Biosensor For Rapid And Accurate Detection Of Cardiovascular Biomarkers: Progress And Prospects In Biosensors, Sophia Nazir, Rabail Azhar Iqbal
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
The primary cause of death worldwide is cardiovascular disease (CVD), which has a considerable mortality rate. It is essential to identify cardiac biomarkers and heartbeat signals early to lower mortality. Conventional CVD examinations require costly hospital equipment for standard CVD examinations and electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring, both of which take time and are inconvenient. Recently, interest in developing biosensing technologies for rapid CVD marker screening has increased. As a result of advancements in nanotechnology and bioelectronics, novel biosensor platforms are being created to achieve quick detection, precise quantification, and continuous monitoring during disease progression. Research is being done on chemical, electrochemical, …
Spectral Music; Why Create Compositions With Such A Limited Palette?, Iain Mason
Spectral Music; Why Create Compositions With Such A Limited Palette?, Iain Mason
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses
Spectral Music: Why create compositions with such a limited palette? The question I am trying to answer is why the composers within the spectral movement of classical music created their compositions with such a limited and challenging palette of sounds. With the extreme wealth of musical knowledge and a rich tapestry of sounds and movements within the classical and contemporary musical world, why was it that the composers in question who I will be investigating; Gerard Grisey, Kaija Saaraiho, and James Tenney chose to write music with a limited palette of sounds? The music to generalise is made up from …

Towards Quantum Computing For Audio And Music Expression, Paulo Vitor Itaboraí
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses
This research delves into the initial approaches of the use of emerging Quantum Computing technologies in music practice, anchored on preliminary studies on Quantum Representation of Audio (QRA). The approach is interdisciplinary, and attempts to explore the object - QRA - both from a technical scope and an artistic scope. A systematic review unifies diverse QRA techniques, spotlighting the need to bring accessibility to these techniques and terminologies (dense in theoretical physics formalism) for a computer music and/or artistic audiences, in a didactic manner. In this review, some additional techniques initially only discussed for representing images are translated into audio. …
‘My Blood Is In It’: A Phenomenological Study Of International Doctoral Students’ Embodied Experience Of A University Campus, Anne Bentley
‘My Blood Is In It’: A Phenomenological Study Of International Doctoral Students’ Embodied Experience Of A University Campus, Anne Bentley
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses
Reflecting its Cartesian underpinnings, academic scholarship privileges discourse over embodiment, resulting in a lack of research about international doctoral students' bodily experience of Higher Education. International students represent a significant income stream for UK universities and offer the opportunity for the meeting of different cultures, minds and bodies. Using phenomenological theory and taking embodiment as its starting point, this thesis explores the implicit dimensions of international doctoral students' everyday experience of campus. Walking interviews, photo-elicitation and semi-structured interviews with eight international doctoral students yielded embodied, visual and discursive methods. Merleau-Ponty, Ahmed and Arendt were used to theorise the interrelated embodied, …
Explaining Organisational Business Process Adoption Mechanisms - A Critical Realist Perspective On Social Reflexivity And Process Affordances, Andreas Brönnimann
Explaining Organisational Business Process Adoption Mechanisms - A Critical Realist Perspective On Social Reflexivity And Process Affordances, Andreas Brönnimann
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The implementation of new business processes can be problematic for organisations. Employees tend towards reluctant behaviour when confronted with organisational change that requires adoption of new workflows and work tasks. The crucial importance of people affected by change has been highlighted in past research. While the adoption of new processes is beneficial to the organisation, deviations from or rejections of new processes can lead to increased risks, missed process goals, increased waste leading to lost revenue, and other unforeseeable outcomes.
However, the adoption of proposed processes by individuals only is less desirable, because the collective nature of processes requires choreographed …
Comparative Study On Development Of Novel Catalytic Oxidation For Removing Emerging Contaminants, Abdul H. Asif
Comparative Study On Development Of Novel Catalytic Oxidation For Removing Emerging Contaminants, Abdul H. Asif
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
‘Wastewater treatment’ is not itself a new concept, where global water bodies have been polluted since the evolution of mankind. As a result of human activities including domestic, industrial and commercial practices, levels of water pollution through aqueous contaminants are increasing every day. Moreover, rapid industrialisation and recent human progress has given rise to a new classification of pollution, that of emerging contaminants (ECs). Further, these chemicals are highly resistant to biodegradation and are capable of travelling, where they can penetrate from one part of the world to another. Whilst traditional wastewater treatment techniques, such as adsorption, might be effective …

