Attack On The Brain: Neurowars And Neurowarfare, Armin Krishnan Nov 2023

Attack On The Brain: Neurowars And Neurowarfare, Armin Krishnan

Space and Defense

Is neurotechnology leading nation-states toward a new domain of war? Neuroscience is on the verge of deciphering the human brain. As a result, brains will become a part of the battlefield against which attacks will be directed. As neuroscientist James Giordano argued: “the brain is the next battlespace.” It is foreseeable that this will have tremendous implications for warfare and could amount to a true military revolution in the sense of military historian Williamson Murray: it would completely change the characteristics of conflict, as well as transform state and society.

Articles

Traditionally, cellulose nanofiber (CNF) production has primarily relied on virgin cellulose sources. Yet, the shift to using paper mill sludge (PMS) as a source for CNF underscores the significance of reusing and recycling industrial byproducts. PMS contains significant amounts of cellulose that can be extracted as a raw material. The purpose of present study is to provide a sustainable approach to PMS utilization as a paper coating additive in the cellulose nanofibrils (CNFPMS) form via simply scalable wire-wound rod coating method. The effect of CNFPMS additive amounts at two coating layers on microstructure and surface properties of coatings such as …

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a neurovascular complication of diabetes. Recent investigations have suggested that early degeneration of the neuroretina may occur prior to the appearance of microvascular changes; however, the mechanisms underlying this neurodegeneration have been elusive. Microglia are the predominant resident immune cell in the retina and adopt dynamic roles in disease. Here, we show that ablation of retinal microglia ameliorates visual dysfunction and neurodegeneration in a type I diabetes mouse model. We also provide evidence of enhanced microglial contact and engulfment of amacrine cells, ultrastructural modifications, and transcriptome changes that drive inflammation and phagocytosis. We show that CD200-CD200R …

Cross-Sectional Data Accurately Model Longitudinal Growth In The Craniofacial Skeleton, Kevin M. Middleton, Dana L. Duren, Kieran P. Mcnulty, Heesoo Oh, Manish Valiathan, Richard J. Sherwood

Pacific Faculty Work

Dense, longitudinal sampling represents the ideal for studying biological growth. However, longitudinal samples are not typically possible, due to limits of time, prohibitive cost, or health concerns of repeat radiologic imaging. In contrast, cross-sectional samples have few such drawbacks, but it is not known how well estimates of growth milestones can be obtained from cross-sectional samples. The Craniofacial Growth Consortium Study (CGCS) contains longitudinal growth data for approximately 2000 individuals. Single samples from the CGCS for individuals representing cross-sectional data were used to test the ability to predict growth parameters in linear trait measurements separately by sex. Testing across a …

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

A bacteriochlorophyll a (Bchla) dimer is a basic functional unit in the LH1 and LH2 photosynthetic pigment–protein antenna complexes of purple bacteria, where an ordered, close arrangement of Bchla pigments—secured by noncovalent bonding to a protein template—enables exciton delocalization at room temperature. Stable and tunable synthetic analogs of this key photosynthetic subunit could lead to facile engineering of exciton-based systems such as in artificial photosynthesis, organic optoelectronics, and molecular quantum computing. Here, using a combination of synthesis and theory, we demonstrate that exciton delocalization can be achieved in a dimer of a synthetic bacteriochlorin (BC …

Department of Pharmacology, Physiology, and Cancer Biology Faculty Papers

Enteroendocrine cells (EECs) are an essential interface between the gut and brain that communicate signals about nutrients, pain, and even information from our microbiome. EECs are hormone-producing cells expressed throughout the gastrointestinal epithelium and have been leveraged by pharmaceuticals like semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy), terzepatide (Mounjaro), and retatrutide (Phase 2) for diabetes and weight control, and linaclotide (Linzess) to treat irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and visceral pain. This review focuses on role of intestinal EECs to communicate signals from the gut lumen to the brain. Canonically, EECs communicate information about the intestinal environment through a variety of hormones, dividing EECs into …

