BACKGROUND: Adjunctive diagnostic studies (aDS) are recommended to identify occult dissemination in patients with candidemia. Patterns of evaluation with aDS across pediatric settings are unknown.
METHODS: Candidemia episodes were included in a secondary analysis of a multicenter comparative effectiveness study that prospectively enrolled participants age 120 days to 17 years with invasive candidiasis (predominantly candidemia) from 2014 to 2017. Ophthalmologic examination (OE), abdominal imaging (AbdImg), echocardiogram, neuroimaging, and lumbar puncture (LP) were performed per clinician discretion. Adjunctive diagnostic studies performance and positive results were determined per episode, within 30 days from candidemia onset. Associations of aDS performance with episode characteristics …

Purpose
To examine cancer patients' perspectives on the impact of COVID-19 on teleoncology in Nigeria.
Methods
Data from a multicenter survey conducted at 15 outpatient clinics to 1,097 patients with cancer from April and July 2020 were analyzed. The study outcome was telemedicine, defined as patients who reported their routine follow-up visits were converted to virtual visits because of COVID-19 (coded yes/no). Covariates included patient age, ethnicity, marital status, income, cancer treatment, service disruption, and cancer diagnosis/type. Stata/SE.v.17 (StataCorp, College Station, TX) was used to perform chi-square and logistic regression analyses. P values ≤ .05 were considered statistically significant.

Bacterial infection is the most common complication following staged post-mastectomy breast reconstruction initiated with a tissue expander (TE). to limit bacterial infection, antibiotic irrigation of the surgical site is commonly performed despite little high-quality data to support this practice. We performed a prospective randomized control trial to compare the impact of saline irrigation alone to a triple antibiotic irrigation regimen (1 g cefazolin, 80 mg gentamicin, and 50,000 units of bacitracin in 500 mL of saline) for breast implant surgery. The microbiome in breasts with cancer (

Design And Synthesis Of Chiral, Conformationally Constrained Fatty Acid Mimetics, Lauren Elizabeth Markham Ph.D.
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Fatty acids interact with a wide variety of proteins, as they are either directly or indirectly involved in essentially every physiological process. Mimetics of these fatty acids have the potential to address unique issues associated with these proteins, in ways that the native ligands cannot. The pharmacological panel of targets for fatty acid mimetics is very large and comprises nuclear hormone receptors, cell surface receptors, and enzymes. This thesis describes approaches to the design and synthesis of novel fatty acid mimetics. Specifically, techniques introducing chirality and conformational constraints are employed to produce potent and selective modulators of various receptors. Synthetically, …

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) cells display extensive crosstalk with their surrounding environment to regulate tumor growth, immune evasion, and metastasis. Recent advances have attributed many of these interactions to intercellular communication mediated by small extracellular vesicles (sEVs), involving cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAF). To explore the impact of sEVs on monocyte lineage transition as well as the expression of checkpoint receptors and activation markers, peripheral blood monocytes from healthy subjects were exposed to PDAC-derived sEVs. Additionally, to analyze the role of sEV-associated HA in immune regulation and tissue-resident fibroblasts, monocytes and pancreatic stellate cells were cultured in the presence of PDAC sEVs …

Thyroid receptor signaling controls major physiological processes and disrupted signaling can cause severe disorders that negatively impact human life. Consequently, methods to detect thyroid receptor ligands are of great toxicologic and pharmacologic importance. Previously, we reported thyroid receptor ligand detection with cell-free protein synthesis of a chimeric fusion protein composed of the human thyroid receptor beta (hTRβ) receptor activator and a β-lactamase reporter. Here, we report a 60% reduction in sensing cost by reengineering the chimeric fusion protein biosensor to include a reporter system composed of either the full-length beta galactosidase (β-gal), the alpha fragment of β-gal (β-gal-α), or a …

Background As levels of anthropogenic noise in the marine environment rise, it is crucial to quantify potential associated effects on marine mammals. Yet measuring responses is challenging because most species spend the majority of their time submerged. Consequently, much of their sub-surface behavior is difficult or impossible to observe and it can be difficult to determine if—during or following an exposure to sound—an observed dive differs from previously recorded dives. We propose a method for initial assessment of potential behavioral responses observed during controlled exposure experiments (CEEs), in which animals are intentionally exposed to anthropogenic sound sources. To identify possible …

Delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI) is an important contributor to poor outcomes in aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) patients. We previously showed that volatile anesthetics such as isoflurane, sevoflurane and desflurane provided robust protection against SAH-induced DCI, but the impact of a more commonly used intravenous anesthetic agent, propofol, is not known. The goal of our current study is to examine the neurovascular protective effects of propofol on SAH-induced DCI. Twelve-week-old male wild-type mice were utilized for the study. Mice underwent endovascular perforation SAH or sham surgery followed one hour later by propofol infusion through the internal jugular vein (2 mg/kg/min continuous …

Psychostimulant methamphetamine (METH) is neurotoxic to the brain and, therefore, its misuse leads to neurological and psychiatric disorders. The gene regulatory network (GRN) response to neurotoxic METH binge remains unclear in most brain regions. Here we examined the effects of binge METH on the GRN in the nucleus accumbens, dentate gyrus, Ammon's horn, and subventricular zone in male rats. At 24 h after METH, ~16% of genes displayed altered expression and over a quarter of previously open chromatin regions - parts of the genome where genes are typically active - showed shifts in their accessibility. Intriguingly, most changes were unique …

