The Lived Experience Of Second-Degree Nursing Students’ Anxiety Before And During Their Initial Clinical Rotation, Shelly Wheatley
The Lived Experience Of Second-Degree Nursing Students’ Anxiety Before And During Their Initial Clinical Rotation, Shelly Wheatley
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones
Anxiety in nursing students can impact learning. Literature has shown that nursing students, especially those in second-degree nursing programs, report higher stress levels compared to other undergraduate students (Penprase & Koczara, 2009). Nursing clinicals can be jarring for students and present many stressors that can impeded learning and cause poor clinical performance. Much research has been done about traditional undergraduate students’ feelings of anxiety. There is a noted gap in research of second-degree, accelerated nursing students and their feelings about their initial clinical placement. Comparisons have often been made between traditional and nontraditional students, but the lived experiences of second-degree …

Understanding how tropical systems have responded to large-scale climate change, such as glacial-interglacial oscillations, and how human impacts have altered those responses is key to current and future ecology. A sedimentary record recovered from Lake Junín, in the Peruvian Andes (4085 m elevation) spans the last 670,000 years and represents the longest continuous and empirically-dated record of tropical vegetation change to date. Spanning seven glacial-interglacial oscillations, fossil pollen and charcoal recovered from the core showed the general dominance of grasslands, although during the warmest times some Andean forest trees grew above their modern limits near the lake. Fire was very …

Enzyme Kinetics Of Deoxyuridine Triphosphatase From Western Corn Rootworm, Carlos Riera‑Ruiz, Hideaki Moriyama
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Objective The Western corn rootworm (WCR), Diabrotica virgifera virgifera, is a highly adaptable insect pest that has evolved resistance to a variety of control strategies, including insecticides. Therefore, it is interesting to examine how housekeeping proteins in WCR have been changed under WCR-controlling strategies. In this study, we focused on one of such proteins in WCR, a ubiquitous enzyme 5’-triphosphate nucleotidohydrolase (dUTPase). In the thymidine synthetic pathway, dUTPase hydrolyzes deoxyuridine triphosphate (dUTP) and supplies the substrate, deoxyuridine monophosphate, for the thymidylate synthase (TS). It decreases the cellular content of uracil, reducing uracil misincorporation into DNA. Suppressing the dUTPase activity, …

Candida Auris-Macrophage Cellular Interactions And Transcriptional Response, Pedro Miramón, Andrew W Pountain, Michael C Lorenz
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
The pathogenic yeast Candida auris represents a global threat of the utmost clinical relevance. This emerging fungal species is remarkable in its resistance to commonly used antifungal agents and its persistence in the nosocomial settings. The innate immune system is one the first lines of defense preventing the dissemination of pathogens in the host. C. auris is susceptible to circulating phagocytes, and understanding the molecular details of these interactions may suggest routes to improved therapies. In this work, we examined the interactions of this yeast with macrophages. We found that macrophages avidly phagocytose C. auris; however, intracellular replication is …

Multi-cancer early detection (MCED) tests are being developed, but little is known about patient receptivity to their use for cancer screening. The current study assessed patient interest in such testing. Our team conducted a prospective, observational study among primary care patients in a large, urban health system. They were asked to complete a telephone survey that briefly described a new blood test in development to identify multiple types of cancer, but was not currently recommended or covered by insurance. The survey included items to assess respondent background characteristics, perceptions about MCED testing, and interest in having such an MCED test. …

T cells are critical effectors of the immune response against pathogens and malignancies and, given the recent success of T-cell immunotherapies in cancer, there is now an urgent need to enhance the efficacy and durability of T-cell immune responses to improve anti-tumor immunity. Formation of memory T cells is a critical step of a successful immune response as it ensures maintenance of long-term immunity and protection from re-exposure to foreign antigens. Notably, metabolism regulates the fate and function of T cells and is a powerful tool to modulate T-cell activity and memory differentiation. Accordingly, metabolic interventions to augment T-cell memory …

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most aggressive and lethal primary brain tumor whose median survival is less than 15 months. The current treatment regimen comprising surgical resectioning, chemotherapy with Temozolomide (TMZ), and adjuvant radiotherapy does not achieve total patient cure. Stem cells' presence and GBM tumor heterogeneity increase their resistance to TMZ, hence the poor overall survival of patients. A dysregulated cell cycle in glioblastoma enhances the rapid progression of GBM by evading senescence or apoptosis through an over-expression of cyclin-dependent kinases and other protein kinases that are the cell cycle's main regulatory proteins. Herein, we identified and validated the …

