Variable Light Penetration And Chlorophyll Concentrations From A Vertical Profiler In The Gulf Of Maine, With Implications For Remote Sensing And Ecosystem Modeling, Terence W. O'Brien Sep 2023

Variable Light Penetration And Chlorophyll Concentrations From A Vertical Profiler In The Gulf Of Maine, With Implications For Remote Sensing And Ecosystem Modeling, Terence W. O'Brien

Master's Theses and Capstones

Variability in light field penetration into the ocean alters both radiant heat flux and oceanic primary production. Both are increasingly important in the context of quantifying biologically-mediated atmospheric carbon fluxes and sea surface temperature increase in a changing climate. Accurate determination of light penetration into the upper ocean depends upon accurate estimates of the depth-resolved water absorption and attenuation properties through the water column, properties that are often assumed homogeneous vertically and slowly variant in time. This thesis explores all-new Gulf of Maine datasets collected using a moored vertical profiler that provides sub-hourly light attenuation profiles with sub-m vertical resolution …

Rare Earth Element Distributions In Forest Soils Across Bedrock Gradients In New Hampshire And Vermont, Ashley Grengs Sep 2023

Rare Earth Element Distributions In Forest Soils Across Bedrock Gradients In New Hampshire And Vermont, Ashley Grengs

Master's Theses and Capstones

Within Earth surface systems, forests factor critically in carbon cycling and sequestration and accordingly play an important role in many climate change mitigation strategies. Predictive models of carbon storage require assessments of carbon storage as well as nutrient cycling, which, in turn, has long-term impacts on carbon storage. Nutrient allocations affect tree biomass, leaf growth, stem density, and biodiversity. Yet, bedrock contributions to nutrient allocations are not routinely quantified, even though bedrock compositions can influence soil types, soil pH, and tree species within forest.

Here, I expand on previously developed approaches to conduct a comparative study between eight sites across …

Evaluation Of A Wave Powered Water Pump Performance By Ocean Field Testing And Wec-Sim Modeling, Chelsea Kimball

Master's Theses and Capstones

A rising demand for macroalgae (or seaweed) has led researchers to seek out methods of increasing macroalgae aquaculture yields. Macroalgae is a food product, and may be used in biofuel, animal feed, and fertilizer. Applying upwelling technology to macroalgae aquaculture has been shown to increase biomass yield. A wave-powered upwelling device (or water pump) generates cold, nutrient-rich water flow to the surface of an aquaculture operation. A wave pump device developed at University of New Hampshire was refurbished and outfitted with instrumentation to determine its performance. Testing in the laboratory on both the device and instrumentation was conducted to prepare …

Understanding The Experiences And Associated Symptomology Of Disclosers And Non-Disclosers Of Sexual Victimization, Kaitlin Carson

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

ABSTRACT

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, as many as 43% of women report experiencing some form of sexual victimization, with the highest rates occurring in emerging adulthood. It is estimated that 75% of survivors disclose this experience to someone else; the remainder of survivors keep the experience to themselves. While disclosure can be therapeutic, there are multiple factors that can complicate the disclosure process for sexual victimization survivors. There is limited research investigating why some women choose to disclose sexual victimization experiences and how their reasons may relate to psychopathology. Additionally, extant research primarily focuses on …

Electrophysiological Signatures Of Stress Adaptability In The Bnst-Vta Pathway, Yuka Miura Sep 2023

Electrophysiological Signatures Of Stress Adaptability In The Bnst-Vta Pathway, Yuka Miura

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Chronic stress has detrimental effects on psychological and physiological health. Incapability to adapt to chronic stress can lead to depression, anxiety disorders, and addiction. The brain regions critical for reward processing share diverse physiological and molecular changes linked to depressive-like behaviors as a result of chronic stress. Cumulative evidence shows that counteraction or prevention of these alterations in neurons, occasionally in a projection-specific manner, can enhance stress adaptation or resilience.

