With medical software platforms moving to cloud environments with scalable storage and computing, the translation of predictive artificial intelligence (AI) models to aid in clinical decision-making and facilitate personalized medicine for cancer patients is becoming a reality. Medical imaging, namely radiologic and histologic images, has immense analytical potential in neuro-oncology, and models utilizing integrated radiomic and pathomic data may yield a synergistic effect and provide a new modality for precision medicine. At the same time, the ability to harness multi-modal data is met with challenges in aggregating data across medical departments and institutions, as well as significant complexity in modeling …

P-cadherin is associated with a wide range of tumor types, making it an attractive therapeutic target. FF-21101 is a human-mouse chimeric monoclonal antibody (mAb) directed against human P-cadherin, which has been radioconjugated with indium-111 (111In) utilizing a DOTA chelator. We investigated the biodistribution of FF-21101(111In) in cynomolgus macaques and extrapolated the results to estimate internal radiation doses of 111In- and yttrium-90 (90Y)-FF-21101 for targeted radioimmunotherapy in humans. Whole-body planar and SPECT imaging were performed at 0, 2, 24, 48, 72, 96, and 120 h post-injection, using a dual-head gamma camera. Volumes of interest of identifiable source organs of radioactivity were …

Mining process models of medical behavior from electronic medical records is an effective way to optimize clinical pathways. However, clinical medical behavior is an extremely complex field with high nonlinearity and variability, and thus we need to adopt a more effective method. In this study, we developed a fuzzy process mining method for complex clinical pathways. Firstly, we designed a multi-level expert classification system with fuzzy values to preserve finer details. Secondly, we categorized medical events into long-term and temporary events for more specific data processing. Subsequently, we utilized electronic medical record (EMR) data of acute pancreatitis spanning 9 years, …

Sarcoidosis is an interstitial lung disease (ILD) characterized by IFNγ and TBET dysregulation. Although one-third of patients progress from granulomatous inflammation to severe lung damage, the molecular mechanisms underlying this process remain unclear. Here, we report that pharmacological inhibition of phosphorylated SH2 containing protein tyrosine phosphatase-2 (pSHP2), a facilitator of aberrant IFNγ levels, decreases large granuloma formation and macrophage infiltration in the lungs of mice with sarcoidosis-like disease. Positive treatment outcomes were dependent on the effective enhancement of TBET ubiquitination within CD8+ T cells. Mechanistically, our findings identified a previously unknown post-translational modification (PTM) pathway in which the E3 F-box …

The Lived Experience Of Older Nepalese Women With Urinary Incontinence, Somi Panday
Dissertations
Urinary incontinence (UI) poses a significant challenge for women across different cultures, as their diverse perceptions of UI impact their decision-making and choices, which are influenced by personal beliefs and preferences. Although research on women's experiences with urinary incontinence has shown substantial progress, encompassing various cultural contexts, more studies are still needed to examine cultural factors and employ the framework of transcultural nursing theory. Additionally, limited research has explored the experiences of older women with urinary incontinence in Nepal. This descriptive phenomenological study aims to explore the lived experience of older Nepalese women dealing with urinary incontinence. By applying the …

PURPOSE: Variability in contouring structures of interest for radiotherapy continues to be challenging. Although training can reduce such variability, having radiation oncologists provide feedback can be impractical. We developed a contour training tool to provide real-time feedback to trainees, thereby reducing variability in contouring.
METHODS: We developed a novel metric termed localized signed square distance (LSSD) to provide feedback to the trainee on how their contour compares with a reference contour, which is generated real-time by combining trainee contour and multiple expert radiation oncologist contours. Nine trainees performed contour training by using six randomly assigned training cases that included one …

Boron–nitrogen-containing heterocycles with extended conjugated π-systems such as polycyclic aromatic 1,2-azaborines, hold the fascination of organic chemists due to their unique optoelectronic properties. However, the majority of polycyclic aromatic 1,2-azaborines aggregate at high concentrations or in the solid-state, resulting in aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) of emission. This practical limitation poses significant challenges for polycyclic aromatic 1,2-azaborines’ use in many applications. Additionally, only a few solvatochromic polycyclic aromatic 1,2-azaborines have been reported and they all display minimal solvatochromism. Therefore, the scope of available polycyclic 1,2-azaborines needs to be expanded to include those displaying fluorescence at high concentration and in the solid-state as …

Redox flow batteries (RFBs) are of recent interest to store harvested renewable energy for improving grid reliability and utilization. in this study, we synthesized and characterized a series of phenyl acrylate-Based UV-cross-linked anion exchange membranes (AEMs) and explored the performance of these AEMs in a model non-aqueous RFB under model conditions. Infrared spectroscopy was utilized to confirm the incorporation of ion carriers in the phenyl acrylate backbone. the electrochemical performance was compared with the commercial Fumasep membrane Fuma-375 based on high stability in non-aqueous solvents, high permeability to the charge-carrying ion, low resistance, low crossover of the redox-active molecules, and …

Both proteome and transcriptome data can help assess the relevance of non-coding somatic mutations in cancer. Here, we combine mass spectrometry-based proteomics data with whole genome sequencing data across 1307 human tumors spanning various tissues to determine the extent somatic structural variant (SV) breakpoint patterns impact protein expression of nearby genes. We find that about 25% of the hundreds of genes with SV-associated cis-regulatory alterations at the mRNA level are similarly associated at the protein level. SVs associated with enhancer hijacking, retrotransposon translocation, altered DNA methylation, or fusion transcripts are implicated in protein over-expression. SVs combined with altered protein levels …

