Remote Teaching For Collaboration And Creative Problem-Solving Skills In Undergraduate Urban Science: A Case Study, Yuan Lai, Rea Lavi
Journal of Education Studies
Conventional urban studies pedagogy approaches rely on highly situated experience through site visits, ground surveys, and neighborhood engagement that require learning on the scene with social interaction. The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted higher education worldwide, with undergraduate urban studies education being no exception. Such public health protocols have caused unfortunate disruptions but have also created unique opportunities for experimenting with new learning approaches augmented by information technology. This paper describes actions and reactions towards learning adaptation throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. This two-week learning unit challenged instructors’ facilitation of students’ collaborative and creative problem-solving skills. The findings reveal how we (a) …

Argumentation Practice In Engineering Design Process, Tharuesean Prasoplarb, Pongprapan Pongsophon, Ekgapoom Jantarakantee, Chatree Faikhamta
Journal of Education Studies
Argumentation practice is consisted in science and engineering practices (SEPs) that play a crucial role in shifting science education from “knowing science” to “doing science” while also challenging the learner to solve real-world problems. However, teaching argumentation practice in science classrooms has become a challenge for teachers in regard to distinguishing argumentation from constructing scientific explanations, understanding the nature of argumentation, and embedding argumentation in STEM to a more authentic context. This article aims to draw the teaching of argumentation practice with the engineering design process through investigating the ecology of engineering features synthesized from the nature of engineering, nature …

Building Social Media Literacy In The Russian Language Classroom, Kelly Knickmeier Cummings
Russian Language Journal
This article presents ways to teach media literacy (ML) skills in Russian language classrooms with particular focus on developing proficiencies to navigate social media (SM) where information disorder is a critical concern. Because of its numerous configurations and applications, SM is understood broadly as “the creation and exchange of user-generated content.” After outlining critical concerns surrounding SM use, the discussion focuses on three conditions that affect the development of ML skills when trying to engage meaningfully online: cognitive vulnerabilities, unreliable narrators, and populist rhetoric. Developing an awareness of how these three conditions on SM impact decision-making and behavior online equips …

Constructing A Course On Russian Media Analysis For Learners At Ilr 3+/4 Proficiency, Olga Mukhortova
Russian Language Journal
The proficiency movement of the 1980s and ‘90s in foreign language teaching and learning demonstrated that U. S. students can attain Intermediate-level proficiency by the end of a four-year post-secondary course of study. Language programs can now pay more attention to enabling students to reach the Advanced1 and Superior levels (ACTFL, 2012; Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR); Martin, 2020, p. 43). One can observe the particular demand for ILR 3/4 speakers from the U. S. government in the diversity of state-sponsored initiatives in foreign languages aiming for Superior-level (ILR 3/3+) and higher proficiency. Understandably, the need for speakers of Russian at …

Algorithms For Synthesis Of Adaptive Control Systems With A Customized Model Using The Speed Gradient Method, Jasur Sevinov, Oxunjon Boborayimov
Chemical Technology, Control and Management
Algorithms are considered for the synthesis of adaptive control systems with a customized model based on the speed gradient method. For the synthesis of adaptive control systems, the identification approach is based on obtaining estimates of the unknown parameters in the object. By calculating the speed gradient, identification algorithms with an explicit and implicit customized model were obtained as well as that in sliding modes. A joint solution is given to the interrelated problems of identifying parameters with insufficient current information. The position of an object is about assessing the state with insufficient a priori information about its parameters. This …

Dual Mode Control Of An Inverted Pendulum: Design, Analysis And Experimental Evaluation, Laura Alvarez Hidalgo, Ian Howard
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
We present an inverted pendulum design using readily available V-slot rail components and 3D printing to construct custom parts. To enable the examination of different pendulum characteristics, we constructed three pendulum poles of different lengths. We implemented a brake mechanism to modify sliding friction resistance and built a paddle that can be attached to the ends of the pendulum poles. A testing rig was also developed to consistently apply disturbances by tapping the pendulum pole, characterizing balancing performance. We perform a comprehensive analysis of the behavior and control of the pendulum. This begins by considering its dynamics, including the nonlinear …

Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: An improved SABAS is proposed to improve the safety and path smoothing of UAV missions in urban multi-obstacle environments and to obtain the shortest path. The algorithm no longer completely depends on the difference of odor concentration between the left and the right tentacles of beetle when exploring the path for position update. Instead, it makes full use of the strong searching ability of BAS algorithm, and introduces the annealing algorithm to add the neighborhood position solution of the next position, and finally selects the next best position from the neighborhood position solution. Metropolis criterion of annealing algorithm is …

Abstract: Following the large-scale entry of distributed new energy into the network, the uncertainty factor of the distribution network increases significantly, and the difficulty of reactive power optimization scheduling increases accordingly. Traditional optimization solutions have many limitations and shortcomings, and a dynamic reactive power optimization scheme for active distribution networks based on a multi-scenario approach is proposed. The mathematical modeling is carried out separately for the uncertainty of new energy and load, and the multi-scenario method is used to transform the uncertainty problem into a deterministic problem. A mathematical model is constructed on the distribution network side to pursue the …
