Optimal Control Analysis Of The Dynamics Of Covid-19 With Application To Ethiopian Data, Temesgen Duresa Keno, Fekadu Mosisa Legesse, Ebisa Olana Bajira

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In this paper, we proposed an optimal control of the COVID-19 transmission dynamics. First, we investigated system features such as solution boundedness, positivity, disease-free and endemic equilibrium, and the local and global stability of equilibrium points. Besides, a disease-free equilibrium point is globally asymptotically stable if the basic reproduction number is less than one, and an endemic equilibrium point exists otherwise. Secondly, we have shown the sensitivity analysis of the basic reproduction number. Also the model is then fitted using COVID-19 infected reported in Ethiopia from February 1,2023 to March 2,2023. The values of model parameters are then estimated from …

Applications Of The Ara-Residual Power Series Technique To Physical Phenomena, Aliaa Burqan

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In this paper, a new analytical method called the ARA-Residual power series method (ARA- RPSM) is implemented to solve some fractional physical equations. The methodology of the proposed method based on applying the ARA-transform to the given fractional differential equations, followed by the creation of approximate series solutions using Taylor’s expansion. Then the series solution is transformed using the inverse of the ARA-transform to get the solution in the original space. Accuracy, effectiveness, and validity of the suggested method are demonstrated through the discussion of three attractive applications. The solution obtained using ARA-RPSM demonstrates good agreement when compared to the …

Assessing Critical Population Thresholds Under Periodic Disturbances, Azmy S. Ackleh, Amy Veprauskas, John Banks, John Stark

UROC Staff Publications and Presentations

Population responses to repeated environmental or anthropogenic disturbances depend on complicated interactions between the disturbance regime, population structure, and differential stage susceptibility. Using a matrix modeling approach, we develop a methodological framework to explore how the interplay of these factors impacts critical population thresholds. To illustrate the wide applicability of this approach, we present two case studies pertaining to agroecosystems and conservation science. We apply sensitivity analysis to the two case studies to examine how population and disturbance properties affect these thresholds. Contrasting outcomes between these two applications, including differences in how factors such as disturbance intensity and pre-disturbance population …

Efficient Circular Repeated Measurements Designs Nearly Strongly Balanced For Carryover Effects, Muhammad Shahbaz, Muhammad Ejaz Malik, Muhammad Daniyal, H. M. Kashif Rasheed, Zahid Bashir, Rashid Ahmed

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

Repeated measurements designs (RMDs) are always economical but with the use of these designs, there may arise carryover effects. Minimal strongly balanced RMDs are well known to estimate the treatment effects and carryover effects independently. Where these minimal designs cannot be constructed, minimal nearly strongly balanced RMDs are used to balance the carryover effects. In this article, efficient circular nearly strongly balanced RMDs are constructed in periods of two and three different sizes with the smallest of size four.

Establishing A Monitoring Framework To Evaluate Impacts Of Grazing Exclusion And Inform Restoration At Santa Rita Ranch, Annie Booth, Annie Booth

Master of Science in Environmental Sciences and Management Projects

Santa Rita Ranch is a 1,750-acre cattle ranch in Templeton, California, that was privately owned and continuously grazed for the past 70 years. In 2021, The Land Conservancy of San Luis Obispo (LCSLO) acquired the property, and in the winter of 2022, they built a fence that bisects the ranch, excluding the cattle from 800 acres to preserve the riparian habitat. The LCSLO is currently defining the ecological baseline for the ranch to inform future management decisions. Given that cattle grazing has many environmental tradeoffs, they wanted to establish a long-term monitoring study to understand how relieving the pressures of …

Environmental Controls On Soil Organic Matter Fractions In Post-Fire Landscapes, Alexis Heuer Sep 2023

Environmental Controls On Soil Organic Matter Fractions In Post-Fire Landscapes, Alexis Heuer

Master of Science in Environmental Sciences and Management Projects

In the past few decades, the world’s climate is being altered by anthropogenic forces such as the increase in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions due to fossil fuel combustion (Paraschiv and Paraschiv, 2020). In California, the impacts of increased CO2 concentrations have created longer fire seasons, warmer temperatures, and increased lightning strikes which allow for wildfires to become more frequent, severe, and larger in scale (Westerling et al., 2006). Wildfires of this magnitude result in acceleration of landscape scale processes such as erosion and aggregation which in turn affects soil organic matter (SOM), the basis of soil health (Gonz´alez-P´erez et al., …

Fire Effects On Soil Organic Matter In The Creek Fire, Gracie E. Doolin Sep 2023

Fire Effects On Soil Organic Matter In The Creek Fire, Gracie E. Doolin

Master of Science in Environmental Sciences and Management Projects

Wildfires have increased in frequency and severity over the past few decades due to the increased concertation of CO2 emissions from anthropogenic influence. Soil carbon (C) sequestration has been identified as a climate change mitigation strategy; however, the influx of large-scale wildfires has accelerated landscape processes such as erosion, reducing soil aggradation, and soil C and nitrogen (N) protection. This trend is highlighted by the Creek Fire that occurred in September 2020 and burned 379,895 acres in the Sierra National Forest. This research is designed to close the knowledge gap regarding the impact of burn severity on soil organic matter …

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Kuttanad is a region that lies in the southwest part of Kerala, India, and possesses soft soil, which imposes constraints on many civil engineering applications owing to low shear strength and high compressibility. Chemical stabilizers such as cement and lime have been extensively utilized in the past to address compressibility issues. However, future civilizations will be extremely dependent on the development of sustainable materials and practices such as the use of bio-enzymes, calcite precipitation methods, and biological materials as a result of escalating environmental concerns due to carbon emissions of conventional stabilizers. One such alternative is the utilization of biopolymers. …

Faculty Research 2023

Existing phenotype ontologies were originally developed to represent phenotypes that manifest as a character state in relation to a wild-type or other reference. However, these do not include the phenotypic trait or attribute categories required for the annotation of genome-wide association studies (GWAS), Quantitative Trait Loci (QTL) mappings or any population-focussed measurable trait data. The integration of trait and biological attribute information with an ever increasing body of chemical, environmental and biological data greatly facilitates computational analyses and it is also highly relevant to biomedical and clinical applications. The Ontology of Biological Attributes (OBA) is a formalised, species-independent collection of …
