Mass Shootings In The United States, Sydney Livingston Sep 2023

Mass Shootings In The United States, Sydney Livingston

Ballard Brief

High rates of mass shootings are becoming a uniquely American problem; the US makes up 73% of the world’s mass shootings, yet makes up only 4.25% of the world’s population. School shootings, in particular, have increased dramatically in the US since the Columbine High School shooting in 1999, an event many perpetrators have since drawn upon as inspiration. There is a strong divide of opinions in the nation regarding how firearm deaths should be reduced, which has complicated and slowed progress in identifying effective solutions. Each mass shooting causes additional shootings to occur, and each one takes a toll on …

Evidence That Bivalve Burrowing Is Mediated By Serotonin Receptors: Activation Of Foot Inflation And Protrusion By Serotonin, Serotonergic Ligands And Ssri-Type Antidepressants In Three Species Of Freshwater Bivalve, Peter P. Fong, Rebecca Blaszczyk, Mary Butler, Jake Stergio Sep 2023

Fong, Rebecca Blaszczyk, Mary Butler, Jake Stergio

Biology Faculty Publications

Foot inflation and protrusion in bivalve mollusks is part of a sequence of events necessary for burrowing into the substrate. Although this process been observed after exogenous exposure to the neurotransmitter serotonin [5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT)] and by some selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) type antidepressants, no study has shown that foot inflation and protrusion as a precursor to burrowing is under serotonergic control. In order to elucidate the physiological mechanism mediating this response, we tested over 2,000 freshwater bivalves in three species by exposing them to 5-HT, two 5-HT receptor agonists, two receptor antagonists and five antidepressants. Fingernail clams (Sphaerium striatinum), …

Pathology Research and Scholarship

Artificial intelligence (AI) presents an opportunity in anatomic pathology to provide quantitative objective support to a traditionally subjective discipline, thereby enhancing clinical workflows and enriching diagnostic capabilities. AI requires access to digitized pathology materials, which, at present, are most commonly generated from the glass slide using whole-slide imaging. Models are developed collaboratively or sourced externally, and best practices suggest validation with internal datasets most closely resembling the data expected in practice. Although an array of AI models that provide operational support for pathology practices or improve diagnostic quality and capabilities has been described, most of them can be categorized into …

Antibiotic-Induced Gut Dysbiosis And Cognitive, Emotional, And Behavioral Changes In Rodents: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Shivdeep S. Hayer, Soonjo Hwang, Jonathan B. Clayton

Food for Health: Publications

There are previous epidemiological studies reporting associations between antibiotic use and psychiatric symptoms. Antibiotic-induced gut dysbiosis and alteration of microbiota-gut-brain axis communication has been proposed to play a role in this association. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we reviewed published articles that have presented results on changes in cognition, emotion, and behavior in rodents (rats and mice) after antibiotic-induced gut dysbiosis. We searched three databases—PubMed, Web of Science, and SCOPUS to identify such articles using dedicated search strings and extracted data from 48 articles. Increase in anxiety and depression-like behavior was reported in 32.7 and 40.7 percent of the …
