Interventions For The Mind, Body, And Spirit Of Ncaa Student-Athletes: An Evidence To Practice Review, Molly M. Osborn, Victoria A. Williams, Allison B. Smith, Zachary K. Winkelmann

Clinical Practice in Athletic Training

Life as an athlete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) can enrich and play an integral part in a young student-athlete's development. Consequently, this lifestyle comes with its own stressors that affect one’s physical, spiritual, and psychosocial well-being. These issues can affect various aspects of a student-athlete’s life, including their performance in sports, school, and social settings. Recent studies have begun connecting these domains directly to the health and well-being of NCAA student-athletes, leading to new evidence focused on the best intervention protocols for the biopsychosocial-spiritual (BPSS) model of health. A systematic review was conducted using five electronic databases. …

Editorial: Microglia In Neuroinflammation, Pinar Ayata, Ido Amit, Carla M. Cuda

Advanced Science Research Center

Microglia are a resident innate immune cell population of the central nervous system (CNS) derived from yolk sac erythro-myeloid progenitors that migrate to the developing brain prior to the formation of the blood-brain barrier. This critical cell population has gained considerable traction in the literature as it is considered a protective barrier from CNS damage and, yet, can also serve as a primary mediator of neuroinflammation. Under normal physiological conditions, microglia perform homeostatic functions, such as parenchymal surveillance, neurotrophic support, pathogen or debris removal, and maintenance of synaptic homeostasis and neuronal plasticity.

Much of our current understanding of how small-molecule ligands interact with proteins stems from X-ray crystal structures determined at cryogenic (cryo) temperature. For proteins alone, room-temperature (RT) crystallography can reveal previously hidden, biologically relevant alternate conformations. However, less is understood about how RT crystallography may impact the conformational landscapes of protein-ligand complexes. Previously, we showed that small-molecule fragments cluster in putative allosteric sites using a cryo crystallographic screen of the therapeutic target PTP1B (Keedy et al., 2018). Here, we have performed two RT crystallographic screens of PTP1B using many of the same fragments, representing the largest RT crystallographic screens of …

The Bulgarian And Greek Versions Of The Cognitive Test Anxiety Scale In University Students: In Search Of A Factor Structure, Stanislava Stoyanova, Vaitsa Giannouli

Archives of Assessment Psychology

University students face test anxiety regardless of their country of origin. Therefore, it is necessary to use psychometric measures with identified factor structures. The Cognitive Test Anxiety Scale (CTAS) has been used in different countries to measure the cognitive aspect of test anxiety. Although the CTAS has been used widely, its factor structure is a topic of debate. In this study, we focused on concurrent data collection in two adjacent countries (Bulgaria and Greece), with two aims: a) to establish for the first time the factor structure for the Bulgarian and Greek versions of the CTAS, and b) to investigate …

Herbicides have been widely used to manage woody vegetation, but quantification of their effects is often lacking. We documented the impacts of a commonly used clopyralid + aminopyralid + triclopyr herbicide blend on Prosopis velutina Woot. in grazed Sonoran Desert grasslands in southern Arizona. Similar to other applications of comparable herbicide blends in the region, we recorded only modest and short-term impacts. P. velutina mortality was 7%. Foliar cover declined to 9.2% ± 0.80% the month following treatment and was comparable across size classes. Cover reductions persisted for ∼2 yr, by which time it was comparable on treated and control …

Detecting Trends In Abundance And Distribution Of Seagrasses In Lake Worth Lagoon, Palm Beach County, Florida, James R. Kerfoot Jr., Samantha N. Jones, Michael H. Schiebout, Beth Orlando

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Over the past 15 years, seagrass community stability has varied in estuaries throughout Florida. This study sought to model potential patterns of physiochemical parameters and community composition that may correlate with the fluctuation of seagrass populations in Lake Worth Lagoon (LWL), Palm Beach County, FL over time (2007–2019). Seven transects and 4 polygon areas throughout the LWL were established and stratified along a north—south gradient. Sites were sampled annually (May–August) for water quality, seagrass and macroalgal abundance, and community composition. Models developed to explain macrophyte abundance and composition were assessed using Akaike Information Criterion. Interaction between year and site best …

Reflections On A Career Unplanned, Robert A. Glazer

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Sometimes life takes unexpected turns. I never planned to be a marine biologist; yet, after a long and unpredictable journey, that’s exactly where I found myself. After obtaining my B.S. in Fishery Biology from Colorado State University, I found myself meandering from job to job like a golden retriever following some vague scent. At first, I was hired by the Wyoming Game and Fish Department to work seasonally in Grand Teton National Park on the freshwater trout fisheries. Soon thereafter, I found myself cultivating oysters, clams, and other shellfish in California. The skills I developed there as an algologist led …