Mass Sovereign Debt Litigation: A Computer-Assisted Analysis Of The Argentina Bond Litigation, Gregory Makoff, W. Mark C. Weidemaier
Mass Sovereign Debt Litigation: A Computer-Assisted Analysis Of The Argentina Bond Litigation, Gregory Makoff, W. Mark C. Weidemaier
Faculty Publications
This Article presents a computer-assisted analysis of the first large-scale mass litigation of sovereign debt claims. Between 2002 and 2016, hundreds of lawsuits were filed against Argentina in the United States, virtually all in the Southern District of New York. Historically, litigation against a foreign government would have involved a few hedge funds that had invested in debt at distressed prices. Argentina faced thousands of investors, including small retail bondholders, in litigation that more closely resembled a mass tort or federal multidistrict litigation than any prior episode involving a sovereign’s debt default.
To study this sprawling litigation, this Article combines …

This novel research sits at the intersection of augmented reality gameplay and government licenses for use of public property. Governments have long used licensing schema to assure public safety and order. Augmented reality gameplay on public lands presents a new, contested use of public property. Under our proposed licensing scheme, those wishing to engage in location-based augmented reality (LoBAR) gameplay on public lands would need a license. This proposal is akin to how governments—federal, state, and municipal—have authorized permit schema for use of public property, including rock climbing, geocaching, street performing, and film photography. Our Article offers sample legislation for …
The Nightmare Of Dream Advertising, Dustin Marlan
The Nightmare Of Dream Advertising, Dustin Marlan
Faculty Publications
Advertisers are attempting to market to us while we dream. This is not science fiction, but rather a troubling new reality. Using a technique dubbed “targeted dream incubation” (TDI), companies have begun inserting commercial messages into people’s dreams. Roughly, TDI works by: (1) creating an association during waking life using sensory cues (for example, a pairing of sounds, visuals, or scents); and (2) as the subject is drifting off to sleep, the association is again introduced with the goal of triggering related dreams with related subject matter. Based on a 2021 American Marketing Association survey, 77 percent of 400 companies …
Psychedelic Capitalism And The Perceptual Threshold, Dustin Marlan
Psychedelic Capitalism And The Perceptual Threshold, Dustin Marlan
Faculty Publications
This invited response to Mason Marks et al., Microdosing Psychedelics Under Local, State, and Federal Law examines how evolving psychedelic regulation may ultimately favor below‑perceptual‑threshold approaches—such as microdosing and nonsubjective psychoplastogens—over the traditional, above‑threshold psychedelic experience.
Because such developments risk marginalizing the culturally, spiritually, and cognitively significant psychedelic experience, the author contends that access to above‑threshold psychedelic states requires justification beyond clinical utility. Invoking principles of cognitive liberty, neurodiversity, and equitable access, the article recommends that decriminalization and supported adult‑use models accompany therapeutic frameworks to preserve the legal viability of non‑ordinary states of consciousness, even if below‑threshold medicines come to …
Secondary Courses Taught By Secondary Faculty: A (Personal) Call To Fully Integrate Skills Faculty And Skills Courses Into The Law School Curriculum Ahead Of The Nextgen Bar Exam, Oscar J. Salinas
Faculty Publications
This essay contends that law schools must reconsider how they educate future lawyers by elevating practical skills and the faculty who teach them, especially as the NextGen bar exam shifts toward assessing real‑world lawyering competencies. Through a blend of analysis and personal narrative, the author demonstrates how the traditional casebook‑Socratic model narrows the definition of merit, sidelines students whose strengths are not centered on rapid oral performance, and reinforces a hierarchy that undervalues skills faculty—who are often women and people of color—despite their central role in preparing students for practice.

