Gooseberry Anthocyanins Alleviate Insulin Resistance By Regulating Ceramide Metabolism In High Fat Diet Mice, Xian Tang, Jun Gao, Jinpeng Huang, Chenjuan Zhang, Hongwei Liu, Jie Wei

Turkish Journal of Biology

Background/aim: Obesity is the fifth largest risk factor of death in the world. The ceramide produced by obesity is closely related to insulin resistance (IR) caused by obesity. At present, the commercially available weight loss products have large side effects and limited therapeutic effects. Therefore, it is particularly important to find effective natural nontoxic products to treat obesity and explore its possible pathways and mechanisms. Materials and methods: In this paper, a high-fat diet (HFD) mice model was established by intragastric administration of high-fat emulsion to investigate the intervention effect of Gooseberry anthocyanins (GA) on IR in HFD mice. We …

Turkish Journal of Biology

Background/aim: Ribosomal proteins have been shown to perform unique extraribosomal functions in cell apoptosis and other biological processes. Ribosomal protein L8 (RPL8) not only has important nonribosomal regulatory functions but also participates in the oncogenesis and development of tumors. However, the specific biological functions and pathways involved in this process are still unknown. Materials and methods: RPL8 was overexpressed (RPL8-OE) in HeLa cells. MTT assay and flow cytometry were used to detect cell proliferation and apoptosis, respectively. Transcriptome sequencing was performed to analyze the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and regulated alternative splicing events (RASEs) by RPL8-OE, both of which were …

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Introduction: Sclerotinia sclerotiorum is a serious pathogen causing severe basal stalk rot (BSR) disease on cultivated sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) that leads to significant yield losses due to insufficient resistance. The wild annual sunflower species H. petiolaris, commonly known as prairie sunflower is known for its resistance against this pathogen. Sunflower resistance to BSR is quantitative and determined by many genes with small effects on the resistance phenotype. The objective of this study was to identify loci governing BSR resistance derived from H. petiolaris using a quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping approach.

Methods: BSR …

Depth And Frequency Dependence Of Geoacoustic Properties On The New England Mud Patch From Reflection Coefficient Inversion, Jiang Yong-Min, Charles W. Holland, Stan E. Dosso, Jan Dettmer

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Muddy sediments cover significant portions of continental shelves, but their physical properties remain poorly understood compared to sandy sediments. This paper presents a generally applicable model for sediment-column structure and variability on the New England Mud Patch (NEMP), based on trans-dimensional Bayesian inversion of wide-angle, broadband reflection-coefficient data in this work and in two previously published reflection-coefficient inversions at different sites on the NEMP. The data considered here include higher frequencies and larger bandwidth and cover lower reflection grazing angles than the previous studies, hence, resulting in geoacoustic profiles with significantly better structural resolution and smaller uncertainties. The general sediment-column …

Microbial Community Function And Bacterial Pathogen Composition In Pit Latrines In Peri-Urban Malawi., Savanna K. Smith, Benjamin B. Risk, Rochelle H. Holm, Elizabeth Tilley, Petros Chigwechokha, Drew Capone, Joe Brown, Francis L. De Los Reyes Iii

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Despite the widespread global reliance on pit latrines as improved sanitation systems, the decomposition of waste within pit latrines is poorly understood. One area needing elucidation is the characterization and function of microbial communities within pit latrines. To address this gap, we characterized the microbial communities of 55 lined pit latrines at three sampling layers from two communities in peri-urban Malawi. The microbial communities of the fecal sludge samples were analyzed for beta diversity, pathogen presence, and functional profiling. Household surveys were conducted and used to compare microbial community patterns to household characteristics and pit latrine use patterns. Compared to …

Law And Its Limits: Ethical Issues In Mary Shelley’S Frankenstein Or, The Modern Prometheus, David S. Caudill Oct 2023

Law And Its Limits: Ethical Issues In Mary Shelley’S Frankenstein Or, The Modern Prometheus, David S. Caudill

St. Mary's Journal on Legal Malpractice & Ethics

The law and literature movement is frequently associated with the use of literary images of law as a point of reflection upon the ethical obligations of lawyers. Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (1818)—the story of a young scientist whose unorthodox experiments end up creating the famed “monster”—is not, at first glance, a likely candidate for that enterprise. However, Dr. Frankenstein’s ambition and ruthless pursuit of knowledge has become a contemporary image of science out of control and the need for ethical limitations on scientific progress. Consequently, the novel raises currently important issues of regulating science and technology. Given the lawyer’s ethical obligation …

Our ability to sense and move our bodies relies on proprioceptors, sensory neurons that detect mechanical forces within the body. Different subtypes of proprioceptors detect different kinematic features, such as joint position, movement, and vibration, but the mechanisms that underlie proprioceptor feature selectivity remain poorly understood. Using single-nucleus RNA sequencing (RNA-seq), we found that proprioceptor subtypes in the Drosophila leg lack differential expression of mechanosensitive ion channels. However, anatomical reconstruction of the proprioceptors and connected tendons revealed major biomechanical differences between subtypes. We built a model of the proprioceptors and tendons that identified a biomechanical mechanism for joint angle selectivity …

Human noroviruses (HuNoVs) are the leading cause of acute gastroenteritis. In immunocompetent hosts, symptoms usually resolve within 3 days; however, in immunocompromised persons, HuNoV infection can become persistent, debilitating, and sometimes life-threatening. There are no licensed therapeutics for HuNoV due to a near half-century delay in its cultivation. Treatment for chronic HuNoV infection in immunosuppressed patients anecdotally includes nitazoxanide, a broad-spectrum antimicrobial licensed for treatment of parasite-induced gastroenteritis. Despite its off-label use for chronic HuNoV infection, nitazoxanide has not been clearly demonstrated to be an effective treatment. In this study, we standardized a pipeline for antiviral testing using multiple human …