Investigating The Electrostatics Of Mucins As Key Contributors To Mucus Stasis In Cystic Fibrosis, Elex Skylar Rose Jan 2023

Investigating The Electrostatics Of Mucins As Key Contributors To Mucus Stasis In Cystic Fibrosis, Elex Skylar Rose

All ETDs from UAB

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disease caused by mutations in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene, which encodes a channel responsible for the transport of chloride and bicarbonate ions across the apical cell surface. In the respiratory tract, defective CFTR results in viscous and adherent mucus that becomes static within the airway, which leads to chronic infections, progressive lung damage, and early mortality. Historically, CF mucus stasis has been attributed to significant airway dehydration; however, growing evidence has demonstrated that aberrant electrostatic properties of mucins also contribute to mucus stasis in CF. Mucins are large, polymeric glycoproteins …

Assessment Of The Environmental Impact Of Food Consumption In Ireland-Informing A Transition To Sustainable Diets, Laura B Kirwan, Janette Walton, Albert Flynn, Anne P. Nugent, John Kearney, Nicholas M. Holden, Breige A. Mcnulty

Articles

Dietary changes are required to mitigate the climatic impact of food consumption. Food consumption databases can support the development of sustainable food based dietary guidelines (SFBDG) when linked to environmental indicators. An improved knowledge base is crucial to the transition to sustainable diets, and multiple environmental indicators should be considered to ensure this transition is evidence based and accounts for trade-offs. The current study aimed to quantify the environmental impact of daily diets across population groups in Ireland. Nationally representative food consumption surveys for Irish children (NCFSII; 2017-2018), teenagers (NTFSII; 2019-2020), and adults (NANS; 2008-2010) were used in this analysis. …

Trichomonas vaginalis is responsible for 156 million new cases per year worldwide. When present asymptomatically, the parasite can lead to serious complications, such as development of cervical and prostate cancer. As infection increases the acquisition and transmission of HIV, the control of trichomoniasis represents an important niche for the discovery and development of new antiparasitic molecules. This urogenital parasite synthesizes several molecules that allow the establishment and pathogenesis of infection. Among them, peptidases occupy key roles as virulence factors, and the inhibition of these enzymes has become an important mechanism for modulating pathogenesis. Based on these premises, our group recently …

Leishmaniasis, caused by protozoa of the genus Leishmania, encompasses a group of neglected diseases with diverse clinical and epidemiological manifestations that can be fatal if not adequately and promptly managed/treated. The current chemotherapy options for this disease are expensive, require invasive administration and often lead to severe side effects. In this regard, our research group has previously reported the potent anti-Leishmania activity of two coordination compounds (complexes) derived from 1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-dione (phendione): [Cu(phendione)3 ].(ClO4 )2 .4H2O and [Ag(phendione)2 ].ClO4 . The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of these complexes on leishmanolysin (gp63), a virulence factor produced by all Leishmania …

Novel Results On Trapezoid-Type Inequalities For Conformable Fractional Integrals, Fati̇h Hezenci̇, Hüseyi̇n Budak

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

This paper establishes an identity for the case of differentiable $s-$convex functions with respect to the conformable fractional integrals. By using this identity, sundry trapezoid-type inequalities are proven by $s-$convex functions with the help of the conformable fractional integrals. Several important inequalities are acquired with taking advantage of the convexity, the Hölder inequality, and the power mean inequality. Moreover, an example using graph is given in order to show that our main results are correct. By using the special choices of the obtained results, we present several new results connected with trapezoid-type inequalities.

Figure-8-Reconstruction Of Posterior Sternoclavicular Joint Dislocation 18 Days Post Initial Injury, M Suri, S Bunemann

Clinical Practice in Athletic Training

Introduction: Traumatic sternoclavicular joint injuries account for less than 3% of all traumatic joint injuries1. Although rare, posterior dislocation of the sternoclavicular joint has the potential to be life-threatening due to the proximity of vital structures posterior to the manubrium. This injury typically requires a high-energy force applied through the joint2. SC dislocations become increasingly difficult to reduce after 24 hours, so timely diagnosis and treatment are important. Glass et al. found mediastinal compression occurred 30% of the time with posterior dislocations. If left untreated, prolonged pressure on the superior mediastinum can cause erosion of the great vessels, tracheoesophageal fistula, …