Recently, many analysis tools have been devised to offer insights into data generated via cytometry by time-of-flight (CyTOF). However, objective evaluations of these methods remain absent as most evaluations are conducted against real data where the ground truth is generally unknown. In this paper, we develop Cytomulate, a reproducible and accurate simulation algorithm of CyTOF data, which could serve as a foundation for future method development and evaluation. We demonstrate that Cytomulate can capture various characteristics of CyTOF data and is superior in learning overall data distributions than single-cell RNA-seq-oriented methods such as scDesign2, Splatter, and generative models like LAMBDA.

Uncovering The Determinants Of Compositionally Distinct, Coexisting Biomolecular Condensates, Andrew Zijia Lin
Uncovering The Determinants Of Compositionally Distinct, Coexisting Biomolecular Condensates, Andrew Zijia Lin
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Biomolecular condensates form via the phase transitions of proteins and nucleic acids. What is unclear is how unique condensates achieve compositional specificity. Of particular interest is the ability of distinct condensates to have shared and distinct components. This is readily apparent in the multinucleate filamentous fungi Ashbya gossypii, where condensates share a common cytoplasm. In Ashbya, the RNA-binding protein Whi3 forms condensates with CLN3, BNI1, and SPA2. These RNAs are responsible for initiating the cell cycle, forming actin cables, and directing polarized cell growth respectively. However in vivo observations have shown that certain Whi3-RNA condensates are capable of mixing while …

Bureaucratic Politics Run Amok: The United States And Satellite Export Controls, Eligar Sadeh
Bureaucratic Politics Run Amok: The United States And Satellite Export Controls, Eligar Sadeh
Space and Defense
The case of export controls of United States (U.S.) commercial satellites is characterized by bureaucratic politics leading to policy outcomes that are not rational, i.e., the desired outcome of national security is not met and commerce in the satellite sector is harmed. The constraints to rational policy making are a result of competition, conflict, and protectionism, the “bureaucratic politics,” among the relevant actors including the U.S. President and Congress, Department of State (State), Department of Commerce (Commerce), and Department of Defense (DOD). It is bureaucratic politics that result in policies for licensing the export of commercial satellites that are far …

Kosovo Specialist Court: Sovereignty Infringement And The Risk Of A New Precedent, Valëza Kastrati
Ohio Northern University International Law Journal
The Kosovo Specialist Chambers and Specialist Prosecutor’s Office, otherwise known as the Kosovo Specialist Court (KSC), was established in 2015, thus presenting the most recent mechanism to adjudicate war crimes and crimes against humanity related to the Kosovo War of 1998-1999. Its formation has led to numerous unresolved questions, particularly in regard to the implications between international courts and national (domestic) courts. Holding the epithet of being a hybrid court in theory, while also showing elements of an international court in reality, has brought doubts that such courts can indeed be established by simply revealing another perception of it. The …

Regression-Based Models For Predicting Discharge Coefficient Of Triangular Side Orifice, Mohamed Elshaarawy, A. K. Hamed, Saad Hamed
Regression-Based Models For Predicting Discharge Coefficient Of Triangular Side Orifice, Mohamed Elshaarawy, A. K. Hamed, Saad Hamed
Journal of Engineering Research
- This study introduced another technique to predict the discharge coefficient (Cd) of the triangular side orifice (TSO). This technique is based on the SPSS software as multiple linear regression (MLR) and multiple nonlinear regression (MNLR) models. These models were established using 570 experimental datasets, 70 and 30% for calibration and testing stages, respectively. These sets considered five non-dimensional parameters, including (orifice crest height, orifice length, orifice height, upstream flow depth, and Froude number of the main channel). Results showed that the MLR and MNLR models in the calibrating stage had higher determination coefficients and lower errors. In addition, the …

Sustainable Waste Management Through The Lens Of Artificial Intelligence: An In-Depth Review, Noha Emad El-Sayad, Shereen Zakaria
Journal of Engineering Research
One of the major issues facing the world, particularly developing countries, is waste management. “Waste” is any material that is not needed or has no intended use. Neglecting this waste endangers the safety of the public and causes harm, as it emits dangerous gases that have negative effects on human health. Egypt has made distinguished efforts to achieve the goals of Egypt Vision 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals. These efforts, which have been implemented through massive government projects throughout the past few years and are set to be followed by more in the future, still require a lot of …