Investigation And Development Of Titanium Nitride Solid-State Potentiometric Ph Sensor, Shimrith Paul Shylendra
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The measurement of pH value is crucial parameter in various fields like, drinking water monitoring, food preparation, biomedical and environmental applications. The most common device for pH sensing is the conventional pH glass electrode. While glass electrodes have several advantages, such as Nernstian sensitivity, superior ion selectivity, excellent stability, and extensive operating range, they have several key disadvantages. pH glass electrodes need to be stored in buffer solutions, they are fragile and have limited size and shape, making them impractical for some applications, such as being potentially used as miniature pH sensors for capsule endoscopy and ambulatory esophageal pH monitoring. …
A Critical Control Approach To Preventing Fatalities In Construction, Roberta J. Selleck
A Critical Control Approach To Preventing Fatalities In Construction, Roberta J. Selleck
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Workplace fatalities continue to occur within the Australian construction industry at an unacceptably high rate. Most fatalities can be attributed to worker exposure to fatal energies while conducting high risk tasks in a dynamic work environment. Construction fatalities are usually single fatality events related to occupational safety hazards which are either not recognised by workers or not consistently controlled through existing safety practices. By comparison other resources industries have lower fatality rates because of their focus on identifying the controls and verification activities needed to address Major Accident Events (MAEs) and Principal Hazards in a manner that prevents fatalities.

Aesthetic Choices: Defining The Range Of Aesthetic Views In Interactive Digital Media Including Games And 3d Virtual Environments (3d Ves), Hira Maqbool
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Defining aesthetic choices for interactive digital media such as games is a challenging task. Objective and subjective factors such as colour, symmetry, order and complexity, and statistical features among others play an important role for defining the aesthetic properties of interactive digital artifacts. Computational approaches developed in this regard also consider objective factors such as statistical image features for the assessment of aesthetic qualities. However, aesthetics for interactive digital media, such as games, requires more nuanced consideration than simple objective and subjective factors, for choosing a range of aesthetic features.
From the study it was found that the there is …
Plant-Herbivore Interactions In A Changing Climate And Implications For Seagrass Resilience, Caitlyn M. O'Dea
Plant-Herbivore Interactions In A Changing Climate And Implications For Seagrass Resilience, Caitlyn M. O'Dea
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Climate change is affecting herbivore distributions and abundance, resulting in intensified grazing pressure on foundation species such as seagrasses. This, coupled with other, rapid changes in estuarine ecosystems, may threaten the resilience of seagrass. While the overall resilience of seagrasses is generally well-studied, the timeframes of recovery have received comparatively little attention, particularly in temperate estuaries. This study investigated the recovery time of two colonising seagrasses (Halophila ovalis and Ruppia megacarpa) following various intensities of simulated grazing in two southwestern Australian estuaries. Simulated grazing treatments (25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% removal from 1 m2 plots) were applied in field experiments …

