Theoretical Analysis Of Oled Performances Of Some Aromatic Nitrogen-Containing Ligands, Mustafa Eli̇k
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
It is well-known that tris(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum (Alq3) complex and N,N'diphenyl-N,N'-bis(3-methylphenyl)-1,1'- diphenyl-4,4'-diamine compound (TPD) are widely used as electron transfer material (ETL) and hole transfer material (HTL) in organic light emitting diode (OLED) structure, respectively. Considering the reference materials, in the present work, the OLED performances of some cyclic aromatic structures such as 4,4'azopyridine [AZPY], 4,4'-bipyridine [BIPY], 1,2-bis[4'-(4-methylphenyl)2,2':6'2' '-terpyridin6-yl]ethyne (BISTERPY), 5,5'-diamino-2,2'-bipyridine (DABP), dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'c]phenazine (DPP), 4,7-phenanthroline (PHEN) including nitrogen atom have been theoretically analyzed. It is important to note that B3LYP/6-31G(d) and B3LYP/TZP levels of the theory were taken into account for the calculations about monomeric and dimeric structures, respectively. Additionally, the …

Cascade molecules are nearly uniform-sized macromolecules of small molecules or linear polymer cores built around symmetric branching units. A wide range of biological properties can be achieved with phosphorus-containing dendrimers, depending on their terminal functions, ranging from biomaterials to imaging, drug delivery, and acting as a drug by themselves. This feature article presents significant examples of phosphorus-containing dendrimers used to develop biochips, support cell cultures, carry or deliver biomacromolecules and drugs, bioimaging, and combinational benefits. Because of the thermal stability, ferrocene function, and physical and chemical properties of phosphorus, dendrimers show greater rigidity, mobility, and strength. These dendrimers will be …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry
In the present study, molecularly imprinted polymers were synthesized using caffeic acid (CA) as a template molecule and then used for the extraction of CA and chlorogenic acid (CLA) from complex matrices. Syntheses were carried out in tetrahydrofuran as porogenic solvent using 4-vinyl pyridine, methacrylic acid, acrylamide, and 1-vinyl imidazole as monomers, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as crosslinker and 2,2'-azobisisobutyronitrile as initiator. In polymerization processes, different ratios of the template:monomer:crosslinker (T:M:CrL) were used to obtain the most suitable polymer. Caffeic acid:4-vinylpiridine:ethylene glycol dimethacrylate's 1:4:16 mole ratio of MIP was determined as the most convenient polymer for CA recognition. In addition, nonimprinted …

Comparison Of 2d And 3d-Based U-Net Architectures For Image Restoration In Structured Illumination Microscopy, Bereket Kebede
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Recent developments using deep learning (DL) super-resolution in structured-illumination microscopy (SIM), have improved speed in two-dimensional (2D) image restoration and minimized the impact of noise. We have extended this 2D DL technique to 3D by augmenting the 2D convolutional layers to 3D convolutional layers in a 3D U-Net DL network. We demonstrate experimentally that this extension improves lateral and axial resolution in the final 3D restoration compared to the resolution achieved by axially stacking the outputs of the 2D U-Net. To achieve this, we performed 3D processing on data acquired using 3D Structured Illumination Microscopy (3D-SIM) of subcellular biological samples. …

The Toxin Complex (Tc) superfamily consists of toxin translocases that contribute to the targeting, delivery, and cytotoxicity of certain pathogenic Gram-negative bacteria. Membrane receptor targeting is driven by the A-subunit (TcA), which comprises IgG-like receptor binding domains (RBDs) at the surface. To better understand XptA2, an insect specific TcA secreted by the symbiont

Mitochondrial permeability transition pore (MPTP) formation contributes to ischemia-reperfusion injury in the heart and several degenerative diseases, including muscular dystrophy (MD). MD is a family of genetic disorders characterized by progressive muscle necrosis and premature death. It has been proposed that the MPTP has two molecular components, the adenine nucleotide translocase (ANT) family of proteins and an unknown component that requires the chaperone cyclophilin D (CypD) to activate. This model was examined in vivo by deleting the gene encoding ANT1 (Slc25a4) or CypD (Ppif) in a δ-sarcoglycan (Sgcd) gene–deleted mouse model of MD, revealing …

