The Neo-Couture project investigates the intersection of haute couture principles and emerging digital technologies. In this paper, we introduce a developing Neo-Couture framework, grounded in five key areas: Humanness, Interactions, Hierarchy, Material Agency, and Bespokeness/Rarity. Drawing upon the concept of ‘intra-action’ (Barad, 2007:33) from agential realism, the study explores how humans and computational tools mutually influence each other, offering fresh insights into creative processes in fashion and textiles. Where previous research has aimed to categorise AI tools; here, tools are considered 'material agents,' emphasising the emotional and agential aspects of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). The concept of 'intra-action' is important in …
From Boxfish To Twistbox: Developing A Woven Textile Hinge Through Bio-Inspired Design, Kathryn Walters, Veronika Kapsali
From Boxfish To Twistbox: Developing A Woven Textile Hinge Through Bio-Inspired Design, Kathryn Walters, Veronika Kapsali
Textile Intersections Conference Series
In woven textile-form design, layers may be stacked in a pleat structure, in order to provide greater area from a limited weaving width, or to create shaping in a rectangular cloth. The layers are typically joined by weaving them together where their edges meet. However, this method of joining creates a thickened seam, and may prevent the layers from opening flat. This paper presents a woven textile hinge structure, which enables joined layers to be opened flat, without adding extra thickness, or requiring further finishing. Its utility is demonstrated through the Twistbox, an eight-layer textile-form, woven flat, which unfolds into …

Growing Patterns: Textile Design With Living Pigments, Julia Moser, Karin Fleck, Irene Posch
Textile Intersections Conference Series
A turn towards the development of sustainable textile dyes moved new pigments into the centre of attention – the pigments metabolised by pigment-producing bacteria. In this paper, we present practice-based research that aims at expanding the field of textile dyeing with living bacteria through exploring possibilities for intentional pattern design. Experiments were guided by two research questions: RQ1: How can the use and combination of different textile fibres influence and enable textile pattern development with bacteria? RQ2: How can textile surface manipulation techniques be used for pattern design with living pigments? We show a series of 40 different samples that …

Sensory Textile-Bacterial Hybrids: Textile-Bacteria Fusion To Impart Forest-Associated Scents, Paula Nerlich, Angela Sherry, Michael Deary, Ruth Morrow, Jane Scott
Textile Intersections Conference Series
This research paper presents a study on the development of living textile-bacterial hybrids, focusing on the scent produced by Streptomyces violaceruber, a bacterial species, throughout its growth phase. The objective of this study was to observe scent profiles of S. violaceruber on two different fibres, cotton, and linen, and analyse the potential impact of fibre properties on scent profile, intensity, and duration. In doing so the research suggests potential opportunities to curate living scent through textiles and the generation of sensory textile-bacterial hybrids. Interdisciplinary methods were applied to compare changes in the volatile compounds present and identify fibres and fabrication …

Woven Variables – Investigating The Influence Of Conductive Float Arrangements On The Performance Of Woven Piezoresistive Pressure Sensors, Jingting Ma, Emmi Pouta, Ramyah Gowrishankar, Yu Xiao
Textile Intersections Conference Series
This paper investigates how conductive float arrangements, specifically the float length and float side, affect the performance of double-weave piezoresistive pressure sensors. While previous research has explored float variations in simple weaves, there is a lack of knowledge on the role of these variables in multi-layer yarn arrangements commonly used in pressure-sensitive functional weaves. We conducted a control-variants experiment by constructing two sets of double-weave piezoresistive pressure sensor samples with variations in float arrangements and evaluated their range, sensitivity, and reproducibility. We demonstrate how adjusting the float length and float side can allow the same three-layer piezoresistive sensor to perform …

