Lead Acetate Deteriorates The Improvement Effect Of L-Arginine And Tetrahydrobiopterin On Endothelin-1 Receptors Activity In Rat Aorta, Zhikal Omar Khudhur, Ismail Mustafa Maulood
Baghdad Science Journal
Endothelin-1 (ET-1) is a potent vasoconstrictor hormone that has been identified as an important factor responsible for the development of cardiovascular dysfunctions. ET-1 exerts its vasoconstrictor activity through two pharmacologically distinct receptors, ETA and ETB that are found in vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) and the vasodilator activity through an ETB receptor located on endothelial cells. This study aimed to show the impact of 1µM L-arginine (LA), 100µM tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4), and their combined effect on ET-1 activity in both lead-treated and lead-untreated rat aortic rings. This means, investigating how endothelial dysfunction reverses the role of nitric oxide precursor and cofactor. …

Wastewater is a discarded human by-product, but its analysis may help us understand the health of populations. Epidemiologists first analyzed wastewater to track outbreaks of poliovirus decades ago, but so-called wastewater-based epidemiology was reinvigorated to monitor SARS-CoV-2 levels while bypassing the difficulties and pit falls of individual testing. Current approaches overlook the activity of most human viruses and preclude a deeper understanding of human virome community dynamics. Here, we conduct a comprehensive sequencing-based analysis of 363 longitudinal wastewater samples from ten distinct sites in two major cities. Critical to detection is the use of a viral probe capture set targeting …

Although women receive more doctorates across disciplines, they continue to be underrepresented in academia with representation of women faculty diminishing at higher ranks relative to their male counterparts. This phenomenon is known as the ‘leaky pipeline,’ and is frequently observed in STEM fields, though it exists across disciplines. Previous studies suggest the motherhood penalty heavily impacts women’s careers, especially in academia where biological and tenure clocks coincide. The overall aim of this study is to examine the gendered effects of caregiving policies for faculty in STEM fields at regional comprehensive universities through integrating the Work-Home Resources (W-HR) Model and feminist …

Due to the high similarity between camouflaged instances and the background, the recently proposed camouflaged instance segmentation (CIS) faces challenges in accurate localization and instance segmentation. To this end, inspired by query-based transformers, we propose a unified query-based multi-task learning framework for camouflaged instance segmentation, termed UQFormer, which builds a set of mask queries and a set of boundary queries to learn a shared composed query representation and efficiently integrates global camouflaged object region and boundary cues, for simultaneous instance segmentation and instance boundary detection in camouflaged scenarios. Specifically, we design a composed query learning paradigm that learns a shared …

We used high-throughput sequencing and multivariate analyses to describe soil microbial community composition in two four-year field plant–soil feedback (PSF) experiments in Minnesota, USA and Jena, Germany. In descending order of variation explained, microbial community composition differed between the two study sites, among years, between bulk and rhizosphere soils, and among rhizosphere soils cultivated by different plant species. To try to identify soil organisms or communities that may cause PSF, we correlated plant growth responses with the microbial community composition associated with different plants. We found that plant biomass was correlated with values on two multivariate axes. These multivariate axes …