Pharmacotherapies Targeting Gaba-Glutamate Neurotransmission For Treatment-Resistant Depression, Courtney M Vecera, Alan C Courtes, Gregory Jones, Jair C Soares, Rodrigo Machado-Vieira

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) is a term used to describe a particular type of major depressive disorder (MDD). There is no consensus about what defines TRD, with various studies describing between 1 and 4 failures of antidepressant therapies, with or without electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). That is why TRD is such a growing concern among clinicians and researchers, and it explains the necessity for investigating novel therapeutic targets beyond conventional monoamine pathways. An imbalance between two primary central nervous system (CNS) neurotransmitters, L-glutamate and γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), has emerged as having a key role in the pathophysiology of TRD. In this …

Mussel shells have variable structures both within and between species. In this study, the structural and biological characteristics of the shells of Potomida semirugata and Leguminaia wheatleyi were investigated in order to use freshwater mussel shells as a biological material. Close observation of the microstructure of the shells of the two common freshwater bivalves revealed a variation in construction from the outer periostracum to the inner nacreous layer. In P. semirugata, a polygonal arrangement with columnar prisms …

The Functions Of Oligodendrocyte Lineage-Derived Laminins Under Homeostatic And Intracerebral Hemorrhagic Stroke Conditions, Minkyung Kang Nov 2023

The Functions Of Oligodendrocyte Lineage-Derived Laminins Under Homeostatic And Intracerebral Hemorrhagic Stroke Conditions, Minkyung Kang

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Oligodendrocyte lineage is a glial cell population in the central nervous system. The lineage starts with oligodendrocyte precursor cells, which differentiate and mature into mature oligodendrocytes. Myelination, the major function of mature oligodendrocytes, plays a significant role for normal function of the central nervous system, and its dysfunction leads to many demyelinating diseases, such as multiple sclerosis. During the lineage progression, an extracellular matrix protein, laminin, actively regulates the cells' biology, including cell proliferation, differentiation, and myelination. However, the cellular sources of the laminin that controls oligodendrocyte lineage cells remain largely unknown. Interestingly, previous studies have shown that oligodendrocyte lineage …

Evaluating The Relative Pollen Productivity Estimates Using The Reveals Model: A Case Study From The Cultural Landscape In Shandong, China, Furong Li, Marie José Gaillard, Siqi Xie, Qiaoyu Cui, Ralph Fyfe, Laurent Marquer, Shinya Sugita Nov 2023

Evaluating The Relative Pollen Productivity Estimates Using The Reveals Model: A Case Study From The Cultural Landscape In Shandong, China, Furong Li, Marie José Gaillard, Siqi Xie, Qiaoyu Cui, Ralph Fyfe, Laurent Marquer, Shinya Sugita

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The Landscape Reconstruction Algorithm (LRA) is regarded as the soundest approach for quantifying taxon-specific plant cover from pollen data. The reliability of relative pollen productivity (RPP) estimates is fundamental in the accuracy of quantitative vegetation reconstruction using the LRA approach. Inconsistent RPP estimates produced by different studies can cast doubt on the reliability and applicability of quantitative vegetation reconstruction. Therefore, it is crucial that the RPP estimates are evaluated before being applied for quantitative vegetation reconstruction. We have tested two alternative approaches, namely, a leave-one-out cross-validation (LOO) method and a splitting-by-subregion strategy, using surface pollen assemblages and the REVEALS model—the …

In Situ Tuning And Investigating The Growth Process Of Size Controllable Gold 2 Nanoparticles And Statistical Size Prediction Analysis, Vinayak Sharma

Articles

A critical understanding of the formation and growth process of gold nanoparticles (GNPs) is crucial, in order to synthesize monodisperse gold nanocrystals of controllable size and shape in a predictable way. GNPs of different shapes and sizes can be produced by altering different physicochemical reaction conditions, such as pH, temperature, and the ratio of reactants. The significant variations in the morphological features of GNPs can be monitored in situ in a time-dependent manner by using UV–visible spectroscopy. In this study, we have synthesized seedless GNPs by reduction of HAuCl4 by using various molar ratios of HEPES and Na2HPO4. The shape …