Mapping The Benefits Of Collaborative Textile Research In Aotearoa New Zealand, Angela Kilford, Sonya Withers, Tanya Ruka, Faith Kane
Textile Intersections Conference Series
The idea of value chains within textile production, informs and directs much textile design research. This discourse has developed to respond to a growing desire to modify the textile value chain towards a more circular model (Alves, 2022). Although necessary to advance circularity, focusing entirely on value chains, precludes any vision of developing what we term a benefit chain. Focusing on a benefit chain, rather than a value chain could lead to new research frameworks in textiles research that move us towards addressing systemic injustices caused by capitalism, imperialism, and colonization, to which dominant modes of design continue to contribute …

Unpacking Strategies For E-Textile Design For Disassembly, Daria Casciani, Wei Wang
Textile Intersections Conference Series
The demand for E-textiles is anticipated to experience substantial growth in the future, particularly in the realm of sports and fitness applications. However, the increased usage and rapid obsolescence of E-textiles could result in a substantial accumulation of electronic textile waste, leading to environmental and health risks if not properly managed. The recycling and disposal of E-textile waste currently face significant obstacles as existing normative, classifications and technologies have not adapted to this new waste stream. To address these challenges, researchers have proposed the implementation of eco-design principles from the early stages of product design, emphasizing waste prevention through design …

Single activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) in a homogeneous system is sometimes insufficient for producing reactive oxygen species (ROS) for water treatment applications. In this work, manganese spinel ferrite and graphitic carbon nitride (MnFe2O4/g-C3N4; MnF) were successfully used as an activator for PMS under visible light irradiation to remove the four-mostdetected- hormone-contaminated water under different environmental conditions. The incorporation of g-C3N4 in the nanocomposites led to material enhancements, including increased crystallinity, reduced particle agglomeration, amplified magnetism, improved recyclability, and increased active surface area, thereby facilitating the PMS activation and electron …

Toward A Brighter Future For Entomological Collections, Susan Weller
Toward A Brighter Future For Entomological Collections, Susan Weller
University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers
Entomology collections, and natural history collections more generally, are critical research infrastructure. Specimens and metadata such as specimen labels, field notebooks, images, dissections, genetic sequences, and host plant data (to name a few) enable team science to examine biological diversity through time and study the impacts of humans on landscapes and climate (Johnson et al. 2023). However, some do not grasp the connection between drawers of insect specimens and modern science driven by advances in computational methods, molecular biology, and big data. Scientific specimens are key to connecting large-scale research questions within and among entomology and other disciplines.

Understanding of the vulnerability of populations exposed to wildfires is limited. We used an index from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to assess the social vulnerability of populations exposed to wildfire from 2000–2021 in California, Oregon, and Washington, which accounted for 90% of exposures in the western United States. The number of people exposed to fire from 2000–2010 to 2011–2021 increased substantially, with the largest increase, nearly 250%, for people with high social vulnerability. In Oregon and Washington, a higher percentage of exposed people were highly vulnerable (>40%) than in California (~8%). Increased social vulnerability of …

For many community members, emergency planning occurs in the background. Community members are not usually engaged in the planning activities. But people see the effects of planning when an emergency strikes. And when responses don’t appear to be happening or appear slow, empowered communities take charge. That’s what happened in Cobourg, Ontario between 2021 and 2022 when the community drove the implementation of the Covid-19 mass vaccination clinic at the Cobourg Community Centre, known as the CCC initiative. In this report, we synthesize the results of a qualitative assessment of the CCC clinic, including lessons and recommendations that other communities …

There is considerably greater variation in metabolic rates between men than between women, in terms of basal, activity and total (daily) energy expenditure (EE). One possible explanation is that EE is associated with male sexual characteristics (which are known to vary more than other traits) such as musculature and athletic capacity. Such traits might be predicted to be most prominent during periods of adolescence and young adulthood, when sexual behaviour develops and peaks. We tested this hypothesis on a large dataset by comparing the amount of male variation and female variation in total EE, activity EE and basal EE, at …

