Moderate Heat Stress-Induced Sterility Is Due To Motility Defects And Reduced Mating Drive In Caenorhabditis Elegans Males, Nicholas B. Sepulveda, Donald Chen, Lisa N. Petrella
Moderate Heat Stress-Induced Sterility Is Due To Motility Defects And Reduced Mating Drive In Caenorhabditis Elegans Males, Nicholas B. Sepulveda, Donald Chen, Lisa N. Petrella
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Moderate heat stress negatively impacts fertility in sexually reproducing organisms at sublethal temperatures. These moderate heat stress effects are typically more pronounced in males. In some species, sperm production, quality and motility are the primary cause of male infertility during moderate heat stress. However, this is not the case in the model nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, where changes in mating behavior are the primary cause of fertility loss. We report that heat-stressed C. elegans males are more motivated to locate and remain on food and less motivated to leave food to find and mate with hermaphrodites than their unstressed counterparts. …

The rapid growth of sequencing technology and its increasing popularity in biology-related research over the years has made whole genome re-sequencing (WGRS) data become widely available. A large amount of WGRS data can unlock the knowledge gap between genomics and phenomics through gaining an understanding of the genomic variations that can lead to phenotype changes. These genomic variations are usually comprised of allele and structural changes in DNA, and these changes can affect the regulatory mechanisms causing changes in gene expression and altering the phenotypes of organisms.Inthisresearchwork, wecreatedtheGenVarXtoolset, thatisbacked by transcription factor binding sequence data in promoter regions, the copy number variations …

Rooted In Grant County, Jenna Gerig
Public Relations Student Projects
Because the goal of this campaign is to promote Grant County assets, initial research sought to assess communication throughout the county, gather insight on the impact of churches, and accumulate information on how to best retain its college students. Research also sought to identify the personas of Grant County residents to discover their values and beliefs. Additional research helped determine the most appealing assets, including churches and nonprofits, universities, parks and venues, events, and affordable living. Additionally, a survey was conducted to understand why students who attend colleges in Grant County choose to leave the county upon graduation.

Inequality Of Air Quality?: A Study Of Air Quality Within Housing Price Brackets In Gettysburg, Pa, Jess G. Schaefer, Alexis J. Jones, Arden H. Dowd
Student Publications
With the rise of cars and other motorized vehicles has come the rise of air pollution, which tends to have disproportionate environmental and health impacts on low-income and communities of color. This study analyzes car presence and air quality on a transect within Gettysburg, PA to determine if there is a relationship between air pollution and vehicle presence, and if there is a difference in air quality between higher price bracket housing compared to campus, commercial, and lower price bracket housing. To test our research questions, we identified nine sampling locations along a transect where we measured air pollutants, including …

Philosophy Of Science: An Exploration Through Geological Case Studies, Jamie W. Dinella
Student Publications
Science, especially the field of geology, cannot be separated from culture. Through an examination of six different philosophies of science and relevant case studies, this work will highlight how foundational geologists created and developed their theories in order to align with cultural constructs, specifically religion. As technology progressed and competing viewpoints arose, the field of geology has become more and more complex since the 17th century. Therefore, this piece will conclude with an explanation of my own philosophy of science. This methodology aims to reconstruct our cultural cognitions regarding science, creating a method which acknowledges biases in the science based …
Hacking The Library Exhibition Designs, Karen Diaz
Hacking The Library Exhibition Designs, Karen Diaz
Hacking the Library
The hacker ethos in the positive sense is about the ability to deconstruct and reconstruct information systems. Hacking starts with reconceptualizing libraries. Libraries are now beyond the book. As libraries evolve into a new sort of space --still a space for research, learning and study-- but also for community engagement and collaboration, library exhibits present a unique opportunity for both collaborating exhibitors and library users. Artists engage with libraries creatively through artist residencies, installations, using discarded library materials in their work, collaborative workshops, digital collections remixing, performances and more. Hacking the Library will present artwork that highlights the intersecting values …
Probiotic Compounds Inhibit Staphylococcus Aureus Biofilm Formation, Reduce Virulence, & Improve Antibiotic Sensitivity, Kyle R. Leistikow
Probiotic Compounds Inhibit Staphylococcus Aureus Biofilm Formation, Reduce Virulence, & Improve Antibiotic Sensitivity, Kyle R. Leistikow
Dissertations (1934 -)
Multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial infections are a top five global public health threat, causing 2.8 million infections and 35,000 deaths annually in the US alone. Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most clinically important MDR pathogens in the world with infections leading to high rates of morbidity and mortality in both humans and animals. This bacterium's ability to form protective biofilms further complicates classical antibiotic interventions, highlighting the need for new therapeutics with novel mechanisms of action. The goal of this dissertation was to investigate antibiofilm mechanisms employed by probiotic bacteria to reduce S. aureus virulence and mitigate antimicrobial resistance evolution …
Influence Of Maximal Strength On Joint-Specific Function And Coordination Across Stretch-Shortening Cycle Task Demands, Michael H. Haischer
Influence Of Maximal Strength On Joint-Specific Function And Coordination Across Stretch-Shortening Cycle Task Demands, Michael H. Haischer
Dissertations (1934 -)
Jumping involves the stretch-shortening cycle (SSC) and is a familiar movement in many sports. More explosive jumping may provide a competitive advantage, but the biomechanics that relate to optimal SSC utilization for performance are not well understood. Furthermore, while strength relates to better jump performance and may facilitate mechanisms like joint stiffness that benefit SSC utilization, how strength impacts adjustments to biomechanics and locomotor functional roles of the lower extremity joints under different SSC demands has not been established. Therefore, the purpose of this dissertation was to investigate how strength influences biomechanics and functional roles of the ankle, knee, and …