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

A comprehensive atlas of cis-regulatory elements and their dynamic activity is necessary to understand the transcriptional basis of cellular structure maintenance, metabolism, and responses to the environment. Here we show, using matched single-nucleus chromatin accessibility and RNA-sequencing from juvenile male C57BL6 mice, an atlas of accessible chromatin regions in both normal and denervated skeletal muscles. We identified cell-type-specific cis-regulatory networks, highlighting the dynamic regulatory circuits mediating transitions between myonuclear types. Through comparison of normal and perturbed muscle, we delineated the reprogramming of cis-regulatory networks in response to denervation, described the interplay of promoters/enhancers and target genes. We further unveil a …

Queering Ecology: Three Investigations From Indigenous Women In Post-Conflict North Sumatra, Perdana Roswaldy Oct 2023

Queering Ecology: Three Investigations From Indigenous Women In Post-Conflict North Sumatra, Perdana Roswaldy

Antropologi Indonesia

Feminists and environmental scholars draw connections between gender inequality, heterosexism, and the devastating impact of environmental catastrophes on the livelihoods of women and gender minorities, exacerbating their precarity. This body of scholarship has begun to imagine alternatives to patriarchal gender and heterosexual norms for reconciling the relationship between humans and nature by calling for "queer(ing) ecology." I investigate the possibility of queering ecology by posing three theoretical concerns in opposition to anthropocentric and gendered preconceptions about nature: its idleness, naturality, and rightfulness. Respectively, I will dissect such presumptions by questioning nature as metaphors, investigating "the natural" attribute in nature, and …

The Green Encounters: “Common Good” Narrative And Community Struggle In Halimun Salak Coridor, West Java, Sulastri Sardjo

Antropologi Indonesia

Since the colonial era of the East Indies, multiple ruling regimes have promoted a certain narrative to utilize the forests on Mount Halimun Salak for nature preservation and profit accumulation. Existing studies of the designation of Halimun Salak as a conservation area have shown that such an establishment led to conflicts over land and livelihoods with the surrounding communities and local farmers. Complementing these studies, my qualitative research in the Halimun Salak Corridor (HSC) highlights that the “common good” narrative promoted by conservation programs has not benefited people’s livelihoods. Conversely, the expansion of conservation area through HSC has further restricted …

Pfas Screening And Protein Absolute Quantitation By Mass Spectrometry, Hao Chen

Sustainability Seminar Series

In collaboration with Prof. Mengyan Li at NJIT, we recently developed a rapid analytical method for per and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) using nano-electrospray high-resolution mass spectrometry (Nano-ESI-HRMS), which was recently published in Water Research, 2022, 219, 118542. This method was applied to aqueous film-forming foams (AFFFs) and wastewater samples collected from three local wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). The method exhibited high sensitivity with lower limits of detection (LODs) of 3.2~36.2 ng/L for 22 target PFAS analytes. In AFFF formulations, Nano-ESI-HRMS enabled the first-time detection of trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (TFMS), perfluoroethyl cyclohexanesulfonate (PFECHS), 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonyl amido sulfonic acid (6:2 FTSAS-SO2), N …

Surface Water Quality: Contaminants And Treatment, Juliana Grigg, Kathryn Jordan, Diana Montoya-Herrera, Frank Jacobitz

Creative Collaborations: Annual Showcase of Undergraduate Research

Extensive population growth and urbanization is affecting surface water quality and infrastructure across the globe. Urbanization was boosted by the advancements of infrastructure for water, which allows treatment and transport of water through large distances from their original surface water sources such as lakes, rivers, and streams. A major concern of the rapid changes experienced by urban areas is the ecological impacts on surface water due to associated anthropogenic processes. Activities such as the overconsumption and extraction of surface water have negatively affected the quality and quantity of those sources. In addition, discharge of treated wastewater may impact the quality …

Differential Dynamic Microscopy Enhanced With Convolutional Neural Networks, Steven Dang, Justin Siu, Ruilin You, Philip Neill, Ryan Mcgorty

Creative Collaborations: Annual Showcase of Undergraduate Research

Optical microscopy methods are commonly employed to measure rheological properties, like viscosity or viscoelasticity, of materials from biological tissues to colloidal suspensions. Such rheological properties are important for applications such as formulating pharmaceutical ointments to tailoring the mouthfeel of foods and for answering many fundamental questions such as how phase separation proceeds and how the material properties of the cytoplasm respond to stimuli. In recent years, an optical microscopy technique for performing rheological measurements known as differential dynamic microscopy (DDM) has grown in popularity. However, a drawback of DDM is that one typically needs to acquire movies of ~1000 frames …

Numeracy, Consistency, And The Allais Paradox, Sean J. Mcginity Oct 2023

Numeracy, Consistency, And The Allais Paradox, Sean J. Mcginity

Theses and Dissertations

This paper explores the relations between mathematical abilities and preferences, preferences for consistency, and the Allais paradox. To answer this question, 144 participants completed a survey which measured objective numeracy, subjective numeracy, preference for consistency, and consistency of probabilistic choices. The results did not show the predicted relations where consistency would moderate the relations where subjective numeracy mediates the relations between objective numeracy and the consistency of probabilistic choices. The previously indicated relations where subjective numeracy simply mediated the relations between objective numeracy and probabilistic reasoning were also not replicated. While the hypotheses were not supported overall one interesting finding was …
