Gravel Conveyance System: An Evaluation On E. Coli Removal Capabilities, Madison Grace Dec 2023

Gravel Conveyance System: An Evaluation On E. Coli Removal Capabilities, Madison Grace

Graduate Theses and Dissertations (2019 - present)

In many rural, low-income communities such as the Black Belt of Alabama, there is a lack of wastewater infrastructure and solutions leaving homeowners non-compliant to state and federal law and with potential health risks on their property. New regulations have allowed for onsite, surface discharge for single family homes that are not connected to a centralized sewer or large flow development. These new regulations also contain strict disinfection criteria for the treated wastewater that will be discharged. A low-cost and low-maintenance treatment system that provides adequate disinfection is necessary to allow homeowners to take advantage of the new opportunity for …

Vozick Hans, Alexandra, Sophia Maier Garcia Dec 2023

Vozick Hans, Alexandra, Sophia Maier Garcia

Bronx Jewish History Project

Alexandra Vozick Hans was born to Canadian parents, who, upon moving to New York, lived in the Amalgamated Housing Cooperative, where she grew up. She remained in the Bronx until she graduated college in 1966. After college, she moved to Boston and became a social worker.

Hans and her family were socialists, and Hans recalls tensions between the socialists and the communists in the Amalgamated. She also recalls tensions over the issue of integration in the building: the Amalgamated was not integrated, and residents complained about the lack of integration. Overall, however, Hans looks back with great fondness on the …

Degronmd: Leveraging Evolutionary And Structural Features For Deciphering Protein-Targeted Degradation, Mutations, And Drug Response To Degrons, Haodong Xu, Ruifeng Hu, Zhongming Zhao

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Protein-targeted degradation is an emerging and promising therapeutic approach. The specificity of degradation and the maintenance of cellular homeostasis are determined by the interactions between E3 ubiquitin ligase and degradation signals, known as degrons. The human genome encodes over 600 E3 ligases; however, only a small number of targeted degron instances have been identified so far. In this study, we introduced DegronMD, an open knowledgebase designed for the investigation of degrons, their associated dysfunctional events, and drug responses. We revealed that degrons are evolutionarily conserved and tend to occur near the sites of protein translational modifications, particularly in the regions …

A New Method To Evaluate Pressure Distribution Using A 3d-Printed C2-C3 Cervical Spine Model With An Embedded Sensor Array, Frank Vrionis

All Publications

Cervical degenerative disc diseases such as myelopathy and radiculopathy often require conventional treatments like artificial cervical disc replacement or anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF). When designing a medical device, like the stand-alone cage, there are many design inputs to consider. However, the precise biomechanics of the force between the vertebrae and implanted devices under certain conditions require further investigation. In this study, a new method was developed to evaluate the pressure between the vertebrae and implanted devices by embedding a sensor array into a 3D-printed C2-C3 cervical spine. The 3D-printed cervical spine model was subjected to a range of …

Alignment Between 24-H Light-Dark And Activity-Rest Rhythms Is Associated With Diabetes And Glucose Metabolism In A Nationally Representative Sample Of American Adults, Qian Xiao, John Durbin, Cici Bauer, Chris Ho Ching Yeung, Mariana G Figueiro

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

OBJECTIVE: The alignment between environmental stimuli (e.g., dark, light) and behavior cycles (e.g., rest, activity) is an essential feature of the circadian timing system, a key contributor to metabolic health. However, no previous studies have investigated light-activity alignment in relation to glycemic control in human populations.

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: The analysis included ∼7,000 adults (aged 20-80 years) from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) (2011-2014) with actigraphy-measured, multiday, 24-h activity and light data. We used phasor analysis to derive phasor magnitude and phasor angle, which measures coupling strength and phase difference between the activity-rest and light-dark cycles, …

Effect Of Plant Genotype On Plant-Microbe Interactions And Multi-Generation Ecosystem Selection Of Microbial Communities Associated With Plant Biomass In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Nachiket Shankar

Graduate Doctoral Dissertations

The microbiome's role in shaping host phenotypes is a critical area of investigation, with implications for ecology, evolution, and host health. Dynamic plant-microbe interactions are influenced by factors like soil type, environment, and genotype. Understanding their impact on microbial communities is key for tailored plant benefits. An artificial ecosystem selection experiment was done for eight generations with Arabidopsis thaliana Ler and Cvi. This revealed distinct microbial communities shaped by genotypes and biomass treatments. Initially, environment dominated, but over time, genotype and biomass gained influence, explaining ~40% of the variation. Moreover, genotype-specific rhizobacterial associations were observed, enhancing understanding of community dynamics …