New State Records For 33 Species Of Round Fungus Beetles, Small Carrion Beetles And Mammal Nest Beetles (Coleoptera: Leiodidae) In Ohio, Usa, Ken D. Karns
Insecta Mundi
New state records for 33 species of Leiodidae (Coleoptera) are reported from Ohio, with the majority of records from one locality in the southeastern portion of the state. This doubles the known members of the family in Ohio to 66 species in 20 genera.
As part of an ongoing project through the Ohio Coleopterists Society to obtain records for a future checklist of the beetles of Ohio, the Leiodidae (Coleoptera) present an exceptional case. The family Leiodidae is represented by 38 genera and 382 species in North America north of Mexico (Peck and Newton 2017). In their annotated catalog of …
Taxonomic Review Of The North American Dung Beetle Genus Melanocanthon Halffter, 1958 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae: Deltochilini), W. D. Edmonds
Insecta Mundi
This paper presents a taxonomic review of the genus Melanocanthon Halffter, a group of ball-rolling (telocoprid) dung beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae) endemic to eastern North America. The genus comprises five species, each keyed, diagnosed, illustrated and presented with information on distribution, relationships, and biology: Melanocanthon punctaticollis (Schaeffer), M. granulifer (Schmidt), M. nigricornis (Say), M. bispinatus (Robinson) and Melanocanthon vulturnus Edmonds, new species.
This paper is a sequel to the recent taxonomic study of Boreocanthon (Edmonds 2022). Melanocanthon and Boreocanthon are very closely related, distinct phylogenetic lineages with affinities to the pilularius species group of Canthon (Halffter 1961) and the …

Pepsis Elegans Lepeletier (Hymenoptera: Pompilidae: Pepsinae)—A Secretive Spider Wasp And Century-Long Conundrum, Frank E. Kurczewski
Insecta Mundi
After 105 years of study and 425 recent natural photographs, the host spider and nesting behavior of Pepsis elegans Lepeletier (Hymenoptera: Pompilidae: Pepsinae) remain a mystery. Pepsis elegans is the only species in the large and impressive genus Pepsis Fabricius that lives east of the Mississippi River, mainly in the southern U.S. The other 14 Nearctic Pepsis species inhabit the southern U.S. west of the Mississippi River and northern Mexico. They capture and provision their nests with large, hairy, heavy-bodied, stout-legged tarantulas of the genus Aphonopelma Pocock (Araneae: Mygalomorphae: Theraphosidae), the only native theraphosid genus in this region. There are …

Despite effective antiretroviral therapy, HIV co-morbidities remain where central nervous system (CNS) neurocognitive disorders and cardiovascular disease (CVD)-pathology that are linked with myeloid activation are most prevalent. Comorbidities such as neurocogntive dysfunction and cardiovascular disease (CVD) remain prevalent among people living with HIV. We sought to investigate if cardiac pathology (inflammation, fibrosis, cardiomyocyte damage) and CNS pathology (encephalitis) develop together during simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) infection and if their co-development is linked with monocyte/ macrophage activation. We used a cohort of SIV-infected rhesus macaques with rapid AIDS and demonstrated that SIV encephalitis (SIVE) and CVD pathology occur together more frequently …

Supply Chain Simulation Of Manufacturing Shirts Using System Dynamics For Sustainability, Gurinder Kaur, Ron Kander
Supply Chain Simulation Of Manufacturing Shirts Using System Dynamics For Sustainability, Gurinder Kaur, Ron Kander
School of Design and Engineering Papers
In supply chain management (SCM), goods and services flow from the raw materials stage to the end user with complexities and uncertainty at each stage. Computer modeling and simulation is a particularly useful method to examine supply chain operational issues because it can solve operational complexities that are challenging and time consuming to analyze. Manufacturing companies fear losing valuable time and assets during the manufacturing process; the inaccurate estimation of raw materials, human capital, or physical infrastructure not only leads to monetary loss for the manufacturing unit, but also has a detrimental effect on the environment. The purpose of this …

Critical Race Theory: An Exploration Of African American Medical Students’ Perception Of Their Racialized Experiences While Attending Medical School, Pamela Harlan-Mcswain
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Abstract Supported by Critical Race Theory, this study explores the perceptions of African-American medical students regarding their racialized experiences while attending medical school. The history of African Americans seeking medical education in the United States is entrenched in a legacy of racial segregation, social and cultural constructs, and legal doctrine perpetuated through society's sustained racial bias. Critical Race Theory has often examined the relationship between race and education systems. Critical Race Theory in medicine consistently acknowledges race as a social construct. Racism is not obsolete, and this is not a post-racial world. A critical race methodology research approach along with …