Design, Molecular Modelling And Synthesis Of Novel Benzothiazole Derivatives As Bcl-2 Inhibitors, Amira Khalil, Hoda S. Ismail, Dalal A. Abou El Ella, Deena S. Lasheen, Rabah A. Taha
Pharmacy
Apoptosis plays a crucial role in cancer pathogenesis and drug resistance. BCL-2 family of enzymes is considered as one of the key enzymes which is involved in apoptosis. When there is disruption in the balance between anti-apoptotic and pro-apoptotic members of the BCL-2 family apoptosis is dysregulated in the affected cells. Herein, 33 novel benzothiazole-based molecules 7a-i, 8a-f, 9a-b, 12a-e, 13a-d, 14a,b, and 17a-j were designed, synthesized and tested for their BCL-2 inhibitory activity. Scaffold hopping strategy was applied in designing of the target compounds. Compounds 13c and 13d showed the highest activity with IC50 values equal to 0.471 and …

The abundance of manganese in nature and versatility to access different oxidation states have made manganese complexes attractive as catalysts for oxidation reactions in both biology and industry. Macrocyclic ligands offer the advantage of substantially controlling the reactivity of the manganese center through electronic tuning and steric constraint. Inspired by the manganese catalase enzyme, a biological catalyst for the disproportionation of H2O2 into water and O2, the work herein employs 12-membered tetra-aza macrocyclic ligands to study how the inclusion of and substitution to the pyridine ring on the macrocyclic ligand scaffold impacts the reactivity of …

Microhomology-mediated end joining (MMEJ), an error-prone DNA damage repair mechanism, frequently leads to chromosomal rearrangements due to its ability to engage in promiscuous end joining of genomic instability and also leads to increasing mutational load at the sequences flanking the breakpoints (BPs). In this study, we systematically investigated the homology sequences around the genomic breakpoint area of human fusion genes, which were formed by the chromosomal rearrangements initiated by DNA double-strand breakage. Since the RNA-seq data is the typical data set to check the fusion genes, for the known exon junction fusion breakpoints identified from RNA-seq data, we have to …

The Discovery, Characterization, And Engineering Of Autolytic Enzymes As Antimicrobials, Jacob M. Furlon
The Discovery, Characterization, And Engineering Of Autolytic Enzymes As Antimicrobials, Jacob M. Furlon
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
In an age of rising levels of antibiotic resistance, we are quickly running out of tools to address some of the most virulent and widespread infectious bacteria. One group of enzymes that show significant potential for use as next-generation antibiotics are antimicrobial peptidoglycan hydrolases, often referred to as lysins. These enzymes are responsible for the breakdown of peptidoglycan within the bacterial cell wall, and, when exogenously applied, can result in dramatic destabilization of the cell wall leading to rapid lysis of the bacteria. While phage endolysins have been widely investigated as potential antimicrobials, the therapeutic potential of endogenous autolysins from …

Effective interventions are needed to help alternative high school teachers manage challenging student behaviors. One such intervention, class-wide function-related intervention teams (CWFIT), is a classroom management program based on positive behavior interventions and supports principles. CW-FIT involves teaching appropriate classroom behavioral expectations (social skills), using high behavior-specific praise-to-reprimand ratios, and an interdependent group contingency to provide differential reinforcement of appropriate classroom behavior and eliminate potential reinforcement of problem behavior. In this pilot study, four alternative high school teachers implemented CW-FIT during a summer school program. A series of single subject A-B designs were used over a 3-week period. Results supported …

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has been associated with a complex interplay between genetic and environmental factors. Prenatal stress exposure has been identified as a possible risk factor, although most stress-exposed pregnancies do not result in ASD. The serotonin transporter (SERT) gene has been linked to stress reactivity, and the presence of the SERT short (S)-allele has been shown to mediate the association between maternal stress exposure and ASD. In a mouse model, we investigated the effects of prenatal stress exposure and maternal SERT genotype on offspring behavior and explored its association with maternal microRNA (miRNA) expression during pregnancy. Pregnant female …