Alzheimer's disease, the most common age-related neurodegenerative disease, is characterized by tau aggregation and associated with disrupted circadian rhythms and dampened clock gene expression. REV-ERBα is a core circadian clock protein which also serves as a nuclear receptor and transcriptional repressor involved in lipid metabolism and macrophage function. Global REV-ERBα deletion has been shown to promote microglial activation and mitigate amyloid plaque formation. However, the cell-autonomous effects of microglial REV-ERBα in healthy brain and in tauopathy are unexplored. Here, we show that microglial REV-ERBα deletion enhances inflammatory signaling, disrupts lipid metabolism, and causes lipid droplet (LD) accumulation specifically in male …

Sustainable Development For Mobile Health Apps Using The Human-Centered Design Process, Qingfan An, Marjorie M Kelley, Audra Hanners, Po-Yin Yen
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Well-documented scientific evidence indicates that mobile health (mHealth) apps can improve the quality of life, relieve symptoms, and restore health for patients. In addition to improving patients' health outcomes, mHealth apps reduce health care use and the cost burdens associated with disease management. Currently, patients and health care providers have a wide variety of choices among commercially available mHealth apps. However, due to the high resource costs and low user adoption of mHealth apps, the cost-benefit relationship remains controversial. When compared to traditional expert-driven approaches, applying human-centered design (HCD) may result in more useable, acceptable, and effective mHealth apps. In …

Citrus reshni hort. ex Tanaka (Cleopatra mandarin) is a salt-tolerant citrus rootstock that has the unique ability to grow and complete its life cycle in the presence of high concentrations of salt, unlike other salt sensitive Citrus species. Having this great advantage, we were intrigued to investigate its macro- and micromorphological characters for identification of the plant, in addition, SCoT primers were used to differentiate C. reshni from two closely related species viz., C. deliciousa and C. reticulate Blanco. As well, the plant’s rbcL barcode sequence was generated and submitted to GenBank for future authentication. Moreover, C. reshni juice was …
Assessing Threats To Plant Populations: Linking Pollinator Differences To Patterns Of Plant Fitness And Population Genetics, Rieka Yu
Dissertations
Land use change is a major driver of biodiversity loss and consequently has led to the loss of genetic diversity in many plant populations due to declines in population sizes and an increase in spatial isolation. However, not all plant populations respond similarly to land-use change, suggesting there are additional mechanisms mediating plant population genetic patterns. Here, I examine the role of pollinators as this mediating factor. In Chapter 1 I conducted a meta-analysis to investigate how different types of pollinators drive changes in gene flow for plant populations in disturbed habitats, finding that different types of pollinators mediate different …

Institutional authority and responsibility for allocating water to ecosystems (“ecologically available water” [EAW]) is spread across local, state, and federal agencies, which operate under a range of statutes, mandates, and planning processes. We use a case study of the Upper Missouri Headwaters Basin in southwestern Montana, United States, to illustrate this fragmented institutional landscape. Our goals are to (a) describe the patchwork of agencies and institutional actors whose intersecting authorities and actions influence the EAW in the study basin; (b) describe the range of governance mechanisms these agencies use, including laws, policies, administrative programs, and planning processes; and (c) assess …

What It Means To Have Meaning: Ai’S Poetic Appropriation Of The Human Imagination, Samuel Louis Spencer
Masters Theses
This thesis is an exploration of human imagination and creativity as it pertains to poetry. With the rise of “intelligent” machines, it is the duty of scholars, thinkers, philosophers, and artists to gauge the ethics of using robots to create art, create information, and create in general. With that in mind, this thesis aims to distinguish the definitions of natural and artificial intelligence. This distinction is at the heart of what makes poetry inherently human. AI poses a threat to poetry and the act of artistic expression. Additionally, AI poses a threat to the human imagination. The aim of the …