Single-celled microbial eukaryotes inhabit deep-sea hydrothermal vent environments and play critical ecological roles in the vent-associated microbial food web. 18S rRNA amplicon sequencing of diffuse venting fluids from four geographically- and geochemically-distinct hydrothermal vent fields was applied to investigate community diversity patterns among protistan assemblages. The four vent fields include Axial Seamount at the Juan de Fuca Ridge, Sea Cliff and Apollo at the Gorda Ridge, all in the NE Pacific Ocean, and Piccard and Von Damm at the Mid-Cayman Rise in the Caribbean Sea. We describe species diversity patterns with respect to hydrothermal vent field and sample type, identify …

We used diffuse reflectance spectroscopy to quantify tissue absorption and scattering-based parameters in similarly sized tumors derived from a panel of four isogenic murine breast cancer cell lines (4T1, 4T07, 168FARN, 67NR) that are each capable of accomplishing different steps of the invasion-metastasis cascade. We found lower tissue scattering, increased hemoglobin concentration, and lower vascular oxygenation in indolent 67NR tumors incapable of metastasis compared with aggressive 4T1 tumors capable of metastasis. Supervised learning statistical approaches were able to accurately differentiate between tumor groups and classify tumors according to their ability to accomplish each step of the invasion-metastasis cascade. We investigated …

Material And Physical Reservoir Computing For Beyond Cmos Electronics: Quo Vadis?, Christof Teuscher

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Traditional computing is based on an engineering approach that imposes logical states and a computational model upon a physical substrate. Physical or material computing, on the other hand, harnesses and exploits the inherent, naturally-occurring properties of a physical substrate to perform a computation. To do so, reservoir computing is often used as a computing paradigm. In this review and position paper, we take stock of where the field currently stands, delineate opportunities and challenges for future research, and outline steps on how to get material reservoir to the next level. The findings are relevant for beyond CMOS and beyond von …

Design Of An Fgf-1-Fgf-2 Heterodimer Variant With Enhanced Stability And Cell Proliferation Activity, Nicholas Alan Pohlman Dec 2023

Design Of An Fgf-1-Fgf-2 Heterodimer Variant With Enhanced Stability And Cell Proliferation Activity, Nicholas Alan Pohlman

Chemistry & Biochemistry Undergraduate Honors Theses

The FGF-1 subfamily, composed of FGF-1 and FGF-2, assists in broad health-related processes such as cell proliferation and angiogenesis respectively.1,2 The subfamily shows promising signs as a therapeutic, however, the inherent thermal instability leads to a low half-life in vivo.3 To assist in improving the stability, FGF-1 and FGF-2 were connected via a 12-residue glycine linker ultimately producing a heterodimer. This heterodimer was further examined to discover its novel properties. Inspiration for this project was drawn from previous research which performed five mutations on FGF-1 ultimately improving stability in the protein complex. In addition to these five …

Sex Differences In Fatigability And Recovery Following A 5 Km Running Time Trial In Recreationally Active Adults, Maria Solleiro Pons, Sandra K. Hunter, Paul Ansdell

Exercise Science Faculty Research and Publications

Females demonstrate greater fatigue resistance compared to males in tasks ranging from single-limb contractions to whole-body exercise, including running. Many of the studies investigating sex differences in fatigability following running, however, occur after long duration, low-intensity tasks and it is unknown whether there is a sex difference in fatigability following high-intensity running. This study compared fatigability and recovery following a 5 km running time trial in young males and females. Sixteen recreationally active participants (8 males, 8 females, age: 23 ± 4 years) completed a familiarisation and experimental trial. Knee-extensor maximal voluntary contractions (MVCs) were performed before and up to …