The Image Of Women As Victims In F. Scott Fitzgerald’S The Great Gatsby, Nouh Al-Guzo
The Image Of Women As Victims In F. Scott Fitzgerald’S The Great Gatsby, Nouh Al-Guzo
Jordan Journal of Applied Science-Humanities Series
This paper sheds light on the image of women as victims in the male-dominant society of America in the 1920s through a critical analysis of Francis Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby. The three main female characters in the narrative—Daisy Buchanan, Myrtle Wilson, and Jordan Baker—are products of oppressive forces and are treated by powerful men as objects rather than as thoughtful beings. The belief held by these characters that marriage to wealthy men is one of the few options available for women to achieve success and happiness makes them victims of the advances of morally corrupt men who …

Multi-Criteria Analysis Of The Possibility Of Retrofitting The System Of Rainwater Drainage From Subsidence Basins In A Liquidated Mine, Andrzej Chmiela, Małgorzata Wysocka, Adam Smoliński
Journal of Sustainable Mining
Mine closure is the natural final stage of mining activity. The process of financing mine liquidation is complex and expensive. The many years of conducted hard coal extraction affect the surface height differences. Analyses of the shifts in hydrogeological conditions and water hazard states in mining plants led to legal regulation adaptations, primarily in terms of hydrogeological documentation preparation, and made it necessary to conduct work concerning new options for water hazard assessment and prevention. Current subjects of particular interest include shifts in terrain morphology and the water regime, resulting in periodic flooding and permanent flooding of the most depressed …

In lakes, the rates of gross primary production (GPP), ecosystem respiration (R), and net ecosystem production (NEP) are often controlled by resource availability. Herein, we explore how catchment vs. within lake predictors of metabolism compare using data from 16 lakes spanning 39oN to 64oN, a range of inflowing streams, and trophic status. For each lake, we combined stream loads of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP) with lake DOC, TN, and TP concentrations and high frequency in situ monitoring of dissolved oxygen. We found that stream load stoichiometry indicated lake stoichiometry …

Fundamental Study Of Ionic Liquid Physicochemical Effects On Thermal Stability Of Model Biological Macromolecules, Austin Keith Clark
Theses and Dissertations
Ionic Liquids (ILs) are substances with a unique physical attribute compared to that of solid ionic salts. At room temperature, ILs are molten salts that have a variety of physical effects that can play a role in their impact on other molecules, as solvents or solutes. They can play the role of the solvent in a variety of applications, from biofuels to organic catalysis or as excipients in pharmaceutical formulations. These ILs have a desirable use as solvents due to their ability to be tunable substances. Changing the cation or anion of the IL causes a change in its physical …

BACKGROUND: With the COVID-19 pandemic came rapid uptake in virtual oncology care. During this, sociodemographic inequities in access to virtual visits (VVs) have become apparent. To better understand these issues, we conducted a qualitative study to describe the perceived usability and acceptability of VVs among Black adults diagnosed with cancer.
METHODS: Adults who self-identified as Black and had a diagnosis of prostate, multiple myeloma, or head and neck cancer were recruited from 2 academic medical centers, and their community affiliates to participate in a semi-structured interview, regardless of prior VV experience. A patient and family advisory board was formed to …

Many marine species can regulate the intensity of bioluminescence from their ventral photophores in order to counterilluminate, a camoufage technique whereby animals closely match the intensity of the downwelling illumination blocked by their bodies, thereby hiding their silhouettes. Recent studies on autogenic cuticular photophores in deep-sea shrimps indicate that the photophores themselves are light sensitive. Here, our results suggest photosensitivity in a second type of autogenic photophore, the internal organs of Pesta, found in deep-sea sergestid shrimps. Experiments were conducted onboard ship on live specimens, exposing the animals to bright light, which resulted in ultrastructural changes that matched those seen …

Turkish Journal of Botany
Pollen grains of 24 Tanacetum taxa from Türkiye were examined by light (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Detailed pollen morphological characteristics are provided for these taxa. According to the 24 analyzed taxa, T. parthenifolium has the smallest pollen grains, and T. aurem var. aurem possesses the largest ones. The basic shape of the pollen grains in most taxa is oblatespheroidal. However, suboblate pollen grains are recorded for T. balsamitoides, T. aurem var. aurem, and T. tomentellum. The polar axis ranges from 16.56 to 26.14 µm, and the equatorial diameter ranges from 17.64 to 30.12 µm in this study. …

The new species of Scrophularia was discovered among the screes and stony slopes of the Alakır Valley (Antalya) located in the Western Taurus. The most remarkable morphological feature of the species is its flowers without staminodes. With this feature, the species is unique among the representatives of the ?Canina? clade in Türkiye. The new species is closely related to S. floribunda endemic to Türkiye and East Aegean Islands (Greece) according to our phylogenetic analyses based on the nuclear ITS and chloroplast trnL-F regions. Apart from its corollas without staminodes, the new species differs from its morphologically similar …

Eumetopias jubatus (Steller sea lions) that breed on the Oregon coast are smaller than those found both in Alaska and California. During the breeding season, male Zalophus californianus (California sea lions) move past E. jubatus rookeries in Oregon on their way to their breeding rookeries in Southern California. Introgression potentially could explain the difference in size of Oregon E. jubatus relative to remaining populations. At Portland State University (PSU), the marine mammal collection of the Museum of Vertebrate Biology has over 200 skulls of Z. californianus and E. jubatus from throughout northern Oregon and southern Washington. To assess whether morphologically …