After volunteering with a nonprofit that brings free medical care to people in need, Gardner-Webb University senior biology major, Marissa DiMatteo, knew the organization could help many people in the Shelby/Boiling Springs area. “I saw the relief it brought to the communities, and I was told about the opportunity to bring them to my community, so I filled out their form,” related Dimatteo, who is president of the Pre-Health Society. “I brought the idea to Dr. (Nicole) Waters, who helped me achieve this.”
Seasonal Top-Down Effects Of Fish On Benthic Macroinvertebrates And Periphyton In A Coldwater Michigan Stream, Travis John Ellens
Seasonal Top-Down Effects Of Fish On Benthic Macroinvertebrates And Periphyton In A Coldwater Michigan Stream, Travis John Ellens
Masters Theses
Fish can have strong top-down effects on their prey through both direct predation and non-consumptive effects in streams. We conducted manipulative field experiments to test the strength of fish predation on benthic macroinvertebrates at the patch scale in Stegman Creek. Stegman Creek is a small (0.39 m3/s at baseflow), groundwater-fed stream in western Michigan with abundant mottled sculpin (Cottus bairdii) and brown trout (Salmo trutta) acting as benthic predators. We hypothesized that fish predation decreases macroinvertebrate density, thereby increasing periphyton biomass through a reduction in density of grazing macroinvertebrates. We placed paired predator-exclusion cages …
Effect Of Age At Injury On Neuroinflammatory Response, Microstructural Outcomes, And Function Following Traumatic Brain Injury, Sydney J. Oswalt Reitz
Effect Of Age At Injury On Neuroinflammatory Response, Microstructural Outcomes, And Function Following Traumatic Brain Injury, Sydney J. Oswalt Reitz
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a significant public health concern. Elderly individuals are more likely to be hospitalized and die from a TBI than younger victims, and experience worse outcomes along a series of clinical and functional endpoints. Studies exploring the mechanisms responsible for these outcome disparities are limited. As aging has been demonstrated to enhance baseline neuroinflammatory profile and is associated with synaptopathic neurodegenerative conditions linked to TBI, this thesis study sought to better characterize the relationship between aging-related neuroinflammation, microstructural—including synaptic—endpoints, and functional outcome following TBI. To this end, mice were subjected to diffuse and focal experimental brain …
Inter-Areal Communication In Posterior Parietal Cortex Supporting Eye-Hand And Bimanual Coordination, Jung Uk Kang
Inter-Areal Communication In Posterior Parietal Cortex Supporting Eye-Hand And Bimanual Coordination, Jung Uk Kang
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Understanding inter-areal communication is crucial for systems neuroscience. Much of the processing in the brain involves communication between different areas. Sensory areas must send information to motor areas, and motor areas must communicate with each other if different body parts are to be coordinated. For example, coordinating movements of the two arms likely requires interactions between motor areas in the two hemispheres. We therefore hypothesize that bimanual and eye-hand coordination relies on interhemispheric communication, and the most direct path for information exchange between the two hemispheres is through the corpus callosum. By reversibly blocking the callosal pathways connecting the left …

Walking exhibits stride-to-stride variations. Given ongoing perturbations, these variations critically support continuous adaptations between the goal-directed organism and its surroundings. Here, we report that stride-to-stride variations during self-paced overground walking show cascade-like intermittency—stride intervals become uneven because stride intervals of different sizes interact and do not simply balance each other. Moreover, even when synchronizing footfalls with visual cues with variable timing of presentation, asynchrony in the timings of the cue and footfall shows cascade-like intermittency. This evidence conflicts with theories about the sensorimotor control of walking, according to which internal predictive models correct asynchrony in the timings of the cue …

An object is chiral when it holds no lines of symmetry. This quality naturally occurs in chemistry and biology. When an object is chiral it has a unique handedness and objects of opposite chirality are called enantiomers. The importance of handedness was brought to light in the 1960’s when a racemic mixture of thalidomide enantiomers was given to pregnant women. One enantiomer was able to treat morning sickness while the other caused severe birth defects. This case brought to light how enantiomers have unique properties from each other even though they are similar materials. With this knowledge chiral nanomaterials must …
