Preliminary Investigation Of The Potential Health Risks Of Non-Formfitting Body Armor With A Focus On Female Warfighters, Melissa Sutter, Catherine E. Johnson

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Introduction Body armor is an important piece of protective equipment for warfighters in battlefield environments. With more women now filling military roles, body armor designs may need to be further refined to accommodate the female anatomy instead of the male-based unisex designs. Unisex designs have been found to have negative effects on female warfighter performance, resulting in discomfort, breathing difficulty, and air gaps forming between the armor and torso. This study aimed to investigate increased injury risk because of air gaps from shock wave exposure on warfighters wearing nonform-fitting armor and the influence of material properties. Based on literature, lowered …

Emergency preparedness and security are comparatively new academic fields, but they have grown tremendously in the last ten years.1 Colleges and universities all over the United States and Canada are adding and expanding programs dedicated to various facets of these subjects. While the specific subtopics and focal areas can vary by program, they all explore threat assessment, risk management, and disaster mitigation in some capacity. Emergency preparedness or emergency management programs prepare students to pursue careers dealing with crisis mitigation and response, whether that crisis is a result of natural disaster, climate change, war, civil unrest, infrastructure failure, economic instability, …

Probabilistic Modeling, Learnability And Uncertainty Estimation For Interaction Prediction In Movie Rating Datasets, Jennifer Poernomo, Nicole Gabrielle Lee Tan, Rodrigo Alves, Antoine Ledent Sep 2025

Probabilistic Modeling, Learnability And Uncertainty Estimation For Interaction Prediction In Movie Rating Datasets, Jennifer Poernomo, Nicole Gabrielle Lee Tan, Rodrigo Alves, Antoine Ledent

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we examine the hypothesis that the interactions recorded in many Recommendation Systems datasets are distributed according to a low-rank distribution, i.e. a mixture of factorizable distributions. Surprisingly, we find that on several popular datasets, a simple non-negative matrix factorization method equals or outperforms more modern methods such as LightGCN, which indicates that the sampling distribution over interactions is indeed low-rank. Furthermore, we mathematically prove that low-rank distributions are learnable with a sparse number of observations (where m/n and r refer to the number of users/items and the non-negative rank respectively) both in terms of the total variation …

Apidocbooster: An Extract-Then-Abstract Framework Leveraging Large Language Models For Augmenting Api Documentation, Chengran Yang, Jiakun Liu, Bowen Xu, Christoph Treude, Yunbo Lyu, Junda He, Ming Li, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

API documentation is often the most trusted resource for programming. Many approaches have been proposed to augment API documentation by summarizing complementary information from external resources such as Stack Overflow. Existing extractive-based summarization approaches excel in producing faithful summaries that accurately represent the source content without input length restrictions. Nevertheless, they suffer from inherent readability limitations. On the other hand, our empirical study on the abstractive-based summarization method, i.e., GPT-4, reveals that GPT-4 can generate coherent and concise summaries but presents limitations in terms of informativeness and faithfulness. We introduce APIDocBooster, an extract-then-abstract framework that seamlessly fuses the advantages of …

Robface: A Test Suite For Efficient Robustness Evaluation Of Face Recognition Systems, Ruihan Zhang, Jun Sun Sep 2025

Robface: A Test Suite For Efficient Robustness Evaluation Of Face Recognition Systems, Ruihan Zhang, Jun Sun

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Face recognition is a widely used authentication technology in practice, where robustness is required. It is thus essential to have an efficient and easy-to-use method for evaluating the robustness of (possibly third-party) trained face recognition systems. Existing approaches to evaluating the robustness of face recognition systems are either based on empirical evaluation (e.g., measuring attacking success rate using state-of-the-art attacking methods) or formal analysis (e.g., measuring the Lipschitz constant). While the former demands significant user efforts and expertise, the latter is extremely time-consuming. In pursuit of a comprehensive, efficient, easy-to-use, and scalable estimation of the robustness of face recognition systems, …

Khaled Hosseini’S Judgment In The Kite Runner Towards Pashtun And Hazara Identities, Bilal Waziri, Dawod Mangal, Kamaldeen Kamal Sep 2025

Khaled Hosseini’S Judgment In The Kite Runner Towards Pashtun And Hazara Identities, Bilal Waziri, Dawod Mangal, Kamaldeen Kamal

Journal of Research Initiatives

This book review offers a compelling examination of Khaled Hosseini's portrayal of Pashtun and Hazara identities in his acclaimed novel, *The Kite Runner*. Through a literary-ethnographic lens, the research delves into how narrative techniques can construct, amplify, or distort ethnic representations, particularly within the tumultuous backdrop of Afghanistan. The novel is scrutinized for its stark depiction of Pashtuns as oppressors and Hazaras as perennial victims, which risks perpetuating a simplistic and problematic singular narrative. Employing a library-based qualitative approach, this paper thoughtfully interprets textual evidence within the rich sociocultural and historical landscape of Afghanistan. The findings reveal that while the …