Exemplar Trans-Affirmative Therapists: A Consensual Qualitative Research Study, Shannon Skaistis
Dissertations (1934 -)
The consensus approach for psychotherapy with transgender and nonbinary clients (TNB) has come to be known as trans-affirmative psychotherapy (TAP). TAP is influenced by a collection of guidelines and models (American Counseling Association [ACA], 2010; APA, 2015; Chang et al., 2017; Singh & dickey, 2017) and a small number of empirical studies related to psychotherapy with transgender clients (e.g., Elder, 2016; McCullough et al., 2017, Mizock & Lundquist, 2016, Morris et al., 2020). However, the limited empirical research and guidelines provide minimal direction to clinicians working in-session with TNB clients. This study sought to investigate the perceptions of exemplar clinicians’ …
The Role Of Membrane Porosity In Ion Removal By Ro/Nf Membranes And Development Of A Regenerable Pac-Loaded Membrane, Yizhi Hou
Dissertations (1934 -)
Reverse osmosis (RO) and nanofiltration (NF) membranes are widely used for water treatment applications. They are charged porous materials, in which size exclusion and charge exclusion work together to dictate solute transport. In this study, membrane porosity was primarily determined by pore size. Thicker, more porous membranes with smaller pores had higher NaCl removal and less permeate water flux. Higher porosity membranes have greater inner pore surface area available to support a greater number of functional groups, thereby rejecting ion flux and increasing ion removal. The Donnan steric pore model (DSPM) was used to determine that the contribution of diffusion …
Miracles And Laws Of Science: Insights For Contemporary Dialogue On Divine Action From Said Nursi And Thomas Aquinas, Edmund Michael Lazzari
Miracles And Laws Of Science: Insights For Contemporary Dialogue On Divine Action From Said Nursi And Thomas Aquinas, Edmund Michael Lazzari
Dissertations (1934 -)
This dissertation is a work of theology-science dialogue and Christian-Muslim dialogue, putting Bediuzzaman Said Nursi (1877-1960) and St. Thomas Aquinas (1226-1274) in conversation with contemporary debates in the wake of the Vatican Observatory-CTNS Berkeley conferences, or the Divine Action Project (DAP). This dissertation explores the question of how classical monotheists can hold coherently the coexistence of both miracles (defined as the operations of creatures in ways not anticipated by the regularities of the cosmos) and the laws of science (defined as the statistical generalizations of the regularities of the cosmos). Generating metaphysical and epistemological questions from DAP figures, such as …

Constitutional Confidentiality, Natalie Ram, Jorge L. Contreras, Laura M. Beskow, Leslie E. Wolf
Washington and Lee Law Review
Federal Certificates of Confidentiality (“Certificates”) protect sensitive information about human research subjects from disclosure and use in judicial, administrative, and legislative proceedings at both the state and federal levels. When they were first authorized by Congress in the 1970s, Certificates covered sensitive information collected in research about drug addiction use. Today, however, they extend to virtually all personal information gathered by biomedical research studies. The broad reach of Certificates, coupled with their power to override state subpoenas and warrants issued in the context of law enforcement, abortion regulation, and other police powers typically under state control, beg the question whether …

The Ethical Risk Of Experience, Barbara Glesner Fines
Faculty Works
Practice may make perfect, but in law practice, experience and specialization can actually increase some types of errors - leading to an increased risk of malpractice claims, disciplinary complaints, or client dissatisfaction. This article explores the question of why this may be so. The article first examines the phenomenon of increased malpractice and disciplinary risks for family law attorneys in general and experienced attorneys in particular. The central question this article examines is this, "Why might highly experienced and specialized family law attorneys find themselves facing the most severe of disciplinary sanctions or malpractice judgments?" The answers point to some …
How Music And Our Faculty For Music Are Made For Each Other, James Parakilas
How Music And Our Faculty For Music Are Made For Each Other, James Parakilas
All Faculty Scholarship
This study relies on the prevalence of certain structures that largely distinguish the creation and reception of music from that of language - namely, temporal grids, scalar grids, and segments with their repetitions - to construct a model of the human cognitive faculty for music that allows humans to make music the way they do. The study draws on research and thought in philosophy (including phenomenology), linguistics, psychology, and neurology, coupled with musicology, to produce a model of a human capacity to make complex comparisons between ongoing sound sequences and those simultaneously reconstructed from memory by registering the relativities within …