Through The Lens Of A Naturalist: How Learning About Nature Promotes Nature Connectedness Via Awe, Shu Tian Ng, Angela K. Y. Leung, Sarah Hian May Chan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Environmental educators stress the importance of engaging with the wonders of the Earth in promoting nature connectedness. However, it remains unclear if learning about nature has an incremental effect beyond mere exposure to nature and what psychological mechanism can explain such a learning effect if it exists. To fill this gap, we propose a mediation model in which learning about nature promotes a sense of awe—a self-transcendent emotion associated with the recognition of vastness in nature. A sense of awe, in turn, promotes nature connectedness. Study 1 employed a cross-sectional survey and offered preliminary support for the proposed model, with …

When Social Status Gets In The Way Of Mating: The Incompatibility Between Social Status And Reproductive Goals In Modern Contexts, Jose C. Yong, Amy J. Y. Lim, Norman P. Li Dec 2023

When Social Status Gets In The Way Of Mating: The Incompatibility Between Social Status And Reproductive Goals In Modern Contexts, Jose C. Yong, Amy J. Y. Lim, Norman P. Li

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Low fertility is a growing concern in modern societies. While economic and structural explanations of reproductive hindrances have been informative to some extent, they do not address the fundamental motives that underlie reproductive decisions and are inadequate to explain why East Asian countries, in particular, have such low fertility rates. The current paper advances a novel account of low fertility in modern contexts by describing how modern environments produce a mismatch between our evolved mechanisms and the inputs they were designed to process, leading to preoccupations with social status that get in the way of mating and reproductive outcomes. We …

Comprehensive, Evidence-Based, Consensus Guidelines For Prescription Of Opioids For Chronic Non-Cancer Pain From The American Society Of Interventional Pain Physicians (Asipp), Radomir Kosanovic Dec 2023

Comprehensive, Evidence-Based, Consensus Guidelines For Prescription Of Opioids For Chronic Non-Cancer Pain From The American Society Of Interventional Pain Physicians (Asipp), Radomir Kosanovic

All Publications

Background: Opioid prescribing in the United States is decreasing, however, the opioid epidemic is continuing at an uncontrollable rate. Available data show a significant number of opioid deaths, primarily associated with illicit fentanyl use. It is interesting to also note that the data show no clear correlation between opioid prescribing (either number of prescriptions or morphine milligram equivalent [MME] per capita), opioid hospitalizations, and deaths. Furthermore, the data suggest that the 2016 guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have resulted in notable problems including increased hospitalizations and mental health disorders due to the lack of appropriate …

Migration is driven by a combination of environmental and genetic factors, but many questions remain about those drivers. Potential interactions between genetic and environmental variants associated with different migratory phenotypes are rarely the focus of study. We pair low coverage whole genome resequencing with a de novo genome assembly to examine population structure, inbreeding, and the environmental factors associated with genetic differentiation between migratory and resident breeding phenotypes in a species of conservation concern, the western burrowing owl (Athene cunicularia hypugaea). Our analyses reveal a dichotomy in gene flow depending on whether the population is resident or migratory, with the …

Empirical Measurements Of Ammonium Excretion In Kelp Forest Fishes: Effects Of Body Size, Taxonomy And Trophic Guild, June Shrestha, Kenneth H. Coale, Scott L. Hamilton

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Fishes and other consumers excrete metabolic waste products, including dissolved nutrients rich in nitrogen, which is an essential nutrient for primary production. Relatively little is known about the magnitude and variability of nutrients excreted by fishes in kelp forest ecosystems and whether consumer-derived nutrients are important for supporting kelp productivity. In this study, the supply of ammonium (NH4+) excreted by the dominant fishes (30 species representing ∼85% of total fish biomass) was investigated on nearshore rocky reefs in California. Using rapid field incubations, the amount of excreted dissolved ammonium was measured as a function of body size (n = 460 …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Critical advances in radionuclide therapy have led to encouraging new options for cancer treatment through the pairing of clinically useful radiation-emitting radionuclides and innovative pharmaceutical discovery. Of the various subatomic particles used in therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals, alpha (α) particles show great promise owing to their relatively large size, delivered energy, finite pathlength, and resulting ionization density. This review discusses the therapeutic benefits of α-emitting radiopharmaceuticals and their pairing with appropriate diagnostics, resulting in innovative "theranostic" platforms. Herein, the current landscape of α particle-emitting radionuclides is described with an emphasis on their use in theranostic development for cancer treatment. Commonly studied radionuclides …

Structural Health Monitoring: The Use Of Acoustic Emission To Optimize The Fdm Additive Manufacturing Process, Ethan Phillips Dec 2023