Path Planning For A 6 Dof Robotic Arm Based On Whale Optimization Algorithm And Genetic Algorithm, Mahmoud A. A. Mousa, Abdelrahman Tarek Elgohr, Hatem Khater
Journal of Engineering Research
The trajectory planning for robotic arms is a significant area of research, given its role in facilitating seamless trajectory execution and enhancing movement efficiency and accuracy. This paper focuses on the development of path planning algorithms for a robotic arm with six degrees of freedom. Specifically, three alternative approaches are explored: polynomial (cubic and quantic), Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA), and Genetic Algorithm (GA). The comparison of outcomes between different methods revealed that polynomial methods were found to be more straightforward to implement, albeit constrained by the intricacy of the pathway. Upon examining the functioning of the WOA, it has been …
Environmentally Friendly Wastewater Treatment In Egypt: Opportunities And Challenges, Mohamed Gabr
Environmentally Friendly Wastewater Treatment In Egypt: Opportunities And Challenges, Mohamed Gabr
Journal of Engineering Research
The uncontrolled and untreated discharge of significant amounts of wastewater into water bodies, including lakes, rivers, and streams, as a result of population growth, has resulted in a number of environmental and health problems. At the local and municipal levels, many processes are traditionally used for wastewater treatment. It is essential to comprehend all accessible methods and assess their effectiveness because of the growing demand for and development of newer technology. Reusing various agricultural, municipal, and industrial wastes is a workable solution to Egypt's water needs due to the country's limited water supply and gradually rising water demand. The Egyptian …

Parents’ Emotional And Psychological Perspective Of Caring Children With Oncological Disorders: A Descriptive Qualitative Study, Ambreen Navroz Ali Salyani
MSCN 2023
Background: Childhood cancer has a profound effect on the emotional and psychological well-being of parents, yet often their own psychological health is overlooked as the primary focus while treating the child. These parents silently suffer from psychological distress while caring for their children. They use their own coping strategies to overcome the situation. However, limited studies have been carried out in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) regarding parents’ emotional and psychological perspectives of caring their children with oncological disorder.
Purpose: The objective of this study was to explore the psychological perspectives that parents of children with cancer diagnosis, treatment, social …
The Permanence Of Racism In Tennessee Public Schools, Jarral Yokley
The Permanence Of Racism In Tennessee Public Schools, Jarral Yokley
Dissertations
The qualitative case study exposed the permanence of racism beginning in the antebellum public schools of Nashville and continued in the current actions in the Tennessee legislature with the expulsion of two Black male legislators. Critical race theory is used as the main descriptor for the actions of White politicians and legislators in Tennessee who continue the oppressive treatment of Black people in the state of Tennessee.
White members of the Tennessee legislature have attempted to strategically continue white supremacy in their decision to display a depiction of one of the most deplorable, racists in the history of the state …

Conceptual Meaning In Phonology: Multimodal Iconic Expressions In Discourse Focus, David Páez Acevedo
Linguistics ETDs
In everyday communication, speakers go beyond words to synchronize speech sounds and gestures, adding nuanced meanings. For instance, in Colombian Spanish, recounting the distant past involves elongating words, modulating pitch, and using expressive hand movements. This dissertation explores this phenomenon, termed Multimodal Iconic Expressions (MMIEs), using Cognitive Linguistics and Cognitive Grammar. The quantitative study uncovers correlations between verb aspect, nominal quantification, and speech duration, revealing phono-iconic connections. The qualitative study examines construal operations giving rise to MMIEs across semantic domains. MMIEs predominantly appear in discourse Focus, with durative events and mass-like quantities exhibiting pronounced phono-iconic associations. Patterns include stress and …
Evolutionary Conservation And Times Of Action Of Heterochronic Genes, Maria Ivanova
Evolutionary Conservation And Times Of Action Of Heterochronic Genes, Maria Ivanova
Theses and Dissertations
The heterochronic pathway of C. elegans is the most well-characterized system to date for controlling the sequence and timing of developmental events. However, we still have critical unanswered questions to address. First, little is known about the evolution of the heterochronic pathway, and of developmental timing in general. To determine if the roles of major heterochronic genes are conserved, I made mutants in orthologs of these genes in C. briggsae, using CRISPR/Cas9. My studies revealed a significant drift in the roles of some of the genes, although all of them are still involved in the developmental timing regulation, and several …