Chronic stress induces various changes in the brain, including in the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST) and the ventral tegmental area (VTA). The neural projections from the BNST …

The vertebrate brain emerged more than ~500 million years ago in common evolutionary ancestors. To systematically trace its cellular and molecular origins, we established a spatially resolved cell type atlas of the entire brain of the sea lamprey—a jawless species whose phylogenetic position affords the reconstruction of ancestral vertebrate traits—based on extensive single-cell RNA-seq and in situ sequencing data. Comparisons of this atlas to neural data from the mouse and other jawed vertebrates unveiled various shared features that enabled the reconstruction of cell types, tissue structures and gene expression programs of the ancestral vertebrate brain. However, our analyses also revealed …

Gut dysbiosis contributes to Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pathogenesis, and Bacteroides strains are selectively elevated in AD gut microbiota. However, it remains unknown which Bacteroides species and how their metabolites trigger AD pathologies. Here we show that Bacteroides fragilis and their metabolites 12-hydroxy-heptadecatrienoic acid (12-HHTrE) and Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) activate microglia and induce AD pathogenesis in neuronal C/EBPβ transgenic mice. Recolonization of antibiotics cocktail-pretreated Thy1-C/EBPβ transgenic mice with AD patient fecal samples elicits AD pathologies, associated with C/EBPβ/Asparaginyl endopeptidase (AEP) pathway upregulation, microglia activation, and cognitive disorders compared to mice receiving healthy donors’ fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT). Microbial 16S rRNA sequencing …

Lysyl hydroxylase 2 (LH2) catalyzes the formation of highly stable hydroxylysine aldehyde-derived collagen cross-links (HLCCs), thus promoting lung cancer metastasis through its capacity to modulate specific types of collagen cross-links within the tumor stroma. Using 1 and 2 from our previous high-throughput screening (HTS) as lead probes, we prepared a series of 1,3-diketone analogues, 1−18, and identified 12 and 13 that inhibit LH2 with IC50’s of approximately 300 and 500 nM, respectively. Compounds 12 and 13 demonstrate selectivity for LH2 over LH1 and LH3. Quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) modeling indicates that the selectivity of 12 and 13 may stem from …

Donald Trump’S Contribution To The Study Of Politics And The Life Sciences, John Hibbing Sep 2023

Donald Trump’S Contribution To The Study Of Politics And The Life Sciences, John Hibbing

Department of Political Science: Faculty Publications

If the life sciences are to have much to say about politics, there needs to be a universal element to political orientations. In this essay, I argue that the recent prominence of nativist, law-and-order, populist politicians reveals the nature of this universal element. All social units have to address bedrock dilemmas about how to deal with norm violators and how welcoming to be to outsiders as well as to proponents of new lifestyles. Might differences on these core dilemmas be the universal element of political life? Using the followers of one of the most prominent examples of a nativist political …

What Is It Like To Be A Brain Organoid? Phenomenal Consciousness In A Biological Neural Network, Ivanna Montoya, Daniel Montoya

College of Humanities and Social Sciences

It has been shown that three-dimensional self-assembled multicellular structures derived from human pluripotent stem cells show electrical activity similar to EEG. More recently, neurons were successfully embedded in digital game worlds. The biologically inspired neural network (BNN), expressing human cortical cells, was able to show internal modification and learn the task at hand (predicting the trajectory of a digital ball while moving a digital paddle). In other words, the system allowed to read motor information and write sensory data into cell cultures. In this article, we discuss Neural Correlates of Consciousness (NCC) theories, and their capacity to predict or even …

Journal of Applied Sciences and Nanotechnology

The presence of multiple phases/ components within a nanocomposite material impacts its properties. Therefore, there is a need to estimate the phase fraction of each element present in a sample. Spurr-Myers proposed a valuable formula for calculating the rutile and anatase phase fraction of a TiO2 sample from X-ray diffraction. However, this formula is dedicated to TiO2 and is inapplicable to samples that contain more than two phases. The present research proposed a simple method for quantifying the phase fraction of all types of nanomaterials consisting of two or more phases. The precision/ accuracy test, conducted by multiplying the total …
