The Scholarship Of Rock Music: Knowledge Mapping Through Bibliography, Monica Berger
The Scholarship Of Rock Music: Knowledge Mapping Through Bibliography, Monica Berger
Publications and Research
Scholarship on rock and popular music has grown dramatically in volume and methodological variety and complexity including extensive use of interdisciplinary approaches. There currently is no comprehensive resource for scholars and educators to explore monographic scholarly literature on rock. I will showcase a new annotated bibliography, with a focus on disciplinarity and methodology, which provides a lens into how this scholarly discourse has evolved. This bibliography also makes visible broader trends regarding research topics in rock and popular music. This project will be a resource to academics and other authors, faculty designing and updating curricula, and librarians interested in building …

Componiendo El Núcleo: Una Exploración De La Bomba Y La Identidad Afroecuatoriana En El Valle De Chota, Ethan Guok
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
The Politics Of Popular Music In Iranian Cinema: A Case Study Of Dariush Mehrjui’S "Santouri" (2007), Ardavan Mofidi Tehrani
The Politics Of Popular Music In Iranian Cinema: A Case Study Of Dariush Mehrjui’S "Santouri" (2007), Ardavan Mofidi Tehrani
Regards
This article explores the restrictions placed on music creation and their broader societal implications in post-revolutionary Iran, focusing on Dariush Mehrjui’s renowned film, Santouri, released in 2007. The narrative of the film demonstrates the state’s censorship of music and cinema after the 1979 revolution, which parallels the film’s tribulations during its production and subsequent unofficial release. Generally, the limitations imposed on popular music, known locally as musiqi-e pāp, became a prominent theme, explored openly or subtly within the context of cinematic storytelling. I discuss how the film serves as a revealing mirror of the complex and ambivalent attitudes …

Despedidas Con Mariachis: Examining Covid-19'S Impact On Mexican Americans In Southern California, Jessie M. Vallejo, Latin American And Iberian Institute
LAII Events
Although the trope of silenced mariachis was common in early COVID-19 news stories about Los Angeles County, many mariachis were actively performing and supporting community wellbeing between 2020 and 2022. This talk discusses pre-existing sociopolitical challenges and reflects on the pandemic's traumatic impact on Mexican Americans in the region.
Dr. Vallejo's research areas focus on mariachi, music education, and Indigenous cultural-linguistic revitalization. She co-produced Smithsonian Folkways’ 2013 release ¡Así Kotama!: The Flutes of Otavalo, Ecuador. She has also published in Smithsonian Folklife Magazine, Ethnomusicology Forum, Sonocordia, and The Ethnomusicologists' Cookbook vol.2. Jessie is a founding member of ICTM's …

Potential Pathways To Culturally Relevant Licensure, Jeremy Reuben Fritts
Potential Pathways To Culturally Relevant Licensure, Jeremy Reuben Fritts
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Despite recent trends favoring the integration of vernacular music in higher education, there are still stakeholders who are resistant to change. This qualitative study seeks to account for such responses. By examining relevant literature relating to the movement and interviewing educators with substantial experience in the field, the researcher seeks to uncover potential pathways to music education licensure for college graduates specializing in bluegrass and roots music studies. This study also considers foreseeable advantages and impediments to the initiative, including classism, Euro-centric musical biases, the marginalization of likely participants, and educational mandates for cultural relevancy. The study cross-references and compares …
“Rare And Curious Covers”: Embroidered Book Bindings In Early Modern England, Christy Elaine Gordon Baty
“Rare And Curious Covers”: Embroidered Book Bindings In Early Modern England, Christy Elaine Gordon Baty
History Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity
Protestant devotional books with highly decorative embroidered bindings flourished in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth century like no other time in history. Indeed, the number of these objects extant in collections today attest to their importance. Although decorative embroidered book bindings on Protestant devotional works would seem to be a contradiction, it was a natural confluence of religious, economic, and societal factors that enabled women to assert both a private and a public identity. Because the explosion of printers in Europe brought Bibles and other books to a much wider audience at a time when women’s education and literacy …

Peruvian Musical Elements In Selected Peruvian Piano Compositions By Duncker Lavalle, Ayarza De Morales, And E. Valcárcel Arze, Gonzalo Aguilar
Dissertations
This research paper focuses on Peruvian musical elements used by three Peruvian composers active in the twentieth century: Luis Duncker Lavalle (1874-1922), Rosa Mercedes Ayarza de Morales (1881-1969), and Edgar Valcárcel Arze (1932-2010). The analysis is centered upon three solo piano works: Duncker’s Leggenda Appassionata (published 1964), Ayarza’s Marinera y Resbalosa (n.d.), and Valcárcel’s Cuatro Piezas Infantiles (1963). These composers represent a cross section, not only chronologically, but also geographically. Relevant Peruvian traditional music (such as mestizo music; Arequipan yaraví; música criolla: marinera, zamacueca; cueca chilena; as well as music of Cuzco and Puno—including from …

Creating Information-Literate Musicians In The Academic Library, Z. Sylvia Yang, Jessica M. Abbazio, Angela L. Pratesi
Library Faculty publications
For musicians, the act of creation is multifaceted: musicians perform, analyze, write, speak, and teach in highly collaborative and diverse environments. Information-literate musicians require training to understand and engage with the myriad kinds of content and materials inherent to the contemplation, study, creation, and enjoyment of music.
The various information needs of musicians requires creators to make many choices--from selecting a particular score edition or recording from many similar options, to employing a specific scholarly or pedagogical methodology to their work, musicians require the skills to critically evaluate information and determine its usefulness. Music’s ubiquity adds a further layer of …

The study employs qualitative content analysis to analyze select Nigerian music genres to examine how Nigeria is portrayed to international audiences and the economic benefits that can be derived from this form of branding. The analysis focuses on narrative themes of “the value of hard work,” “ethnic pride,” “lavish lifestyle,” and the impact of differences which were derived from the data. “Let A Hundred Flowers Bloom, To Discard The Old For The New.” The Building Of The Modern Chinese Orchestra, Ema Plafcan
Music Undergraduate Honors Theses
“Let a hundred flowers bloom, to discard the old for the new.” Mao Zedong first said this when outlining his expectations for artists under the regime of the Communist Party in 1954, but it is also a quote that embodies what the Modern Chinese Orchestra is and has been throughout time. This paper aims to analyze this Chinese instrumental tradition and how it represents the people of China past and present, both inside China and in its diaspora. It shows music as a powerful tool for creating a collective identity. Starting with influences from ancient China, origins in the folk …
Indigenous Genres On Digital Keyboards: Vitalizing Choral Worship In The Methodist Church Ghana, George Mensah Essilfie
Indigenous Genres On Digital Keyboards: Vitalizing Choral Worship In The Methodist Church Ghana, George Mensah Essilfie
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This research examines digital keyboard workstations for choral accompaniment in the Methodist Church Ghana from an Ethnodoxological perspective. The Methodist Church Ghana has a strong choral tradition and is known for using indigenous African musical genres to inspire congregational singing and liturgical music. Digital keyboards are adaptable and versatile, making them ideal for Christian worship and inspiring the Methodist Church Ghana composers to write and arrange music rooted in traditional African genres. Choral keyboardists often accompany choral ministrations using rhythmic patterns programmed and played on digital keyboard workstations. However, little academic research has been conducted on the spiritual implications of …