Developments in digital technologies have complicated existing debates around the ethics of cataloging war crimes and human rights violations. Digital humanities methods of evaluating digital scholarship can help to construct a framework for evaluating war crimes databases, a process which requires a fine-tuned critical analysis aimed towards understanding the purpose of compiling the database, the platform or media template through which the database is presented, and the communicative potentials of the database. The following paper presents a survey of the existing literature on war crime databases and the politics of memory; a model of how war crimes database analyses may …

Relevant Deformations Of Brane Brick Models, Georgios P. Goulas Sep 2025

Relevant Deformations Of Brane Brick Models, Georgios P. Goulas

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The thesis studies relevant deformations of 2d gauge theories with $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ supersymmetry, realized on the worldvolume of D1-branes probing toric Calabi-Yau 4-folds. Brane brick models are the primary means for engineering such theories and streamlining their connection to geometry. In this thesis, we relevant deformations of brane brick models, focusing on a specific class of deformations in which the initial and final theories are both described by brane brick models. Relevant deformations serve as an additional, systematic way of generating these theories, as well as uncovering connections between them. Within the framework of brane engineering, these deformations acquire a geometric …

Structural Characterization Of A Tarantula Toxin And Its Interactions With Lipid Bilayers And Voltage-Gated Sodium Channels, Krishnakoli Adhikary

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Voltage-gated ion channels are membrane protein complexes. They allow the selective flow of their respective ions down an electrochemical gradient through a central ion conduction pore surrounded by four voltage-sensing domains (VSDs). Various neurological and cardiovascular diseases are caused by mutations in voltage-gated ion channels (VGICs). One of the biggest challenges today is addiction to opioid medication. Coming up with non-opioid drug leads can be a real blessing for society. This is where voltage-gated sodium channel research comes in. Nav1.7, Nav1.8, and Nav1.9 are responsible for pain sensations. Loss or gain of function in …

Recent studies have highlighted the pivotal role of the cGAS‐STING pathway in cancer immunotherapy. However, clinical trials with cGAS‐STING pathway agonists have faced setbacks thanks to their short biological half‐life, lack of tumor specificity, and potential to promote tumor immune evasion. To address these challenges, a novel exosome‐based drug delivery platform, termed cmExoaCD11b is developed, designed to precisely target and reprogram the tumor microenvironment (TME) in situ for pancreatic cancer immunotherapy. cmExoaCD11b is engineered to encapsulate high copy numbers of IL‐12 mRNA and 2′3’‐cGAMP (cGAMP) and is functionalized with CD11b antibodies for targeted delivery to macrophages. Notably, cmExoaCD11b facilitated the …

Most-Favored-Nation's False Promises, George A. Bermann Sep 2025

Most-Favored-Nation's False Promises, George A. Bermann

Faculty Scholarship

Most-favoured-nation (MFN) protection seems decidedly straightforward both in meaning and operation, certainly as compared to other investment protections, such as fair and equitable treatment, which are plagued with indeterminacy. But the clarity of meaning and ease of application of MFN clauses are largely illusory. An examination of arbitral case law reveals seriously underestimated uncertainties surrounding the doctrine’s scope and workings. But the problems with MFN run far deeper. MFN may have the virtue of enhancing the level of protection of foreign investments. But States do not only extend benefits; they also withhold them. MFN disrespects the balance that States sought …

Many peptide drugs rely on nonproteinogenic amino acids and chemical modifications for improved activity and proteolytic stability. However, these features also make drug production expensive and challenging to scale. Here, we engineered small, linear, proteinogenic peptides that bind human programmed death-ligand 1 (hPD-L1) with high affinity and stability using mRNA display affinity maturation. The resulting peptides, SPAM2 and SPAM3, have antibody-like affinities for hPD-L1 (dissociation constants between ~250 and 300 pM) and are selective for hPD-L1. Both SPAM2 and SPAM3 compete with hPD-L1 ligands known to interact with the programmed cell death protein 1 site and are stable in human …

Immunosuppressive myeloid cells are important in a variety of physiological and pathological contexts, including tumor development, but how hormones might regulate their activity is unclear. Secretogranins, a family of secretory proteins in endocrine and neuronal cells, are proposed to function as prohormones or hormones, but their specific receptors are unknown. Here we show that secretogranin 2 (SCG2), a granin family member, functionally interacts with leukocyte immunoglobulin-like receptor B4 (LILRB4) on monocytic cells. Tumor-derived SCG2 promotes tumor growth in myeloid-specific LILRB4 transgenic mice in a T cell-dependent manner, whereas SCG2 deficiency in host mice impairs tumor progression and reduces infiltration of …

Minimally Invasive, Bioadaptive Multimodal Sensor Probe With Safe Deployment For Real-Time Acute Compartment Syndrome Diagnosis, Seung Gi Seo, Amanda M Westman, William Moritz, Joseph Ribaudo, Mitchell A Pet, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Acute Compartment Syndrome (ACS) is a serious medical condition that arises from increased pressure within osteofascial compartments, leading to impaired blood flow and potential tissue damage. Early and accurate diagnosis is critical for preventing permanent damage. Current methods rely largely on qualitative assessments with limited accuracy, and those that exploit invasive pressure measurements often prove inadequate. Herein, a soft materials-based multimodal sensor probe is introduced, as well as the mechanical and thermal influences to monitor intra-compartmental pressure, tissue oxygen saturation (StO