Intestinal barrier dysfunction leads to inflammation and associated metabolic changes. However, the relative impact of gut bacteria versus non-bacterial insults on animal health in the context of barrier dysfunction is not well understood. Here, we establish that loss of Drosophila N-glycanase 1 (Pngl) in a specific intestinal cell type leads to gut barrier defects, causing starvation and JNK overactivation. These abnormalities, along with loss of Pngl in enterocytes and fat body, result in Foxo overactivation, leading to hyperactive innate immune response and lipid catabolism and thereby contributing to lethality. Germ-free rearing of Pngl mutants rescued their developmental delay but not …

The Impact Of Online Education On Families During Covid-19, Meghal Shah, Duaa Zahid, Heather Butts
Discovery Day
In the year 2020, the whole world was hit by a pandemic name COVID-19. It resulted in school closures across the world, which has impacted millions of children’s education. As a result, education has transitioned online via digital platforms. For many families, these transformations to online education have been difficult. For low-income families, people couldn’t afford or may not have had access to supplies needed for online education like high-speed internet and a computer. National Education Association (NEA) reports that 13.5 million children aged 5-7 years have no access to these technologies. It can be difficult for parents to understand …

Intranasal Sufentail Vs. Intravenous Morphine For Acute Pain In The Emergency Department, Billy Sin, Lilia Davenport, Gabriella Sikorska, Joi Yam Yau Lin
Discovery Day
Introduction: Acute pain management in the emergency department (ED) requires prompt administration of safe and effective analgesia. ¬Traditional routes of administration for analgesia includes the oral (PO), intravenous (IV), or intramuscular routes (IM). When these routes of administration are not feasible, the intranasal (IN) route may be considered. Furthermore, a rapid onset of therapeutic effects may be observed due to the rich capillary network of the respiratory mucosa that is able to promptly transport the drug into systemic circulation. There is emerging literature that supports the use of analgesia via the IN route in the Emergency Department (ED). However, its …

A Role Of Glutathione-Encoding Gene (Gsha) In Oxidative Stress And Antibiotic Susceptibility In Multidrug Resistant Pseudomonas Aeruginosa: A Possible Drug Target, Mital Vasoya, Sarah Alsaleh, Dong H. Kwon
Discovery Day
Background: Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a major causative agent of hospital- and community-acquired infections. Antibacterial treatment of the infections is often difficult due to presence of antibiotic resistant P. aeruginosa. A number of intrinsic and acquired antibiotic resistance mechanisms reported in P. aeruginosa. Recently, scavenging intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) has suggested as an intrinsic antibiotic resistance mechanism to all bacterial species since antibiotics induce oxidative stress in the bacterial species. However, this intrinsic resistance mechanism is currently controversial and further clarification requires. Glutathione is a sulfuhydryl (-SH)-containing tri-peptide intracellular antioxidant and serves as a scavenger of the intracellular ROS. Aim: …

The Phylogeny Predicts Potential New Sources Of Antibiotics From Plants, Malini Anna Prasad, Jeanmaire Molina
Discovery Day
The evolution and spread of antibiotic resistance has been the greatest threat to successful antibiotic treatment, and hence the driving force behind the search for new therapies. None of our modern pharmaceutical antibiotics have been developed from plants, albeit plants have been used since antiquity in traditional medicine to fight bacterial infections. We phylogenetically analyzed 138 plant species with antibacterial activity and found 5 plant families that are disproportionately important, with confamilials exerting similar antibacterial mechanisms, as expected due to common ancestry. Myrtaceae (guava family) was shown to inhibit quorum sensing, disrupting bacterial communication implicated in pathogenicity, due to its …

Imagine walking into a store, picking something up, and just walking out. No longer is this shoplifting, it is legal. In 2016, Amazon introduced their “Just Walk Out” technology in Seattle. “Just Walk Out” uses cameras located throughout the store to monitor shoppers, document what they pick up, and automatically charge that shoppers’ Amazon account when they leave the store. Recently, Amazon started selling “Just Walk Out” technology to other retailers. Since then, retailers have become increasingly interested in collecting and using customers’ “biometric identifiers and information.” Generally, “biometrics” is used to refer to “measurable human biological and behavioral …

St. John's Law Review
(Excerpt)
When JayCee Cooper walked out onto the platform at a women’s powerlifting competition for the first time, “everything else fell away: her years-long internal struggle over her gender identity, her decision to leave men’s sports when she began transitioning, her doubts that she would ever feel safe if she returned to competitions.” Powerlifting was JayCee’s way of feeling empowered in her own life, but after signing up for more competitions, she was told she could no longer compete because of a discriminatory policy that barred transgender women. Transgender athletes play sports for the same reasons as anyone else, including …

Unaccompanied Children And The Need For Legal Representation In Immigration Proceedings, Sejal Singh
St. John's Law Review
(Excerpt)
An unaccompanied child is defined as someone who enters the United States under the age of eighteen, without lawful status, and without an accompanying parent or legal guardian. Despite the term’s implication, many children do not enter the country alone but are either separated from their family members at the border or left by smugglers or other migrants near the border. The number of unaccompanied minors plunged in early 2020 due to border closures and restrictions amid the COVID-19 pandemic; however, a recent surge has led to a strain on government resources and a backlog of cases in immigration …

The Library Wants To Kill You: Places Of Information As Battleground And Sanctum In Halo, Mackenzie Streissguth
Proceedings from the Document Academy
Video games are often a widespread access point for studying information-seeking behaviors, as a large portion of the population (and its youth) play them. Understanding how real-world analogues, like libraries, are portrayed in games can give us insights into how they mirror conflicts of reality. By examining the depictions of information systems and accompanying curators in Halo: Combat Evolved (2001), we can begin to investigate the perceptions of libraries and their antagonism in ludonarratives. Resulting analysis reveals multiple layers of archival hostility that are ultimately upended in later iterations in the game series, changing the nature of the library itself. …