Carbon Geosequestration And Enhanced Oil Recovery In Geological Formations: Multi-Scale Analysis, Auby Baban
Carbon Geosequestration And Enhanced Oil Recovery In Geological Formations: Multi-Scale Analysis, Auby Baban
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Carbon geosequestration (CGS) has been recognized as a strategic solution to prevent/counter the catastrophic consequences of climate change. However, despite recent cutting-edge technical research, predicting quantitative CO2 trapping in geological formations via capillary trapping is currently scarce. Moreover, several aspects of multiphase flow characteristics of CO2/brine/rock systems, that greatly impact carbon capture and containment security, require further investigations. Furthermore, combining carbon geosequestration with Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) is an efficient and economically attractive technology to reduce global warming caused by emissions of anthropologic CO2 from the combustion of fossil fuels, whereby it offsets some of the costs of CO2 extraction. …
Fagotte Forgotten? The Bassoon In The Early Symphonies Of Mozart, Haydn And Contemporaries In The 1760s And 1770s, Katherine J. Walpole
Fagotte Forgotten? The Bassoon In The Early Symphonies Of Mozart, Haydn And Contemporaries In The 1760s And 1770s, Katherine J. Walpole
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This research project investigates the role of the bassoon in the basso of the early symphonies of Mozart, Haydn and Contemporaries in the 1760s and 1770s. It draws on surviving primary source material pertaining to bassoonists and orchestral practices across Europe before 1780. Autograph scores of Haydn, Mozart and his contemporaries usually scored early Classical symphonies for pairs of oboes, horns, two violin sections, viola and basso. Modern scholars have described these compositions as symphonies for pairs of oboes, pairs of horns and strings, and have translated basso to mean cellos and basses. Eliminating the eighteenth-century term basso has also …

The Influence Of Networks On Suppliers’ Sustainable Innovation In Public Procurement: Insights From Ghana’S Public Works Sector, Peter Adjei-Bamfo
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
In recent times, governments have been using their procurement function to drive innovation in firms’ product outcomes and to improve operational activities that pose sustainability challenges. Ghana, for example, is currently advancing and upgrading its public works infrastructure with revenues from its commercialised oil reserves to match and improve its anticipated middle-income economy status. Faced with several sustainability challenges, such as environmental pollution and resource depletion, desecration of cultural heritage sites and exposure of labour force to poor working conditions, public works infrastructure procurements constitute a larger proportion of government procurement expenditure, globally, compared with the procurement of goods and …
Downstream Air Dilution And Biomass Pulverisation Into Bluff-Body And Swirl Stabilised Confined Turbulent Jets, Syed E. Gillani
Downstream Air Dilution And Biomass Pulverisation Into Bluff-Body And Swirl Stabilised Confined Turbulent Jets, Syed E. Gillani
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Bluff-body and swirl-stabilised turbulent annular flows (single phase and multi-phase) find broad practical utility, especially in high-power non-premixed combustion applications. Their significance stems from features like their characteristic recirculation zones and intense upstream turbulence, both of which promote air-fuel mixing and aid in flame stabilisation. Moreover, in response to the push for low-emission and carbon-neutral fuel sources, there's a growing emphasis on integrating biomass, especially in its pulverised form, into major power generation systems. In practical gas turbine combustors featuring bluff-body and swirl stabilised flame burners, the incorporation of (air) side dilution jets plays a crucial role. These jets influence …

Study Of Spatial Reuse In Ieee 802.11ax Networks Over Propagation Models, Jun Peng, Paola Miller
Study Of Spatial Reuse In Ieee 802.11ax Networks Over Propagation Models, Jun Peng, Paola Miller
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
The paper studies the spatial reuse in IEEE 802.11ax networks over propagation models in ns3. The propagation models used in the study include the Friis model, the Nakagami model, and the combination of the two models. The results show that not all access points in an area benefit from the spatial reuse, and some even lose throughput. These results introduce the question of how to justify the spatial reuse for those access points who lose throughput, although the total throughput of the access points in the area benefits from the spatial reuse in general. The results also show that the …
Climate Choice Architecture, Felix Mormann
Climate Choice Architecture, Felix Mormann
Faculty Scholarship
Personal choices drive global warming nearly as much as institutional decisions. Yet, policymakers overwhelmingly target large-scale industrial facilities for reductions in carbon emissions, with individual and household emissions a mere afterthought. Recent advances in behavioral economics, cognitive psychology, and related fields have produced a veritable behavior change revolution. Subtle changes to the choice environment, or nudges, have improved stake-holder decision-making in a wide range of contexts, from healthier food choices to better retirement planning. But the vast potential of choice architecture remains largely untapped for purposes of climate policy and action. This Article explores that untapped potential and makes the …