Transcriptomics Of Temporal- Versus Substrate-Specific Wood Decay In The Brown-Rot Fungus Fibroporia Radiculosa, Byoungnam Min, Steven Ahrendt, Anna Lipzen, Cristina E. Toapanta, Robert A. Blanchette, Dan Cullen, David Hibbett
Biology
Brown-rot fungi lack many enzymes associated with complete wood degradation, such as lignin-attacking peroxidases, and have developed alternative mechanisms for rapid wood breakdown. To identify the effects of culture conditions and wood substrates on gene expression, we grew Fibroporia radiculosa in submerged cultures containing Wiley milled wood (5 days) and solid wood wafers (30 days), using aspen, pine, and spruce as a substrate.

Genome Assembly Of The Foot-Flagging Frog, Staurois Parvus: A Resource For Understanding Mechanisms Of Behavior, Mika A. Holtz, Riccardo Racicot, Doris Preininger, Adam M.M. Stuckert, Lisa A. Mangiamele
Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Elaborate and skilled movements of the body have been selected in a variety of species as courtship and rivalry signals. One roadblock in studying these behaviors has been a lack of resources for understanding how they evolved at the genetic level. The Bornean rock frog (Staurois parvus) is an ideal species in which to address this issue. Males wave their hindlimbs in a "foot-flagging"display when competing for mates. The evolution of foot flagging in S. parvus and other species is accompanied by increases in the expression of the androgen receptor gene within its neuromuscular system, but it remains unclear what …
Christ As Dialogue With Culture: Reimaging The Church For Incarnational Discipleship And Ministry, Sean Sloan
Christ As Dialogue With Culture: Reimaging The Church For Incarnational Discipleship And Ministry, Sean Sloan
Doctor of Ministry (DMin)
God spoke, and Logos created. Increased polarization and divisiveness in USAmerican society and the resulting social pain and even violence inspired this project to pursue a healthier and restorative dialogue. If God’s spoken and incarnate Word originated human life and was and is the means of redeeming humans to life with God and one another, how might such a dialogical Christology impact a theology of dialogue capable of addressing brokenness in a culture? As action research, this project tested the potential for a theology of dialogue to impact perceptions as a precursor to altering behaviors through a presentation at Calvary …

Toward A Eucharistic Gathering: The Efficacy And Implications Of The Recovery Of The Great Tradition At Faith, Hope, And Charity Worship Center, Ernest J. Crocker
Doctor of Ministry (DMin)
While humankind not only has to eat to survive but also enjoys eating, the church, which shares this same need to survive, has, in some cases, found itself in a forced fast. This forced fasting, often justified by 'biblical' reasons, can significantly hinder the church's spiritual formation, leaving worshippers deficient in their spiritual journey. Promoting a more balanced approach to spiritual discipline is crucial, as using Scripture to justify this fast is counter to the words of Christ, the teachings of the apostles, and the church's mind for over two millennia. It's important to note that from Pentecost to the …

Menstruation And Adolescent Girls' Daily Lives In Rural Upper Egypt, Salma Abou Hussein, Nahla G. Abdel-Tawab
Adolescents and Young People
The Population Council conducted a qualitative study to understand the menstruation-related attitudes, practices, and perceptions that shape adolescent girls’ daily routines in rural upper Egypt communities, specifically Assiut and Sohag. The study relied on in-depth interviews with unmarried adolescent girls aged 13–16; focus group discussions with girls aged 13–16, mothers, fathers, and male siblings of adolescent girls; and key informant interviews with schoolteachers, doctors/nurses, pharmacists, and community leaders. “Period poverty” (lack of access to, or inability to afford period supplies) can be detected among adolescent girls in rural Assiut and Sohag. Lack of information and emotional and practical support before …

Invasive clonal species may exhibit different growth strategies than their native clonal competitors. In this study, we examined the spatial distribution of tiller outgrowth and the bud bank by comparing the investment in phalanx versus guerilla growth of a native and invasive perennial grass in North America. We also examined the efect of altered precipitation frequency, clipping, and competition on their clonal growth strategies. Investment in phalanx and guerilla growth was assessed by examining live propagule and tiller production from the plant crown versus its rhizomes. Although invasive Bromus inermis and native Pascopyrum smithii exhibited similar clonal growth strategies as …
