacant lands in urban areas have become suitable assets …

Long oligodeoxynucleotides (ODNs) are segments of DNAs having over one hundred nucleotides (nt). They are typically assembled using enzymatic methods such as PCR and ligation from shorter 20 to 60 nt ODNs produced by automated de novo chemical synthesis. While these methods have made many projects in areas such as synthetic biology and protein engineering possible, they have various drawbacks. For example, they cannot produce genes and genomes with long repeats and have difficulty to produce sequences containing stable secondary structures. Here, we report a direct de novo chemical synthesis of 400 nt ODNs, and their isolation from the complex …
The Ninth Amendment: The "Hard Problem" Of U.S. Constitutional Law, Jorge M. Farinacci Fernós
The Ninth Amendment: The "Hard Problem" Of U.S. Constitutional Law, Jorge M. Farinacci Fernós
Journal Articles
Like with the mythical lamp that can grant any three wishes, federal courts in the United States have buried the Ninth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution deep within the sands of American law in order to avoid coming to terms with its potential regarding the protection of unenumerated constitutional rights. Courts have been able to do so, in part, because of the seemingly impossible task of extracting from the text and history of the Ninth Amendment sufficient elements needed to identify which unenumerated rights may be subject to judicial enforcement.
This impossibility is an illusion and is contrary to the …

Your Mission, Should You Choose To Attempt It, Is To Save The Mona Lisa! Gamification As A Method For Teaching Art, Caleb Ovard
Theses and Dissertations
To increase student engagement in their classroom, the author created an art curriculum using gamification methods that incorporates elements of tabletop role-playing games. The Role-playing Art Curriculum is a key element of this thesis. Possible research approaches involving game-based learning and gamification were examined to point toward future research and reflection regarding games and game-like content into an art curriculum. Action research methods were used to create and run the Role-playing Art Curriculum. The author concludes that the gamified curriculum took extra preparation and required more management to run then other traditional art curriculums.

The prevalence of cardiometabolic abnormalities is high globally. This is concerning since these abnormalities increase the risk of morbidity and mortality. Using noninvasive, low-cost, and ethnic-specific anthropometric indices is crucial for widespread screening and early detection of cardiometabolic abnormalities. In this cross-sectional study, we enrolled 221 Lebanese participants (62.9% females; mean age: 43.36 ± 16.05 years; mean body mass index (BMI): 28.43 ± 6.10 Kg/m2). The main outcome measure was cardiometabolic abnormality (CMA), defined as the presence of at least two or more non-anthropometric components of the Metabolic Syndrome. Several anthropometric indices: Total body fat percent, Conicity index, Abdominal volume …

Size-Dependent Behavior And Challenges In Ag/Al2o3/Au Memristors: An Investigation Into Miniaturization Effect, Catherine Huang
Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Independent Study
This study investigates the performance of Ag/Al2O3/Au memristors, focusing on devices with dimensions ranging from 400nm to 1um. It was observed that smaller devices (400nm and 600nm) consistently display Ohmic behavior, lacking a high-resistance state. This is attributed to increased current density and potential structural imperfections during fabrication. In contrast, larger devices (800nm and 1um) exhibit volatile threshold switching (VTS) and a notable delay in transitioning from high to low resistance states. The study suggests that this delay is due to the instability of conductive filaments in smaller volumes. Additionally, these larger memristors show short retention …

The strength of construction material is a crucial consideration in the process of structural design and construction. Conventional materials such as concrete or steel have been widely utilized due to their predictable material performance. However, a significant obstacle to the widespread use of bamboo in structural elements lies in the challenge of its standardization. Many previous research studies have explored bamboo’s load bearing capacity, but the information remains limited due to variations in species, size, age, physical properties, moisture content, and other factors, making it difficult to predict their load-bearing capacity. This study aims to propose Artificial Neural Network (ANN) …