Structural Health Monitoring: The Use Of Acoustic Emission To Optimize The Fdm Additive Manufacturing Process, Ethan Phillips

All Theses

Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) has gained widespread popularity as an affordable, versatile, and user-friendly additive manufacturing technique. However, ensuring consistent and high-quality prints remains a significant challenge. This study investigated the potential use of Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) in the form of Acoustic Emission (AE) to optimize the FDM 3D printing process, including filament defects and the selection of print parameters. AE monitoring involves the detection and analysis of acoustic waves generated during the printing post-process, providing valuable insights into the dynamic behavior of a specimen with respect to the selected print parameters and integrity of the system. Specific acoustic patterns …

Polluting The Senses: The Impact Of Noise And Light Pollution On Fledgling Movement And Evolution Within The Avian Eye, Margaret C. Mackinlay Dec 2023

Polluting The Senses: The Impact Of Noise And Light Pollution On Fledgling Movement And Evolution Within The Avian Eye, Margaret C. Mackinlay

Master's Theses

There is more human-generated noise and light today than ever before, a trend tied to ongoing urbanization and with reverberating impacts on a wide range of organisms. While research on these impacts is mounting and particularly plentiful when it comes to birds, there is still much to explore within its effects on avian behavior, fitness, and evolution. In chapter 1, we investigated how fledgling movement is influenced by noise and light pollution. While adult birds have well-documented species-specific responses to these stimuli, fledglings are sorely understudied in this context. We experimentally manipulated light levels and took advantage of an existing …

Lichens are an underrepresented group of organisms when it comes to both research and conservation efforts. At the same time, lichens face increasing threats from anthropogenic sources including wildfires, climate change and urbanization. With this thesis, I seek to ascertain and publish ecological data on a critically endangered lichen to inform future conservation designations and efforts to preserve and protect the species in perpetuity.

In Chapter 1, I provide an ecological overview of the known range of Sulcaria isidiifera and assess the status of Sulcaria isidiifera via a population count. Sulcaria isidiifera occurs in maritime chaparral habitat in the Los …

Foundations Of Memory Capacity In Models Of Neural Cognition, Chandradeep Chowdhury Dec 2023

Foundations Of Memory Capacity In Models Of Neural Cognition, Chandradeep Chowdhury

Master's Theses

A central problem in neuroscience is to understand how memories are formed as a result of the activities of neurons. Valiant’s neuroidal model attempted to address this question by modeling the brain as a random graph and memories as subgraphs within that graph. However the question of memory capacity within that model has not been explored: how many memories can the brain hold? Valiant introduced the concept of interference between memories as the defining factor for capacity; excessive interference signals the model has reached capacity. Since then, exploration of capacity has been limited, but recent investigations have delved into the …

The Tidal Prism, Viable Eelgrass Habitat, And The Effects Of Sea Level Rise In Morro Bay, Kaden A. Caliendo Dec 2023

The Tidal Prism, Viable Eelgrass Habitat, And The Effects Of Sea Level Rise In Morro Bay, Kaden A. Caliendo

Master's Theses

The tidal prism, or the volume of water exchanged from the sea to an estuary from mean low to mean high tide, influences system hydrodynamics and ecological functioning. Since 1884, the tidal prism in Morro Bay, California has been estimated to be decreasing over time due to sedimentation from upstream practices. What is the current tidal prism in Morro Bay and how will that change with sea level rise? How will eelgrass respond to rising sea levels?

For this study, inexpensive tidal gauges were deployed at four locations in Morro Bay from March to August 2023 to measure spatially varying …

“Yo Sí Soy Boricua, Pa’ Que Tú Lo Sepas”: A Decolonial And Intersectional Analysis Of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Jocelin Monge

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Historically speaking, political representation in Congressional districts in the U.S. has been predominantly White and male. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) is an example of a type of new mestizaconsciousness (Anzaldúa, 1987) given she is the youngest Latina congresswoman ever been elected to serve New York’s 14th Congressional District. This study employs an intersectional analysis on AOC’s viral moments with ‘The Squad’, Puerto Rico, Vogue, and Met Gala. Through a theoretical lens composed of elements of intersectionality (Crenshaw, 1991) and mestiza consciousness (Anzaldúa, 1987), this study focuses on three significant recurrent themes found in AOC’s estilos de resistencia or sensibilities …
