Parathyroid Hormone Related Peptide Hypercalcemia As A Presentation Of Endometrial Clear Cell Carcinoma, Claudia Georges, Biplov Adhikari, Soumya Koundaveety, Robert Jones, Kalyan Paudel, Christopher Haas

Journal of Community Hospital Internal Medicine Perspectives

Hypercalcemia is a frequent complication of solid tumors and hematologic malignancies yet is only rarely associated with endometrial clear cell carcinoma. Here we report on a 70-year-old female who presented in the context of hip fracture and was incidentally found to have humoral hypercalcemia of malignancy secondary to endometrial clear cell carcinoma. This rare association makes endometrial cancer one of the differential diagnoses to be considered when assessing incidentally found symptomatic or asymptomatic hypercalcemia in the appropriate patient population.

The Unseen Danger Of Methotrexate Toxicity, Khalid Javed, Rashmi Wijeratne, Sumanth Kumar Bandaru Nov 2023

The Unseen Danger Of Methotrexate Toxicity, Khalid Javed, Rashmi Wijeratne, Sumanth Kumar Bandaru

Journal of Community Hospital Internal Medicine Perspectives

Methotrexate is a commonly prescribed immunosuppressant and chemotherapy agent, which is closely monitored by healthcare providers for its adverse effects. As a result, methotrexate toxicity occurs infrequently. We present a case of a 51-year-old woman with a past medical history of rheumatoid arthritis on methotrexate and prednisone. She presented to the emergency room with altered mental status, jaundice, and mucosal ulceration. She was subsequently admitted to the intensive care unit for septic shock in the setting of severe pancytopenia, acute renal failure and acute liver failure. This case demonstrates the importance of recognizing the signs and symptoms of methotrexate toxicity …

Cryoglobulinemia Leading To The Diagnosis Of Low Grade Serous Ovarian Carcinoma, Garo Hagopian, Christopher Grant, Jerry Lou, Cary Johnson, Zahra Pakbaz

Journal of Community Hospital Internal Medicine Perspectives

We present the case of a 64-year-old female who was referred by her oncologist to benign hematology clinic for persistent asymptomatic cryoglobulinemia. Workup led to diagnosis of a rare low grade ovarian serous carcinoma. We briefly review the pathophysiology and clinical significance of cryoglobulinemia and the diagnosis and management of low grade serous ovarian carcinoma.

Deep Neural Network Based Tissue Deconvolution Of Circulating Tumor Cell Rna, Fengyao Yan, Limin Jiang, Fei Ye, Jie Ping, Tetiana Y. Bowley, Scott A. Ness, Chung-I Li, Dario Marchetti, Jijun Tang, Yan Guo

Pathology Research and Scholarship

Prior research has shown that the deconvolution of cell-free RNA can uncover the tissue origin. The conventional deconvolution approaches rely on constructing a reference tissue-specific gene panel, which cannot capture the inherent variation present in actual data. To address this, we have developed a novel method that utilizes a neural network framework to leverage the entire training dataset. Our approach involved training a model that incorporated 15 distinct tissue types. Through one semi-independent and two complete independent validations, including deconvolution using a semi in silico dataset, deconvolution with a custom normal tissue mixture RNA-seq data, and deconvolution of longitudinal circulating …

The Basic Dualism In The World, Martin Zwick Nov 2023

The Basic Dualism In The World, Martin Zwick

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

Graham Harman writes that the “basic dualism in the world lies…between things in their intimate reality and things as confronted by other things.” This paper supports Harman’s assertion from a systems theoretic perspective and illustrates it with some examples, including conceptions about truth, ethics, value, and intelligence. But dualism implies irreconcilable difference; what Harman points to is better expressed as a dyad, where the two components not only imply one another but are related, and where this spatial dyad is usefully augmented with a temporal dimension, expressed in a third component or an additional orthogonal dyad.

Targeting Bet Proteins Downregulates Mir-33a To Promote Synergy With Pim Inhibitors In Cmml, Christopher T. Letson Nov 2023

Targeting Bet Proteins Downregulates Mir-33a To Promote Synergy With Pim Inhibitors In Cmml, Christopher T. Letson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Chronic Myelomonocytic Leukemia (CMML) is a rare myeloid malignancy with a dismal prognosis and no therapeutic options which are capable of altering the natural course of the disease. There remains a significant need for novel therapies that are able to meaningfully improve patient outcomes. In this study we explore the effectiveness of Bromodomain and Extra-Terminal domain protein inhibitor (BETi) combinations in CMML. Preclinical studies in myeloid neoplasms have demonstrated efficacy of BETi. However, BETi demonstrate poor single agent activity in clinical trials. Several studies suggest that combinations with other anti-cancer inhibitors may enhance the efficacy of BETi. To nominate BETi …

Coupling Chemical And Genomic Data Of Marine Sediment-Associated Bacteria For Metabolite Profiling, Stephanie P. Suarez Nov 2023

Coupling Chemical And Genomic Data Of Marine Sediment-Associated Bacteria For Metabolite Profiling, Stephanie P. Suarez

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Marine sediment-associated bacteria house many new and exciting novel secondary metabolites. These metabolites can be tested for bioactivity against various types of cancer and fungal, bacterial, and viral infections. In this thesis, we investigated the combination of biosynthetic gene cluster information with mass spectra to perform a chemical profiling of sediment- associated bacteria. Furthermore, we utilized a scoring technique to provide an identification and confidence score to each annotated compound. The sediment was collected from east Arthur Harbor, Palmer Station, Antarctica, at depths of 20 ft and 60 ft. After plating on agar, 52 unique bacterial strains were isolated, with …

Immune Responses Induced At One Hour Post Cataract Surgery Wounding Of The Chick Lens, Jodirae Dedreu, Morgan Basta, Janice Walker, Sue Menko Nov 2023

Immune Responses Induced At One Hour Post Cataract Surgery Wounding Of The Chick Lens, Jodirae Dedreu, Morgan Basta, Janice Walker, Sue Menko

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

While the lens is an avascular tissue with an immune-privileged status, studies have now revealed that there are immune responses specifically linked to the lens. The response to lens injury, such as following cataract surgery, has been shown to involve the activation of the resident immune cell population of the lens and the induction of immunomodulatory factors by the wounded epithelium. However, there has been limited investigation into the immediate response of the lens to wounding, particularly those induced factors that are intrinsic to the lens and its associated resident immune cells. Using an established chick embryo ex vivo cataract …

BACKGROUND: Quantitative interstitial abnormalities (QIA) are an automated computed tomography (CT) finding of early parenchymal lung disease, associated with worse lung function, reduced exercise capacity, increased respiratory symptoms, and death. The metabolomic perturbations associated with QIA are not well known. We sought to identify plasma metabolites associated with QIA in smokers. We also sought to identify shared and differentiating metabolomics features between QIA and emphysema, another smoking-related advanced radiographic abnormality.

METHODS: In 928 former and current smokers in the Genetic Epidemiology of COPD cohort, we measured QIA and emphysema using an automated local density histogram method and generated metabolite profiles …
